The Economist has published Angelina Jolie’s article for their annual spin-off issue, The World in 2008. CLICK HERE to read the full article.
In other news, Angelina Jolie’s adoption of daughter Zahara in July 2005 was completely legal, the agency involved said on Thursday.
Tabloids reported earlier this week that relatives of two-year-old Zahara, including a woman who says she is her birth mother, want the child returned to Ethiopia.
“The court in Addis Ababa approved the adoption after studying the document her grandmother wrote … saying her daughter, the mother of Zahara, had died and she was too poor to bring her up,” Tsegaye Berhe, the head of Wide Horizons for Children adoption agency told Reuters.
“The grandmother brought three witnesses to court who testified that Zahara’s mother had died and that her father was unknown … The court also investigated the social status of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt before approving the adoption. [The adoption was] legal and irrevocable. The controversy is media hype by unethical journalists exploiting the poverty of the grandmother.”
In other words, reporters paid the relatives to raise the dispute.

A year for accountability
Angelina Jolie, goodwill ambassador to the UNHCR, hopes for progress in bringing war criminals to justice
On a recent mission for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, I had the opportunity to visit a refugee camp in Chad just across the border with Sudan. Sitting with a group of refugees, I asked them what they needed. These were people who had seen family members killed, neighbours raped, their villages burned and looted, their entire communities driven from their land. So it was no surprise when people began listing the things that could improve their lives just a little bit. Better tents, said one; better access to medical facilities, said another. But then a teenage boy raised his hand and said, with powerful simplicity, “Nous voulons un procès.” We want a trial.
A trial might seem a distant and abstract notion to a young man for whom the inside of a courtroom is worlds away from the inside of a refugee camp. But his statement showed a recognition of something elemental: that accountability is perhaps the only force powerful enough to break the cycle of violence and retribution that marks so many conflicts.
I believe 2008 can be the year in which we begin seeking true accountability and demanding justice for the victims in Darfur and elsewhere. Through accountability we can begin the process of righting past wrongs, and even change the behaviour of some of the world’s worst criminals.
The international tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and for Rwanda have shown the way in convicting heads of state and generals for genocide and crimes against humanity. The UN-backed special court for Sierra Leone has already sentenced three former leaders of a pro-government militia to jail for war crimes committed during the country’s civil war in the 1990s.
In Cambodia, the joint UN-Cambodian court to try top former Khmer Rouge leaders with war crimes and crimes against humanity has begun calling witnesses. It has taken a long time to get even this far, but a trial is likely in 2008. In The Hague, the International Criminal Court (ICC) has begun trials of two of the Congolese leaders charged with fomenting killings and rapes amid the violence that has raged there for over a decade.
Make no mistake, the existence of these trials alone changes behaviour. Seeing the indictment of Thomas Lubanga and the detention of Germain Katanga by the ICC brought to mind a trip I had taken to Congo five years ago. In the Ituri region, where Mr Katanga’s reign of terror had been most intense, our group attended a meeting of rebel leaders. They had gathered in a field to discuss the prospects for a peace agreement—which were not looking very good. The conversation turned hostile and the situation grew extremely tense. At that point, one of my colleagues asked for the name of one of the rebels, announcing, perhaps a bit recklessly, that he was going to pass it along to the ICC.
It was remarkable: this rebel leader’s whole posture changed from aggression to conciliation. The ICC had been around for only five months. It had tried no one. Yet its very existence was enough to intimidate a man who had been terrorising the population for years.
Ending the cycle of violence
This is not an isolated example. Accountability has the potential to change behaviour, to check aggression by those who are used to acting with impunity. Luis Moreno-Ocampo, the prosecutor of the ICC, has said that even genocide is not a crime of passion; it is a calculated decision. He is right. Common sense tells us that when risks are weighed, decisions are made differently. When crimes against humanity are punished consistently and severely, the killers’ calculus will change.
My hope is that these examples of justice in the name of accountability will be just a few of the many to come. I hope that the Sudanese government will hand over the government minister and the janjaweed militia leader who have been indicted for war crimes by the ICC, and that the teenager I met in Chad will get to see the trial he seeks. I hope that those responsible for the atrocities in Darfur will be held to account, not only for that young man’s sake, but for the world’s.
Only through justice will we achieve peace. And only when there is peace will the world’s nearly 39m displaced persons and refugees be able to return home.
The strong preying upon the weak and the weak, upon achieving strength, extracting retribution: this is the nature of so many of the world’s conflicts. The role of aggressor and victim may alternate over time, the tools of destruction may become more sophisticated, but little else changes.
Despite the horror I have seen in my travels, the hopeful lesson I take is that we can begin to put an end to the cycle of violence and retribution that gives rise to war criminals and sets forth floods of refugees. Let 2008 be the year in which we see the principle of accountability put into action.

It’s called Karma. She was rude about Madonna and now it comes back to her! She should have defended Madonna when she knew the press was against her and she knows how hard adoptions can be. But instead she was nasty. Now looks what is happening! I am sure that Z will want to see her real grandparent someday. Whether or not the adoption is legal bio parents and grandparents should always have rights to a child. Angie should take that child to see them.
Perhaps Angie should have offered this family the thousands she is spending on this child to help support the family and keep this baby. Babies as much as possible belong with their brith family.

Here we have an example of two extremes: Angelina Jolie educating herself and trying to make a positive difference in the world and the tabloid press showing the depths of their cruelty and dishonesty.
It takes courage and strength to look at suffering and atrocity and still be positive about the world and our potential.

You think someone should lose their child because they were allegedly ruse to Madonna? That is psycho sick. Angelina wasn’t rude or nasty and she apologized for her assessment of Madonna’s adoption but it looks like she was right given the problems Madonna and Guy Ritchie have had finalizing the adoption of David — a child with a living parent and yet you seem fine with Madonna taking him out of the country away from his father and not visit since. Madonna is probably afraid if she takes David to see his family the authorities won’t let leave again. Since you are so adamant about babies needing to stay with their birth parents where is your criticism of Madonna?

All the tabloid lies backfired this week, didn’t they?
Something occured to me yesterday with People retracting the “split pant” story. The story made it on the radio and I’d heard it for three days straight in their entertainment reports. They even had a “Call in and tell us if you’ve ever had it happen to you” segment. I haven’t heard anything on the station about the fact that the story was false. That means that millions of listeners probably still believe that Angie split her pants. It’s not a big deal, but that means that millions of trash readers will believe In Touch’s story, as vile as it is, because it’s now in circulation. All the rags should be shut down if they’re going to sink this low. They shouldn’t be allowed to freely attack children like this. It’s absolutely disgusting! The media medium right now is scary, but THANK YOU ANGIE FOR WRITING WORTHWHILE ARTICLES.
I think its a generally well thought out article, the vocabulary is a little elementary (meaning it will be less likely to appeal to ir scholars or theorists, what have you) but the intention was there. I wish she would have used more facts, though…just to cover all the bases. At least she cared enough to take the time out to write the article. And it would be nice to see the ICC actually DO something :)

Angie was NOT at all rude in her comments about Madonna. Of course if you only read the tabloid account of what she said you might get that idea. She was asked about the adoption, and said:

At least AJ is oblivious to most of this stuff. I remember at LA premiere of O13 some one of the TV airhead entertainment show hostesses said “oh we heard about the poem pendant Brad designed for you birthday blahblahblah” and Angelina had the most dead blank look on her face I’ve ever seen and said “I don’t know about that I got something else very sweet.” She really blocks this stuff out! You know what I really LOVE? That NEITHER Angie nor Brad or any of their representatives made a comment about the Zahara story. Instead, the Ethiopian adoption agency is the one which made the official statement. I think OutTouch was expecting them to respond in some way, but, they must be somewhat disappointed that once again, their target isn’t paying them any attention.

During Angie’s latest promotion for the movie ‘Beowulf’, Angie said that friends tell her what’s being written. So I am sure that she and Brad were told about the latest round of lies about Zahara’s adoption. I bet even Cindy G. got calls about it, too.
When it comes to the children it’s a whole different ballgame where Angie and Brad are concern. It’s one thing to lie about them and another to lie about their children.
I don’t think it’s the Mini Van majority who reads these tabloids. They are into Martha & Oprah & Colin Cowie, Tiffany charm bracelets and having a Danielle Steele novel life.

1) Angie was in no way rude towards Madonna.
2) Why should the birth family always have rights? When you think about it, blood doesn’t really mean much. Angelina and Brad are Zahara’s parents and they are her family now. End of story. I think taking her to see her bio family at such a young age would do more harm than good. When she’s old enough, she can decide on her own whether or not she wants to meet her bio family.
Angie is a truly remarkable human being. I am so proud to be her fan.
She’s smart, articulate and passionate of her cause. I can’t think of anyone in hollywood past or present that has achieved the worldwide status as she does right now. Angelina should keep the baby. It is hers legally. One question though: why is Zahara’s grandmother in poverty? Why don’t Brad and Angelina financially support her? Just like David Banda’s father. How can celebrities adopt poor kids and live with the fact that tehir kin is living in poverty? This is the tricky part of adoption. Angelina should support the grandmother. It is Zahara’s bloodline.

that is why there are so much problem right now, because of the bad media, and of course mostly people are buying this magazines are people who doesn’t know the real about anything. What the media write on their magazines that we read, we absulotely believe them right away. The educated people never buy this magazine because they are smart and know the truth. You know what I really LOVE? That NEITHER Angie nor Brad or any of their representatives made a comment about the Zahara story. Instead, the Ethiopian adoption agency is the one which made the official statement. I think OutTouch was expecting them to respond in some way, but, they must be somewhat disappointed that once again, their target isn’t paying them any attention.

I’m not taking offense to your comment, but I AM a lower income woman. I’ve actually never had a whole lot of money, even growing up. However, I never thrived on misery and I’m very thankful for all I have today. I’m not envious of wealthier people. I think the people who ACTUALLY BELIEVE the trash mags are people who are easily influenced and don’t ask questions. I, and all the fans here, have enough of a brain not to believe it and to get informed.

It is not about who had plastic surgery or who gained too much weight or who is dating whom. This is about ADOPTION and the life of a CHILD.
People who are not informed can be easily manipulated. Can this people think a little aside from their paychecks?? Don’t they have kids or relatives who have kids?? How it would be like if they were in Brad’s and Angie’s shoes?? How it would be like if THEY had adopted a child and someone was writting that the adoption is illegal with no proof or facts?? How would they feel??

Angelina should keep the baby. It is hers legally. One question though: why is Zahara’s grandmother in poverty? Why don’t Brad and Angelina financially support her? Just like David Banda’s father. How can celebrities adopt poor kids and live with the fact that tehir kin is living in poverty? This is the tricky part of adoption. Angelina should support the grandmother. It is Zahara’s bloodline.

Angelina adopted Zahara as a single parent and made that very clear at the time. Brad went to Ethiopia as a friend. Maddox was on the trip as well. Brad wasn’t with her when she was united with Zahara. There is no provision in Ethiopian adoption law for unmarried couples to adopt. In fact, most countries with international adoption programs don’t allow adoption AS A COUPLE if you aren’t legally married.

Zahara would not be here had she not been adopted.She would have died, according to the doctor. Isn’t it hypocritical to talk about blood relatives and scrutiny of Brad and Angelina when this vibrant little girl would have died?
The true test of her birth family’s love is in their being happy that she was saved from that situation and is now healthy and part of a loving family.
It doesn’t take just blood and sperm to be a parent. Blood is not everything. There are parents out there who abuse their children daily. Should I call them parents because of sharing the same blood??

I think the adoption story is being discussed because Jared has put the statement from the Ethiopian adoption agency here. I really really like that he did that too. He’s probably the only blog to do that, but, he’s always been different from the rest. So, I guess there are two topics people can discuss, the adoption one, and the article that Angie wrote. :)

I forgot to comment on the article… it is great, but as I read it, I can’t help but think that although the refugees are in a decidedly drastic circumstance, in terms of seeking out justice, Angelina, despite having major bank, is also in a precarious situation when it comes to seeking fairness for herself and her family.
If she were to go after the tabs, how would that look? Suing over flyspecks, although this b^ll$hit about Zahara and Shiloh is especially nasty, could magnify how out of touch and frivolous the Western world can be.

Sam - While I agree with you that blood families are not necessarily ‘not important’, my humble opinion is that you are seeing this case in a black and white situation. Adoption carries with it a lot of issues that cannot be put in a simple equation as ‘birth families have rights, therefore adopted families should respect those rights.’
When Z’s grandmother gave her up for adoption, she was giving up any legal rights to her grandchild. Did that make her a bad grandmother? Not necessarily. She most probably did do it out of extreme poverty. Does she really want to see her grand daughter again? She most probably does, and I feel for her pain, but adoption is not about her. It’s mostly about the child.
From what I can tell, Angie and Brad are very loving parents, and any decision they make will be for the best interest of their child, as they see fit, just like any good parents. It’s possible that they feel that at this stage in Z’s life, she should have stability, and therefore bringing in someone whom she probably doesn’t even remember would create that imbalance. Maybe they would prefer that Z face this when she is much older, and able to decide on her own if she wants to do it or not. Does Z want to see her grandmother? Maybe.. or maybe not. She’s too young to really decide.
These are all speculations on my part, much as any other scenario anyone else outside this family unit would have (including your own speculations as to why they’re not doing it). Bottomline is, there is no ‘one size fits all’ answer when it comes to issues like this. It’s a judgment call that Angie and Brad reserve the right as Z’s parents - and yes, they ARE her parents. Don’t quite understand your guys excitment over bewolf. The success of this movie has nothing to do with angelina. She is in it for 6 minutes. Any naked hollywood beauty could have the same effect. I forgot to comment on the article… it is great, but as I read it, I can’t help but think that although the refugees are in a decidedly drastic circumstance, in terms of seeking out justice, Angelina, despite having major bank, is also in a precarious situation when it comes to seeking fairness for herself and her family.
If she were to go after the tabs, how would that look? Suing over flyspecks, although this b^ll$hit about Zahara and Shiloh is especially nasty, could magnify how out of touch and frivolous the Western world can be.
Our country has made Angelina very wealthy, but really, our country hasn’t been very good to her, has it? Many of us criticize her from sun up to sun down and yet, she really hasn’t done anything to compromise our safety, our well-being, or our quality of life.

I am just saying: Angelina is aware the grandmother is poor and is aware of her existence so why noto help her financially. If she did not know of her existgence then there is no one to help but how couild you enjoy Zahara everyday and yet know her grandmother is poor as dirt and not help her? Same with Madonna. To my way of thinking they bring diverse variety of ways to view the same situation. There is room for everyone to participate in this issue. See, you’re thinking that’s how Zahara is going to think and react when you like me don’t know if that’s going to be the case. Angie has said she talks to Maddox about his being adopted and I would think she tells him everything about where he came from. If she does that with Maddox, I’m sure she’ll do the same with Pax and Zee and any other adopted child they may have. I read in some articles that she just travel by herself with a back-pack as luggage to go to these troubled countries as an Ambassador. The UN think or she thinks it would be safer to travel this way. It is secretly done, and when they think she’s safe that’s the time a UN reporter send the news and pictures all over the world about her trip.

AJ is a major star. Tabs and obscure websites use her to get hits. The negative the article, the more hits it generates by haters and envious people looking for something to hate her for or libel her. It is a simple fact. Use BP or AJ name in your article and your web site will see an increase in hits.
Whether written with a snarky tone, outright lies or even positive information, BP and AJ are good business for an obscure website, tab or blog. AJ is helping in the way she knows how. It is easy to sit behind a desk and not get involve. It is easy to hate those that take chances and risks to help others. The good thing about AJ is that she knows she has critics. However, this does not stop her from living her life and performing her UN duties.
The fact is AJ is a well-respected UN Ambassador; writer for influential journals; a well-regarded actress; a devoted Mother and partner. Some are questioning Angie’s right or ability to write for the Economist. Angie has never described herself as an intellectual or an academic. But she has been described, by others, as a quality communicator. There are different ways to communicate and all are valid if the message one is trying to convey is understood and received. Abstract and obtuse verbage is not neccesarily a sign of good communicating skills. Ronald Reagan, possibly one of the least intellectual American presidents in recent times, was none the less considered a “great communictor.”
Angie’s mission was to write an article describing what she saw, felt, smelled, and knew about a situation that is killing thousands of people. And that she did. C. Rice is an intellectual and an academic who is not a great communicator. There is no warmth in her words. No sense that she has touched or felt any of the things she is talking about. Maybe Angie could have enlisted someone to help her with writing her piece. But then she wouldn’t be Angie. Her piece will rise or fall on her merits. You write as you speak. And Angie is straight forward and to the point person. The horror of murders, rapes, mutilation should not be abstracted or discussed in cold academic rhetoric.
Those who really want to know the sounds of the pain and suffering of the people of Darfur will appreciate Angie’s piece. Those who want to know but don’t need the emotional connection will select something else. Angie doesn’t position herself to be anything other than what she is, a human person trying to help other human persons. And for that effort we should all be thankful. Peace

The Jolie-Pitts owe Z’s birth family absolutely nothing. They unloaded her at the orphanage when she was desperately sick because they could no longer care for her. At that point Z became a ward of the Ethiopian government until the J-Ps adopted her.
I can feel some sympathy for Z’s birth family who are desperately poor and are ripe for manipulation by the tabloids. My contempt is reserved for the tabloids themselves and the trolls who believe everything they print.
