OlderNicole Kidman: I Was Less Relevant Being Married to Tom Cruise
Nicole Kidman (in Jil Sander) attends a special screening of Margot at the Wedding presented by The Cinema Society at NYC’s Tribeca Grand Hotel on Thursday. The 40-year-old actress joined costar Jennifer Jason Leigh and Leigh’s real-life spouse, Noah Baumbach, who wrote and directed the film.
USA Today just published a great interview with Nicole. Here are some great snippets:
On not being relevant while married to Tom Cruise: “Tom and I, we moved and moved and moved. Your sense of where do I come from becomes less and less relevant. A lot of my life, particularly when I was working so much, it was about trying to fill in the gaps. Now there’s much more reason to exist in the world without my identity needing to be through work.”
On what’s next: “I’m going to Germany to do a film called The Reader for six weeks. Naomi Watts, my girlfriend, is going to be shooting in Berlin. She just had a little baby. She’s doing a film with Clive Owen there. I don’t know Germany at all. I’ve been to the Berlin film festival, and that’s it.”
On globe-trotting and if it ever gets to her: “I get sick of being away from my family. The actual traveling, I enjoy. I manage a pretty good life in terms of ducking and weaving and having protection. I’m not someone who seeks out paparazzi photos. I prefer to be left alone. Most of the time, I work out ways to navigate the cities, but I get recognized pretty much all about the world, which is a weird feeling sometimes. Not in a bad way. People, in general, are just lovely. They just say, hey, they do a double-take, that’s the general thing.”
On how she maintains her flawless skin: “I wore a lot of sunscreen. I never go in the sun. I’ve had one skin cancer on my leg, and I rarely get in the sun, so that just shows you. They cut it out. Stay out of the sun, because it is the worst thing in terms of aging. I’m very medical. I come from a medical family.” (Her father is a clinical psychologist, and her mother is a nurse educator.)

i like her, especially after she “escaped”, but when did her lips get so plump? hmmmmm
she ws as white a few yers ago and everyybody as in awe of her, how she dressed, her hair, etc. I thimk that except for the somethings that she has made to her face, she looks the same. I loved Cold Mountain, the Other, and many more movies.
I wish her well, I like her better now, she must have loved Tom, but now she is more her own person

I admire nicole kidman, I think she’s remained true to herself all these years. Surgery or not, I admire her for bucking the trend of too tan actresses, hello every single starlet out there worth her borrowed chanel. She’s never confirmed nor denied plastic surgery so I won’t bother getting bothered by it. I’m all for it AND staying out of the sun. SERIOUSLY, it’s so bad for you! why does she always mention tom in almost every interview, it seems she keep using her previous relationship to promote her new films. she has two children, and she never seems to mention them with any conviction for them. whatever you say about tom, i always get the impression his children come first!

Those worried about all her working obviously have no clue about either real life, or movies. Working mothers are away from their kids all the time, five days a week. She makes movies a few weeks at a time, with plenty of time off in between. Six weeks for one movie, folks. Then it’s months off at a time.
When she says she misses her family, it’s her mom and dad and sister in Australia she means. Kids and husband come with her, just like Tom and Katie, and other movie stars. People think that Angie and Brad are the only ones who travel for their job, or that they are the only ones taking their kids with them. They ALL do. See how she said she was moving all the time with Tom and the kids?
She is not ALWAYS mentioning Tom, unless you are only learned to read about two years ago. She never mentioned him during her relationship except for the obvious “we” type of things, for “we are going to England to shoot a movie” kind of thing, or for the last few years after the divorce. Now, when asked, she will answer, but does not bring it up.
Also, she was married for ten years and had two kids — that’s a big chunk of life and impossible to ignore.
The larger picture at the top of this page reminds me of Tom Cruise! That’s weird! When my girlfriends moan on to me about being single and is it because of the way they look etc etc, I always bring up Nicole Kidman. You can look like a film star and still all you can get is a drug addict. So, celebrate your single status.

Nicole went on and on in this interview about Keith Urban, but jared only chose to focus on one very small mention of tom. I KNEW that would happen when I read the interview. I said to myself watch and see don’t the whole focus of this interview in the press be about Tom. She probably was asked about tom and politely answered, but we’ll never know that.
i like her. her being white as a ghost doesn’t really bother me. she’s still gorgeous. and she’s a great actress. totally not overrated.
