My take:

When Ben Affleck won the Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival, there was a flurry of ads for Hollywoodland. I know because I wasn’t even interested, and I remember seeing TV ads and the big push because Affleck won. For TAOJJ, there were no TV ads even after Brad won (there were newspaper ads with mention of the win, but that’s it). PT was right, I saw Babel commercials everywhere when it opened around this time last year. Now, for TAOJJ, zippo, zilch, nada. You would think that because Brad won he at least would get a boost from Warner. He must have really really ticked off a lot of people for them to treat his movie like it was chopped liver.

++++++++++++++++

Briseis - you’re in the Chicago area, right? AOJJ is playing in 3 or 4 theaters in that area and you’re still not seeing TV ads for it? See, that says A LOT about how Warners is probably deliberately tanking this movie.

A while back someone posted a comment from Ted C here where Ted was saying that BRAD wasn’t going to be pushing for this movie and would sabotage it. Methinks someone fed Ted the WRONG person’s name as the tanker of the flick. It’s pretty clear that Warner’s is NOT behind this movie and his doing a one quarter-assed job of promoting it.

Question: Can Plan B by advertising time or space for AAOJJ? I know they wouldn’t be able to do it on the scale that the studio could they?

Hi all.

You know what movie has similarities with A Mighty Heart? Rendition with Reese Witherspoon & Jake Gyllenhaal. A synopsis for those who are not clued in:

I want to see how the public recieves this movie becasue I’ve been seeing trailers for it yest the trailers say nothing about what the film is about.

Why is it wrong to talk about this? Yes, I understand that tabs lurk on threads, but we are not dissing the movie; many of us want to see it and are going to see it; we are dissing TPTB who seem to be dropping the ball, IMO.

If the tabs decide to use our observations as a substitute for that of industry types, with whom that supposedly have regular contact, then they are saying what we all suspected; these tabs don’t have $h*t.

PT:

Yes, it’s in four theatres in Chicagoland, one in downtown area (where O13 had their premiere), and two in the farflung suburbs (for me anyway, since I do not drive), and one in a suburb just next to Chicago. I am a TV-holic (that is my addiction of choice to put me to sleep), and I have not seen ONE IOTA of promo for the movie. So to me it speaks volumes of how Warner just thinks of this movie as a tax write-off and is not interested in promoting it at all. Watch, they will be promoting to death George Clooney’s Michael Clayton, and be pushing it for the Oscars, to the detriment of Brad’s movie and Brad’s bid himself. I just don’t understand why — isn’t the movie studios bottom line is MONEY — it seems like they DON’T WANT to make money off this movie at all!

I saw this on opening night here in Dallas last weekend. Theater was packed, but the grumblings afterwards were noticeable. I personally feel its a stunning film, one of my very favs of the year. I love how patient the whole thing is. Just watch the expression on Casey Affleck’s face change in that one long shot as Jesse James joins his family for dinner. Or the unbearable tension built up when Jesse goes to visit the character of Ed Miller. Dominik has hit this one out of the park. I was enthralled from start to finish. It’s a shame the studio isn’t behind this more, but what can you expect after its production problems for so long.>

+++++++++++++++++++++

Now here’s an enlightening comment - maybe Warner’s is pissed that they didn’t get their way with this movie? They didn’t like the 160 minute cut and wanted more action scenes. Brad & Tony Scott really fought for their vision of the movie and Warners finally caved in. Maybe they’ve decided that they may have caved, but it doesn’t mean they have to promote the movie. They could be shooting themselves in the foot because they’re having a 2 year-old’s hissy fit because they didn’t get their way!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

That is interesting. But with all the oscar buzz and good reviews of this movie Warner is an idiot if they don’t take advantage of that. At this point it doesn’t matter who was right and who was wrong about which version of the movie should hit the screen if they can make money and bring home awards they shouldn’t care. Hollywood is a strange place.

It will be interesting as it has not been getting good reviews. The trailers wrecks my nerve. I already hate that scene where Reese appears to be in a police station the door is closing and she is screaming, “Where is my husband”. It comes off like a screech.

Inside Pitt-Jolie’s Reported NYC Pad
Hollywood’s Royalty Bunk at Waldorf Tower With Presidents and Kings

ABC News

By SHEILA MARIKAR and RICHARD ESPOSITO
Oct. 9, 2007

As the old saying goes, in real estate, it’s all about location, location, location.

Throw celebrities or high-profile politicos into the mix and there’s another factor that’s just as important: security, security, security

New York City’s Waldorf Towers, located next to the tony Waldorf Astoria hotel, boasts both those qualities, making it the home of choice for both heads of state and Hollywood royalty. Its newest reported residents: pop culture king and queen Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

The New York Post reported Tuesday that Pitt and Jolie have moved into an apartment in the Towers, citing anonymous sources. According to the Post, the couple also considered a residence in the newly built Time Warner Center but picked the Waldorf because they got a price break on the apartment.

Representatives for the Waldorf Towers declined to comment on the Post’s story, saying in a statement, “We do not comment on our guests in any capacity so as to respect their privacy while staying with us.”

Representatives for Pitt and Jolie did not immediately return phone calls or e-mail messages.

But people familiar with the needs of New York City’s elite agree that the Towers are a natural choice for the A-list couple. It boasts a sought-after zip code, fortress-like security and centuries of prestige — past residents of the Towers include President Herbert Hoover and musician Cole Porter. What more could Brad and Angie want?

Security Fit for Real and Hollywood Royalty
“There is a whole mindset and methodology in place that is geared to elevating the protection of its guests and residents,” said Lou Palumbo, president and director of the Elite Agency, which provides protection for at least one head of state, cabinet level U.S. officials, members of the Chinese government and ABC News operations in New York.

Located just down the street from the United Nations where Jolie serves as goodwill ambassador, the Waldorf plays host to many of the 160 or so heads of state and dignitaries who arrive for the opening of the General Assembly.

“The Waldorf is well versed in the goings on of dignitaries from around the world and their security needs,” said Corcoran broker Dennis Colwell, who deals in luxury Manhattan real estate. “Plus, the Waldorf has a separate private entrance and elevators which allows Brad and Angelina to avoid the main hotel lobby and guests. This enhances the privacy and security of the family while allowing Brad to comfortably wear his jeans.”

Inside the residential tower, in addition to the doormen and plainclothes house detectives who are the front line for hotel security, many of the floors have separate guard booths and security forces provided by the U.N. or, in some cases, the U.S. government.

Hey Lynn!! Yes. Advertising is the right word indeed. Well Babel didn’t even have the half promotion the AOJJ had but it did really well worldwide in the end as you said. So it’s a bit early to say anything.

+++++++++++++++

Gotta disagree TP. Babel was far more heavily promoted than AOJJ currently is. The print ads AND tv commericials were everywhere. You live in Greece, so you’re not able to witness firsthand the amount of promotion that’s going on in the States with this movie. I still haven’t seen a TV add for AOJJ. Some people got the clip off one of the entertainment shows and that’s where I saw it. Other than that, I have yet to be watching TV and see an ad for the movie. I haven’t seen a print ad in any magazines either. I watch a lot of sports, visit sports sites, read sports magazines. This isn’t a shoot ‘em up Western and it is an art film, and typically westerns are markets to men not women, but I’m just not seeing ads for this movie anywhere. I flipped through the most recent GQ with Ben Affleck on the cover…I didn’t see many movie ads in the mag at all, but definitely not one for AOJJ. If anyone else is seeing print and tv ads, please tell me where. I live in freaking Missouri and really thought I’d see more of a push for this movie here and there’s NADA.
——————————————————
I suppose you are right. It’s just that when Babel came out here I saw a trailer just ONCE and then never again. But Greece is a very small market so it’s understandable.

BTW- Your theories about Warner’s “revenge” against Plan B for not renewing the contract and about Brad and A.Dominik having the last say about the version of the movie are really interesting.

If it’s true they are acting really childish for a production company of their league. It’s ridiculous to think that way. And since it’s the last movie Warners is promoting with Plan B they had to make as much money as they could out of it. Not the other way around.

At the end of the day they are harming themselves. Not Brad. Plan B has moved to Paramount and Brad has three movies coming up, one more movie on the works and many new projects at Plan B.

Thank you. First time I heard Bill’s voice. (The bodyguard) He is sooooo British!! LOL!!

Thanks to the person who posted the theater and showtimes info for TAOJJ in Portland, OR area.
The info on this film has been almost nonexistent in here.
It is unfortunate, because, as Julia pointed out, this is a great movie town and we very much go by Friday’s A&E section review and recommendations.
More and more Hollywood movies are being made here just up the road from Cali. For one thing it is cheaper, scenery is so beautiful, and it is also a great movie-goers town. That’s what we do most of the year (because of the weather). We read, and we go to a lot of movies, especially the ones like TAOJJ. So it is really puzzling the way they have or have not decided to promote this film here in the NW.

I read yesterday that Passing Through was going to leave a message on Warner’s website. Any luck in finding out anything? I’ll rather people push for solutions than talk about it all day.

Ok, just saw People Mag cover is Britney again. So where is Ms top cover girl Aniston, she is not even in sidebars of mags this weeK?

Is she in Star Mag or NE?

Anyway, its just proven that the pretentious Forbes mag did not get it right! Britney no matter she is not well-liked sells the mags. She is also on OK’cover. B&A had 2 sidebars in US and L&S.

In touch after of lies after lies about B&A, is taking a break from its shameful covers. They probably know US weekly is exposing their lies again this week!

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
And what are you doing to help?

I’m asking the questions because when people agree on a pattern to help and then we do what we can, I’m trying to push the discussion in that area of what we can do to help rather than talking abouut just the problems. That’s the kind of suggestion I’m looking for.

Peaches, I don’t know, but I wouldn’t think so. They produced the movie in conjunction with several other production companies, but Warners owns distribution and marketing rights.
