Hayden Panettiere: Japan is a Joke!

SAVE THE CHEERLEADER WHALES, SAVE THE WORLD!

Actress and environmentalist Hayden Panettiere recently received a letter from the Japanese Government Fisheries Agency. Below is their letter and Hayden’s response is below that:

————————

While respecting Ms. Panettierre’s personal feelings towards dolphins and her commitment to travel to Taiji to make her protest, I hope that your viewers will be reassured by the fact that Japan is carefully managing marine living resources for the future. The government’s fisheries policies are based on scientific information and take into account the opinions of the public.

Sincerely,

Takumi Fukuda
Fisheries Attache, Embassy of Japan
Washington, DC

————————

Dear Mr. Fukuda,

Rest assured our viewers and the public at large is appalled by Japanese whaling and fisheries practices. Even within your own country, recent polls show that over 77% of the Japanese public is against whaling while only 11% support it.

To say that Japan is carefully managing marine living resources for the future is a joke. Recent scientific studies have shown that over 90% of the world’s large fish have been depleted by over-fishing and Japan’s own factory-fishing fleets are largely responsible for this, decimating one species after another. Just recently, Japan was found to be in violation of its quota on endangered blue fin tuna. I cannot find one example where Japan has carefully managed any marine species.

In regards to dolphins and whales, Japan’s blatant disregard for these species is unfathomable. Japan is cruelly and needlessly butchering over 20,000 dolphins and other small cetaceans every year. There is no humane way to kill a dolphin or whale and scientific research shows that dolphin and whale meat is unhealthy for human consumption. Your own Government studies show dolphin and whale meat can contain up to 10-16 times the healthful level of mercury and that elevated levels of mercury have been proven to cause birth defects, neural damage, and death. As a result, several Japanese supermarket chains have pulled dolphin and whale meat from their shelves due to the health risks. Despite this however, your fisheries agency continues to advocate for the needless killing of dolphins and whales.

In addition, your whaling fleet is now planning to kill over 1,000 whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary including endangered fin and humpback whales. There is nothing scientific about this slaughter. All the data being collected can be and is being collected through non-lethal means by bona-fide scientists, not bogus scientists like yours.

Recently, a representative for Japan’s fisheries agency said:

“Whales are just as important, and no more special, than any other fish,” says Japan Fisheries Agency spokesperson Hideki Moronuki, maintaining Japan’s long-held position that marine mammals should get no special treatment for being warm-blooded.

Your scientists can’t even tell the difference between a marine mammal and a fish. Do you realize how ignorant Japan looks to the rest of the world? Please be advised that we are telling all consumers to not purchase any Japanese made products until Japan stops killing dolphins and whales and we will be vigilant in this regard. We are determined to end Japan’s brutally cruel and needless slaughter of dolphins and whales and I will do everything within my power to ensure this.

Sincerely,

Hayden Panettiere

Wow. While I do agree that our natural resources should be preserved, I think that Hayden’s response was unnecessarily rude and arrogant. Diplomatic she is not. Hasn’t she learned that you cannot presume to tell an entire country what to do? That’s the best way to antagonize them further, not that I think that Japan is unduly concerned about Hayden.

I am a new fan!!! Way to GO!! People who UNDERestimate the idealism and PASSION of young people are complete IDIOTS.

The only people who WILL better the world are the young.

All the old people have F$*@ ed it up beyond recognition.

hayden sucks. @ 12/07/2007 at 6:52 pm

i hate when americans try to tell other nations what to do.now you know why the rest of the world has such a poor view of americans.hayden shut the hell up and think of fixing the problems in your own damn country first.

hypocrite @ 12/07/2007 at 6:54 pm

this little runt better watch out - when her career is over after a few more years of Heroes her little foray into so called pseudo-activism will be all she has. she better play her cards right.

this talentless tv “star” wins my award for overexposure of the year. Her PR people deserve raises!

Would you all rather have her go out and party? She’s making an effort to do something GOOD for the world and half of you are critisizing her. If she went out and partied you’d call her a *****, and she’s doing something good and you’re calling her an idiot. I just don’t get you people.

I support Hayden 100%!

hypocrite @ 12/07/2007 at 7:02 pm

it’s the trite way she goes about it. this talentless chick was out surfing one day and came upon some guys killing dolphins. Of course, her PR people had paps waiting in the wings to get her reaction. Now that she is on a high horse because she was shown on television making a scene - she HAS to do something. So she gets someone to write a letter for her and then shows us that she “cares”. she’s fake as all get out. i’d rather her go out and have fun and not try to act like she’s humanitarian of the year.

stop driving that gas guzzler. stop waring leather boots and clutching a leather bag. again - she’s a pseudo-activist - doing it for PR. Overexposed!

i agree with 21 and 16!

she looks/sounds damn ignorant. i feel embarrassed for anyone who actually believes she’s doing some good with her silly actions. i wonder how much gas she burned on the airplane she flew over to japan to even do that. look at the car she drives now..

she’s very environment UN-friendly.

“There is no humane way to kill a dolphin or whale and scientific research shows that dolphin and whale meat is unhealthy for human consumption.”

and there’s a humane way to kill chickens/cows/pigs?

she’s not even a vegetarian. if anything, she promotes killing animals by releasing her ugly dooney and burke red patent LEATHER bags.

hypocrite @ 12/07/2007 at 7:12 pm

@ heather

lol. This talentless chick is such a hypocrite! The good thing is that she will be over when her tv show is!

Listen Erin - we know other young people her age are doing worse, but does it make it any better if she does is for all the wrong reasons, it just negates the whole intended purpose dontcha think??

I mean is that why most of us who see celebs put their names on products (like clothing lines just to sell their image, its not like they were the ones actually cutting the cloth and sewing things together)
Having her face for this campaign based on the writing as well seems like that’s what she’s doing except instead of clothes its dolphines

Your going to have a cause its better that its done right then not done at all.

hypocrite @ 12/07/2007 at 7:13 pm

LOL, whoops I meant helen. ;)

haha

hypocrite i hope so. i don’t even watch heroes but i’m not going to start now.

Christine x3 @ 12/07/2007 at 7:28 pm

woah she’s pretty cool.

I used to hate Hayden- really!- but after this, I sort of respect her, or at least I respect what she’s doing. And although I’m sure that she didn’t write this, just because she’s a celebrity, I do know 18-year-olds and even 14-year-olds, like my daughter, who can and do write using sophisticated language. Some teenagers are actually capable of cogitating beyond “OMG! U R so, like, totally fab.”. (Like I say, some teenagers. Not all.)

Hey, Hayden! It’s not only Japan. European too.

fake itty bitty @ 12/07/2007 at 7:39 pm

water melon head is soooooooooo incredibly fake. im young and i too think she did this for publicity. all she does is shop, pose seductively(bad example 4 young women) flash her breasts& butt. she probably eats sushi. she use to smoke. and i could go on and on. she is no hero, yet she puts on this farse bout saving dolphins. im all for dolphins and im a vegan. i aint buying what shes selling, i done believe her. shes way to into trying to be the’it’ girl.

She wrote that most of the Japanese citizens are against killing of whales in their own country. And if they can’t stop whatever whale killing that their own country is doing, who the hell does she think she is? Unless you are a vegan and helping the world to control pollution to the environment, we are all helping to kill something everyday. Are all her makeup products she uses to put on her face not animal tested? All the damn bottled water that she’s drinking probably is killing more species than she knows.

In America where plenty children are starving and being abused, I’m sorry, whale is not on the top of my list. Why doesn’t she just put on a pretty outfit and her nice leather boots and go to serve lunch to the poor one day. Granted saving whales is a good cause but she didn’t have to go insult the entire country and their people who probably have been working hard to save the whales too.

Soooo gurl, pllluuuueeezzzzzeeee.

I’m sure she means well, BUT she’s totally being USED like a puppet for this organization she’s representing. It’s painfully obvious THEY wrote the letter, and took the tone they did that was confrontational and smug. And then they prop this hayden chick up like “she’s” responding. Give me a break. This organization may mean well too, but they are doing one of those PETA-style campaigns that just piss people off and distract from their message in the first place.

I’m proud of what she’s doing…..Good Job Hayden :D

Of course she has no problem cashing a check from Nutrogina, whom she does ads for… They animal test, but NAH, don’t worry, that is TOTALLY different, right?

I LOVE feel-good-ism hypocrites.

@jake: your response is so typical. “If you don’t like it here in America, move to _________!!!” I actually watch Heroes and I’m her fan so I’m no hater.

Hayden P may want to do good, but the way she’s approaching this (especially the unprofessional tone in the letter) is not the way to do it.

I agree she should probably give up her Porsche too HAHAH. A lot of things she’s saying/doing is hypocritical.

Yay Hayden!! She’s committed to her cause.

[Your scientists can’t even tell the difference between a marine mammal and a fish. Do you realize how ignorant Japan looks to the rest of the world?]

Dear Hayden,

I’m gone. Peace!

signed, your brain.

That’s my girl! I absolutely love her! She has a soul and she actually does good with her life…you go! Lindsay lohan you are not! And it really helps that she actually has talent..but please don’t release an album…don’t become another lohan

WAY TO GO HAYDEN!!
