High School Musical’s Vanessa Hudgens laments on fame

IF there is one lesson Vanessa Anne Hudgens has learnt in her short time in Hollywood, it’s that fame isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Even at 18, the star of Disney’s smash hit made-for-TV musicals, High School Musical and its sequel High School Musical 2, is wise enough to know Hollywood has a way of chewing up celebrities.

“It is a dog-eat-dog world,” the singer, who first came to prominence in the Thunderbirds movie, says. “People want to know about people’s business; no one really has a sense of privacy because everyone is trying to get into your business.

“And people become jaded and infatuated with Hollywood. I think it happens to a lot of celebrities and it messes with their head.”

While some actually like the extra attention, Hudgens says it’s not really for her.

“I don’t like people staring at me all the time and I don’t want people following me around,” she says.

“I became an actress and started singing and dancing because I truly loved it. I did not want to be a celebrity; I did it because I genuinely enjoy doing it. I think fame is just something that comes along when you are in something that is such a success.

“Fame is an interesting thing but my fans are very supportive and I thank them so much.”

Hudgens’s comments come as the star tries her best to win back fans after she was embroiled in a scandal earlier in the year, in which a photo of Hudgens posing nude was leaked to the internet.

Shortly after the scandal broke, Hudgens broke up with fellow HSM 2 star Zac Efron.

Maybe that’s the price of fame.

Still, there is no doubting the success of the HSM franchise. The premiere of HSM 2 was watched by 17.2 million viewers in the US, making it the highest-rating cable show of all time.

When the Kenny Ortega-directed telemovie premiered in Australia in September on Disney Channel Australia, it attracted 313,976 pairs of eyes, making it the highest-rated children’s program to ever air on pay-TV here.

Disney Channel Worldwide enterainment president, Gary Marsh says the HSM phenomenon “touched people in ways that made them want to embrace it as part of their lives”.

“Maybe the world is so filled with fear right now that people were ready for an uplifting, magical experience,” he says.

Doubtless, Seven will be hoping for big numbers when it airs for the first time on free-to-air TV this week.

Reprising their singing and dancing roles for the sequel are Efron as star athlete Troy Bolton, Hudgens as brainy transfer student Gabriella Montez, Ashley Tisdale as drama club diva Sharpay Evans, Lucas Grabeel as her brother and on-stage partner Ryan Evans, Corbin Bleu as teammate and best friend Chad Danforth and Monique Coleman as academic decathlete Taylor McKessie.

With junior year over, the East High Wildcats are ready to relax, so long as they can get decent summer jobs. Troy thinks he has landed a dream job at posh country club, Lava Springs. But it’s actually Sharpay’s plot to lure him away from Gabriella.

Asked what sort of high school student she was, Hudgens says she mostly received good grades but would “always end up getting in trouble for the most stupid things, like chewing gum”.

Interestingly, her HSM gig almost never happened. A young Hudgens was all set to audition for American Idol.

“I love singing and I thought that to get a chance to do it (American Idol) would have been amazing,” she says. “The only way I thought that I would be able to get myself out there would be on American Idol. But I was 15 at the time when I said that I wanted to do it and you had to be 16 to audition.

“So I thought, ‘One more year’. Then, when I turned 16, High School Musical came along and I got to do it. So I thought I’d skip on American Idol.”

I hope some of her critic will realize that all she want in the business is to showcase her talent and be acknowledge with it will really mean something to her.

And the break up rumor is so old news, not even true anyway.

I think I watched it every time it was on in that first week!

I have it on my computer (needed it to make my videos) but I was going to watch it again. I can’t wait till Wednesday either, but I’m going to be doubling up because my parents already ordered me the 3-Disc Collector’s Edition (with both Movies and the Concert) for Christmas. Oh well, you can never have too many copies I say, more to lend out to people so they can become fans too!
