Actress and environmentalist Hayden Panettiere recently received a letter from the Japanese Government Fisheries Agency. Below is their letter and Hayden’s response is below that:

While respecting Ms. Panettierre’s personal feelings towards dolphins and her commitment to travel to Taiji to make her protest, I hope that your viewers will be reassured by the fact that Japan is carefully managing marine living resources for the future. The government’s fisheries policies are based on scientific information and take into account the opinions of the public.

Dear Mr. Fukuda,
Rest assured our viewers and the public at large is appalled by Japanese whaling and fisheries practices. Even within your own country, recent polls show that over 77% of the Japanese public is against whaling while only 11% support it.
To say that Japan is carefully managing marine living resources for the future is a joke. Recent scientific studies have shown that over 90% of the world’s large fish have been depleted by over-fishing and Japan’s own factory-fishing fleets are largely responsible for this, decimating one species after another. Just recently, Japan was found to be in violation of its quota on endangered blue fin tuna. I cannot find one example where Japan has carefully managed any marine species.
In regards to dolphins and whales, Japan’s blatant disregard for these species is unfathomable. Japan is cruelly and needlessly butchering over 20,000 dolphins and other small cetaceans every year. There is no humane way to kill a dolphin or whale and scientific research shows that dolphin and whale meat is unhealthy for human consumption. Your own Government studies show dolphin and whale meat can contain up to 10-16 times the healthful level of mercury and that elevated levels of mercury have been proven to cause birth defects, neural damage, and death. As a result, several Japanese supermarket chains have pulled dolphin and whale meat from their shelves due to the health risks. Despite this however, your fisheries agency continues to advocate for the needless killing of dolphins and whales.
In addition, your whaling fleet is now planning to kill over 1,000 whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary including endangered fin and humpback whales. There is nothing scientific about this slaughter. All the data being collected can be and is being collected through non-lethal means by bona-fide scientists, not bogus scientists like yours.
Recently, a representative for Japan’s fisheries agency said:
“Whales are just as important, and no more special, than any other fish,” says Japan Fisheries Agency spokesperson Hideki Moronuki, maintaining Japan’s long-held position that marine mammals should get no special treatment for being warm-blooded.
Your scientists can’t even tell the difference between a marine mammal and a fish. Do you realize how ignorant Japan looks to the rest of the world? Please be advised that we are telling all consumers to not purchase any Japanese made products until Japan stops killing dolphins and whales and we will be vigilant in this regard. We are determined to end Japan’s brutally cruel and needless slaughter of dolphins and whales and I will do everything within my power to ensure this.

Arrest her Over Exposed gnome azz,she only did the ’save the dilphin stunt’ 4 publicity. Her PR people at their worse. We the public,at least most of us ,see right through your ‘keep her being noble and good with the public campaign’. Trying to rise her status. Ummm,PR people shhhh.. dont tell anyone but Hayhoe aint so innocent,she struts around half naked most of the time. And we see her doing mudane things to much. I know she didnt write this. Im sure in the next few min,days ,hours,ect,,she’ll pop up again..BTW she cant act.
bECKER, what is happening is that people are making their voices heard on issues that matter to them. Fortunately both the US and Japan support freedom of speech.

Not everyone is a vegetarian - and the last time I checked, chickens and cows aren’t endangered species. As for consequences to the environment - what are you talking about, the methane gas from cow farts?
Though she likely did not write the letter in its entirety, I’ll bet she was involved in the contents. And she’s signing on behalf of the group.
I doubt she’s doing it for publicity of the kind many here cynically believe - she at the place now where she can use her fame to get a cause noticed. I doubt John or Jane Doe would garner a response from the Japanese Embassy, or bring attention to the problem on a worldwide basis. Good for her!

Stop this arrogance, Hayden. Start with protesting against the killing of cows and chickens in the U.S. before you go overseas to preach about not killing cute looking animals.
Japan is a joke not for killing animals for meat but for writing a letter to an ignorant woman who is just trying to be cool with her so called activism.

I am a little bit embarassed for hayden. I mean, she probably didnt write the letter BUT PROOF READ IT AT LEAST! Also, is she threatening the embassy of Japan?!?
I don’t think she’s doing it for publicity. It’s more that the letter is really not for the person addressed to it. It’s a letter for the public to get more publicity for the cause. I don’t know if this is the right kind of publicity though.

For all the ignorant people here who are comparing cows to dolphins, maybe you guys should move to Japan, I am sure you guys will be more happy there than here in North America(U.S and Canada), dolphins are one of the most beautiful creatures in the world, there is no need to slaughter them, Japan clearly has access to other food resources, this is not a pr stunt, it was the Japanese Embassy who contacted Hayden, it was others who put the video of her trip to Japan on Youtube, we all should respect Hayden for what she has been able to accomplish and bring attention to this case, ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THEN WORDS, while most of us hide behind computers she is doing something product, if you guys are against her, then I dare you to go out and make a seen, you guys wouldn’t, you know why because, you guys are all take and no action, HATERS
First of all I do believe in the cause, I just don’t believe she is legit about it. The writing came off as pretentious, and furthermore, how much research was put into this entire issue to begin with. Granted I haven’t read up on the issue myself, but after all this attention its gotten I am interested and I give her credit for that, BUT to tote yourself around like u are a geniune activist when u do it behind others, where others set up photo opps and events for you to go to. Where others have manufactured what you should say rather than u “the activist” doing it urself is what i question.

Wow. While I do agree that our natural resources should be preserved, I think that Hayden’s response was unnecessarily rude and arrogant. Diplomatic she is not. Hasn’t she learned that you cannot presume to tell an entire country what to do? That’s the best way to antagonize them further, not that I think that Japan is unduly concerned about Hayden.

it’s the trite way she goes about it. this talentless chick was out surfing one day and came upon some guys killing dolphins. Of course, her PR people had paps waiting in the wings to get her reaction. Now that she is on a high horse because she was shown on television making a scene - she HAS to do something. So she gets someone to write a letter for her and then shows us that she “cares”. she’s fake as all get out. i’d rather her go out and have fun and not try to act like she’s humanitarian of the year.

Listen Erin - we know other young people her age are doing worse, but does it make it any better if she does is for all the wrong reasons, it just negates the whole intended purpose dontcha think??
