Actress and environmentalist Hayden Panettiere recently received a letter from the Japanese Government Fisheries Agency. Below is their letter and Hayden’s response is below that:

While respecting Ms. Panettierre’s personal feelings towards dolphins and her commitment to travel to Taiji to make her protest, I hope that your viewers will be reassured by the fact that Japan is carefully managing marine living resources for the future. The government’s fisheries policies are based on scientific information and take into account the opinions of the public.

Dear Mr. Fukuda,
Rest assured our viewers and the public at large is appalled by Japanese whaling and fisheries practices. Even within your own country, recent polls show that over 77% of the Japanese public is against whaling while only 11% support it.
To say that Japan is carefully managing marine living resources for the future is a joke. Recent scientific studies have shown that over 90% of the world’s large fish have been depleted by over-fishing and Japan’s own factory-fishing fleets are largely responsible for this, decimating one species after another. Just recently, Japan was found to be in violation of its quota on endangered blue fin tuna. I cannot find one example where Japan has carefully managed any marine species.
In regards to dolphins and whales, Japan’s blatant disregard for these species is unfathomable. Japan is cruelly and needlessly butchering over 20,000 dolphins and other small cetaceans every year. There is no humane way to kill a dolphin or whale and scientific research shows that dolphin and whale meat is unhealthy for human consumption. Your own Government studies show dolphin and whale meat can contain up to 10-16 times the healthful level of mercury and that elevated levels of mercury have been proven to cause birth defects, neural damage, and death. As a result, several Japanese supermarket chains have pulled dolphin and whale meat from their shelves due to the health risks. Despite this however, your fisheries agency continues to advocate for the needless killing of dolphins and whales.
In addition, your whaling fleet is now planning to kill over 1,000 whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary including endangered fin and humpback whales. There is nothing scientific about this slaughter. All the data being collected can be and is being collected through non-lethal means by bona-fide scientists, not bogus scientists like yours.
Recently, a representative for Japan’s fisheries agency said:
“Whales are just as important, and no more special, than any other fish,” says Japan Fisheries Agency spokesperson Hideki Moronuki, maintaining Japan’s long-held position that marine mammals should get no special treatment for being warm-blooded.
Your scientists can’t even tell the difference between a marine mammal and a fish. Do you realize how ignorant Japan looks to the rest of the world? Please be advised that we are telling all consumers to not purchase any Japanese made products until Japan stops killing dolphins and whales and we will be vigilant in this regard. We are determined to end Japan’s brutally cruel and needless slaughter of dolphins and whales and I will do everything within my power to ensure this.

i don’t agree with the practice of the dolphin killing in japan, however you can’t be ingnorant. Maybe some people will realize that there are SOME cultures in the world that do not share the same beliefs as America. This practice has probably been part of the culture for hundreds of years. Many people could argue that the slaughtering of chickens and cows in this country is repulsive. The way they kill these animals in America are the least bit humanitary; yet, just becausephins are cute and not nomally eaten here in the US, the japanese fish industry is looked down upon.
I guess I should stress that I’m not in support of this practice.
But if you’re going to go out and flaunt that you are saving the world by helping these dolphins in Japan, you shouldn’t look past the many other animals here in this country that are brutally slaughtered everyday.

This young woman is to much, she is everything good, if one would believe her hype, and I don’t. Hayden stop the plugging yourself, and leave the dam dolphins off your faux hyped agenda. You are so over exposed. I watch Hereo’s once, it is the worse cast of actors and actresses one can imagiine.

Hmmm…I wonder if she ever thought of turning the attention towards her own country instead of pointing fingers at Japan! Dolphin hunts have been around for hundreds of years in Japan and even in America they were used for subsistence before the arrival of the Europeans - its called tradition and culture. We all can’t be lovely Americans - one word “Kyoto”.
I just have to say, as someone who spent 2 years living in the same prefecture as Taiji - the reason that this town continues the whale hunt is primarily because it is the absolute only thing they have going for them economically. They’re in the middle of nowhere, it’s been the whole town’s livelihood/tourism spin for ages, and no companies or industry are lining up to knock their doors down and find other sources of work for the people in the local fishing industry.
At any rate, the saddest part is that no one even WANTS to eat the whales - while a 75-year-old man once told me that “the tail is the best part, but it’s so small and expensive I’ve only had it once”, do you know who ends up eating all the unsold whale meat? Schoolkids. The prefecture agreed to introduce all unsold whale meat into the school lunch program - while a few wacky entrepreneurs are trying to invent “whale burgers” and other gimmicks to make it palatable, in general you can hardly even find whale for sale in local groceries - almost everyone would much rather have wagyuu beef or expensive fish over whale.
That said, the more people try to beat them down, the more stubborn they get in asserting that it’s their culture and their right. Why? Partly because no one likes it when foreign countries spit on you, and partly because it’s all well and good to yell “stop killing the whales!” but no one seems to be yelling “give the people jobs that pay more!” I have a feeling that for 90%+ of the people involved, if they had a better option financially, they’d be just as pro-whale as the rest of the world.

There’s a constructive and counter-productive way to make your case. Hayden has chosen the latter. This sort of piousness is simply aggravating. Finally, anyone who thinks she wrote this letter is mistaken.
Agreed with most comments = Hayden DID NOT write this. The content and wording is at a quasi-professional level and I seriously doubt she does enough writing to come up with this on her own.
What is with this comparison with cows & chickens? Dolphins and whales may become extinct, cows and chickens will NEVER become extinct until pigs fly.
I agree Hayden is totally being used by the organization. She’s young and probably wants to help, but by having her name on that letter that was obviously written by those savethewhale people, she’s the one who is going to get the backlash for that stupid letter. I understand where the concerns are, but that letter was absolutely juvenile when you keep in mind a freaking adult wrote it for her. savethewhalesagain! sounds like a real publicity ho type of group.
TAke a page from peta, save the whales. No one wants to actually read anything Hayden allegedly wrote. She’s 18 and probably only got her GED. She’s been out at every party in the last week, she didn’t have time for her save the whales book report, complete with annotated bibliography and endnotes.
Just tell her to take her clothes off and have her ride a whale “Whalerider” style. Save the Whales sucks if they have to hide behind some 4′11″ teenager and manipulate her to the point of making her sound like a complete idiot with that letter. I feel bad for hayden actually, this makes her look really dumb and she probably just wanted to do something worthwhile.

I LOVE what she’s doing, although reading her letter, it seemed she could ease the anger a little, I mean it’s a whole country she’s addressing.

I’m sure she didn’t actually personally write that letter. I mean, I’m guessing she maybe reviewed over it and came up with some ideas to say, but I don’t think she wrote it. Needless to say though, I think this is a logical thing to fight for. Maybe she should help the poor seals and such in Canada too. Save the Seals!!!

I’m on the fence about this girl. I do think that she wants to Save the Whales
everybody loves dolphins and whales they are beautiful creatures, so
of coarse being a young girl what better cause. Her mom was with her
and it turned into a media event which for her was the smartest thing
she has done for her career and her persona. Now the part I am skeptical
about is that she is at the clubs, and every media event that is happening
everday. She dresses to the nines, hawks products, expensive and
poses in pictures that definately are considered “Cheesecake ” pictures.
So if she wants to come off as a good role-model I think she has to make a
choice either be an activist or a little sex symbol she is not Pam Anderson
I don’t think you can play both sides of the fence. I do have to give it to her
though she is playing this to the hilt and if it hepls her career more power to her.
Oh and I agree, Japan should fry her ass, she’s a no one. Juts ‘Heroes’ made her and it wil also break her. I hear d season 2 was crap.
COWS and CHICKENS are raised in farms and poultries, so there’s no way they could go extinct unlike whales and dolphins. She has used her popularity to something great and you guys are criticizing her…even though she didn’t write, we should still give her credit for what she is fighting for….
while i understand and support hayden for her dedication to this cause. i would have to say the letter was condescending and rude. you don’t attack japan as a whole, and when you are trying to make people see your views you don’t insult them with name calling like “bogus scientist”, “ignorant” and etc. it’s almost looks as if she’s looking for a fight instead of a resolution to the matter. and japan is another country, she should try to be sensitive to the cultural differences. this makes her look like a child throwing a temper tantrum.
