Russell Crowe to Replace Brad Pitt

Universal Pictures is trying to replace Brad Pitt in State of Play with American Gangster star Russell Crowe, according to Variety.

Just this past Wednesday, it was announced that Brad dropped out of the film because of disagreements about the shooting script.

We’ll find out early this week if Russell will take on the political thriller and/or if Universal will follow-through with a lawsuit against Brad for bailing.

Nov. 29 is the last possible date Universal has before they start to lose the other actors in the film (Edward Norton, Helen Mirren, Rachel McAdams, Jason Bateman and Robin Wright Penn).

You think bp would of done better than rc in American Gangsta Cinderella Man or A Beautiful Mind? NOOOO bp is much better looking but he couldnt out do what rc did

rc could of did Babel and probably would of done it better

Was Snatch based on his looks? Was California based on his looks? Was Seven based on his looks? Was 12 monkeys based on his looks?

No, Thelma & Louise was. His breakout hit. Would he have gotten the role if he was ugly?

They are both good actors. They are different in the roles they play but both are good. Let’s not turn this into a silly competition.

=========================

You say that but why are the joliepitt fans insulting crowe and making it a competition?

good point @ 11/26/2007 at 11:24 am

This is NOT about pitting two actors against each other.

This is about HW studios and how they are willing to destroy a good project to get money.

It is looked like to say, would RC get the gladiator role If he didn`t have good body shape for it?it looks just like it.

So are you saying RC is ugly? lol!
And shows how little you know. Most fans of Angie and Brad hate the moniker “Brangelina” and never use it.

Can you read, I said BRANGELINA fans critisized his looks and he didn’t use his looks to get to where he was. You think his work in The Insider made him famous because of his looks? You think Ridley Scott loves to work with him because of his looks?
And what does that have the last thing have to do with what I was saying anyway? Fans use it all the time.

Geez, lighten up. Your post where you comapred the two and then asked if BP would successful if he was ugly. It sounded like you were asking if he was ugly like RC.

And yes, ALL actors, even RC get their feet in the door by looks initially. I recall how RC was considered sooooo handsome during the Gladiator days, but sadly, now the alcohol bloat has taken hold of him. He’s a good actor, sure I never said he wasn’t.

And no, fans of Brad and Angie by and large do not use the “brangelina” thing. They are called the J-Ps, or some people use their initials. I think most of their fans here would agree with me on this.

I doubt that Russell Crowe will take this. If he does, it’s just another paycheck, Kaching! I bet Brad called up ol Russell and asked him if he wanted to do it.

Like someone mentioned before, this movie has nothing to do with Brad anymore.

We need a new thread.

it may not occur to the brad fans but….not everyone in the world finds him to be sexy and/or a great actor. i’m sure i will get attacked for even making this very true observation.

111 georgie

no you won`t get attacked.you can say your opinion.you don`t find it sexy,I do.we can agree in disagree.

BTW your comment and my comment don`t count at all in the HW`s world. :)

Oh sweet Lord. Would Crowe have gotten Gladiator without those thighs he had at the time?

This is silly. Crowe hasn’t even taken the role yet. He probably won’t.

Brad may even wind up back in the part before this is all said and done.

Like someone else up thread already said, this isn’t some blockbuster movie anyway. It’s a political thriller, which sadly is over the heads of most of the masses to begin with. Brad wants it to have a smart, good script. There’s no sin in that.

I actually like Russell Crowe. I loved Cinderella Man, A Beautiful Mind, Gladiator. I was not interested in 3:10 to Yuman and I didn’t care for him in Amgerican Gangster but they needed someone so……

As if Russell Crowe could ever take Brad Pitt’s place. So sad — Brad has been devoted to this project for almost 2 years and Universal kicks him to the curb over their schedule issues. How come Crowe is available? Projects are dropping right and left because they need the writers back! Thanks Brad for not caving!! The studio should listen not only to the actor Pitt but the producer that was the driving force behind getting The Departed produced — really, really stupid. I read Nicki Finke says Variety sat on the story about BP leaving for 10 days — why — to make BP look worse?

:),
i know…..

People should stop it now! Why all this good looks, bad/good actor, it’s bullsh*t, Just hope RC takes it. end of

hopefully Brad fans find Him handsome and a good actor. That is what a Fan is.

sayitsista @ 11/26/2007 at 11:32 am

Hey Georgie, agreed. Careful though, they’ll have the knives out for you now ;-)

georgie -

whatever, you dont represent the majority. Hollywood loves him. He is one of the few who has domestic and the international appeal. Overseas is a huge market. We all love him.

Sure, Thelma and Louise was his break out role, but it isn’t his only role. Many of his roles since that break out role have not been based on his looks.

Personally, I thought the younger russell crowe was rather good looking in Gladiator - which was his break out role as far as hollywood was concerned. he certainly wouldn’t have got that role looking like Danny de vito!!!!!!!! (exclamation marks for janice).

Russell Crowe is fine. They should just cast him and call it a day.

yes IWAV was good so was 12 monkeys and seven but look how long hes been doing this dont you think he should have more good films than he does? You wanna blame the “bad performance run” (your words) on the TV girl ok. BP is a “good” actor but HONESTLY do you think he would be at his level of fame without the whole break up AJ stealing him from TV girl blah blah drama? NO his personal life and looks helped his career far more than his acting. Now look at the movies hes been doing as of late they all of them have substance unlike before

chrisie,
i guess in your hurry to respond, you missed the part where i stated, “not everyone in the world”. try rereading a post before you comment on it. btw…”whatever”? you are how old?

Will Russell Sign and Make Me Eat Crowe?

I didn’t report on Brad Pitt dropping out of State of Play last week because, primarily, it is a much bigger story than a lot of the folks third-partying it are making it out to be. This is more than just a “Brad Pitt drops out of movie” story. In fact, this has a lot to do with the writers strike and while it may seem like a **** move on Pitt’s part, it is in actuality a smart move and a move that the majority of A-list actors that can afford to drop films should do.
The new story regarding the state of State of Play is that Universal is presently chasing down Russell Crowe to replace Pitt, and then there is the idea that Johnny Depp also has an opening in his schedule since the production for Shantaram crumbled as well as Tom Hanks who say Angels and Demons suffer a setback due to the strike.

The film was originally penned by Matthew Michael Carnahan (The Kingdom, Lions for Lambs) and then rewritten by Peter Morgan, Tony Gilroy and Billy Ray. The film stars the likes of such big names as Edward Norton, Helen Mirren, Rachel McAdams, Robin Wright Penn and Jason Bateman and is being directed by Last King of Scotland helmer Kevin Macdonald. Not a bad list eh?

Pitt was set to play a politico-turned-journalist who spearheads his newspaper’s investigation into a killing that leads to a fast-rising congressman (Norton). He then becomes conflicted since he was once the congressman’s confidant and at the same time he develops a relationship with the pol’s estranged wife (Wright Penn).

So why did Pitt leave? This is the question, and if you believe what the trades are saying it is because, during the rewrite process, the film wavered from Pitt’s vision.

The “NY Times” cites anonymous sources saying that “the producers asked Mr. Pitt for a speedy answer about its latest version of the screenplay several days before the writers’ strike, but that he registered his dissatisfaction with the script only several hours after the strike had begun — and just 10 days before filming was to have started.” Another “NY Times” source said Pitt “had rejected the last version of the script on Nov. 3, two days before the strike, and had tried to work out a compromise with the director, Kevin Macdonald, before pulling out.”

Already things aren’t looking good, but the “NY Times” comes next with the sentence that describes what is wrong in Hollywood:

The project was delayed while the studio tried to cajole Mr. Pitt into proceeding with some version of the script.
“Some” version of the script? Does anyone involved with this production over at Universal realize there is a writers strike? If they do realize this do they realize that nothing can be changed now that the strike is in place and until it ends?
I can only assume Pitt realized there were problems with the script and wasn’t willing to shoot something that was already set in stone. I am already anxiously awaiting when all these strike films hit theaters and the writers scream that they changed the shooting script. It isn’t going to be a pretty picture.

I can only assume, even though Hollywood trade rags aren’t openly saying it, that most of Hollywood knows the real reason Pitt pulled out of the production and if they do and if my speculation is even remotely correct I don’t see Russell Crowe, Johnny Depp or Tom Hanks jumping aboard a ship that still needs work to be righted.
