OlderNicole Kidman: I Was Less Relevant Being Married to Tom Cruise
Nicole Kidman (in Jil Sander) attends a special screening of Margot at the Wedding presented by The Cinema Society at NYC’s Tribeca Grand Hotel on Thursday. The 40-year-old actress joined costar Jennifer Jason Leigh and Leigh’s real-life spouse, Noah Baumbach, who wrote and directed the film.
USA Today just published a great interview with Nicole. Here are some great snippets:
On not being relevant while married to Tom Cruise: “Tom and I, we moved and moved and moved. Your sense of where do I come from becomes less and less relevant. A lot of my life, particularly when I was working so much, it was about trying to fill in the gaps. Now there’s much more reason to exist in the world without my identity needing to be through work.”
On what’s next: “I’m going to Germany to do a film called The Reader for six weeks. Naomi Watts, my girlfriend, is going to be shooting in Berlin. She just had a little baby. She’s doing a film with Clive Owen there. I don’t know Germany at all. I’ve been to the Berlin film festival, and that’s it.”
On globe-trotting and if it ever gets to her: “I get sick of being away from my family. The actual traveling, I enjoy. I manage a pretty good life in terms of ducking and weaving and having protection. I’m not someone who seeks out paparazzi photos. I prefer to be left alone. Most of the time, I work out ways to navigate the cities, but I get recognized pretty much all about the world, which is a weird feeling sometimes. Not in a bad way. People, in general, are just lovely. They just say, hey, they do a double-take, that’s the general thing.”
On how she maintains her flawless skin: “I wore a lot of sunscreen. I never go in the sun. I’ve had one skin cancer on my leg, and I rarely get in the sun, so that just shows you. They cut it out. Stay out of the sun, because it is the worst thing in terms of aging. I’m very medical. I come from a medical family.” (Her father is a clinical psychologist, and her mother is a nurse educator.)

She isn’t saying she was less relevant while married to him, she’s saying her background and where she came from became less relevant and unfamiliar because of all the hustle and bustle around her. You’re making her sound like she said she thought people didn’t care as much about her when she was with Tom Cruise which makes her sound like she cares about having the spotlight on her, and she states the exact OPPOSITE of that a few questions later.

To all of you who are making fun of Nicole being light-skinned, I just want you to know that not everybody can get a dark tan. i am a natural blond and my skin is very pale. Frankly, I don’t want to look like a sun-dried raisin!

Perhaps it is you that should “get over” the infatuation with Tom Cruise. I don’t start to drift off thinking about him from the mere mention of his name.

Yes, but it was still about the period she spent with Tom. In her Lady’s Journal interview last year she said she loved him and then in this year’s Vanity Fair she mentioned a baby she lost a long time ago and that nobody knew about. I mean, I’m no cult apologist or Tommygirl fan, but it’s such a stark contrast because he never mentions her.
I do think she’s talented, has f*cked up herself badly with botox/plastic surgery but not yet to the point of no return and is a perpetual sympathy-seeker, hence her constant pity-me interviews. Yet, she doesn’t annoy me in the way Aniston did.

I agree with the non-victim sentiment though, but lumping that whiny Aniston creature with Nicole, who really DID have a reason to cry foul and NEVER DID and NEVER HAS, is stupid. Uma Thurman, Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon– these women have held their heads high and gone on with their lives without the need to bash the man they were previously in a relationship with.
Nicole is, and always has been, the epitome of class.
She’s sounds like she has not recovered from the brainwashing she endured while married to Tom. She sounds very, very self-absorbed. Nicole, get over yourself.
Lately, she seems to be settling for QUANTITY of films, rather than quality. I like Nicole but she seems quite arrogant these days. Hope she starts being more selective about the roles she chooses or she’ll be headed on a downward spiral like her ex.

This was a great article, but of all the segments to have posted this would not have been my preference. Just because there’s one question related to Tom Cruise does not mean it’s the most interesting one. And word to whoever said that the title completely misquotes her.
I’ve always liked Nicole. It makes me sad to see her use Botox but she is still a very beautiful woman and a great actress. The amount of bashing she gets for keeping her skin its natural color rather than doing fake tanning or tanning and risking skin cancer says some sad things about our society and its beauty requirements. And as another fair skinned girl, I’ve always been happy to see she hasn’t bent to the pressure. I hope she really is happier as she says she is.

Give me a break she is aging just like the rest of us wrinkles around the eyes, bridge of her nose enlarged pores. Eveyone says her skin is so perfect yes from far away. All of us look good. The lips are enhanced or she burned the hell out of them sucking a tailpipe of a bus. She is human people. Got lucky made a million and married a million twice.
i wonder if she thinks that she is relevant now-she used to be hot when she was with tom, and i don’t think she would be anything if she had not been with him. now she’s had too much crap done to her face, and she looks like a pancaked ghost
