Yes, a really smart woman. Has no one else had a problem with the fact that this “smart” woman thrust her adopted children into the worldwide media so much that her daughter now has to live with the fact that the whole world knows she was conceived through violence, rape actually. No one looks at that though. If she would have protected her children like most parents in the world, not just Hollywood parents, this would have never happened. How is this “smart” woman going to explain that to poor Zahara. Oh….millions of dollars in therapy I’m sure because neither one of those idiots has a brain in their head. Or and unselfish bone in their body. They are children, not props, not dolls, not publicity pawns.

I feel bad for Zahara and I truly think what those two did and do publicity-wise with their children is disgusting. Notice since the revelation about Zahara, we haven’t really seen them. Is that what it took - this humiliating publicity for the child to realize that maybe they are pushing it a bit? Hopefully by the time Zahara is old enough to really understand, people will have forgotten and the press on it will be long archived. But this 2 year old’s private, private information was splashed on the conver of many, many magazines. Everyone is so protective over their personal info. Who protected Zahara? Certainly not her “smart” mommy.

“I’m Angie.” This is how Angelina Jolie — a woman who needs no introduction — introduces herself. Jolie is many things: a humanitarian who has been a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations since 2001, a doting mother to four young children. And she’s an actor — an amazing one at that.

If people forget that last part, it might be because Jolie is also a tabloid staple, through no fault of her own. She has never been one to seek out the spotlight, and yet we understand the world’s fascination with her: From the moment she stepped on screen, it’s been clear there is something powerfully magnetic about Jolie.

Though she was born into an acting family — her parents are Marcheline Bertrand, who died earlier this year, and Jon Voight — and has been in the business since she was a teenager, it was Jolie’s roles in two cable biopics that made the world take notice. First was George Wallace, in which she played the wife of the controversial Alabama governor. But it was Gia, in which she devoured the screen as fierce and needy supermodel Gia Carangi, that made Hollywood pay attention. She won back-to-back Golden Globe Awards for her work in the films and established herself as one of the most exciting young actors to watch. She then earned a third Golden Globe — for Girl, Interrupted, in which she stole the spotlight from Winona Ryder and ended up with an Oscar for it.

The following years would prove to be a mixed bag of commercial blockbusters (Gone in 60 Seconds, Tomb Raider), ambitious failures (Beyond Borders, Alexander), and critical savaging (Original Sin), but Jolie was always captivating. In 2005 she scored her biggest hit with Mr. & Mrs. Smith, an action-comedy that tapped into the actor’s smoldering sexuality, charisma, and sense of humor. She can currently be seen (in animated form) in another blockbuster, Beowulf. This year she wowed even her biggest fans with a gut-wrenching turn as Mariane Pearl, wife of slain journalist Daniel Pearl, in A Mighty Heart. Directed by Michael Winterbottom in a stark, almost documentary style, the film details Mariane’s ordeal from Daniel’s kidnapping to the birth of their child, Adam. It’s a project close to Jolie’s heart.

Back Stage: Growing up the daughter of actors, was it a forgone conclusion you’d enter the business?

Angelina Jolie: It might have been the opposite. In some ways it was good, because I remember being very conscious of how human and regular actors were; even though my dad was a successful actor, he was very much a regular person. I suppose the one good thing about being raised in it is that you don’t have the illusion of actors being magic or special. You have a real sense that it’s just work.

Back Stage: What led you to attend the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute at 16?

Jolie: My mom studied with Lee Strasberg before he passed, and she loved him, so she wanted me to go there. I trained there a little bit, and they put on plays. It was fun. I’m not great at theatre; I think certain people are great at it, and I don’t think I have the talent that other people have when it comes to being on stage.

Back Stage: Do you still study acting or work with coaches?

Jolie: I used to work with my mom. She was the most amazing support for an actor. She used to write letters to my characters. For Girl, Interrupted, she bought me the hand puppet that I ended up using. If I’d do a sexy role, she’d buy me perfume. She always read the script, made a bunch of notes, and wrote these letters. She was a great person to talk to about things, and she loved the process so much. So now I suppose I try to hear her voice in my head.

Back Stage: In your Oscar acceptance speech, you thanked your mother for giving up her dream of becoming an actor. Could you ever leave acting behind?

Jolie: Oh, absolutely. I’ve been really, really lucky to have a career as an artist where I’ve been able to have the roles where I’ve expressed a lot and been able to play all different types of women. And I think a lot of actors still feel there’s a lot inside them that they want to communicate or something they have yet to discover. And I don’t feel that as much now as I did when I was younger. I feel like there’s a lot to discover about myself as an adult and as a mother but not as much as an actor. There aren’t those roles where I feel I’m the one who needs to do it. I start to read things now, and I think, “Somebody else would be better at this.” Oftentimes I’ll get a call, and they’ll say, “This other person would really like to do this role.” And I’m the first to say, “Well, then they should.” Because if they really want to, then that’s who should do it.

Back Stage: Do you ever have to audition anymore?

Jolie: Not really, but for Good Shepherd I had to meet with Bob [De Niro], and we looked at the scenes and read it and talked about it. Because I think he wasn’t convinced I could play somebody light, a debutante. And that’s why I wanted to do it. He didn’t know me and wanted to meet me and see if I could do it. But I liked it; I don’t necessarily want the roles that you’d assume I could do. I think, like most actors, you want the roles that they’re not sure you can do.

Back Stage: Are you someone who has always auditioned well?

Jolie: No. I think I was starting to audition around 16, 17, and would be going out for the girlfriend or the girl in high school. And I was just never that girl. I was always told that I was too dark. I went through a period, years ago, when I was told I was too ethnic. Isn’t that strange? Now I’m not ethnic enough on occasion. But there wasn’t something regular enough about me; it just didn’t fit. I went on a hundred auditions; my mom and I actually checked off the hundredth. I think my first job was as a crank addict in a film, and then my second job was, like, a cyborg. So it was clear that my career was going to be full of very bizarre, strange women — which ended up being the ones I liked anyway.

Back Stage: What was your worst audition?

Jolie: I had a really bad one for Wallace, a film I actually ended up getting. It was so bad, in fact, my manager [Geyer Kosinski] had to calm both me and [director] John Frankenheimer down. I read the character was sexy, so I went in and put on bright red lipstick and a black dress. It was a period piece, in the ’60s. Now, I don’t have big issues talking about my father, but I was trying to find myself. I walked in, and I was nervous, and I did my reading, and the first thing John Frankenheimer said was, “So, Jon’s your father.” And my heart just sank, and I thought, “He didn’t pay attention to anything I just did.” He said, “How’s he doing? What’s he up to these days?” I don’t know what it was, but I just got somewhat rude in return. I said, “I really don’t know; why don’t you call him? I have to go.” And I got a call from Geyer, saying, “You stormed out, and you were dressed like a geisha girl!” I said, “He was rude, and he didn’t pay attention to what I was saying. He didn’t even care about me as an individual.” He said, “Please go back.” I said, “I’m not getting in a room with him.” But he calmed us both down and said, “Don’t wear red lipstick, and try to go in with a better attitude.” Strangely enough, Frankenheimer and I ended up becoming best friends. We loved working together. He’s just a straightforward person who doesn’t mean to be rude, and I was overly sensitive. But yeah, we definitely went head to head when we first met.

Back Stage: After you shot Gia, which would prove to be a breakout role for you, you made the choice to stop acting for a while. Why?

Jolie: I didn’t feel I had anything else in me at the moment. I shaved my head at the end of it — there were pockets of hair we shaved for the dying scene. By the end of it, I had to actually shave my head. I separated from my husband [Jonny Lee Miller] at the end of that. And I signed up for screenwriting and directing at NYU, and I moved to New York and didn’t know anybody and went to school.

Back Stage: What brought you back?

Jolie: I started to get acknowledged for Wallace and Gia, and it became uncomfortable to go on the subway and go to school. It just got weird. But it was a really great time, and it was important for me to step back and re-evaluate and get out from in front of the camera for some time.

Back Stage: Is it true you don’t have a publicist?

Jolie: It is. I don’t have an agent either. I have one manager, and I’ve had him for 10 years. He started as an agent years ago, but he’s been a manager almost as long as I’ve been with him. I tried to have an agent for a few months. And I tried to have a publicist for two days. And neither worked out. I’m very specific about what I like to do, and I’ve been very fortunate that through working it out myself, I can somehow manage something. I’m sure that some people would disagree that I can’t handle publicity properly, but I tend to ignore it.

Back Stage: What was the process of doing performance capture for Beowulf like?

Jolie: I think a big misconception about those films is people think you just loan your voice. You have days of the camera mapping every body part and 80 different facial expressions. After you’ve done your mapping, you get in these jumpsuits and you go in with your other actors, and you’re in this big box, and it’s like you’re doing theatre. So you do everything physically you would do. There are over 300 cameras at every angle, and it’s a performance piece. They even have new things that go on your temple so it reads your eyeball movements. Everything is exact.

Bringing this from the previous thread. I did not know that the writers at the National Ledger are not paid. Considering how they always cite Outtatouch, or Lies&Steals, I am sure those people work for those tabs. Thank you all….first off - a correction…

National Ledger writers are unpaid, which makes the hacks currently writing nastily about Angelina on that website even more puzzling as that means they are evil c*nts to Angie, for FREE.

The main reason I signed up over there, is to correct the bullsh*t that may be out there and to add a different flavor to the mix. For instance, today they had a piece on the highest paid actresses in HW article - well, that was good news all around for AJ fans right?

Not so at the ledger — one of their celeb contributors ripped into AJ and turned this very positive article about her success on it’s ear. It’s that kind of nastiness that I relayed to ‘the Ledger powers that be,’ over there, that made millions of fans swear to never click on them EVER.

I made my displeasure known - but this time I decided to proactively do something about it.

I could correct the record, I could write the same great stories that we have talked about, and heard about regarding the JPs over the last couple years. Then with NL’s help, I could post the wonderful news, and use their relationship to search engines to get this positive, loving and ‘good news,’ OUT THERE!!

…and afterall, this being the start of ‘Award season,’ we’ll be getting even more terrific news, but I also suspect we’ll also get the bullsh*t lies, slander and slurs too unfortunately.

THIS, is where we can immediately correct the record, and frankly KICK ASS my friends.

I will be writing positive JP stories, and correcting the record when needed (I wish I had had this gig when the ‘ass tear’ made the rounds ) - NL will give us a format and an immediate ‘in’ with search engines EVERYWHERE - hopefully we’ll be posted a LOT(I say ‘we’ because I can’t do it without the fans here, at JJ’s and at all the JP sites everywhere) - pass the link along…send me suggestions for stories - or tell me what needs immediate attention and I’ll try and write about it when I can.

One version has the 38-year old actress “loney and depressed” during the filming in the rainy Northwest, and another version has the producer of the flick Wyck Godfrey telling the media that Jen was a ball of fun who, at night, couldn’t pull herself away from the Silverado Bowling Alley, and eating at restaurants Ding Ho, Matzatlan and Mexico City. So what’s the truth?

Celebrity Babylon got in contact EXCLUSIVELY with a source on the movie set who had blogged on our site regarding a Jen Aniston gossip item we posted, that source got us in touch with somone who was assigned work directly with Jen and the other Management cast members like Woody Harrelson and Steve Zahn.

Here are the highlights:
jen was bored stiff, and she went out two nights total to be with the cast, who she ignored, and both times it was to the restaurant Matzatlan, that reportedly makes a “mean margarita.”

There were paparazzi in the town, eager to get her photo doing something other than on the set, and they came up empty, as Jen didn’t leave her dreary hotel room at night. “She watched TV,” says our source, “read books, and talked on the phone. The same stuff she did in her trailer on the set.”

Pal Courteney Cox Arquette had told Jen that she and Coco, 3, were going to visit her, but they never did, “This bummed her out,” says our set source.

The budget of the film left no room for lavish accomodations for Jen, “She stayed where we all did, [at the Inn at the Cross Keys Station], but she didn’t even use the gym, she said she worked out in her room,” says the source.

What’s more, “Jen liked Steve [Zahn], but she thought Woody was a jerk. The problem was, Woody is a strong personality and the cast and crew loved him, he became the ring leader, and Jen was pretty much left out.”

Jen also didn’t get the usually fawning over her appearance that she usually gets from her personal hairstylist Chris McMillan. “She came to the set having done her own hair which when not flattened out, is really frizzy, especially with the climate [in Oregon]. She showed up in sweats and Ugg boots, looking kind of unkempt. Not at all like the Jennifer you see in other situations. I think she wanted to do the work, but this wasn’t where she wanted to be, and who she wanted to be with.”

Getting Jen to leave her house, hotel room, or anything is a major feat, and we can’t help but notice that as the years drag on, she’s going deeper into seclusion. If Jen really wanted to say “goodbye” to the media, the paparazzi, etc., she could buy a home in a place like Madras, Oregon, and no one would ever bother her.

Instead, Jen rents on one of the most famous beaches in Malibu, has homes in the center of the Hollywood Hills and Beverly Hills, and wants to be left alone.

What we wonder is why the movie’s producer finds the need to “cover” for Jen — to make her seem “normal?”

There’s alot of shadiness about the later years of Tom and Nicole’s relationship that we will never know. I am not defending Nicole, because as a mother of teenagers myself, I do agree that she should be closer to her children right now. The thing is, I really think she can’t, or isn’t allowed to be. I think somehow Tom got the upper hand in the divorce agreement, and part of that must have been for him to be able to raise Conner and Bella as Scientologist.

I had to do some research into Scientology for a paper, and one of the things I learned was that if you have ever been involved with Sci, and you leave it, then you must accept that you cease to exist for the rest of your family who may be still be in it.

There are alot of people who have left it who have very negative things to say about Scientology, and the accounts I read kept saying that the reason so many people stay in it is because they don’t want to be cut off from their family. Of course, the Sci camp says they are all just malcontents, but I really think it is more than that.

I think Nicole got cut off from her children, and there’s nothing she can do about it. I am also sure that when they rarely do get to visit her, there is a Scientology rep there always to be sure that she doesn’t do or say anything to them they feel is subversive.

When Tom called Nicole to congratulate her on her Oscar win, I am sure that was done because he knew the world was looking and expecting him to do that.

If you do some reading and checking about Scientology, the outer levels of it are just a bit “out there”, but as you read further into it, the deeper levels are something right out of the Twilight Zone.

All this may be the reason Nicole is looking more and more ragged and fragile these days. It has to be killing her inside.

Sean Smith: Yes, I did feel she was intelligent and informed on the issues. I agree that a lot of people are skeptical/cyncial about it. As I mentioned in an earlier reply to someone, if I felt she was false or dumb or self-aggrandizing, I would have reported that. In the time I spent with her, I found her to be calm, sincere, focused and educated on the issues that matter to her. I’m not saying she’s a genius, just that she’s not flitting about the world blindly. And yes, I do think she is shaping a complex and humane worldview for herself. I’ll be interested to see who she becomes in the next decade.

It cannot be denied that brad and angelina are two of the most interesting and magnetic celebrities in hollywood. Thus, they have the media’s attention whatever they do, wherever they are. They are followed because they are in demand, they are interesting. They are magnetic. They are relevant. sorry but we can’t say the same thing about others, and this actually is their boon and bane.

So my point is, do not blame the JPs for the media circus around them. In the first place, if they are not in demand, the paps will not follow them. If people hate them, they will not buy those magazine. If they are irrelevant, nobody will pay attention to them even if they go naked on the streets.

Angelina Jolie has been honored in Cambodia by having a cocktail named after her. A bartender at The Red Piano restaurant in Siem Reap created the drink especially for the actress when she visited the south east Asian nation to shoot Tomb Raider in 2002.

Now all visitors to the Red Piano can experience the beverage - named Tomb Raider in Jolie’s honor.

The cocktail is a mix of vodka, Malibu rum and pineapple juice, served with an umbrella.

BTW, I wouldn’t give much credence to lists that judge people on who they are. I don’t really give much credence to any list compiled by any magazine. I believe that there shouldn’t be a comparison between any two individuals. Every one and every thing has something unique that cannot be compared to any one/thing else. Some individuals are just more luminous than others, i.e. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

OT- IMHO, this couple has more fans than haters. The people who try to illicit the defense mode from fans are just trolls with hidden agendas. What their agendas are, I really couldn’t care less.
Some similarities among them though- they seem to be quite miserable. And at the end of their posts they only illicit pity. Well, I hope you feel better. Who but a crazy person looks up Stephan Bognar, a guy she read about in National Geographic because he was trying to save the animals in Baghdad’s zoo as well as the lions abandoned by Uday and Qusay, and hires him to run a conservation project involving the better part of northwest Cambodia, and then, when she figures out that it can’t work if it’s just a conservation project, goes to the big policy symposium in Davos so that she can meet economist Jeffrey Sachs and learn how to turn her conservation project into a self-sustaining Millennium Village, in accordance with UN development goals? Sachs has been working to create Millennium Villages in Africa, and there are about eighty of them. But Angelina Jolie doesn’t have a house in Africa. She has a house in Cambodia, so that’s where she — or, to be more precise, the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Project — puts her Millennium Village. It’s the first and only one in Asia, the first and only one outside Africa, and in its purview there are ten villages previously isolated from one another, about six thousand villagers and seventy-two employees — some of them poachers now employed as rangers — drawing their paychecks from Angie and Brad.

Okay: Even she uses the word crazy to describe what she’s wrought. Because one of the things a Millennium Village needs to stay within UN Millennium development goals is a school, so she built a school. But how are the kids going to get to the school? So she started building roads. But how are the kids going to get enough to eat once they get to the school? It’s not just a matter of feeding them out of one’s own largesse. It’s a matter of feeding them in such a way that they keep getting fed, long after one’s own largesse is withdrawn. So she built a soy-milk factory, which makes use of not only the local crop but also the largesse of the local farmers. And so, in the three months since milk from the microfactory started flowing, the number of students at the school increased from 699 to 810…and that’s just one aspect of the village. Four times a week, she’s in touch with Bognar, helping him manage the water-conservation projects and the soil-conservation projects and the biomass-for-fuel projects and everything else that she has so far been paying for out of her own pocket.

The house is still there, still on stilts, except that now it functions as the field headquarters for the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Project. And when she visits, Bognar says, “Angie roughs it. She lives with us in the forest and eats the crickets and cockroaches the locals eat without thinking twice about it. Whenever I read in magazines about her ‘glorious house in Cambodia,’ I think, What? It’s a shack. I don’t think people believe she has the ability to abandon everything in the West and transpose herself to a situation with malaria and dengue fever and the most extreme poverty. I read about her ‘Hollywood life.’ Well, you can’t live a Hollywood life in this part of Cambodia.”

And yet what kind of life does she lead, if not a Hollywood one? The way she makes it sound, she and Brad function like any other couple, even when — especially when — they’re in Cambodia. She likes to explore, and although they’ve had the place de-mined and installed night-vision cameras on their property, Brad worries. “Brad’s more — well, he doesn’t get angry with me. He just gets concerned. He’s much more — well, maybe he’s smarter about it. The attitude being, Let’s not just be walking around here, let’s be cautious in a healthy way. I’m brave to the point of stupidity sometimes. He’s asking if the property can be de-mined again.”

There are still elephants in their part of northwest Cambodia, and there are still elephants to the south of them, in an area protected by the organization WildAid, and so, Angelina says, “if we can get our section connected with their section, it will be the largest elephant migration in Asia. If we can get it so the animals feel safe, we hope to be sitting in the house when the elephants walk by.”

And so here’s a question. There can be few ambitions more meaningful than saving Asian elephants. Indeed, we’re talking about meaning on a grand, almost impossible scale: the largest elephant migration in Asia! The question is this: Does the meaning change when we realize that the people who get to watch the saved elephants migrate are Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie?

It would seem an impossible life to lead — a twisted double life indeed, suspended between extremes of meaning and meaninglessness — except for this: She says she doesn’t lead it. She says that the life that means the most to the American public means the least to her. “I don’t live two lives,” she says. “I have the great good fortune of being able to have a fun job. It’s a job that allows me to travel and that allows me, sometimes, to get out of myself. So that’s my job. But it’s not at all my life. Every day when I wake up in the morning, I’ve been studying international law. I try to make sure that each of my children has enough of my attention to feel equal. I try to make sure that my relationship with the man in my life is solid and complete and we’re very connected and having a great life together and enjoying our children and being part of the world. So that’s my life. It’s not split in half. It’s not one side taking over the other. I have no animosity toward Hollywood or the demands of the red carpet, all that silliness. That’s my job, and I’m happy to have it. But when I die, do I want to be remembered as an actress? No. I recently had an op-ed published in a newspaper. And at the end, it didn’t say I was an actress. It said that I was a UN goodwill ambassador — that’s all. And I was really proud. I said, ‘Hey, Brad, I’m not just an actress anymore.’ ”

Sure, reporters’ questions are constantly relayed to her, trying to confirm the latest rumors about her. “The phone rings every day. I say, ‘No, of course it’s not true,’ and hang up. We joke about it, because it’s usually when Brad and I are running after the kids and changing diapers. The fact is, we don’t do anything. We don’t go to parties. We hardly ever leave the house. We try to schedule time when we’re alone. Right now, Pax is sleeping in our bed. It’s kind of nice, him immediately knowing and feeling comfortable with us. Madd slept with me until Brad and I got together. They’re fun to sleep with. We have family sleep on Sundays. Everybody sleeps together. Some people have their lives together and then they have their children. Brad and I are starting with the children and are planning to have our time together in our later years.”

There are a few ways to look at this glimpse of domestic comfort. It might be the lie of someone leading a twisted double life. It might also be the fantasy existence of celebrities privileged enough to live out their daydream of normalcy. But then it might very well be true. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie may very well be just caring, tired parents who simply don’t care about celebrity and manage to live outside its apparatus — which would mean that the divide between their lives and the lives of the Americans reading tabloid stories about them is, on the one hand, very small and, on the other, nearly absolute.
