It’s weird. They call these things junkets. It’s a word that means either “a sweet dessert”, “a party” or “a trip made for pleasure at someone else’s expense”. And the pleasure trip aspect is certainly there for the journalists, who get flown to somewhere nice by the film company, put up in hotels, see the film and then spend a day or a few hours talking to the people who made it. When I was a journalist, getting on a junket was always considered a good thing - a small amount of work for a fair amount of pleasure and adventure.

Having done a few of them now on the other side of the press conference table I think it’s worth mentioning that they aren’t really junkets for the people organising them or for the people being interviewed. They are work.

We assembled yesterday morning early in a hotel back room. A lady did hair and make up for the cameras (which means, in my case, a bit of powder, and then her looking at my hair and asking “Is it meant to be like that?” and me saying, um, yes, sorry). Then into a back room to be led onto the stage for a press conference. Ray Winstone and Crispin Glover had just seen the film and loved it (Crispin: “And mostly I don’t like films I’m in,”), John Malkovitch, Anthony Hopkins and Angelina Jolie haven’t yet seen it. Bob Zemeckis was there but decided some years ago not to do things like interviews and junkets and press conferences (very wise, and I rather wish I could do likewise).

I like Angelina. She’s nice, very professional, and has a slightly goofy sense of humour. Last time I met her was November 2005, when she was doing the acting bit of Beowulf. Even then, it had already been reported in the papers that she had closed down production on Beowulf by walking off the set after a fight with Ray Winstone - two weeks before her first day on set. I realised that where she was concerned the press were happy to simply make up stuff that sounded credible. It didn’t need have to have any basis at all in reality.

It was obvious during the press conference that a large contingent of the press just wanted to talk to her and talk about her private life, something she declined to do and handled with grace and aplomb. Overall, the press conference went well (I think my favourite bit was the way Ray Winstone, answering questions, always refers to me and Roger Avary as “The Boys”, as if we’re a couple of writing hardcases who will come over to your house and beat you up with our typewriters.)

And then on to interviews. Round tables: a dozen journalists in each room, and Roger and I go in, talk for half an hour and are then moved to the next room, where another dozen journalists are waiting to ask the same questions, while Anthony Hopkins, always one room behind, is moved into the room we were in.

And then it was off to hotel rooms for individual interviews, and telephone interviews with journalists in Kansas and suchlike places. And then, brain dead, we were done.

The reaction to the film from the journalists and interviewers, who had seen it the previous night, seemed overwhelmingly positive, which was a relief.

It’s nice that people have started to see the film, and are now actually talking about the thing they’ve seen. (I got a bit tired of reading online “reviews” of the film, which were always mash-ups of what people thought they’d seen in the trailers with what they imagined we were doing to the story, along with complaints about visuals they hadn’t properly seen yet, which then normally concluded with the loud and proud announcement that as they knew they wouldn’t like it, they wouldn’t be seeing it, and it certainly wouldn’t be Beowulf. Several of them were written by people who should, I thought, know better. I’ve never minded getting bad reviews, but in the past they’ve always come from people who had at least read or seen the thing they were complaining about.)

Anyway, now we’ve started screening it, real reactions are coming in.

Her family just doesn’t consist of Brad. The good thing about the holiday season is that everyone gets to make their favorite dishes, things that you might not ordinarily have. So maybe Brad contributes something, her brother, Brad’s brother, Brad’s sister and I’m sure everyone is asking his mother for their favorite dishes that are usually served doing the holiday season. Maybe they do have a cook but when you look at her answer I don’t see how it is a lie if everyone contributes just like in every other family during the hoiliday season. You are really reaching, you want something to complain about, something to point and say hey look at this and the funny this is Angie would be and has been the first to say she is far from perfect.

If you read your post about Dr. Karenga (Kwanzaa creator), her goal by celebrating Kwanzaa is to preserve and continually revitalize and promote African American culture. Z is an African American!!!

Actually I think it was the editing. It seems like there were just as many questions asked to Hopkins but they just edited it & left out what I think were more questions. It’s something in how Chirs Cuomo seemed to “jump” when asking a question to Angelina, like they cut out a previous question to Hopkins. No biggie. I do like their chemistry though. Someone picked up on the fatherly figure he seemed to project. I agree. But man this film was made like a long time ago! LOL.

The interviewer asked what they did for thanksgiving anybody with common sense would know that thansgiving is atuomatically for Shilo. But the thing is all of what they celebrate is for all of the kids. It gives them a chance to understand each others culture. The way you are picking apart every word of her innterview really says something about you and it isn’t good.

But I remember reading an interview with Angelina Jolie in Hello magazine last year that the Jolie-Pitts celebrate Christmas on Jan. 7 as well like us. I have to say that I was really impressed to hear that. Anyway, what is wrong with celebrating Kwanza? We (Ethiopians) living here in North America have embraced your holidays. We still celebrate our holidays (as our Calendar is different) since we grew up celebrating those holidays. I’m sure when Z gets older, they will take her back to Ethiopia and let her find out about her culture.

Despite Playing Evil Character, Actress Said She Understood Character’s Motivation

During her lengthy career Angelina Jolie has played a thief, a detective, an adventurer and even what she calls a “sexy lizard” in her latest film “Beowulf.”

Though Jolie is followed more now for her high-profile personal life and humanitarian work, it was at the movie theater that Americans first fell in love with the pouty actress.

The oldest known story in the English language comes to the silver screen this month as the epic poem “Beowulf” is brought to life. Using cutting-edge computer animated film, and some of the biggest Hollywood stars, the movie is poised for a groundbreaking run.

The movie, which uses digitally animated backgrounds that are blended with traditional live-action film, follows Beowulf, who comes to save King Hrothgar, played by Anthony Hopkins, because his kingdom has fallen prey to a demon named Grendel.

Actress Angelina Jolie, who plays Grendel’s mother, said even though her character was evil, she was able to associate with her maternal side.

“I liked that it was a mother, who would do anything and destroy anything, if somebody hurt her son. So it was, it was the maternal side of me,” Jolie said. “I love that that’s her motivation.”

Jolie described her character as a “sexy lizard” and said it was challenging trying to make a demon alluring.

“I just focused on her being evil,” she said. “But, on the day [of filming], it didn’t feel very sexy at all. I was in the traditional bubble head and the jump suit. And I felt absolutely goofy, especially trying to feel seductive in my jumpsuit with my dot face.”

Jolie said her family helps her balance her acting and her advocacy work.

And for Jolie’s co-star, Hopkins, doing the semi-animated film offered him more liberties.

“You have a certain degree of freedom,” he said, “because you don’t have any set or props or scenery, or anything like that in a normal film.”

“But you’re surrounded by these grids of cameras, hundreds of cameras,” Hopkins added.

The actors said there are important themes in “Beowulf.”

“In the history of this country, I mean, how power is the driving force that makes somebody grab for the presidency and they get it, and that same power undoes them,” Hopkins said, “there’s a kind of spiritual allegory in that.”

“I think it’s got that old theme of, of selling your soul for something you think is important, like, like power or fame and realizing that, that is just a trap,” Jolie added. “That’s, that’s the great message.”

Turkey Time

The movie, which opens Nov. 16, arrives just in time for Thanksgiving and the actors said they already have their holidays planned.

While Hopkins said he plans to make the gravy, Jolie said she is not so much of cook.

“We’ll see what happens this year,” she said. “We all chip in. But I don’t think anybody in my family wants me to handle Thanksgiving dinner.”

Jolie added that her diverse family adds elements from her adopted children’s cultures into the family’s celebration.

“We celebrate Moon Festival for my boys, who are from Asia,” she said. “We certainly try to celebrate as many of those as we can and bring in all culture.”

Angelina should learn to cook during her time off. I’m not saying this because of some old fashion notiion that all women should know how to cook, I’m saying it because it could be really good for her. It seems that she’s one of those people who sees food as fuel and not as something you sit down and enjoy and savour.

Maybe if she learned to cook a few recipies, she would see cooking as an art and enjoy the food more. Angelina said she has had a hard time getting her nutrition back on track. Usually, the people who know more about cooking know how to incorporate healthy food ingredients into their daily diet.

With all respects to Angie, and she is free to bring up her little darlings how she wants to…but “their culture” is whatever they chose to make it, not necessarily where they were born. As American children they don’t necessarily have to embrace every different country from which a family member originates. American culture is now their culture. This could actually fragment the family and confuse the kids. They are Brad and Angelina’s children now and I hope they focus on Brad and Angelina’s culture as their own primarily and stop being politcally correct. Of course it never hurts to learn a little about their racial origin, but I hope not to the point where it divides this beautiful family.

I thought as an immigrant my daughter would be more interested in my country of origin, but she doesn’t care too much. She is too focused on being a Canadian. Bit I’m sure the JPs will figure it out as a family.

You might have a point there. I have an aunt who was the same way. She worked alot and was too busy to really sit down and enjoy her food. It would always be come in from work, eat something in a hurry, sleep, go back to work or go somewhere with the family. When she was pregnant with my little cousin though, she was forced to relax especially in the later months of pregnancy and it was really good for her. She used to be thin too and I remember my parents commenting on that, but the pregnancy weight she gained made her look soooo good and young. We always complimented her on how good she looked and told her never to lose the weight again. Okay, I better stop cause I’ve gone off from the topic. :)

I wish I could have watched it this morning but I forgot to record it before I left.

I read an article that “Beowulf” will have an advance showing on Nov.15 in 123 theatres sponsored by Regal Entertainment Theatres, nationwide. I will be both in IMAX 3-D and Digital 3-D. Fortunately for me one of this screening would near my place in IMAX 3-D.

I read also about that incident regarding Angelina was question by a reporter last Sunday’s press conference of “Beowulf”. The question was what she think about the rivalry of her and Jen regarding the pictures in “W” magazine. Angelina’s response was “why would I comment on that? It matters because………

If she said ‘our boys’, it could imply her and Anthony Hopkins’ boys, since he was with her. ‘My boys’ means Angelina’s boys, in the context of the those assembled for the interview. Brad would have to be within the vicinity or Angelina would have to do a one-on-one interview, in order for that usage to make sense.

Don’t hold your breath on that one. There is no way that ___ would ever discuss Angelina, not even ten years from now. ___ talked herself into believing that Angelina was the reason behind her marriage’s demise. She already pinned it on Brad, although she can, with sufficient motivation ie promoting a movie, mention his name and wax poetic about their relationship. But then again, that was before Shiloh came into the picture. It is doubtful that she would ever discuss either Brad and Angelina because of Shiloh because you know if she indulged a journalist, he/she will inevitably bring up Shiloh for the moneyshot.

Exactly. There is just nothing there when it comes to aniston. That is i think the reason why angelina is the target for everyone to attack especially in the triangle the press and media still love to cover. Because Angelina guarantees great soundbites. Plus, ___ doesn’t have a leg up on Angelina in any way, except for sad fangirls who don’t realize that Brad’s leaving and staying gone and keeping his mouth shut about ___ is the best thing that could’ve happened to her.

Plus, Angelina is emotional but controlled. You always get the feeling that you have to tiptoe around ____ because the fangirls latched on to her alleged fragility in the wake of the breakup.
