As the first event to honor independent film exclusively, Film Independent’s Spirit Awards, formerly known as the Independent Spirit Awards, has made a name for itself as the premier awards event for the independent film community. Keeping with its roots and L.A. location, the Spirit Awards take place each year inside a beachfront tent in Santa Monica, California. The Spirit Awards is a celebration of independent filmmakers who bring a unique vision and a spirit of independence to filmmaking. The Spirit Awards is produced by Film Independent, the largest non-profit membership organization dedicated to cultivating the careers of independent filmmakers, building the audience for independent films, and increasing diversity in the film industry.

********************************
Here is an explanation from wikipedia, hope it helps

Independent Spirit Awards were originally known as the FINDIE Awards (”Friends of Independents”) and presented winners with acrylic glass pyramids containing suspended shoestrings representing the paltry budgets of independent films. In 1986, the event was renamed the Independent Spirit Awards in honor of the talented and tenacious souls who drive creativity in the film industry. The Independent Spirit Awards are presented by Film Independent, a non-profit organization dedicated to independent film and independent filmmakers. In 2007 the ceremony was slightly changed to Film Independent’s Spirit Awards

That’s very late. That’s after Oscar. well, I am happy for Brad and Angie.

Angelina has an Oscar & GG but she doesn’t have a Spirit Award. I think she will win this.

She could have easily played that role in an over the top way but it was very restrained and controlled.

Cate the great will continue to knock people over in her march toward acting greatness

Don Cheadle is the man. Very good actor. Tony Leung and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, very good actors.

I loved Persepolis. It’s an animation made to look like the graphic novel it originally came from.

I think I’m gonna like this award show. Too bad it comes after the Golden Globes.

What happend to Kerri Russell’s nomination for Waitress? there was so much buzz about her in that film.

Re: Keri Russell
I saw the movie and enjoyed her performance, but IMO, it wasn’t worthy of a nomination. It’s not to say that this role shouldn’t be a feather in Russell’s cap.

At least Adrienne Shelley was nominated for screenplay. Lord rest her soul.

Congratulations to all the nominees. It doesn’t matter who wins in the end, being nominated is already a win. Congratulations, again.

I really want to believe you but don’t think so. Congrats to Brad and Angie.

(Insert sarcasm tone) Nominations for Indie films, yeah right?

Nevertheless, I still support the (FIND) organization, but there’s nothing independent about the list of (aforementioned) nominees.

troll free day, here they come, just ignore

Why worry about tomorrow. Celebrate today.

Today Angelina got the nom for her acting and Brad’s production team got a nom for Best Picture. Congrats to all.

don’t agree at all with this noms, but i respect and of course they know more about his than me…but don’t think Sienna or even Angie will get noms in oscars!

JessO–Yeah she did mention this I think it was on Larry King or Charlie Rose. She mentioned that she didn’t know the budget of the movie but she knew it was elligeble for this award. I’ll post that interview for both parts. Here is part 1 of LK interview…

++++++++++++++

Yep. You know how it is for working girls. Another day…another $2 ********. And they gotta give the pimp $1.99. What’s a poor working girl to do to make ends meet except stoop to trolling for pay…

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Its “ends meat”, stupid! Not “ends meet”. LMAOO dumbazz!

++++++++++++++++++

Dear Stalker,

Are you really this dumb or do you just play an idiot on the internet?

The phrase is, “To make ends mEEt.” In other words, there there is an object with a gap, a break or otherwise incomplete or disconnected. For instance a rope that’s been cut in two. You want to make the object whole or complete again, ergo YOU WANT THE ENDS TO MEET.

Why do you even bother posting here and trying to take on people of superior intellect. If you want to belittle people you think are dumber than you, then go to Female First, Dlisted, Perez Hilton or any of other hundreds of entertainment blogs where the people who post are as ignorant as you are.

Sorry for the interruption folks…you may now return to discussing this great news for Angie, Brad & Plan B.

No one knows what the Oscars or GG will bring. I read yesterday that Nicole Kidman was absolutely going to get the nom for best actress for these Spirit Awards. As you can tell the experts were wrong. So I am going to believe each and every day that Angelina can get a Oscar and GG nom until I am proven wrong.

Miz Angelina Jolie has previously been honored by her peers and awarded the prestigious Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her feisty role in the film Girl, Interrupted.

Now, the thespian and humanitarian seems likely to take home another Academy Award.

Jolie has just been nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Actress, a good Oscar precursor.

Ange is being honored for her role in the Brad Pitt-produced A Mighty Heart. She played the wife of slain journalist Daniel Pearl in the biopic.

The movie also scored a nod for Best Film.

Congrats to both Angie and Bradley!

Angelina Jolie Nominated for Indie Spirit Award
TUESDAY NOVEMBER 27, 2007

Angelina Jolie is already attracting movie awards attention.

Jolie was nominated Tuesday for a Spirit Award for her role in A Mighty Heart, which was co-produced by Brad Pitt and based on the life of slain American journalist Daniel Pearl.

“She could make any film she wants,” Dawn Hudson of Film Independent, which gives the awards, said after the announcement. “It’s a feat for such a movie star to be so much in that role.”

Jolie, who plays Pearl’s wife, has never been nominated for a Spirit Award, though she won an Oscar and Golden Globe in 2000 for Girl, Interrupted.

Her competition includes Sienna Miller [Interview], Ellen Page [Juno], Parker Posey [Broken English], and Tang Wei [Lust, Caution].

Other nominees included Cate Blanchett [I'm Not There], Don Cheadle [Talk to Me] and Philip Seymour Hoffman [The Savages].

Zach Braff and Lisa Kudrow, both past nominees of Spirit Awards [Braff won for 2004's Garden State], announced this year’s nominees.

“I was a giant fan of The Comeback, her show on HBO, I just loved it so much,” Braff told PEOPLE of Kudrow. “Every free moment I’ve gotten with her today, I’ve been telling her how much I love The Comeback.”

The Spirit Awards, held the day before the Oscars, will air live on IFC on Feb. 23.

I think she’ll for sure get a GG nomination. An Oscar nomination is going to be much tougher.

Sienna Miller is trying to be an indie & fashion darling but really her claim to fame is being Jude Law’s girlfriend. Who knew her before that? She’s trying to do a Nicole Kidnman

That being said, congrats to all the nominess. These nominees seem less stiff and more hip than those other awards but I hope they are not trashy like that Sally Field was.

This is such great news for jp fans all over!
Congratulations to the cast and crew of a mighty heart.
I would also like to congratulate all of the other nominees!
Being nominated for any award is awesome. For that alone I’m sure that they are very much grateful.
“It’s always nice to be appreciated for your work,” I think I heard Angelina say something along that line in an RC interview a while back.
Best of luck to all! (Especially those with good reigning in their intentions;hearts) :-)

with all due respect, she was not the only person nominated. People should be the entertainment magazine that it aspires to be. Did they mention all the others? Angelina is one among her peers, celebrate everyone who got noms.

I love this award because its not about box office. It’s about acting.

It so cool where they hold it too. They usually have it by some beach under a tent. How very California.

ignore trolls, lets make it a troll free day,we know that they will come, but lets give them the silent treatment

OMG DO YOU KNOW WHO THEY HAD HOSTING THIS AWARDS SHOW LAST YEAR? SARAH FREAKING SILVERMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well now, that didn’t take long for a troll to slither it’s way here, did it?

I hope SAra Silverman does not host this show she stincks she is not funny at all

Missing this year is a breakout commercial success like 2006’s “Little Miss Sunshine.” Of the feature and director contenders, only “I’m Not There” has opened, but it’s yet to break the $1 million mark. Of all the nominees, “A Mighty Heart’s” $9 million domestic take is the B.O. leader.

Film Independent will host the awards — which have gone green this year — in typical fashion one day before the Oscars, on Feb. 23 in a tent on the Santa Monica beach. A telecast will air on the Independent Film Channel live (and uncensored) at 2 p.m. PST.

While admitting yesterday that he “got played a little” and “was not as careful as I should have been” in posting the since-discredited story about a Weinstein plan to push I’m Not There’s Cate Blanchett in the Best Actress instead of Best Supporting Actress category, David Poland was correct in saying that Blanchett’s Dylan turn “is one of the five best performances on the year in all categories, male or female or dog or cat, if you were going to pick five…it is easily the current crowning achievement of her career.”

Congratulations to all nominees and to BP, AJ and Plan B who made AMH possible.

It is heartwarming to read that, unlike Sam, who has yet to acknowledge the Forbes crowned tabloid queen award of JA and is obsessed with BO receipts, there are many recognizing the value and the quality of AMH’s story: about a child’s father which had to be told by the child’s mother, because of their love for Adam. So congratulations to all.

but with all the things they said before nomination Tracy!!!right? She is in the supporting actress category. :)

so give it rest girl!!She is supporting nominee which is good.hope they will consider her for lead role for GG and Oscar just because I want to make you happy.

2008 Angie winner

Y’know, i’m thinking that neither the director nor anyone else working on AMH could have told any actress portraying Marrianne, how to execute that role.

As many actors have said and as Angie herself has said, its the most nerve-racking thing to play a living person, because the person is right there, in the here and now, staring at and critiquing your effort (no matter how nice everyone is about it). So it must be quite a head trip to move beyond all that and ‘get into character’.

So for Angie to have given such an overwhelming performance, one that is being hailed even by some of the harshest and most jaded critics, says quite a lot about her abilities as an actor.

It must really extract quite a bit of mental energy to have caried that off so seemingly naturally.

That’s why i have nothing but contempt for those who want to belittle this film and Angie’s performance, even going so far as to diss Marriane - for what? Sheer jealousy, envy and hate, i tell you. For absolutely no other reason - never mind the spurious reasons they spout.

Because we know that there are females out there who care about nothing and no one, and whose lives are only held together by the hatred and envy they have for anyone who appears to have it all…………….fabulous looks, a beautiful, attentive, supportive man, fabulous wealth, the most beautiful baby in the world, being so fortunate that even ‘blind’ adoptions turn out to be beautiful also, talented, famous, well loved and, when everyone else is struggling to keep obesity at bay, her ‘problem’ is an inability to become fat.

LOL. You know what, ya gotta feel sorry for haterz.

I wish Michael Winterbottom had gotten a nod for Director as I thought he also did an award winning job. Anyway, there are lots more to come so hopefully he will get recognized too.
Thanks Jared.

By Jeffrey Wells

A morbidly obese, revoltingly chummy glad-handing photographer who was sitting next to me went “ohhh” when Waitress director-writer Adrienne Shelly’s name was announced as one of the Best Screenplay nominees, so look for a possible Shelly win as a gesture of sorrow for the tragedy that befell her last year.

Either Juno’s Diablo Cody or Before The Devil Knows Your’e Dead’s Kelly Masterson will win the Best First Screenplay award — edge to Cody because she lives here now and knows how to work the town, and because Masterson is a New Jersey hermit.

Angelina Jolie may win the Best Actress award for A Mighty Heart (her best performance ever), but if she doesn’t win the rightful winner should be Parker Posey for Broken English.

The Best Actor competish will be between Philip Seymour Hoffman (The Savages) and Frank Langella (Starting Out in the Evening) — edge to Hoffman.

Blanchett, as noted, as the Best Supporting Female award locked. There’s no hear on any of the Best Supporting Actor nominees but young Marcus Carl Franklin might take it on the strength of the I’m Not There coattails.

Angie will for sure be nominated for sag, gg, and oscar. As far as I can see Jesse James will get a nom for cinematograhy, and Affleck will most likely get best supporting. As much as I hate to say it , Brad performance will most likely get ignored once again. I hope a Mighty Heart or Jesse James gets best pic, but I don’t think that will happen. It would be nice if Angie won this year and presented the award to Brad next year.

It hasn’t been ignored. He won the Venice film Festival Best Actor Award. All of his role are laying a foundation for that major film he will have that will showcase his best acting chops. It may be The Fighter, who knows? He hasn’t been ignored box office wise.

curly—where have you been, sure mmissed you :-) A great post. I am so happy for MP as well, she wrote the book b/c she wanted to keep DP’s memory alive and what he believed in.
Remember in one interview she even mentioned she wasn’t sure if she wanted the book to be made in to a movie until she met with Brad.
I am very happy for all invved including DP’s parents and Adam who will watch this movie one day about his father whom he never met…

CMAR-excellent post. I had forgotten the haters had stooped so low that in order to attack Angie they even attacked MP. Pathetic things…

Brad deserves all awards noms. He will get nominated.

who saw Parker`s performance who the writer told is in competition with Angie??

LOL. As expected..’the wannabe gurus’ in and around the net are b*tching about who got snubbed. Yes maybe some actors/actress’ were perhaps overlooked, but there are many more awards to come and so it would be best to just go with the flow and take it in stride. Calling the noms wacky and unjust won’t do a damn to change them. I’m sure there will be awards this season that Angelina and/or Brad will not be nominated for. It happens.

147 Janice

sorry What were you talking about??who were you talking with?

think positive! @ 11/27/2007 at 5:29 pm

Brad’s interview starts in about half hour…

I don’t think that the actor’s performances in TAOJJ are being ignored. As a matter of fact, all of the reviews I’ve read have praised both Pitt and Affleck for their performances, but unfortunately there are only a handful of people who have seen it. How are the masses ( and even most of Hollywood) supposed to support a film that they have yet to see? I maintain my usual sentiment that Warners did a shoddy job of marketing that film. Plan B produced it but unfortunately they had a standing contract with WB to “promote” that film. Then again, it’s all over and done with. I think the general consensus is that Warners just totally deprived the public and themselves a very praise-worthy movie. I know people will say it would’ve been a long shot, but if you ask me, that movie could’ve been the Departed of 2007 if it was marketed the right way.

(Interesting article about the creative force of BP and AJ. Ignore some snark but overall good article. Never underestimate BP)

It can hardly be a coincidence that two of the most outstanding and wholly atypical Hollywood films of the year - Andrew Dominik’s The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and Michael Winterbottom’s A Mighty Heart - are both from Pitt’s production company, Plan B. Each film offers a leading role for one of the pair: outlaw Jesse James for Pitt, and Mariane Pearl, the widow of slain journalist Daniel Pearl, for Jolie. In each case they had the opportunity to exercise their acting skills at a consistently impressive level.

The crowd wanted Casey A to win.

bwahaha #184.do really think she can do what brads babies momma did in AMH?F!CKING IDJOKE!

ok everyone i just watched the Jonathan Ross interview w/ Brad on BBC1!!
firstly, the intervew was on a Sunday (must have been when he and Angie were in London for the Beowulf premiere)…and he was wearing his hat!! which i do actually quite like btw He did look pretty tired though, but then again who wouldn’t after an 8 hour plane ride? But, hey, he’s BRAD PITT so the lucky devil still manages to look HOT .
Mainly they talked about Jesse James, but they had lots of clips from many of his other movies, including Oceans 13, Thelma and Loiuse and MaMS! (the bit where John and Jane are at the table about to tango and Brad asks her to dance..i got really excited when they played that clip!! it brought back memories ).
Unfortunately they didn’t talk about family at all and Brad only mentioned Angie’s name once when he was saying how she only took 2 days to film Beowulf while he took like 4 weeks to film some other movie. Still, i love hearing him say her name
Ummmm what else…oh yeah they talked a little about People’s sexiest man cover and how Matt made the top of the list this year. Brad said about how GC was kinda declining in that kind of area lol. It was rele funi, Jon Ross started talking about how he thinks of himself as a fatter GC and Brad was laughing..and then JR was talking about how, as a straight man, he could say that he finds other men attractive (eg. Brad) and Brad was like, “I can’t speak as a straight man”
ok those were the vaguely interesting bits..sorry if its like incomprehensible, I wrote it in a rush!

Why don’t we knock off the Team Aniston bit, please. Just because Lisa costarred with Jennifer Aniston for 10 seasons does not mean she is team Aniston. She is a profesional actress. She is capable of liking both. IF not she can act profesional and not show. IMO, I have never gotten the opinion that she was close to Aniston. Isn’t it ironic that Lisa Kudrow, a Team Aniston is announcing Jolie and AMH’s nominations.

+++++++++++++

Ummmm….it’s not quite so cut-and-dried as that. You will notice who is always absent from X’s life post-Friends. There have been photos of X on several occasions with Matthew Perry & Matt LeBlanc going to lunch or on the beach or wherever. Now ask yourself where are similar photos of her with Lisa Kudrow or David Schwimmer.

Don’t believe the Faniston myth about how the 6 of them are such great “friends”. 2 of them are great friends. 4 of them a really good friends. And the other 2 distance themselves from X-related events for a good reason - they think she’s a neurotic phony. Don’t know how they could’ve ever come to that conclusion…

Now watch a Faniston come along and throw a hissy…and whoever you are? You’d better have photographic evidence to make your case. Lots of nice friendly photos of X with Kudrow and/or Schwimmer post-Friends. Happy snipe hunting.

I am happy for everyone involved with A Mighty Heart for their nominations. This was quite a collaberation between Brad and Angelina, and a very risky one, too, IMO. If it had not turned out well, the critics would not have been kind. But it is a wonderful movie, with great acting and great directing, filmed under very difficult circumstances. Brad and Angelina can be proud of a job well done on a project that meant a great deal to both of them. Most of all, they did well on behalf of Daniel, Marianne, and Adam.

Just because Lisa played on Friends it doesn’t mean that she’s team anything. She has never said anything like that and she has been barely seen with X throughout all the years of Friends. There is no drama.

++++++++++++++++

TP has brought up a point that I didn’t even consider - how Kudrow didn’t hang out with X during the show either. Hmmmm…maybe it was because she had a family of her own? Nahhhh…so did Courteney and X still leached onto her like a barnacle to a wrecked ship.
—————————————————————–
Spot on!! Neither Lisa Kudrow and David Schwimmer hanged out with her through Friends or post-Friends. Perry and Le Blanc did in some occasions but only Cox is the one that can be considered an X friend since Friends and long after and a member of her Goddess circle.

David attended the AOJJ premiere at the TΙFF and some here where like WTF?? Some think that all οf X co-stars from Friends are automatically team X. While the reality is that none has ever said anything like that and the only one that is still a friend is Courtney. And even she was the one who said the nicest things about Brad post divorce. Well as nice as they could be of course.

jennifer on Brad @ 11/27/2007 at 8:55 pm

Hey, I subscribed to Teen Beat when I was a kid. I’ll admit it. Out loud. I was once the girl who wanted to know everything about Shaun Cassidy. I know people want to know about me and Brad. But I don’t want to go into the details of our marriage, because it’s best not to. That’s what helps keep it normal. Besides, there’s enough false information out there to last you a lifetime. But seeing there’s a theme here, I will say one thing. I’ll tell you about Brad’s laugh. I don’t know how to explain it except it sounds like a twelve-year-old boy who just threw a water balloon down on somebody. Just the other night, he was watching the Robin Williams HBO special while I was sending out e-mails in another room, and out burst that great mischievous laugh. I just looked up and giggled.

Beowulf: An IMAX 3D Experience Posts Highest Grossing Second Weekend in IMAX History
11.27.07, 7:29 AM ET

The record-breaking second weekend performance of Beowulf in IMAX theatres provides another example of how IMAX 3D can drive multiplex attendance,” said IMAX Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs Richard L. Gelfond and Bradley J. Wechsler. “As 3D content becomes increasingly available in theatres around the world, we believe that IMAX 3D will remain the gold standard and continue to be first choice for consumers who want to experience movies in a way they cannot get anywhere else.”

“Beowulf is an exciting picture that is ideally suited to IMAX 3D and the second weekend results show that word-of-mouth is clearly kicking in,” said Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. “We’re also very pleased with the international results, which serve as another testament to the people at Paramount Pictures, Shangri-La Entertainment and Warner Bros. Pictures, who have done an outstanding job of delivering a movie that resonates well with IMAX audiences globally.”

Please don’t make me choose between Ang and Prof. Librescu. I had to go with him. As much as I really admire Ang as a person, actor and humanitarian, Prof. Libescu’s incredibly brave and sad sacrifice so those weenie students could climb out windows and saves themselves makes my blood boil. All this after he survived the holocaust. He really is my hero.

I’ll vote for her tomorrow.

Great news about the Independent Spirit noms. Great award and usually funny and lively awards show. Unlike the stuffy Oscars. As you all probably know, they have these awards the evening before the Oscars under a giant tent on the beach. They are very casual and people truly dress down. They have to show them on cable because they are rather risque. It will certainly be exciting with the dynamic duo attending. I’ve had really good feelings for a while now about not only Angie’s chances for an Oscar nom but her chances for a win as well. There’s so much more to Oscar than just a great performance or even the best performance. Other factors sometimes to come into play and I think Angie’s got the best “other” factors in her favor. We’ll see.

You know Hollywood/the Industry hates to see its own attacked or treated unfairly by the tabloids. The industry may use the tabs at times but in the end they despise them. This latest Zahara nonsense is beyond unnecessary and cruel - cruel to a little girl. All these bogus stories full of poison and vitriol are just creating a backlash in support of Angie and Brad.

On a last snarky note: there goes the Friends reunion movie extravaganza. Ha ha.

This pix was taken in the LA area around July 9 or 10, 2005 or so, the day before Brad went into the hospital in LA with meningitis. Angie was in NYC as a very sick Z was hospitalized there. They had just picked up Z a few days before in Ethiopia, and had flown back to the States with Angie stopping in NYC so that Z could see Dr. Aronson, and Brad flew on to LA for the motorcycle ralley. Practically the minute Z was released from the hospital in NYC, Angie and Mad and Z flew straight to Brad in LA and moved in with him in Malibu. That was that, they have not been apart since.

No one with a brain believed that tab ‘insider’. How big of a stretch is it that the Bauer publications would/will have some sort of JP story that is negative? Specifically seeing as since May they have been on all the covers with the exception of maybe two? The psychic friends network could’ve provided that ‘inside’ info. As for Star and NE they usually feature them at least once a month so that’s a given as well. Us hasn’t really had anything on them since that dumb twisted double life cover because there is nothing going on with them (from a drama perspective). Bottom line, the tabs use these people to make MONEY. It’s not about what’s real.

People need to start ignoring these ‘insiders’…they don’t know ****!

All the major reviews, like the NY Times, Washington Post, LA Times, etc., said that Jolie detracted from the movie. They said her acting was tepid, at best, her accent was distracting, and the movie was actually supposed to be about DANIEL PEARL, not ANGELINA JOLIE. Which is who she looked like, despite the tan face makeup and hideous wig. In fact, Pearl’s best friend, and good friend of Mariane, wrote an article in the Washington Post saying how terribly disappointed she was with the screenplay and movie - she was depicted in the movie as well. All her comments and suggestions were ignored, and she was the last person that Danny talked to before he died. If she didn’t like it, than what was the point of the movie, except to win Brangelina awards?

Okay, folks…you KNOW there is nothing going on in the celeb world when Janice Min is putting the increasingly irrelevant Jessica Simpson on the cover of the mag. All because she MIGHT be dating Tony Romo? Puh-leeze. She’s just next on his list. Then again…I’ve heard him talk. He does nothing to belie the myth of the dumb jock.

Totally of topic and a litttle ranting. Okay saw on at least two entertainment shows the announcement of George and Don getting their honor from the nobel prize lauretes. Never saw anything about Angie receiving her Freedom Award, or her EW Entertainment Award. I am happy for any attention Dafur can receive. But Angie has been there several times. Somebody sounds jealous…just like Asra Q. Nomani did in her Washington Post scree. Give it up, Jen…the movie got made with a better actress who might end up with another one of those little gold statuettes that you’d sell your borrowed soul for.

to #268. Here is just my favorite review from Liz Smith of Page Six. You haters should like it too, because you love Page Six. As for real movie critics, the absolute majority of them gave stellar reviews. I wish I had the time to dig those up from JJ’s archives.

MARIANE PEARL ASKED FOR JOLIE
ANGELINA JOLIE puts her all into “A Mighty Heart.”
June 26, 2007 — ‘WE HAD something to say that we knew we should say together!” So speaks the widowed Mariane Pearl, asked by Time to comment on how she felt about Angelina Jolie playing her in the film about the murder of her husband, journalist Daniel Pearl.

Mariane went on to add, “I have heard some criticism about her casting, but it is not about the color of your skin. It is about who you are. I asked her to play the role - even though she is way more beautiful than I am - because I felt a real kinship to her. She put her whole heart into it, and I think she understood why we should do this movie.”

Indeed she did. I saw “A Mighty Heart” over the weekend, and Jolie has never been better - intense, sympathetic, strong. That she is able to submerge herself as well as she does is amazing, given that her mere appearance on-screen brings with it a lot of silly tabloid baggage. But, she’s a real actress! The documentary style of the movie takes a bit of getting used to, but once you’re involved, it’s all the way.

Kudos also to Dan Futterman, who plays Daniel Pearl. He hasn’t many scenes, but he makes them count. (You remember him as the brother in “Judging Amy,” and he was Oscar-nominated for his “Capote” screenplay.)

#251: Heeyyy, that Oscar Meyer Wiener is Aniston’s trophy! She’ll have nothing if you give it to Angie. Have a heart. Better give her the whistle too and the Wienermobile for being the pity party queen for 3 years running.

How could they ignore Taraji P. Henson in Talk to Me for best supporting actress after nominating her co-stars. Also, ignoring Kaci Lemmons for her directing of that movie? Otherwise, glad to see Don Cheadle and Chiweltel Ejifor nominated for Talk to Me.

Here’s another review. I saved it because it’s funny.

Antony Lane from the New Yorker:

How do you solve a problem like Angelina? Ms. Jolie is now more of a brand than a person, and she comes in six flavors:

1. The celebrity. Angelina Jolie is so famous that when she looks in the mirror her reflection asks for an autograph. The only publication in this country yet to feature her on its cover is The American Numismatic Magazine, and even that will change the moment she bends down to pick up a nickel.

2. The sexpot. In this she is unchallenged, and yet her timing is off by fifty years. When it comes to channelling her carnal appeal, no current film director has a clue; the guy she needs is Frank Tashlin, who guided Jayne Mansfield through “The Girl Can’t Help It” (1956) and “Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?” (1957), and whose eyeballs, if confronted with Jolie in the flesh, would pop out on cartoon springs and bob around.

3. The Brad handler. She took one look at the world’s most widely desired man and scooped him up with no more ado than a Parisian grande dame tucking a Chihuahua into her clutch bag.

4. The mother. Official estimates as to how many children Jolie now possesses, and from how many continents, change on a weekly basis. When not giving birth herself, she likes to order in. How this has affected Mr. Pitt is unclear, but his expression is sometimes that of a man who stepped out to hail a cab and got run over by a fleet of trucks.

5. The world saver. Jolie is a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Her father, Jon Voight, told the Biography Channel that “she’s developed into one of our great humanitarians.” This was clearly on the minds of political leaders when they met Jolie at a summit of the World Economic Forum in Davos two years ago. Half of them offered their entire foreign-aid budget for a chance to fetch her a mai tai.

6. Oh yes, the actress. This last talent, so often neglected, is displayed in her new film, “A Mighty Heart,” and without it the legend of Angelina Jolie would be little more than a vaporous joke.

The movie, directed by Michael Winterbottom, lies about as far from the trials of Lara Croft as is cinematically possible. Jolie plays Mariane Pearl, the wife of Daniel Pearl (Dan Futterman), a correspondent for the Wall Street Journal who in 2002 was kidnapped and beheaded in Karachi, Pakistan. The story begins on the day of his disappearance; as the horrors unfurl, we see Mariane replaying in her mind the moment when she bade her husband farewell—a wave and a smile, as he climbed into a cab. He was due to interview a Muslim cleric named Sheikh Gilani, but the arrangement was a trap.

Once Pearl has vanished, we follow the threads of rumor and report from the viewpoint of his wife, a cluster of friends, and the local police. The result, like many of Winterbottom’s films, lies an inch short of disarray; we can keep pace with the investigation, but only just, and that sense of splintering honors the unpredictability of the setting. We hurtle from the tracking down of taxi-drivers to the tracing of cell-phone calls and nocturnal raids on the homes of suspects; such momentum is undeniably but unpleasantly exciting, because we already know the outcome. However diligent the authorities’ chase against the clock, the clock will win. Promising leads hit a wall; when Mariane gets to see Pakistan’s Interior Minister, he blames the Indian intelligence services for having set up the abduction. Add the aggressive questioning of Daniel’s female colleague, Asra (Archie Panjabi), who happens to be Indian, and you get an itchy demonstration of regional mistrust.

Stronger still than the encroaching panic, however, is Mariane’s determination not to cave in to it. Those who saw her being interviewed at the time were struck by her preternatural serenity; her book, also called “A Mighty Heart” (2003), is Winterbottom’s principal source, although her title may be too noble for his manner—the dressed-down, on-the-fly approach that lends even his more formal endeavors, like “Jude” (1996) and “Code 46” (2003), an air of documentary. He is the very model of a modern moral filmmaker: not unromantic, exactly, and too impassioned for the scowls of cynicism, but baffled and perhaps a little bored by the traditional forms of romance. When his loving couples cling together—as they did, stickily, for “9 Songs” (2004)—Winterbottom loses interest. When they are yanked apart, as in “A Mighty Heart,” his own heart quickens its beat.

Mariane is French-speaking, with a Cuban mother, and Jolie is equipped with corkscrewed hair, tinted skin, and murmuring accent. We brace ourselves for a star turn, a hundred minutes of vanity project, but here’s the thing: it never happens. Jolie slips into the part, ducks in and out of the action, and generally plays second string to the onrush of events. Blessed with the world’s most recognizable mouth, she confines herself to a single, skeptical pout, as Mariane is reassured that “no one would ever want to hurt Danny.” Not so: he is an American Jew investigating Muslim extremists, and, as his wife knows, that makes him a marked man.

Only once does Mariane crack. Informed of her husband’s death and of its savage circumstances, she goes to her room, crouches over, and keens. It could be the howl from a Greek tragedy, except that our heroine is not disporting herself on a stage, majestic in her grief, but filmed from so close that you can count the ***** of vertebrae at the top of her spine. By this time she is heavily pregnant, and her screams are a terrible parody of birth pangs—an echo that Winterbottom makes explicit, without needing to, in the closing scenes. This hasty, high-intensity, barely consolable film is just the kind of tale on which he thrives—and, more surprisingly, on which Jolie will come to depend if she wants to keep her head above the tides of madness in which, partly on her own initiative, she has chosen to float. Will success spoil Angelina Jolie? Not yet. Can she help it? Yes, she can.

A Blow to the Heart

By Ann Hornaday
Washington Post Staff Writer

Amournful sense of inevitability pervades “A Mighty Heart,” in which Angelina Jolie stars as Mariane Pearl, whose husband, Daniel, a Wall Street Journal reporter, was kidnapped and beheaded in Pakistan while his wife and a team of colleagues and investigators frantically tried to find him. The movie, an adaptation of Mariane Pearl’s memoir and directed by Michael Winterbottom, brings those dreadful weeks back with brutally vivid detail as a taut, meticulously crafted police procedural. Part thriller, part melodrama, “A Mighty Heart” recalls last year’s “United 93″ — in its technical prowess and artistry but also in its harrowing emotional arc, one that clearly aims to inspire viewers, though it may just as likely leave them feeling utterly wrung out.

Welcome to the new Cinema of Compulsive Reenactment, wherein excruciatingly painful recent events are rushed to the screen with breathless, almost fetishistic detail, and whose precise aims are subject to interpretation. Is this instant mythologizing a form of catharsis? Closure? Rank exploitation? Or a particularly American, impatient brand of revisionism, designed to create an immediately usable past?

In “A Mighty Heart,” Angelina Jolie is transformed and transforming as the woman whose journalist husband was murdered by terrorists in 2002. (By Peter Mountain — Paramount Vantage Via Associated Pr

These are the philosophical questions that haunt “A Mighty Heart,” and it answers with a degree of subtlety and sophistication that skeptics might find surprising. The film begins on Jan. 23, 2002, the day Danny was taken hostage and a day like any other for the Pearls, both working as journalists in Karachi. (He’s played in the film by Dan Futterman.) Danny is tracking down a lead to a possible connection between al-Qaeda and Richard Reid, the British “shoe bomber”; Mariane, a freelance journalist and six months pregnant, does some interviews, goes shopping for that night’s dinner and checks at regular intervals with Danny by cellphone.

By dinnertime, when he hasn’t come home, the first clouds of apprehension begin to gather. Awareness dawns slowly, then with a terrible, crushing certitude as Danny doesn’t pick up and Mariane makes the first call to the U.S. Embassy. Soon the house the Pearls have been sharing with fellow journalist Asra Nomani (Archie Panjabi), is filled with American diplomats, Karachi police and eventually the FBI, portrayed in one of the film’s few comic flourishes by an amusingly no-nonsense female agent played by Jillian Armenante.

Winterbottom, like his countryman Paul Greengrass (who directed “United 93″), has been experimenting with realism to terrific effect in recent years, with films such as “Welcome to Sarajevo,” “In This World” and “The Road to Guantanamo.” In “A Mighty Heart,” he brings all his talents to bear on a vivid, densely layered portrait, not just of one woman but of a city. With handheld cameras and a fearless sense of urgency and spontaneity, he plunges viewers into the neon-lit thrum and impossible beauty of Karachi (where some scenes were filmed), conveying not only its fascination for foreign correspondents like the Pearls but also the daunting, needle-in-a-haystack task of finding Danny in all that teeming humanity. Even amid the polyglot cacophony and chaos, “A Mighty Heart” skillfully threads viewers through a complicated skein of players, political agendas and dead ends in an investigation that ranges from al-Qaeda to Mossad to Pakistan’s political opponents in India.

Quite wisely, Winterbottom doesn’t get too caught up in the ticktock of Danny’s fatal journey, instead using brief flashbacks to speculate on how his abduction occurred. “A Mighty Heart” instead focuses on Mariane, played by Jolie in brown contact lenses and a diadem of black curls to resemble Mariane, who like Joan Didion in “The Year of Magical Thinking” reacts like any good journalist would to being ambushed by personal horror: She keeps her head, assumes control and takes notes. Like Didion, she’s one cool customer.

Jolie is a star of such super-stratospheric proportions that the chances of her disappearing into a character role would seem slim at best. But it turns out that she is the perfect choice to play Mariane, not only because she delivers a restrained, understated performance but because her persona as a citizen of the world — as a U.N. representative, activist and mother — so seamlessly meshes with the global consciousness that the Pearls represent. She blends just as seamlessly with “A Mighty Heart’s” fine ensemble of supporting actors, including Panjabi and Will Patton as U.S. consul Randall Bennett.(Mariane’s quietly appalled gaze as Bennett extols the virtues of Pakistan’s notorious interrogation methods is a moment of physical eloquence typical of Jolie’s astute, vanity-free performance.)

Mariane and Danny emerge in the film as two people at home no matter where they are on the planet, plunging headlong into the countries they’re covering. They’re not adrenalin junkies, as so many foreign correspondents are characterized, but connection junkies, reveling in vagrant moments of mutual comprehension. Of course, it was precisely comprehension that failed when Danny was murdered for being an American, a journalist and a Jew — a blow to his own ideals that makes the film’s agonizing denouement all the more shattering.

But Mariane refuses to put her husband’s murder in a context of American exceptionalism or even personal outrage; during one of her first television appearances, she notes that during Danny’s captivity several Pakistanis were victims of terror. One gets the idea that for Mariane, her fiercely held humanism isn’t a matter of sentiment but rather seasoned practicality: It’s about accuracy.

A central, even existential contradiction vexes “A Mighty Heart,” which is that one can deeply admire it as a piece of filmmaking and still harbor misgivings about why we need to have these stories packaged for the big screen. If that bigger question will never be easily resolved, “A Mighty Heart” still avoids its genre’s twin pitfalls of gratuitous masochism and cheap sentiment. “United 93,” for all its rigorous refusal to engage in reassuring theatrics, never quite transcended the former; as for “World Trade Center,” which also focused on the events of Sept. 11, 2001, its eagerness to impose redemptive meaning on that day resulted in a surfeit of the latter.

“A Mighty Heart” threads this needle with sober assurance, offering a clear-eyed retelling of Danny Pearl’s murder but finally, in focusing on Mariane’s response, delivering an affecting and, yes, redemptive lesson in moral comportment. Faced with unspeakable grief, Mariane doesn’t give in to xenophobia or selective indignation, but with her best self turns her loss into a plea for the cosmopolitanism she and her husband personified.

One can only hope that the nuance with which the filmmakers make this point won’t be lost on audiences more accustomed to the rhetoric — political and cinematic — of retribution. Ultimately, “A Mighty Heart” is an epic romance, at once doomed and full of hope, about two people in love with the world, even when it didn’t love them back.

…the movie was actually supposed to be about DANIEL PEARL, not ANGELINA JOLIE……..
——-
The movie is about Daniel Pearl’s wife looking for him. Angelina did a great job as Mariane.
What a silly thing to say the movie was about AJ. If it was about AJ she wouldn’t wear a wig and speak like Mariane. Think before you write!

Maybe that friend of Daniel’s is annoyed she wasn’t asked to be in the movie and/or her comments and suggestions were ignored. So what if she didn’t like AMH. Many people do!

JUST SAYIN @ 11/28/2007 at 12:09 am

seems Angelina has filming even in DEC.BTW I also think something is wrong with this interview,She told I`ve done ONE day and come back to finish it(this part seems she is talking about beowulf.I`m not sure.

“I’ve done one day, and I go back in December to finish…I have about a week and-a-half more to do,” she explained of “The Changeling,” a film that co-stars Angelina Jolie and John Malkovich. “I play a woman who befriends Angelina, when they’re both in this dire situation.”

Rather than a remake of the George C. Scott horror flick, Eastwood’s “Changeling” tells the story of a grieving mother (Jolie) whose kidnapped son is returned quite different than the way she remembers him. As her suspicion grows, the mother uncovers some dark secrets in the LAPD.

“I’m the one who guides her, and tells her how to survive,” Adams said of her role in the film, which has been shooting around L.A. for just over a month. “The meat and potatoes between Angelina and I are coming up. There are some good fight scenes between us.”

268 overrated : 11/27/2007 at 11:19 pm

>>>>>>>>>>

Uhmmmm, I’m not going too much time with you but here is some advice:

(a) reading and comprehension is not your strong suit. re-read the reviews in LA times, Washington Post and New York Times etc. and read the comments from Mariane, and remember, read the whole article, read in context.

(b) Who is Asra? Danny’s best friend? Really? Who said it? Asra herself? You know, Asra may claim that Danny was her best friend but I don’t think Asra can possibly claim that she was Danny’s best friend, see the difference?? (go back to point (a)). And if Mariane and Danny’s parents and family thought enough of the movie to want to see it made and liked it enough to approve of it, who I wonder is Asra to complain? I’ve always thought it was rather telling that Asra wrote, before she went to see the movie that she was afraid she would end up looking like the maid in the movie and how “relieved” she felt when she was merely depicted as a girl friday. She may have been joking but it made me wonder just how seriously insecure she really is.

(c) the film by the way, was about Mariane’s about Mariane’s and all the other people’s search for Danny when he went missing, it was to some extent about Mariane’s love for Danny. It was about Danny’s beliefs in good journalism, it was about Danny’s and Mariane’s shared beliefs (from Mariane’s perspective) of the good on this earth. AMH was not a film ABOUT Danny, but a film FOR Danny. A fine point for someone with reading and comprehension deficiencies. Now, Go back to point (a).

(Damn, I’ve wasted too much time on this idiot already.)

Her competition includes Sienna Miller (Interview), Ellen Page (Juno), Parker Posey (Broken English), and Tang Wei (Lust, Caution).

Other nominees included Cate Blanchett (I’m Not There), Don Cheadle (Talk to Me) and Philip Seymour Hoffman (The Savages).

Zach Braff and Lisa Kudrow, both past nominees of Spirit Awards (Braff won for 2004’s Garden State), announced this year’s nominees.

REVIEWS: “A Mighty Heart” on Angelina Jolies Performance aaclapping.gif

“Jolie blends in beautifully with a large cast. She sports a tricky accent worthy of Meryl Streep, but this is not even remotely a showy role. But few will forget her anguished cry of pain when the terrible truth that Daniel had been beheaded was broadcast over the Internet to the entire world. Beautifully, that same cry of pain is echoed a few minutes later, when Mariane is seen giving birth.
- Michael Giltz ,The Avvocate.com - May 22,2007

“Dramatically, it contains the most impressive performance of Angelina Jolie’s career. she is electric in the part.”
-James Christopher, The Times OnLine – May 24,2007

“Pitt’s partner Angelina Jolie won rave reviews for “A Mighty Heart”, in which she plays the widow of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, who was decapitated by Islamic extremists in Pakistan in 2002.”
– Deborah Cole, AFP About France 24-27/05/07

“Jolie’s portrayal of Pearl — who was six months pregnant when her husband was abducted — has been the subject of some controversy due to some mild cosmetic elements — her hair is curlier, her skin slightly darkened to convey the real Mariane Pearl’s Cuban-French heritage — but there’s nothing insensitive or overdone in the mild make-up artistry of the part; the inner performance is what shines out.
- James Rocchi,Cannes Review: A Mighty Heart - May 22nd 2007

“Jolie has a powerful scene in which she lets out a shriek of grief that will be recognized wherever people suffer from terror and loss.”
- By Ray Bennett ,The Hollywood Reporter - May 22, 2007

“Angelina Jolie’s portrayal of Mariane Pearl was very impressive.
I was moved by her performance an incredibly tear jerking and striking moment was Mariane’s reaction in the scene where she received the fateful news. Jolie’s characterization was so powerful and resonant it continued to linger in my mind long after the film’s end.”
- by: Jenny Karakaya, Joblo.com –

“In easily her finest performance, Jolie the pop-culture figure loses herself inside the role of Pearl.”
- Dave Mcoy,MSN Movies

“As Marianne,Angelina Jolie renders an admirably understated,Oscar-calibre performance.”
“she lets one of the most anguished shrieks you’re like to hear this year in American film.”
-EMANUEL LEVY- Film Review

If Angelina Jolie doesn’t win an award for her portrayal of Mariane Pearl in “A Mighty Heat,” I will be shocked.

The movie was emotionally draining, especially the part where she is told about Daniel’s death. Jolie’s reaction had many in tears and is probably the best performance of her career.
- SANDY TOMCHO , Times Herald Record -June 1,2007

“Angelina is fantastic as Mariane Pearl, transforming not just her physical appearance but her entire persona.”
-LEXI FEINBERG, Cinema Blend Review June 2,2007

A very beautiful woman who sees herself as the underdog becomes very famous. Because of her fame, she suffers. Because of her suffering, she becomes even more famous. Then she becomes virtuous. Very, very virtuous.

Women We Love

By Tom Junod

And so, yeah, what she wound up doing was crazy. Who but a crazy person decides to take care of a situation in her own backyard by expanding her sphere of influence from 39 hectares to 60,000, which comes to 230 square miles? Who but a crazy person looks up Stephan Bognar, a guy she read about in National Geographic because he was trying to save the animals in Baghdad’s zoo as well as the lions abandoned by Uday and Qusay, and hires him to run a conservation project involving the better part of northwest Cambodia, and then, when she figures out that it can’t work if it’s just a conservation project, goes to the big policy symposium in Davos so that she can meet economist Jeffrey Sachs and learn how to turn her conservation project into a self-sustaining Millennium Village, in accordance with UN development goals? Sachs has been working to create Millennium Villages in Africa, and there are about eighty of them. But Angelina Jolie doesn’t have a house in Africa. She has a house in Cambodia, so that’s where she — or, to be more precise, the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Project — puts her Millennium Village. It’s the first and only one in Asia, the first and only one outside Africa, and in its purview there are ten villages previously isolated from one another, about six thousand villagers and seventy-two employees — some of them poachers now employed as rangers — drawing their paychecks from Angie and Brad.

Okay: Even she uses the word crazy to describe what she’s wrought. Because one of the things a Millennium Village needs to stay within UN Millennium development goals is a school, so she built a school. But how are the kids going to get to the school? So she started building roads. But how are the kids going to get enough to eat once they get to the school? It’s not just a matter of feeding them out of one’s own largesse. It’s a matter of feeding them in such a way that they keep getting fed, long after one’s own largesse is withdrawn. So she built a soy-milk factory, which makes use of not only the local crop but also the largesse of the local farmers. And so, in the three months since milk from the microfactory started flowing, the number of students at the school increased from 699 to 810…and that’s just one aspect of the village. Four times a week, she’s in touch with Bognar, helping him manage the water-conservation projects and the soil-conservation projects and the biomass-for-fuel projects and everything else that she has so far been paying for out of her own pocket.

The house is still there, still on stilts, except that now it functions as the field headquarters for the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Project. And when she visits, Bognar says, “Angie roughs it. She lives with us in the forest and eats the crickets and cockroaches the locals eat without thinking twice about it. Whenever I read in magazines about her ‘glorious house in Cambodia,’ I think, What? It’s a shack. I don’t think people believe she has the ability to abandon everything in the West and transpose herself to a situation with malaria and dengue fever and the most extreme poverty. I read about her ‘Hollywood life.’ Well, you can’t live a Hollywood life in this part of Cambodia.”

And yet what kind of life does she lead, if not a Hollywood one? The way she makes it sound, she and Brad function like any other couple, even when — especially when — they’re in Cambodia. She likes to explore, and although they’ve had the place de-mined and installed night-vision cameras on their property, Brad worries. “Brad’s more — well, he doesn’t get angry with me. He just gets concerned. He’s much more — well, maybe he’s smarter about it. The attitude being, Let’s not just be walking around here, let’s be cautious in a healthy way. I’m brave to the point of stupidity sometimes. He’s asking if the property can be de-mined again.”

There are still elephants in their part of northwest Cambodia, and there are still elephants to the south of them, in an area protected by the organization WildAid, and so, Angelina says, “if we can get our section connected with their section, it will be the largest elephant migration in Asia. If we can get it so the animals feel safe, we hope to be sitting in the house when the elephants walk by.”

And so here’s a question. There can be few ambitions more meaningful than saving Asian elephants. Indeed, we’re talking about meaning on a grand, almost impossible scale: the largest elephant migration in Asia! The question is this: Does the meaning change when we realize that the people who get to watch the saved elephants migrate are Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie?

It would seem an impossible life to lead — a twisted double life indeed, suspended between extremes of meaning and meaninglessness — except for this: She says she doesn’t lead it. She says that the life that means the most to the American public means the least to her. “I don’t live two lives,” she says. “I have the great good fortune of being able to have a fun job. It’s a job that allows me to travel and that allows me, sometimes, to get out of myself. So that’s my job. But it’s not at all my life. Every day when I wake up in the morning, I’ve been studying international law. I try to make sure that each of my children has enough of my attention to feel equal. I try to make sure that my relationship with the man in my life is solid and complete and we’re very connected and having a great life together and enjoying our children and being part of the world. So that’s my life. It’s not split in half. It’s not one side taking over the other. I have no animosity toward Hollywood or the demands of the red carpet, all that silliness. That’s my job, and I’m happy to have it. But when I die, do I want to be remembered as an actress? No. I recently had an op-ed published in a newspaper. And at the end, it didn’t say I was an actress. It said that I was a UN goodwill ambassador — that’s all. And I was really proud. I said, ‘Hey, Brad, I’m not just an actress anymore.’ ”

Sure, reporters’ questions are constantly relayed to her, trying to confirm the latest rumors about her. “The phone rings every day. I say, ‘No, of course it’s not true,’ and hang up. We joke about it, because it’s usually when Brad and I are running after the kids and changing diapers. The fact is, we don’t do anything. We don’t go to parties. We hardly ever leave the house. We try to schedule time when we’re alone. Right now, Pax is sleeping in our bed. It’s kind of nice, him immediately knowing and feeling comfortable with us. Madd slept with me until Brad and I got together. They’re fun to sleep with. We have family sleep on Sundays. Everybody sleeps together. Some people have their lives together and then they have their children. Brad and I are starting with the children and are planning to have our time together in our later years.”

There are a few ways to look at this glimpse of domestic comfort. It might be the lie of someone leading a twisted double life. It might also be the fantasy existence of celebrities privileged enough to live out their daydream of normalcy. But then it might very well be true. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie may very well be just caring, tired parents who simply don’t care about celebrity and manage to live outside its apparatus — which would mean that the divide between their lives and the lives of the Americans reading tabloid stories about them is, on the one hand, very small and, on the other, nearly absolute.

Oops. Sorry, I posted this on the last Angie thread forgetting to check if we had a newer one. But, I wanted to drop in and recommend to anyone who hasn’t seen Beowulf at the IMAX to try and see it in that format. Truly cool!!!

I got back a little while ago from seeing the IMAX version of Beowulf. When I saw the Real 3D version last Saturday I thought it was a good movie, but I didn’t get why people thought it was awesome. Well…in IMAX it was totally awesome. And Angie on an IMAX screen. Holy cow!! People weren’t kidding when they said the theater goes silent when she comes out of the water. Does anyone know if Beowulf is only going to be around at the IMAX for 2 1/2 more weeks? The reason why I ask is because they showed a preview of I Am Legend with Will Smith and it said it would be in IMAX beginning on December 14th. I was thinking Beowulf should be around longer because there are still a lot of people who want to see it there. The theater was 3/4 full. Pretty good for a Tuesday night. And my co-worker, who saw it with me, said it was the perfect movie to see at the IMAX theater.

Also, wonderful news about the three nominations from the Independent Spirit Awards for Angie & AMH! Yayyyy!!!! Love that movie!! Can’t say it enough.

Hope everyone has a good evening. :-) :-)

Hello BAMPZSters, what a great day. Thank you everyone who took the time to post the reviews. It was good to read them again. Thanks for many good posts.

Jesse James Under Consideration?

Go to Variety.com this morning, and chances are you’ll be greeted by a full-page For Your Consideration ad on behalf of The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford. Which is interesting, considering that when the film premiered in September, Warner Brothers all but declined to promote it, spending the bare minimum on advertising and making it virtually impossible for non-coastal critics to write reviews. Whether it’s a last-ditch salvage job or it was part of the plan all along, maybe Warner Brothers understands that this is a film with limited mainstream appeal that nonetheless deserves a chance to play in the awards game?
Maybe, maybe not. For me, the overall takeaway from the ad (I took a screencap and pasted it above, just to make sure it wasn’t an early morning hallucination) is that the studio is still working against the movie’s strengths. Looking what they’re specifically flogging in the ad: Andrew Dominik for Best Adapted Screenplay, at the exclusion of Roger Deakins for Cinematography, which should be a lock? Sounds like a contractual obligation. Maybe more egregiously, the ad has room for the names of five producers, but no push for Casey Affleck as Best Supporting Actor?

I know, I know––gift horse, mouth, blah blah blah. Tell me why I’m wrong in the comments.

Julia Roberts may not be a fan of Angelina Jolie but the Spirit Award’s certainly are, with the actress scoring a nod on Tuesday for her role in A Mighty Heart.

“She could make any film she wants,” Dawn Hudson of Film Independent said after the announcement. “It’s a feat for such a movie star to be so much in that role.”

The flick – which was co-produced by Brad Pitt – sees the 32-year-old play the wife of murdered American journalist Daniel Pearl.

Whispers claim the actress/humanitarian could score her second Academy Award following her first golden gong for best supporting role in the feisty film Girl Interrupted.

Jolie’s competition includes Sienna Miller (Interview), Ellen Page (Juno), Parker Posey (Broken English), and Tang Wei (Lust, Caution).

Hollywood hunk Brad Pitt has disappointed female fans worldwide by vowing never to do another nude scene.

The sexy star said he didn’t want his children to see him naked on the big screen.

The actor, who adopted lover Angelina Jolie’s kids Pax, Maddox and Zahara before she gave birth to their daughter Shiloh, said he would only make movies his family can watch. “I certainly don’t want to be embarrassed when my kids get old enough to see my films. “I can’t see any more nude scenes or **** jokes,” he said.

And he dropped another bombshell when he admitted that he did not think he would be acting for much longer - and there would be no more Ocean’s Eleven films. He said: “There’s no more. I think we all need to put away childish things. “We’ll find something else. “I just don’t think there’s anywhere to go with that particular story, if someone comes up with an idea we would.”

The star of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, which he co-produced with Ridley Scott, said: “I figure I’ve got very few films left. “Who knows how many I’ll get to do now so I want to do something I’m interested in otherwise I don’t want to bother. “I think it’s a younger person’s game. I like being on the other side. I like producing a lot,” he said on BBC1’s Film 2007 with Jonathan Ross.

The Hollywood heavyweight made his debut as a producer on The Departed, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. He plays Jesse James in the new film, which also star his fellow Ocean’s Eleven actor Casey Affleck as Robert Ford. “Casey did an amazing job with it. Their relationship is the crux of the film. It’s the crux of the book. “What is it about these two guys? Why would they be stuck together that last year when one would end up killing the other and in doing so would actually lead to his own death?

“What I’m saying is they are both complicit in their own deaths and we thought that was an interesting idea to dissect,” he said. And he hit back at critics who said the film was too long. “There has been some complaints about length,” he said. “Me, I really liked the film. It has a meditative quality. I think it’s absolutely lyrical.”

Pitt spoke of his love of producing and working with new filmmakers. He said story was the most important key to approaching new projects as a producer. “It’s always story and storyteller. Who is telling that story and what is that story and can we get stories to the table that might not get there otherwise? “Do we need us to help shepherd them? Are there filmmakers we would like to support?” he said.

Working with Thelma and Louise producer Ridley Scott again was a dream for Pitt. He said: “It’s so cool. I’ll always be indebted to Ridley as he gave me my opening into the big leagues as they call it.”

Pitt showed his cheeky side with a nod to his gay fans when Jonathan Ross teased him about his sexy Ocean’s Eleven co-stars George Clooney and Matt Damon. Ross started his question: “Speaking as a straight man who can appreciate male beautyâ¦” before Pitt interrupted: “I can’t speak as a straight man.”

No in your mind you want him to sound depressed and miserble. In your mind you want him to be unhappy. Brad sounds any normal decent father of four kids. At some point the nudity has to stop and he is basically saying he does not want to embarass his kids by doing certain roles.

Asri was not Mariane’s ‘best friend’; Mariane met her through Daniel and they may have bonded during the search and after Daniel’s death, but they were not best friends.

Sometimes those outlandish Internet rumors are true. During the holiday weekend, Ain’t It Cool News (aka “geek central”) reported that Christian Bale had agreed to play a grown-up John Connor in the fourth installment of the “Terminator” franchise. “Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins” (what a title) is currently in preproduction at Warner Bros. and under the eye of not-so-visionary director McG for a summer 2009 release. Not surprisingly, many just brushed the report aside as another fan-boy daydream. Bale is obviously set financially with Chris Nolan’s “Batman” series, and why would an actor who spent weeks in the jungles of Thailand with acclaimed filmmaker Werner Herzog want to work with a director whose career achievement is “Charlie’s Angels”? And considering how much time “Batman Begins” and “The Dark Knight” have taken out of his schedule (the “Knight” shoot took more than six months), why would he commit to what is expected to be the first of three new “Terminator” movies? Those questions have yet to be answered, but on a hunch, I contacted someone close to the production who, much to my surprise, confirmed Bale is in serious talks for the role but hasn’t yet signed on the dotted line.

What is known about the latest “Terminator” is that the story line will find Connor (previously played by Edward Furlong in “Terminator 2″ and Nick Stahl in “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines”) battling a world overrun by Skynet in the not-so-distant future. The chances of the original Terminator, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, appearing for a cameo are slim. Although Warner Bros. is involved in both the new movie and the new FOX series “The Sarah Connor Chronicles,” it’s unclear whether the story lines will reflect one another.

Bale received stellar reviews this fall for his role in James Mangold’s “3:10 to Yuma” and can currently be seen playing one of six Bob Dylans in Todd Haynes’ intriguing “I’m Not There.” “The Dark Knight” arrives in theaters July 18.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO CHRISTIAN BALE DOING TERMINATOR?? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Mr. Bale you just broke my heart :(

Congrats to you Angie for your nomination. Love you

morning bampzs

Good morning, BAMPZS fans!

WTH was this?

Julia Roberts may not be a fan of Angelina Jolie but the Spirit Award’s certainly are, with the actress scoring a nod on Tuesday for her role in A Mighty Heart.

Who gives a hoot what that big-mouthed horseface thinks? She might be America’s Sweetheart (literally, having been the sweetheart of Liam Neeson, Dermot Mulroney, Dylan McDermott, Kiefer Sutherland, Jason Patric, Benjamin Bratt, etc etc etc) once, but now she is also riding on AJ’s coattails? What, so now that she is a “happily married mother of three” she is now a respectable woman able to cast stones on another who has gone on the same path she once trod?

I am just ranting because this is about the third or fourth time that Julia Roberts’ name has been attached to AJ. I actually thought Julia would be the last to cast stones, since she was a proven homewrecker, having an affair with a very married Danny Moder during the filming of The Mexican while she was still with Benjamin Bratt. How come that has never ever affected her standing in the eyes of the MiniVan Majority?

briseis,i totally agree with you,at first i thought it was made up,but now am begining to believe she said something, she is in the same league with okra,as for julia she is just jealous

LMAO!!! How desperate can some people be. Brad has said these things since ages ago.

He has said that now that he has kids he will choose the projects he is working on more carefully and it would be something that really interests him and wants to do. He is not going to spend his time on things he doesn’t believe in anymore. He is not doing his first steps. That is pretty logical for a family man who wants to spend as much time with his family as he can. He’s not going to waste his time on silliness.

Angie has said the same too.

There will be no more Oceans films and that is what the whole cast and the director has said since O13 came out. As Brad said there is nowhere to go with the story line unless there is a brand new idea then they’ll consider it.

And for the AOJJ he said particularly the same things he had already said in all of his previous interviews promoting the film.

And he has said many times how much he loves producing because he has the chance to bring the projects he is really interested in to light.

Nothing depressing and nothing wrong. Just a lovely man who has matured so obviously and he makes his family the priority of his life.

BTW- He never said that he will stop acting when he was with the X. That would mean that he would spend more time with her .Something he didn’t want to after some time. LOL!!

He simply said that he was watching himself doing the same steps again and again and choosing projects that he didn’t believed in and give some uninspired performances. Did he say anything like that now?? NO!!!

But since when you trolls knew your facts to make sense now?? LOL!!

Thanks for the article anyway!!

Good morning fans!!

Very, very OT…

With that said, Christian Bale is all kinds of fine. Typically, I prefer men with nice lips like Brad, Jude Law, Vince Vaughn (yeah, I know), but Bale is a major exception.

I recently saw him in The Prestige and d@mn… there is something about him, which is why I still haven’t watched American Psycho. The last thing the world needs is a bat$h*t crazy woman who would overlook murderous tendencies just because it’s housed in an attractive package.

piper, have you seen him lately?sorry but it seems he got botox or some plastic surgery,he is not looking his best,he is not bad though

Hey tp, I completely agree with Your post plus..

I was thinking about Brad and the nude* scenes that He won’t be doing anymore.. It seems that He doesn’t want to do any more sex scenes with another Girl on screen.. And that is very different from the X years> Where He did them UP!! lol…
cheers tp..

Have a great Day BAMPZS Fans..

What did JR exately say?? British newspapers are making a big deal out of it! I heard she had an affair with a married man so whats the f big deal julia?! Celebs should think first before trashing their fellow celebs!

I don’t think She can really say that about Angie because she lost her power in Hollywood. Don’t forget Star Magazine one of the big liar magazines.

Thanks for article,Brad was so sweet in it.The way he talked just show, what a solid couple they are.whenever they had interview they talk in the same way.they just admit each other, and this just show they talk about everything and they decide about everything according to each other`s opinion.wow he really left that childish side and he becomes MAN.I really enjoy him now.he becomes one kind of man that every single woman wishes for him.Lucky Angie.and he told the same about n*de scene while he was working on BB and he didn`t do those kind of scene with CB.seems he makes his family his number 1 priority.although I will miss him in big screen but we should respect his opinion.

So it seems that Ellen Page (Juno) took home another breakthrough actress award at last night Gotham Awards. Will make for an exciting awards season for sure.

(Too cute!!!)

E-Poll Market Research, a leading authority in celebrity and brand research, conducted a nationwide survey among 1,107 kids 2-17 to explore today’s attitudes about nice, naughty, and the age old question of who makes Santa’s list. This is what kids had to say in their own words:

Who topped Santa’s “Nice List?” Hannah Montana was overwhelmingly deemed the “nicest” celebrity among kids 2-12. Teenagers 13-17 thought actress and UN Goodwill Ambassador, Angelina Jolie, was the “nicest” celebrity in 2007.

It is more than 2 weeks we didn`t see Brad and about two weeks wwe didn`t see Angie.and god Z and Shi more than one month.I really miss them.

I cant believe the British woman who let her students name a bear Mohammad has been charged. It’s not fair, it was an innocent mistake! After all 18/23 said the bear should be named mohamad!

Just like I don’t believe or read tabloids articles on Brad and Angie, I don’t believe this story about Britney. Is it In touch again? They seem to have a flair for the dramatic. I need some hard, physical, irrefutable evidence, until then..not buying it.

BS is pregnant again???

So it seems that Ellen Page (Juno) took home another breakthrough actress award at last night Gotham Awards. Will make for an exciting awards season for sure.
=================================
This is interesting because the group behind the Gotham awards - the Independent Feature Project (IFP) - can also vote for the Independent Spirit Awards. Of course, the IFP is even more “alternative” than the Spirit Awards are. As for Oscar, Juno the film and Page’s character are not very Academy friendly. Besides that I’m not so sure that many Academy voters will bother to see the movie.

I agree. It is going to be exciting and I hope full of surprises.

358,thanks for the article

363 groundcontrol : 11/28/2007 at 11:09 am

Hi. Oh I didn’t know all that about the Gothams. Feel more informed now, thank you.
It’s interesting that you say that about the Ellen Page’s character and the overall tone of Juno. There has been some talk and a push from Fox(?) for Laura Linney for her role in the movie the Savages for Oscar consideration. My understanding is that the movie is also a comedy/drama much like Juno is. So I wonder if the Academy will be receptive to this as well?

Me too i’d say Angelina is the nicest celebrity of 2007 :D a lot of reasons to back up my sentence :)

Ross started his question: “Speaking as a straight man who can appreciate male beautyâ¦” before Pitt interrupted: “I can’t speak as a straight man.”

I can`t understand this part,what does it mean??thanks.

ROBERTS TAKES SWIPE AT JOLIE
Julia Roberts has got her claws for Angelina Jolie over the ways she hooked up with Brad Pitt. Robarts’ husband Danny Moder worked on MAMS, where Jolie and Pitt met. He told his wife 40, that Jolie made a play for Pitt on the set. Julia said Angelina has no shame,’ a source claimed.

Sorry for bringing this sh*t here!

Britney Spears has not done it again.

In a text message to Ryan Seacrest’s KIIS-FM radio show in L.A. Wednesday, her pal Sam Lutfi debunked In Touch’s new cover story that declares Spears, 25, is expecting a baby with her ex J.R. Rotem.

“It’s BS,” he said. “Don’t know who made it up. J.R. doesn’t even know what’s up. It’s fake. Completely fake.”

On its new cover, In Touch featured a shot of Spears under the headline: “Yes, She’s Pregnant!” The story quoted Rotem as saying, “It’s true.”

Stay tuned!
