He’s known for his body and beauty. But in a rare interview Brad Pitt reveals his serious side to our critic Marianne Gray

Brad Pitt has reached a turning point. To the public he is one of Hollywood’s hottest actors. Together with wife Angelina Jolie he forms one of the most famous partnerships in the world. They are even a word in their own right: “Brangelina”. However, Pitt no longer wants to be seen as just eye candy. Can he makes us see him any differently?

We meet, waiting for a lift in a hotel in Deauville, France. Our rooms are next door to one another. Jolie is at Pitt’s side, sleek in black. She has just put the children to bed. He inquires affectionately if they are asleep. She replies that they are. The couple seem relaxed and happy.

Jesse James is Pitt’s 30th film, and he has come a long way from

warrior Achilles in a skirt in the swords-and-sandals epic-drama Troy, Fight Club, Seven, Snatch and the lively Mr & Mrs Smith with Jolie. They met on the set of the film, in which they played married assassins, in 2003. He was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance in Legends of the Fall and won one for Twelve Monkeys (for which he was also Oscar nominated).

Now, at 43, he has his own family, a daughter with Jolie, and is father to her three adopted children. “I think I’m about at the halfway mark now I am over 40,” he says. “I guess the direction gets clearer and the haze clears and you really focus on what you want to focus on as you get older.”

That would include carving a reputation as a respected producer, as with A Mighty Heart, starring Jolie as Mariane Pearl, the widow of the Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, who was beheaded by jihadist militants while reporting in Karachi in 2002. James Christopher, The Times’s chief film critic, raved that Jolie’s performance as Mariane had “rigour and passion”.

“I was very taken with Mariane’s story, and Angelina knew her independently from me,” Pitt says. “It was important for me to be a part of the film, even though there was no acting role for me. Through the producing I got to take part in the film and see it through to the end. That’s the producer’s job: make sure things stay on the rails. It’s a really interesting side to film-making - we don’t have to be in front of the camera.”

He adds that he is working on several projects and “plans to tell some great stories” with Brad Grey, his partner in the film company Plan B. While he produces, Jolie is starring in a high-action thriller coincidentally called The Assassin, jumping off and on trains and training young assassins. “We have two boys at home who are very happy about it,” he says.

Away from film, the Jolie/Pitt Foundation recently raised $1 million for relief in Darfur, and Pitt is now regularly pictured in magazines with his kids, playing and shopping. “I can’t recommend family life enough,” he says. “Astonishingly, I have become more efficient now that I have less time. Family comes first and so I have to work more quickly but somehow, even with sleep being nonexistent, paradoxically I get more work done.” At the Venice Film Festival Pitt said that he and Jolie wanted to have another child as soon as possible.

So, what does his own family think of it all now, I wonder.

He laughs. “One day I called my grandfather and asked how he was doing. He said: ‘We just saw your movie.’ I said: ‘Which one?’ And he called to my grandmother: ‘Betty, what was the name of that picture we were just watching?’ ” A celebrity enigma to us, but to his grandparents, he’s just their grandson.

Pitt shakes my hand courteously as we part, Jolie says a friendly goodbye, and together they head towards the flashbulbs.

Yes, this is a cut and paste article. The writer even totally made up her meeting with B&A in the elevator. How could she in the room next to B&A, when she is just a lowly writer. How stupid can a 5 star hotel that they would put a tabloid or even newspaper writer beside or near the room of B&A. And in most cases, B&A would occupy the presidentail suite or the next bigger suite whevever they travel, and these suites are located in exclusive floors.

The quote on the grandpa and grandma is just so old, and I think Brad;s grandpa had died already, not sure about the grandma.

kay, I thought so too. Too obvious when those things happened.
I also got one thery, remember Angie was a member of CAA same with Brad & the X. When this divorce are still fresh all the media is speculating about Brad & Angelina. Some media are talking but not attacking below the belt. When Angelina break away from CAA we saw non-stop nastiness towards Angelina. Brad not too much since he was still a CAA member.
Sometimes I think people from CAA are the ones putting these rumors about Angelina, because we all see “insiders” being mentioned by the tabloids.

This is highly unlikely and I’m baffled by your logic. First of all, Angie was NOT with CAA when she and Brad got together. She didn’t have an agent and hadn’t had one for years. Angie, at Brad’s prompting, singed with CAA in summer 2005. At that time she was already planning to take a year off to bond with her new daughter. She had Beowulf & TGS yet to film and then she was taking the break. Her plans sort of changed when she got pregnant with Shiloh, but after Shiloh’s birth Angie left CAA BECAUSE SHE HADN’T USED THEIR SERIVES AT ALL AND WASN’T PLANNING TO WORK MUCH IN THE FUTURE. Why waste money on an agent that she doesn’t use? That’s money that she could use for her philanthropic pursuits, so why waste in a suit who’s not doing any work for her?

Obviously we now know that Brad & Mariane Pearl got her the AMH gig, so what did she need CAA for? I really don’t think she was planning to go back to work much this year after she adopted Pax, but as she said in an interview, after Marcheline’s death, everyone thought it would be good for her to work on something light and fun. IIRC the producers of Wanted came to Angie when Halle Berry dropped out of the movie. The role was even rewritten by the guy who scripted LR:TR2 to tailor the role to Angie’s liking. This was almost a year after Angie had already dropped CAA.

Angie dropped CAA in June 2006 just after they came back from Africa. So why would CAA be mad at a client that they’d NEVER done any work for? Secondly, why would CAA risk ticking off Brad, one of their 2 biggest clients, who had been with them for donkey years? I know there are people who don’t think Brad says enough in interviews to defend Angie, but we all know Brad ain’t that shy about voicing his dislike and ire behind closed doors. If CAA were at all involved with the ridiculous tabloid attacks on Angie, Brad wouldn’t take that kindly or quietly.

And last, what would CAA have to gain from maligning a former client that everyone in the industry knows they never did any work for and who’s BF is one of their star clients? If CAA where orchestrating a tabloid lynching of Angie word would get out and potential clients would go elsewhere. These people are all about money and power - two things they can’t have if they engage in vendettas against former clients who fired them. Once word got around the industry of their actions, who’s going to want an agent that they they can’t trust?

JMHO…but I think your theory has holes big enough to make the Grand Canyon look like just a little hole in the ground.

The CAA theory is stupid. Brad is the one who told angelina to join and BRAD IS STILL ONE OF HIS BIGGEST CLIENTS. That’s insane and stupid.

If CAA wanted revenge they will be attacking her projects not using tabbies.

You have any idea how many directors, actors, writers are clients with CAA? A LOT even the Yankees are their clients!

When CAA wants to teach you a lesson they do anything for you to not get a job. Angelina IS WORKING and has been working after she drop CAA, no drama there.

it is another katrina benefit in NYC,the day after CGI.and no body was aware of it,because people magazine buy photo exclusively.

I personally think that some want to make this way to complicated. It’s just all about money. Since the X had been already labeled as the “American sweetheart” Brad as the “Golden boy” and Angie as the “Bad wild girl” the tabs took all those labels combined them together and create the infamous non-existent triangle. The “Bad wild girl” stole the “Golden boy” from the “America’s sweetheart”. And BOOM!!

All the insecure and poorly educated women bought to that story projecting and blaming the misery of their lives on a celebrity divorce. They became avid tabloid readers(If they weren’t already). The tabloid’s sells increased big time so they keep writing the same old sh*t over and over. Just remember how much worse it was back in late 2005 and almost all 2006. And since this mantra is still selling copies they will keep it alive as much as they can.

Although people are slowly but surely getting tired of their bullsh*ts.

Believe me if the “triangle” didn’t sell the tabs and the whole media industry would have dropped that subject like a hot potato a long time ago.

And someday that this story won’t sell anymore than it will be completely over no matter who wants to protect who and no matter of any behind influences.

Money can buy everything. Either in a good or in a bad way. It depends of how you want to use them.

people you think they will leave NYC in this week or even today?because brad`s movie shooting according to some of you is finished so probably they will leave it to L.A.since doesn`t seem Angie went and say good bye or thank to school`s people,teachrs,maybe they will stay another week in NYC too!!!
