Hairspray! The Beat Goes On

I think what a lot of people seem to be missing is what actually constitutes a successful acting career. Some people become celebrities, other people become actors. Nikki Blonsky is in the latter category. She may not be able to play ‘every’ role but she will play MANY roles because she by definition of not being your sterotypical lead a character actress and this is a plus factor in her career NOT a minus. Let’s remind ourselves of another young actress once considered unconventional…

“I never had ingenue status in my life. I was never allowed to do that. I was definitely a character actor. I always thought of myself that way from the time I was blinking awake. I never had that starlet thing. I didn’t think I looked that smashing. I needed to be engaged in my work.”

THR: You played a romantic lead opposite Robert Redford in 1985’s “Out of Africa.”

“By then I was not a starlet. That was a mature woman. I never had that other thing — which saved my life. If I had started out that way, things would have been different. It’s hard — once people place you in a glamorous universe — to break out of it.”

Hollywood pretty girls are 10 a penny, truly great character actresses are rare and in demand.

“I think I was the only actress who told the producers that I didn’t give a **** about taking off my clothes and showing my fat ass and my sagging tits and everything else to the whole world, when I auditioned for ‘About Schmidt.” I think the Academy gave me a nomination for that one so that I would never take off my clothes on camera again.”

A sense of humour about herself and not afraid of what the world or the industry thinks of her.

These are the people Hollywood truly respects.

Nikki could act in a variety of roles for years, never being a ‘leading lady’ and yet she would still be a highly successful actress. I believe she is a character actress with crossover potential like Streep and Bates. She will build a career because based on her choices so far she has a strong team behind her and is staying out of the Hollywood rat race, you can play the game on your own terms if you make a decision about what you want to be. Do you want to be a star or do you want to be an actor? I know which I’d rather be.
