Matthew Perry will play a grown-up version of Zac Efron in the upcoming teen comedy 17, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
17 will be directed by Burr Steers and produced by Hairspray’s Adam Shankman and Jennifer Gibgot. Leslie Mann will play Perry’s wife, reportedly named Scarlett.
The film follows a middle-age father who wakes up to find he’s 17 again. In order to be close to his children, he enrolls in the same school as them.
Production begins early December 2007. That’s next month!

#22 Well to be accurate “Seventeen” is actually the reverse of “13 Going on 13″ (an adult going becoming a teenager again as opposed to a teenager or preteen magically becoming an adult)which was the female version of “Big.” But still I get your point this hardly a new concept, its all in the execution and I hope its good. As far as any resemblence between Matthew Perry and Zac goes, I don’t see it either.

Of course there’s no resemblance. Quite frankly I don’t think there is anyone hot enough to play an older version of Zac!!!! But Matthew Perry seems like a good comedic choice, combined with Leslie Mann I’m definitely even more excited for this movie if that’s at all possible!!!

I think it’s a good choice. He’ll be good at comedy. Part of the point is that the older actor has changed over time. The main differences are Zac’s forehead is shorter, and his eyes are at a different angle, mouth is wider. The have similar cheekbone structure, and chin. It may depend on the camera angles as to how much they look alike, and makeup. You know Zac’s gonna have bangs.
I think they are assembling a good cast. The older actors will bring in a slightly older crowd which will broaden Zac’s appeal.

It’s a similar jacket. In another pic, they’re actually the same color. makes you wonder if when they bought it, did they buy it at the same day? Seems like Van’s wearing the women’s version and Zac’s wearing the men’s version. *shrug* who knows. They seem to have alot of pair items.

#17 No need to fret over poor Matthew Perry. Have you heard…he’s an enormous talent and success. Are you old enough to remember FRIENDS and scores of movies he has starred in? Zac could thank his lucky stars for HS and this opportunity to act alongside such a talent in Matthew Perry. Hopefully Efron will break away from the Disney kiddie-stuff if he is going to have an acting career as an adult.
Loved him in HAIRSPRAY and anxious for SEVENTEEN. As for HSM#3, I’m sure he’ll be great but to me it’s overkill and boring. Good for young children though. Gonna pass on paying money to see that.

#55 n.o.l.a - Actually there have been quite a few movies that have done this concept…if you really think about it. There have been the movies where parent and child switch bodies (”Like Father Like Son” - Dudley and Kirk, “Freaky Friday” - Jamie Lee & Lindsey, Barbara & Jodie - the original “Freaky Friday” from the 70’s, “Big” with Tom Hanks, “13 going on 30″ - Jennifer Gardner and probably a few others I don’t know.)
Hollywood likes to recycle movies. There are generations who haven’t seen some of the previous films and they are trying to appeal to them as well as those of us that have seen them all. It’s all about entertainment.
Personally I love a good comedy, so if it’s good…I don’t care if the concept is new. Matthew is hilarious and Zac can be as well. I can’t wait to see how it’s all put together.

Yeah I agree. You really can’t predict anything until the movie comes out and you see the finish product.
OT, but went to watch movie last night. ‘The Hitman’. The movie wasn’t that good, and the fights weren’t overblown and super savvy, but for some strange reason…I liked it. Gah, I thought the guy was super hot and sexy. And the way he walks…hahaha, reminded me soo much of the game. I felt like I was watching the CG’s for the game instead.

As has been said, you cannot know how a movie will turn out until the finish product. It’s the same in reverse, some movie that everyone thinks is going to be great and then by the time it is done it is ruined and disappointing. Plus, it is amazing what can be done to get actors to resemble each other. Body movements or phrasing goes a long way in making a connection between 2 people also. Everyone said that a young Albert Finney looked just like Ewan McGregor looks now so they cast Finney and McGregor together in Big Fish. I never saw one thing in that movie where one looked like the other but, you know what?, it didn’t matter. The movie still worked for me because Finney’s character was so much older than when he was McGregor’s age in the movie.

I am one who will also go see this movie just because Zac is in it. That is actually why I saw Hairspray. I remember Queen Latifa saying how amazing it was the number of people who came out to see the movie just because of Zac and she said “chicks just love this kid”. I don’t think Zac will have to wait a really long time before someone comes up with a really good role for him because the big studios will soon see dollar signs with him. He is a magnet, that’s for sure.

They are filming at a high school in Santa Monica. Some students there talked to Zac yesterday…..they must be rehearsing or blocking scenes or whatever.
Thank you all. I DO feel better today. I can actually breathe and it is always good to be able to do that! LOL I really have some laryngitis today though. I got in the car to go to one of my jobs, put in Vanessa’s CD and started to sing and suddenly realized there was only very few sounds coming out. I thought “Well, that can’t be good…” But it is better now but I think I will stay away from the singing—Vanessa does it better anyway.
Thanks about the tree, I had posted on the Vanessa thread how the one thing that bothers me about not putting up my tree is I have these wonder ornaments and a lot of them are angels. Well, too bad I can’t find a really good new angel ornament that would inspire me to tear up the house and put up my tree. LOL

i don’t see why its so important that they look a lot alike. i’m not sure if zacs hair was colored or not, but i don’t think they have to have a strong resemblance for the father/son thing to be believable. many kids don’t have a striking resemblance to their parents. besides, in “Big” i don’t recall any scenes where the kid and adult were together? so it’s not like there will be a great deal of shared screen time between the two.
and even though this movie does not have an “original” concept, doesn’t mean it can’t be good. the director is supposed to be very good, and if the script is good then it has a good chance of being a good movie. zac looks great in the people mag pic. there are more of them here:

Funny isn’t it how so many people believe that if they haven’t seen a recent picture of Zac and Vanessa together it means they haven’t see each other? I guess they think the paps should stand guard 24/7(and it seems like they do enough of that anyway) and get some picture everyday to prove they have been together in the course of that day so people can BELIEVE. Oh, what little faith! LOL Don’t know what these people are going to do if Vanessa gets her own car it may mean there will be less opportunities for the paps to get their picture together. LOL

When I see matthew Perry I totally think of Chandler!! He may only have a small part in the movie, but he is a familiar name to obtain more credit to the film and he is funny. It should be a cool movie to see.
I noticed though, it isn’t slated to come out until ‘09. So HSM3 would come out first if the info is correct.

Hey ZAs…I think they made a great comedic choice here and I am quite excited for this movie. As others have stated, new concept or not, it’s all about the execution. The fact is, though this concept has been used in a variety of ways over the years, it seems to be something the public really enjoys and it’s a formula that works well for the studios. I don’t know…who hasn’t pondered what they’d do differently if they could go back to a certain time (or what it would be like to see your future self)? It’s a very human concept.
On a Z-related note, has anyone seen this? Not sure about the write up but look who is at #1.

I’m so excited about this movie; if Zac got dark hair I think this could work well for Mathew and Zac resemblance. It really seems to me that it’s going to be a really good movie; I really like “13 going to 30″.
And I’m definitely going to see this one in the big screen because of Zac, which was the major reason of me going to watch Hairspray. I hope that Vanessa can get a new role too, a comedy or a drama, I don’t care, just want to see them flying a little away from Disney, it’s not that I don’t love HSM and that I’m not waiting for the last one, but after finishing with this I wish their careers can go to other parts too.
