Hollywood is casualty of war as movie-goers shun Iraq films

The wave of recent films set against the backdrop of war in Iraq and post-9/11 security has failed to win over film-goers keen to escape grim news headlines when they go to the movies, analysts say.
In a break with past convention, when films based on real conflicts were made only years after the last shots were fired, several politically-charged films have gone on release while America remains embroiled in Iraq.

Almost without exception, however, the crop of movies have struggled to turn a profit at the box-office and in many cases have received a mauling from unimpressed critics as well.

“Rendition,” a drama starring Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal about the CIA’s policy of outsourcing interrogation of terror suspects, has taken just under 10 million dollars at the box office, a disastrous return.

Oscar-winning director Paul Haggis’s latest film “In the Valley of Elah,” about a father investigating the death of his son in Iraq, earned favorable reviews but less than seven million dollars following its release in September.

Even the action-packed “The Kingdom,” starring Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Garner, fell well below its 70 million budget with around 47 million dollars in ticket sales.

The poor returns do not augur well for more war films due for release in North America later this month, notably the Robert Redford-directed drama “Lions for Lambs” and Brian De Palma’s hard-hitting “Redacted,” based on the real-life rape and murder of an Iraqi schoolgirl by US soldiers.

These movies have to be entertaining,” Harris told AFP. “You can’t just take a movie and make it anti-war or anti-torture and expect to draw people in.

“That’s what happened with ‘Rendition’ and it has been a disaster,” he said.

“People want war movies to have a slam-bang adventure feel to them … But Iraq is a difficult war to portray in a kind of rah-rah-rah, exciting way.

“And it’s just too close to home. The Vietnam war movies didn’t start until long after the war was over.

“But here for the first time you’re seeing things that you’re reading about.

“I just think it’s something that people are not willing to pay top dollar to see, especially when we get so much coverage at home for free,” Pandya told AFP. “At the end of the day it’s not content people are willing to pay for.”

Angelina Jolie says watching Brad Pitt bond with their children has given her emotions she’s never experienced before.

The Oscar-winning beauty - who has three adopted children, Maddox, six, Pax, three, and two-year-old Zahara as well as 17-month-old daughter Shiloh with the ‘Fight Club’ star - has been blown away by how easily Brad has taken to fatherhood.

ITAWY. TGS premiere was there first rc after the two years of silence. Angie looked so demure. And Brad looked so sweet and protecive of his lady. The really shone as a couple. Some people should not be upset if their Man is not doing well at the box office. Even box office kings have a dry run. Suck it up and be a Man. Lions for midgets is getting slammed by the critics. It is being hailed as the new Gigli(sp_. This does not look good for Tom who is trying to launch a major studio.

If you come to a thread of the Jolie-Pitts where you know they have fans, smearing and lying on the couple and their children, then expect put downs and factual counterpoints. BP and AJ have a large international fan base. They have fans that are rooting for them personally and professionally. Deal with it.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford: Any movie languishing on the shelf for close to two years will always have a hard time, and this gritty, authentic western about the fallen folk hero failed to find an audience, but Brad Pitt could find an Oscar nomination.

‘Gangster’ still holding strong and ‘Claus’ looking bad

Rated R or not, people finally decided to go see a good movie as what should have happened with the battle of The Kingdom and The Game Plan, American Gangster has taken the top spot at the box-office as Friday estimates show it taking it $7.2 million as it shows on 3,059 screens. However, this is not the big story of the day. Bee Movie has actually not dropped off as much as expected. Bad reviews “bee” damned as the little animated feature is now estimated to bring in $25.7 million after taking in $6.2 million on Friday. This pretty much proves that you don’t have to make a good movie to make money, you just have to make a kid flick, because Bee Movie is terrible.
The big question is whether or not the kiddies will support Bee Movie more over the weekend, or if enough adults will turn out to give American Gangster it’s second winning weekend in a row.

Taking it in the ass, and rightfully so, is the Warner Bros. release Fred Claus. The new Christmas flick that was oddly released two weeks before Thanksgiving is expected to bring in around $20.5 million after its $5.2 million Friday opening. Following up Fred the political war drama Lions for Lambs, which given the current environment it is no surprise that it only managed $2.1 million on Friday and is trending toward a $7.2 million weekend.

The other new releases include the late-to-the-game thriller P2, which managed only $660k on Friday and then the great Coen brothers flick No Country for Old Men bringing in $350k as it played on only 28 screens in its limited theatrical rollout.

It didn’t find an audience because Warner Bros dumped the Movie and rode the clooney train. However, as BP stated, a good movie will find an audience. BP is getting critical acclaim for his role. Hopefully, as with Babel,it will get a wider audience as the Award season progresses. Both BP and CA performances have been praised. Either way, BP and Plan B made a film they can be proud of. You know instead of all the antiAmerican war films that Hollywwod thought we would buy into, a film about a famous Western outlaw like Jesse James should have been mass marketed to the West & midwest. Properly marketed it would have made good money. Who in the big cities mainly on the West coast and East coast, cares about Jesse James when they have their own local badguys like Frank Lucas, Al Capone, etc? But yet these are the cities that had limited showings of TAOJJ.
