Brad Pitt Drops ‘State of Play’

Brad Pitt has dropped out of State of Play and Universal Pictures is currently trying to replace him, according to Variety.

If Brad’s character doesn’t recast and get the picture going by Nov. 29, it will begin losing the other actors in the film and Universal can bring a lawsuit against Brad for bailing.

Brad was set to star alongside Edward Norton, Helen Mirren, Rachel McAdams, Jason Bateman and Robin Wright Penn in the Matthew Michael Carnahan-scripted adaptation of the British miniseries. Brad was playing a politico-turned-journalist who spearheads a newspaper’s investigation of a murder, a trail that leads to the fast-rising pol whose campaigns were once masterminded by Brad’s character.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Brad has pulled out because of script concerns and the script cannot be worked on due to the writers strike.

Who could possibly fill the shoes of Brad Pitt??

174 SNOOPY :

Brad was not arguing with the director, it’s the script which he doesn’t agree with.
The director was an Oscar winner ? never heard before, he has only one succees in the last king of Scotland. and last king was not even nominated as best pic and best director in Oscar and Golden Globe.
I think the young director must be begging for Brad return.

One of the troublemakers here who somehow got my email address sent me this message :

Universal is screwed. Brad has final script approval and it’s in his contracts. This is the first time that Brad had the pay or play cause in his contract. And it’s most likely due to him not being comfortable with the re-writes and he’s had this issue with Universal before.

The studios don’t want the writers to know that the strike is affecting projects.

We’ll see if others drop out and that might be why Universal put the threat to sue out there. They might not have clauses in their contracts.

I just finished watching Kalifornia and d@mn, he was great in it. He was Early Grayce; creepy, slimy, and downright psychotic. And completely undesirable.

While his looks reminded me of Mickey O’Neil, there was no redeeming quality to Early at all. Further proof that when Brad ‘hides’ his looks, his approachable disposition, and the ‘it’ quality, he is an excellent actor.

In addition, I can totally see Brad ditching State of Play; the role sounds like it has a Tom Cruise/George Clooney feel to it - a roguish b*stard who has the world on the string who decides that the world is suddenly worth saving.

Prada this is not a tabloid rumor or gossip. This is Variety. An extremely credible publication regarding film industry. C. Guagenty just confirmed that Brad has dropped the project.

Brad liked the script as it was first adapted by Carnahan. But the script went through many states of re-writes and it got screwed up in the end.

Brad wanted to wait a bit more until the writer’s strike will be resolved so the script will return back to what it was at first with a FINAL re-write. The studio didn’t want to wait because they wanted to release the film in 2008 no matter how the script was. Brad didn’t accept that and backed out.

Brad Pitt drops out of ‘State of Play’
Universal will try to recast by Nov. 29
By MICHAEL FLEMING

This article was updated at 5:01 p.m.

Pitt ankled the film early Wednesday, following two weeks of struggle and meetings with director Kevin Macdonald that prevented the film from making its original November 15 production start date. The studio considers Pitt to have walked out of a pay or play commitment, and is leaving open the option to sue him if the picture cannot be recast in time to keep the other actors in place.

The studio has already begun trying to replace Pitt. But while strike-related production postponements on films like “Angels & Demons” and “Shantaram” made stars like Tom Hanks and Johnny Depp suddenly available, Universal has a very small window to work with. If the studio doesn’t recast and begin production in L.A. and D.C., it will begin losing other cast.

Pitt’s camp disputes that he violated a pay or play deal, that he ever approved a final script, or that he even wanted to drop out of the film that he has been the driving force behind for 16 months. At issue is a disagreement with the studio over the final direction of the shooting script.

The film has been a high U priority since the studio and producers Andrew Hauptman and Working Title partners Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner landed the project after a hot bidding battle. Pitt became the first talent attachment, when he agreed to play a politico-turned-journalist whose loyalties are tested when he spearheads a newspaper’s investigation into a murder that leads to the fast-rising pol whose campaigns the journo once ran (Daily Variety, July 27, 2006).

Pitt sparked to a script by Matthew Michael Carnahan, who adapted the Paul Abbott-created British miniseries. While the actor went off and made several movies in quick succession, most recently “Burn After Reading,” Universal went through rewrites by the likes of Peter Morgan, Tony Gilroy and Billy Ray. While the film attracted a sparkling cast, Pitt’s vision departed with that of the studio somewhere along that rewrite trail.

Numerous films have been unplugged within the last week because of the writer’s strike, but the others were by mutual agreement between the studios and the filmmakers. This was different. Pitt wanted to wait for a strike resolution to get a final rewrite that brought the film back to Carnahan’s original. Universal brass liked the rewritten script better, and told Pitt to honor a contractual commitment so that the studio could release the film for late 2008.

Thanks for posting this, I am so with Brad on this. The studio is screwed, Brad was perfect for this role, a lot of people were excite because he was going to be in it. I don’t think there is anyone out there that can replace him. He was just perfect for that role IMO

209 question??? : 11/21/2007 at 8:53 pm
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The studio has to pay him regardless, if he plays in the movie or not. Universal is saying he didn’t walk for script reasons. That final script approval gives Brad the right to walk and makes Universal accountable to pay him.

Brad wanted to wait out the strike to get the script back to the version he signed on for. The studio wanted the movie/needed the movie in their 2008 lineup.

Basically, Universal doesn’t it want it out there that he had issues with the script because with the strike, adjustments can’t be made.

Exactly!! The script has been completely off due to the back to back re-writes. Universal insisted to release the film in 2008 just to show that script writers are not that important and that films can be done without their help. WRONG!!! Brad just showed how much script writers are needed and that he is not going to be a part of a project without having a satisfying script. He supports them.

Their strike has already shown the affect it has in studios and films.

I have a feeling that some others of the cast will drop off also.

Guli, I am being stalked by someone from here by private email . See my previous post. I have contacted Just Jared. It is one thing to be stalked at this site. It is another thing at my email address. I believe this person got my email adrress from a glitch here at Jared when we sometimes see other peoples screenname and address. I do not take kindly to being threatened not to post. I believe it is famous who is behind all of this.

SNOOPY -

Regarding the movie state of play, neither the director nor the writer are Oscar nomineee.

The director directed the movie The last King of Scotland in which the actor won at the Academy and the Golden Globe. It’s the actor who won, NOT the director.

As for the writer, he wrote Lions for Lamb, and The Kingdom. Both movies grossed disappointingly.

Are you getting SENILE? I doubt that. You are just a LIAR

Poor Brad looks wh¡pped.

As in PỤSSY-WHÌPPED!!!

Ludwig von Mises, you are just jealous. you wish it were you who were whipped.

Well, given that Brad Pitt is a very mediocre, bland actor, it shouldn’t be difficult to find a replacement. And one that is likely much better than Pitt!

Guli, You are probably right. It just bothers me that this hateful loser managed to get my email address from a glitch here at JJ. Now this person may be able to find out my real name and other personal data.

#163: thank you, asd. Yes, it was very interesting. From what I gather, Angie tops Brad and Brad tops all others in popularity & press releases? They’re comparing Beowulf and POC but the former has only been out for less than a week and POC has already had the original plus 2 sequels all over the world.
