OlderAngelina’s Adopted Daughter Conceived During Rape?
The Ethiopian baby adopted by Angelina Jolie was conceived after her mother was raped, reports Reuters.
Mentwabe Dawit, mother of two-year-old Zahara, claims she was 24-years-old when she attacked one evening in 2004 after a day’s work at a construction site in the southern Ethiopian town of Awasa.
“[A man approached me in the darkness.] He pulled a dagger, put one hand on my mouth, so that I could not scream. He then raped me and disappeared,” Mentwabe said with tears streaming down her face. “[I kept the assault a secret because] I feared the consequences of being raped in a community where rape is considered a taboo, even if what happened happened forcibly.”
Mentwabe gave birth in the family’s earth-floored house and she named the little girl Yemsrach which means good news in the Amharic language.
“I was unable to feed Yemsrach,” Mentwabe said. “My baby was on the verge of death. She became malnourished and was even unable to cry. I was desperate and decided to run away, rather than see my child dying… “I have never disputed the adoption of my baby by Angelina Jolie. I think my daughter is a very fortunate human being to be adopted by a world famous lady. I wish them both all the success they deserve.”
There’s also a video report of Mentwabe talking about how fortunate Zahara is to have been adopted by Angelina.

It is wonderful that Zee has the opportunity to live a good life, even if she was conceived in rape, she is precious and a treasure to all who love her. May her birth mother be able to live life in peace knowing that the child she gave birth to has a good life.

she is NOT dead,she LEFT Z WITH GRANDMOTHER and run away and was mia for a long period of time then the grandmother thought that she died and give z away and told the court that z is a AID ORPHAN.

I agree with Coco. Nothing supports this woman’s claim. The grandmother and adoption agency both agree that the mother is dead. This woman is not the first to come forth and claim she is Zahara’s birth mother.

Something odd is occurring in the media this week. First Us Weekly decides to dig up a story about a suicide in Britney Spear’s family. And now a respected news wire is talking about a child being a result of rape. Is there any respect for family and privacy? I have nothing against this woman, I don’t believe she is the mother, but do we all need to know this? What about Zahara? the Spear’s family? This need to exploit people has reached so far that nothing crosses the line anymore. Anything and everything is supposed to be our business. This does not sit well with me.
Whoever this woman is I wish her luck in her life.

I,personally, am a huge fan. BUT, I am just sick and tired of the constant media circus around this family. Why does the story only focus on how she concieved? In this country rape is a reason why many people give their children up as well. When you learn that you are a child of rape there is no interest on either end to learn who’s who.

Since I enjoy this site, and do not wish to be banned, I will not comment. Except to say that many, many African women are suffering and their children are suffering. Taking one or two of the children away from their people will not solve the problems that centuries of repression and colonization and under-development has caused. I am glad that Zahara’s mother is given a voice for all those women who are suffering under the shame of poverty.
So Zahara was never a orphan, just the child of a poor, frightened woman in a poor repressive country.

“Taking”?!… Angelina did not “take” anything. She went to an adoption agency and adopted one of the kids that was there for adoption. Kids that were dying. Z is only alive because Angelina adopted her and took care of her. Unfortunaly most of the kids that were with Z died.

I agree with those who say this is a disturbing trend in the media. Why print this in a celebrity blog? If I was thinking of adoption, and I was a celebrity, I would be having second thoughts right now. Stories like this are going to cause children who need homes not get them because people will be afraid of birth parents coming back to haunt them.

Thanks JJ. My gut says this story is true and Angelina/Brad/Grandmother/adoption agency were all honest in their collective belief that Zahara was orphaned by death due to AID’s. I also have no problem believing thdt the JP’s will assist their daughter’s birth mother in any way they can.

I totally agree with you. Dispite the heinous way Z was conceived, I hope her birth mother will be able to get some peace of mind knowing that Z is alive, healthy and being cared for, and has all the opportunities the world has to offer.

I am so disgusted by this whole story and this woman who CLAIMS to have be Z’s mother. This is so obviously a sensationalized, attention grabbing story, as with anything to do with Angelina. I, too, wish that Brad’s publicist will end their silence on this sick lie as it seems to be growing like wildfire. The saddest part of all this is that some family out there will decide against adopting overseas, denying a child’s life be saved, and all because those trashy tabs need to continue their smears against Angie, and now her oldest daughter, Zee.

I agree with those who say this is a disturbing trend in the media. Why print this in a celebrity blog? If I was thinking of adoption, and I was a celebrity, I would be having second thoughts right now. Stories like this are going to cause children who need homes not get them because people will be afraid of birth parents coming back to haunt them.

I’m very confused. Some report the mother was raped (so tragic) and couldn’t care for her daughter - as said above - whilst others claim she died of AIDs. Whichever one is the truth, they are both tragic. God bless this woman.
It must have been a truly heart-wrenching time, to give away her daughter. But, she knew it was the only way her daughter would be given a chance to live…food & clean water.
Zahara is a beautiful precious little girl, God bless Ange and Brad (also) for taking care of her…and giving Zee a the chance at life she deserved. The chance at life all children deserve.

Ok this story is most likely untrue. Right now some of the biggest money scams towards Americans come out of Africa. Why? Because Americans seem to be gullable to believe anything they read, hint email scams & mail scams. This seems to be an very well ochestrated lie to get money from the media outlets that will pay for a fabricated story without one ounce of “paternity” or “dna” before spewing out a story. Just reading some of the comments here proves that people pretty much beleive everything they read before authenication is given. Those who say she looks like “Z” well there are probably a lot of people in Ethiopia that may have similarities to her but that doesn’t mean they are related just like there is somebody in our country that may look like us, but that doesn’t mean we are related. This story is heartless and very mean spirited because it is putting a horrible story out there about an innocent child who probably knows she is adopted but might/will have to hear about the lies that the media made up about her adoption because of whom she was adopted by. What next Maddox or Pax mother is going to rise from the dead or come forth to make claims on them??? Why did Reuters find the need to report this? Is it really necessary for Zahara to be able to find out in future that she was conceived from rape? The adoption was legal, Zahara was saved from death, and she is now part of a happy fmily. What good can be achieved from these findings? When Angie chose to adopt a child from Ethiopia, this was the child that was given to her. She was told at that time that the mother of the child had died. What was the reason behind Reuters’ need to hunt this woman down if indeed this is truly Zahara’s birth mother? How can they justify this as news that the public needs to be aware of?

I would just like to make a statement regarding X’s Vanity Fair excerpt a few posts up the board. It is very clearly stated by her that the marriage couldn’t be reconciled. She says the relationship was complicated and not just one thing but many things caused its demise. This is true in many ended relationships if not all. With that said, that excerpt above should clearly be seen in concurrence to what Brad and Angelina have said all along. Attraction? Yes. Cheating? No. Brad and X grew apart long before Angelina came along. They both changed, wanted different things in the relationship as well as in life. X states there are many things she’d do differently if they remained a couple. Hindsight is always 20/20. I doubt if she’d change for long before reverting by to the old ways. That’s why relationships hit snags and lag on… running in place. We revert to our old ways. Again, any other interpretation is beyond my understanding.
For the record, people aren’t stolen. They might get abducted or kidnapped but never stolen

She also paid special tribute to all those working with refugees. “In any UNHCR office, in any one of the many areas around the world, you will find an amazing mix of hard-working and often very tired people. There’s a missing link to this story.
The gramdmother put the child for adoption but there were many children in that orphanage. How does that lady know that the child that Angelina has is the one she gave birth to? Did someone tell her? She was supposed to be dead but really ran away.
When did the grandmother tell the daughter that she gave the baby up for adoption?

I hope everyone puts this story to rest quickly. Zahara will face her real mother and the truth of her father one day as an adult. I have no doubt that she will be educated and loved enough to have compassion for her real mother and her mother’s unfortunate cicumstances. I think it’s unfair to blame Z’s birth mother for telling her story. She has no understanding of how the journalist/tabloids work. She seems to only be trying to clarify what really happened, I’m sure she found the whole experience with the journalist very confusing and unlike anything she has ever seen or experienced before. While our days are spent watching the celebs and find their lives entertaining Z’s birth mother’s days are filled with only trying to survive.
I hope Ang will reach out to her and try to help her quality of life as much as she can. Something odd is occurring in the media this week. First Us Weekly decides to dig up a story about a suicide in Britney Spear’s family. And now a respected news wire is talking about a child being a result of rape. Is there any respect for family and privacy? I have nothing against this woman, I don’t believe she is the mother, but do we all need to know this? What about Zahara? the Spear’s family? This need to exploit people has reached so far that nothing crosses the line anymore. Anything and everything is supposed to be our business. This does not sit well with me.

How can it be okay for a bunch of vultures like these so-called journalists (and they have now infested the once-respected “legit” and “credible” news sources) how can it be okay for them to plaster people’s private life all over the public media like this?
Supply and demand my a**! In civilized societies, people’s private life dont get plastered all over the media unless they give an interview and answer questions posed to them. After that, then they know their story is gonna be made public, but at least they gave consent!
Well if all the authorities can say is “its a matter of supply and demand” then those of us who are outraged by the paps and the bottomfeeders like the trashloids, should start making some demands of our own, so that an enterprising entrepreneur can jump to supply us.

So Angelina should get in contact with this woman and help to improve her quality of life? What does she need? Food? Shelter? Because from where I sit, this woman is in unusually high spirits for someone who’s grappling with ’staggering poverty’. I agree - the grandmother, mother and Zahara look very much alike. Angie always said that Shiloh could look at her and brad and identify, now Maddox and Pax have each other - maybe this is a way for Zaharah to really see herself in another face. If any of you had heard that interview on the radio with Jane Aronson, Angelina’s pediatrician and founder of Worldwide Orphans yesterday, all of this would seem ludicrous. She gave crystal clear accounts of what to expect on international adoptions. also on the sho was a woman who was adopted and decided to look for her birth mother. She made it clear that the interest was purely cultural and that her parents, the one’s who raised her, are her family.

I think what you need to remember is that regardless if this woman is or is not Zahara’s birth mom, she is also a victim here. For all you know, the tabloids came to her and told her Zahara was her daughter and paid her money to tell her story. And being poor, she probably accepted it. And I don’t blame her in the least. The ‘rat’ as you said in this story is only the media. They exploited a woman who has endured a lot of pain and stress to sell magazines.
And why would Brad be mentioned? Angelina adopted Zahara as a single parent. Brad had nothing to do with the process besides being there as moral support. Even if at that moment Angelina considered him Zahara’s father, he could not legally adopt her because they are not married. Angelina’s name is the only one on the paperwork, so obviously any question of the legality of her adoption would be addressed to her, not Brad.
I think we should most of all feel sympathy for the poor woman who has been dragged into this media storm. She has obviously been misled, exploited and had her words twisted to fit the story the media wanted to print. I am sure Angelina would feel the same way. There is no moral ground in the media anymore. It is all about the dollar.

Ok this story is MOST LIKELY UNTRUE.
Right now some of the biggest money scams towards Americans come out of Africa. Why? Because Americans seem to be gullable to believe anything they read, hint email scams & mail scams. This seems to be an very well ochestrated lie to get money from the media outlets that will pay for a fabricated story without one ounce of “paternity” or “dna” before spewing out a story.
Just reading some of the comments here proves that people pretty much beleive everything they read before authenication is given. Those who say she looks like “Z” well there are probably a lot of people in Ethiopia that may have similarities to her but that doesn’t mean they are related just like there is somebody in our country that may look like us, but that doesn’t mean we are related.
This story is heartless and very mean spirited because it is putting a horrible story out there about an innocent child who probably knows she is adopted but might/will have to hear about the lies that the media made up about her adoption because of whom she was adopted by.

Lora, thank you for posting that article again. I don’t think this woman is Z’s mother either. My adopted son’s birth mother was also a rape victim. There is nothing wrong with that. The agency told us right away and she signed legal papers with the agency when she selected us to adopt my son. Why all these claims all of a sudden? Brad and Angie’s names are being used for everybody’s 15 minutes of fame. Now the tabs are going to this since the break-ups, pregnancy, wedding, etc. concepts have been exhausted. How pathetic. What the hell is happening to media? I can understand when tabloids’re writing ****, but when this is done by one of the most respected agencies in the world - it’s just unbelievable.
I live in Russia and I’ve been a great fun of Brad and Angie for 3 years now and all this time russian tabloids were writing the same **** as american (they took all the info from american tabloids). But now it seems that all have gone crazy because they’re fabricating TERRIBLE stories. Just TERRIBLE! My mum and I were having breakfast on Sunday morning and one of the radio stations reported that Jolie miscarried. My mum had her cup of coffee fallen down from her hands. How can people speculate on such things?????And now this dirty story with Z s0-called-bio-mother as if it is not enough.

I thought this was all made up. Why are there new reports? I understood that the Jolie-Pit lawyers were very careful about the background checks. This mother is being exploited no matter if she gave birth to Z or another child. I think a woman who gave her daughter up for adoption would dream that she went to a family like the Jolie-Pitts. If her motivation was to contact Z she would have tried through the adoption agency and the Jolie-Pitts not the world media. While I feel for this woman, she hasn’t put much thought into how her approach would affect Z’s new family. She must be motivated by money.

I agrree with many of the sentiments expressed here. I admire people like Angelina and Bono. Me, I can barely muster the energy to look after myself but it would be very petty of me to fault others who go above and beyond their immediate world concerns. I often wonder if the haters are people who, for their own sense of self worth, need to see celebrities as below them to the degree that they can’t even believe the altruism of folks like Angie and others is possible. Although I can’t get off my *ss I’m glad for the world that at least there are others prepared to do so. So to you fellow clones and parasites, chill, and stop projecting!

And still she does it wherever she goes – on , whenever she’s at a hotel, she orders up extras: extra shampoo, extra lotion, even extra bathrobes, taking EVERYTHING home… yes, even the bathrobes. The bathrobes that are washed then used again by every guest staying in that suite, she insists on bringing it all with her. Including the gifts too.
She is also not shy with special requests. Lighting fixtures, humidifiers, strollers – kinda major items you’d think would be on loan, right?
Wrong.
She packs those up with her too. The woman leaves NOTHING behind.
The question is: what does she do with it all?
Would you believe she gives it to her staff? She saves the little soaps and gels and crafts them into small baskets and presents them to the nannies and the housekeepers as bonuses!
Can you imagine? Can you imagine a Christmas gift basket full of hotel shampoos and conditioners?

You can’t do anything about Outtatouch except to associate the magazine with the story.

Jared - I love you man for all the threads you put up for the BAMPZS fans, but this is one we could do without. Putting up a thread on how Z came into this world wasn’t the coolest thing to do. I know it’s slim pickins with the Jolie-Pitts mostly out of sight in LA, but we could have stayed with the Angie & Mad thread until something better came along. Jared, really, with all due respect, was it necessary to put this information on here? It’s nobody’s business how Z was conceived. Rape is devastating under any circumstances, and especially in third world countries where the victim often finds herself treated as if she were the criminal and ends up as a social outcast, despised by her own family. Never mind that Reuters was insensitive enough to print this item with the mother’s name, she deserves some consideration. Z is part of a warm and loving adoptive family that adores her, and that is all anyone needs to know. Please, no more information about her birth parents, whoever they are. Enough is enough.
it’s sad that such a personal thing is so public. z will never have any privacy over this. other parents can choose not to let their adoptive child know about a violent past like that but A & B can’t protect her from it.
