Angelina Jolie Pens ‘Economist’ Article

Angelina Jolie has penned an article for The Economist, a London-based weekly international news and business publication.

According to Britain’s The Guardian, Angie’s article will be published tomorrow in the Economist’s annual spin-off issue, The World in 2008. Angie’s piece covers the “accountability for the atrocities in Darfur” and her photo byline describes her as a “goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.”

Angelina Jolie: Hollywood actress, UN goodwill ambassador, mother-of-four and now author for The Economist!

UPDATE: Here are some quotes:

– “Accountability is perhaps the only force powerful enough to break the cycle of violence and retribution that marks so many conflicts.”
– “I hope that the Sudanese government will hand over the government minister and the Janjaweed militia leader who have been indicted for war crimes (by the International Criminal Court in The Hague), and that the teenager I met in Chad will get the trial he seeks.”
– “I hope that those responsible for the atrocities in Darfur will be held to account, not only for that young man’s sake, but for the world’s.”

guli, if you got my e-mail this is what I wanted to know. Was the dragon, in Beowulf, the mother or her son by Beowulf? Remember when the dragon died and it transformed into that golden man lying on the beach? My daughter says it’s the son. But in the cave Angie, monster, was lifting up and then the dragon came flying out of the cave. So I thought it was the monster. But it transormed into the man, it must have been the son. If so why wasn’t it deformed like Grendel? Peace

Dina—- I talked about this with my Rana and hubby and we were all convinced that it was the son. It was so intense visually that I feel like I missed details since I was so engaged with visiuals. Dina, when Grendel started you know chewing ….I closed my eyses I couldn’t watch it, but when Angie was grieving over Grendel with that sweet voice, I felt for him and her as a mother….Does that make any sense, I really felt sorry for Grendel and his mother???? I mean they both were evil, but….????

OK, now that the boys will be home, well one arrived and left to meet his friends, duhhhh…. we are going to see the 3d version again since the boys didn’t see it this weekend, so I’ll be able to focus more to the topic rather than the visual impact of this gorgeous movie….

Good night sweet Dina #1, tomorrow I will talk to you again… Sweet dreams…

It is my interpretation as well that the dragon is Grendel’s Mom and Beowulf son. My reasoning as why the dragon turned into a golden version of an good looking man versus Grendel doing so was due to the appeal of the two father. The King( Anthony Hopkins) was very slovenly and not fit while Beowulf was very buff.

Another thing that I noticed was how Grendel’s Mom rose up out of the water and seemed somewhat tender to the dead Beowulf. Then we see the boat sink. Did Grendels’Mom take the body to her cave. What sort of feelings did she have for Grendel. Also, with the ending of the story, I wonder if she would have attempted and suceeded in seducing Beowulf’s right hand man and new king. Would this have been the third king or would be king she had a son with. Angelina’s character may have only been in the movie 10-15 minutes, but she was certainly a cental character the plot revolved around.

IMO, the reason why Grendal was so deformed was due to various clashes with the villagers. I also think that he was born with some of the deformities and the mental instability. In addition, he knew who his father was, his father didn’t acknowledge his paternity and his father encouraged people to harm him. And let’s not overlook what his mother could’ve done to him. To me, that makes the King a pretty perverse person and yet, he had power over Grendal i.e. the lure of the celebrations in the kingdom always attracted Grendal and enraged him at the same time and in the way that Grendal turned tail and ran when the King challenged him. Grendal was a deeply conflicted creature.

As for why the new son wasn’t as grotesque as Grendal, well, he only made his appearence known when Beowulf showed up at the cave. While the King probably sent people to kill Grendal, Beowulf really buried the fact that his son existed, therefore he wasn’t as tore up from the floor up like Grendal. But again, it begs the question of what Grendal’s mother told the new son in order for him to go after Beowulf without hesitation. Was the only reason to conceive the new son was to avenge Grendal?

And I don’t think that the looks exchanged between Grendal’s mother and Beowulf’s number two was about her seducing him. First of all, I don’t think he was capable of being seduced because he had his head on straight throughout the whole thing. I think that both the number 2 and Grendal’s mother represented both sides of Beowulf; the side that could be easily tempted and the other side that understood the importance of duty, discipline, and service.

Piper, your comments makes sense, but what did you make of the final scene between Grendel’s Mother and the dead Beowulf. It di9d not seem like she was angered or upset with Beowulf after he killed her second son and died in the process. It seemed like right before the ship sank she showed tenderness with him. Maybe she evened had respected him. I also thought Beowulf showed a little tenderness with his son after he turned into a golden man.

The bond between Grendal and his mother was definitely strong, though it’s not to say that she didn’t love her new son. I think that it was about honor in a way. Remember that confrontation between King Beowulf and that soldier from the opposing side? One of Beowulf’s men said that it was a violation for a King to take up arms. Therein lies the cowardice of the first king. The King wanted Grendal dead, probably long before he became the grotesque creature that Beowulf killed.

Beowulf, on the other hand, knew that his son was out there, but he lied, which in many ways, protected both the new son and Grendal’s mother. The curse over the land was of Beowulf’s making, not from Grendal’s mother’s machinations. People wanted to be Beowulf, but they were aping his actions, but not the virtues he tried to adhere to. When Beowulf went after his son, it was man to man-dragon. It may have been the way of the tradition, given that the country was in a constant state of change due new religions and hierarchies. Maybe Grendal’s mother appreciated Beowulf’s recognition of what had to happen.

It is to Beowulf’s credit that he demonstrated some tenderness to his son because, again, his keeping quiet about his son’s existence prevented years of mental torment and physical attacks.

guli, piper with a low, and tabith thank all of you for responding. This is like TAOJJ. You have helped to clear up the dragon for me. I thought it was the mother. Because remember when they were in the cave she rose fluttering her arms, and the dragon flew out. But when it died it turned into the golden man. I was confused on that point. But you are correct Beowulf did so tenderness toward his son by reaching over and touching him. I think the mama monster felt something for him. Didn’t she lean over and kiss him before his ship sank?
My daughter and I were discussing whether she was going to seduce the Beowulf’s friend. Part of me says yes. Part of me says no. I think they both understood one another. And thus respected one another. My oldest daughter and I are going on Wednesday to see it. This so much better than having to deal with all of the bullsh*t at JJ’s.

Hey guli, I hope you didn’t think me rude in my reply to you concerning my post about dealing with the trolls on Saturday night. No, I wasn’t angry at the trolls. I was angry at myself
for engaging that fool in the first. I usually resist them. But for some ungawdly reason I took the bait. Please be aware that unless a BAMPZS fan goes just totally crazy I would never be rude to one. joliepitts forever. Peace

Dina #1—ohh come on don’t think anything about it. I have reacted and responded so many times to these trolls and then asked myself ‘now why did I bother’. But, we are all human and we have so many other things going on in our lives that sometimes, at least I feel like enough is enough of this BS and lash out….

Ladies—dina#1, piper and tabitha thank you so much for your comments. I am definetly seeing it again and we can always meet here to discuss further if you all would like to continue this?

GUUULIII! Hi, I’m here. This thread is really buried, lol.
:) :D Ok, see these are the only faces I know how to make. I have to go to lunch, but I’ll be back in about an hour. You can wait for me to give me the explainations if you want, or just post about it before I get back. Either way’s cool. :) BBL

I think Angelina should get a Phd in a university somewhere and stop acting. It’s clear how much she wants to show her intellectuality to the UN.
**************************************************************
Sorry but intellectuality is not a word. Intellect would be the proper word for the sentence you have composed. In order to get a PhD one needs to have earned a Bachelors first. I disagree that she wants to “show she is intelligent.” Your actions, demeanor, verbal and non-verbal communication usually are enough to indicate how intelligent or ignorant you are. Angie has clearly demonstrated how intelligent she is.
——-
Many public persons have been given an honorary PhD. It wouldn’t surprise me if sometime in the future Angie will be one of them.
‘The Economist’ is one of Britain’s very distinguished publications.

Hiya felinelilly—

OK, these are the ones I use most ofte. Just put your cursor on the face and it will tell you what to type :-)

 :-(

There are more if need them let me know :-)

It will probably be next week before I will get a chance to see Beowulf again. I’m glad we found another thread to discuss the movie in more detail. This movie certainly is a bit more omplex than one would have thought before seeing the movie.

Please let’s not bring the troll’s post here. Please let them stay away on the other thread. That is the only way we will be able to have a civilized discussion. Once they find us they will try to undermine this thread also. Peace
