Hayden Panettiere: Japan is a Joke!

SAVE THE CHEERLEADER WHALES, SAVE THE WORLD!

Actress and environmentalist Hayden Panettiere recently received a letter from the Japanese Government Fisheries Agency. Below is their letter and Hayden’s response is below that:

————————

While respecting Ms. Panettierre’s personal feelings towards dolphins and her commitment to travel to Taiji to make her protest, I hope that your viewers will be reassured by the fact that Japan is carefully managing marine living resources for the future. The government’s fisheries policies are based on scientific information and take into account the opinions of the public.

Sincerely,

Takumi Fukuda
Fisheries Attache, Embassy of Japan
Washington, DC

————————

Dear Mr. Fukuda,

Rest assured our viewers and the public at large is appalled by Japanese whaling and fisheries practices. Even within your own country, recent polls show that over 77% of the Japanese public is against whaling while only 11% support it.

To say that Japan is carefully managing marine living resources for the future is a joke. Recent scientific studies have shown that over 90% of the world’s large fish have been depleted by over-fishing and Japan’s own factory-fishing fleets are largely responsible for this, decimating one species after another. Just recently, Japan was found to be in violation of its quota on endangered blue fin tuna. I cannot find one example where Japan has carefully managed any marine species.

In regards to dolphins and whales, Japan’s blatant disregard for these species is unfathomable. Japan is cruelly and needlessly butchering over 20,000 dolphins and other small cetaceans every year. There is no humane way to kill a dolphin or whale and scientific research shows that dolphin and whale meat is unhealthy for human consumption. Your own Government studies show dolphin and whale meat can contain up to 10-16 times the healthful level of mercury and that elevated levels of mercury have been proven to cause birth defects, neural damage, and death. As a result, several Japanese supermarket chains have pulled dolphin and whale meat from their shelves due to the health risks. Despite this however, your fisheries agency continues to advocate for the needless killing of dolphins and whales.

In addition, your whaling fleet is now planning to kill over 1,000 whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary including endangered fin and humpback whales. There is nothing scientific about this slaughter. All the data being collected can be and is being collected through non-lethal means by bona-fide scientists, not bogus scientists like yours.

Recently, a representative for Japan’s fisheries agency said:

“Whales are just as important, and no more special, than any other fish,” says Japan Fisheries Agency spokesperson Hideki Moronuki, maintaining Japan’s long-held position that marine mammals should get no special treatment for being warm-blooded.

Your scientists can’t even tell the difference between a marine mammal and a fish. Do you realize how ignorant Japan looks to the rest of the world? Please be advised that we are telling all consumers to not purchase any Japanese made products until Japan stops killing dolphins and whales and we will be vigilant in this regard. We are determined to end Japan’s brutally cruel and needless slaughter of dolphins and whales and I will do everything within my power to ensure this.

Sincerely,

Hayden Panettiere
Spokesperson
Save the Whales Again! Campaign

————————

Hayden will be speaking to Washington DC this weekend about her heart for the Save the Whales Again! Campaign. And on Thursday, the 18-year-old Heroes hottie will be announcing the Golden Globe nominations in Los Angeles.

she annoys the hell out of me.
like she would even know the word “unfathomable”.
i go to a private school in london and hardly anyone knows that word. i doubt she even wrote the letter.

hmmm.. her response or shall I say her people’s response was the ignorant one… she makes America look ignorant. She’s just attacking Japan very unprofessionally. i give her props for raising awareness, but her style of attacking is uncalled for. At least use from scientific means.

haha ok so it’s good that she’s ready to fight for what she belives in but isn’t this just kinda stupid? It’s not like she’s gonna accomplish anything by doing it this way. If you are against it then send a letter to the president of japan, become a spokesperson for greenpeace or something…use your celebrity to create better awareness for the issue…don’t go to a foreign country and insult their traditions and stand in the way of the fishermen who are just doing their job. Immature.

Umm, I dunno whats up with you people but SO WHAT if she DIDNT write that letter herself. Is that all you care about ? If she’s the one who wrote it or not… ? And why are those people talking about cows and chickens in America. Didnt you read what was written in that letter ?! It said that dolphins/ whales are UNheathly ! But are chickens and cows too ? I DONT THINK SO. So I guess that makes ‘em OK to eat (I’m not a vegetarian so…) but killing and slaughtering all these dolphins for no good reason isnt. Please dont BASH her… she’s trying her best. Oh and to all these people who are saying ”DOESNT AMERICA HAVE ANY MATURE PEOPLE TO DEAL WITH THE PROBLEM ?” well now do you see any f**king mature adult that cares about this? Did anyone before Hayden step up and talked about this situation.

So please think again before you say anything. I feel sorry for the dolphins and I do think that what Hayden is trying to do is really good thing. Sorry but this is my opionion. If you got a problem just take it somewhere else cause this is not the place for it.

First of all, none of the people posting here myself included know Hayden Panettiere personally and therefore none of us know how articulate she actually is. The simple fact that a person is a celebrity doesn’t automatically indicate that they are void of intelligence. I’m not saying that she did write the letter but it isn’t out of the realm of possibility that she is capable of having done so. That said I felt that this letter was well written, with the exception of calling all of Japan ignorant; that may have been a bit harsh. However as for the tone of the letter, when something in the world is happening that you don’t agree with there is nothing wrong with taking a stance and getting mad. It doesn’t necessarily mean you will achieve anything in doing so but the world would be a pretty sad place if everyone became complacent never stood up for anything.

Secondly, the comparison of cows and chickens to whales and dolphins is like comparing apples and oranges. Whales and dolphins are in danger of becoming extinct, while as stated previously in this forum cows and chickens are farmed for the purpose of human consumption and thus will never go extinct. If whales and dolphins were to become extinct it would have a significant effect on the environment. For example any natural predators of a whales or dolphins would now have reduced food supply, and conversely any prey of whales (the top predator in the ocean) or dolphins will now see a population boost. These facts may not seem significant however they would cause a chain reaction of unbalance through the entire oceanic ecosystem and potentially cause other species to become extinct as well.

Thirdly, I am not a vegetarian nor am I a humanitarian. I believe that the killing of animals for their meat is necessary for many reasons, such as maintaining population balances as well as for the protein and other nutrients they provide. However I am against the needless killing of animals, if the consumption of whales and dolphins pose health risks then why are people still eating them. I am not trying to step on any Japanese toes here I know that they have been eating these animals for many years and it is part of their culture, but common sense has to step in at some point and say “maybe I shouldn’t eat this if it will make me sick or possibly kill me”. If a new study came out tomorrow stating that eating chicken can over time can cause serious health problems I am going to stop eating chicken regardless of my country’s tradition or culture. Therefore the continued killing of whales and dolphins shouldn’t need to be stopped by celebrities or activist organizations, but by the people who are eating them realizing what they are doing to themselves and cutting them out of their diet. In any industry if there is no demand there is no product supplied.

I do apologize for the length of this post but I felt that there was something had to be said in response to all of this unfair Hayden bashing. She is an extremely beautiful girl who has influential power because or her status in society and I would rather see her using that power for something good as opposed to doing promotion for rehab centers.

In conclusion I would just like to say that Hayden has already accomplished something in her efforts. She has created awareness for a problem that needs to be addressed and that’s a pretty big thing.

Oh and by the way I’m a 22 year old Canadian hockey player, most people probably wouldn’t think that I could write intelligently either.

you guys aren’t catching on.

Hayden probably wants to do good.

But she’s aligned herself with a group that seems to be total publitcity whores and actually use her like a puppet to get publicity.

A more reputable group would not be acting so lame and putting their spokesperson in a position of looking like an ugly, arrogant hypocritical American.

I don’t blame Hayden, she’s 18. But I do blame those around her who are encouraging this association with a group that is going bout their message in a lame, unprofessional way. They are making a pretty EASY message to sell—- don’t kill cute whales and dolphins—somewhat unsell-able. How dumb do you have to be to do that?????????

oh please @ 12/08/2007 at 2:58 pm

I don’t know hayden but I know she has yet to get her GED and that she’s spent every night out this week at clubs and parties-there’s the constant pictures of her to prove it. The girl did not write this, she did not do the research on this, she probably was like “yeah, I totally agree” with whoever wrote it. Get a reality check.

doesn’t matter if she’s not in rehab or a lohan/hilton/britney (yet?), even if she wants to do good, she’s not going about it the right way. and who’s to say she’s not the next britney anyway?

Your right maybe she will end up like Brittney who knows, but doesn’t she deserve the benefit of the doubt until she does? You cant just go around saying that someone is going to end up turning into a brutal person.

oh…harsh scene…Hayden should protest against the Europeans too.

HAyden isn’t lohan material. I think she’s sincere. It’s just this is a really lame publicity stunt on her part and that save the whales. I don’t need to see this dumb correspondence back and forth. It doesn’t reflect well on either of them. They just look like dumb Americans sticking their noses in other peoples business while ignoring what’s going on in their own backyard. Get a grip hayden.

hey Graham @ 12/08/2007 at 4:41 pm

Hey, I didn’t know a 22 year old Canadian hockey player could write coherently either. Thanks for not proving ur point.

You never addressed its their means of economic livelihood, if u can find them new jobs then maybe you have a case

People lose their jobs everyday all over the world it’s extremely unfortunate however it’s also a fact of life, but if fishing is what these people are good and they wish to continue working in that industry then why not acquire licensing to fish for other species? After all there are plenty of fish in the sea, ones that aren’t on the verge of extension and won’t cause bodily harm if consumed.

hey GRAHAM @ 12/08/2007 at 6:24 pm

If it were only that easy.

I’d like to see all u self-righteous know-it alls who think they have the answers but never provide solutions to walk in the shoes of one these men/women and see what their day-to-day life is like before jumping into your uneducated conclusions

Just saying ;)

What about some American people killing deer for fun? or chinese people kill dog for eat?

It’s bad for kill dolphins because they are too cute? or because they are smart?

I don’t get it!!

I am so annoyed by this chick. STFU already!! Get a real cause and leave the Japanese alone. And yes, there are many intelligent celebrities out there - but she is not one of them.

That letter was written by someone that went beyond highschool.

I am sure her publicist paid someone very well. She has peeps that do her writing.

She is a good actress, very cute and I am sure believes in this cause. That said I don’t think she wrote this letter. It was definitely someone else in the organization. She definitely wrote her name on it but that is about it!

YOU GO GIRL I am so proud to see that Hayden you are helping fight the war against japanese whaling. I respect you so much for that. I don’t know alot about you but i do watch you on Heroes. GREAT RESPECT i wish more people would help the fight against whaling and I want to say a big thank you to all who do.
Hayden your using your fame and the power that comes with it for good that is fabulous to see. RESPECT!!!!

MOGOLOID Hypocrite @ 12/09/2007 at 3:53 am

BORING!!
Crazy Hypocrite

I don’t know from where she’s getting this arrogance that makes her think she can tell a whole other nation what to and what not to eat. Some countries like to eat snails, turtles, dogs, mice, monkeys or donkeys, or whatever they can get their hands on. Just because we eat cows, chicken, and pork doesn’t mean other countries have to follow that. She should go back to her room, cry about the cruelty that life is, and start realizing that animals don’t commit suicide for you to eat them. They are brutally killed, cleansed, and put on your dinner plate. She thinks her letter will change a nation’s culture? What an arrogant stance to think she’s any better than them in any sense.

Oh, and if they go extinct, the Japanese will only have themselves to blame. And for all the other people that didn’t eat whales and dolphins, why do you care? Whales and dolphins had nothing to do with you in the first place anyways. You’ll continue living your life off cows and chicken.

Ok JJ fans…Let’s forget who wrote the letter (Hayden, her assistant, a word smith) and concentrate on what’s at hand: IT WAS WRITTEN AND SENT AS IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN.

I am also an animal activist and environmentalist. Whaling in Japan is atrocious and devastating. Many marine animals are nearing extinction, not to mention the BRUTAL ways these animals are killed.

Check out http://www.seashepherd.org/ if you want to help. I’ll be doing a whaling or dolphin expedition early next year.

Give Hayden props for her efforts; Not criticism.

Thanks

i hate when americans try to tell other nations what to do.now you know why the rest of the world has such a poor view of americans.hayden shut the hell up and think of fixing the problems in your own damn country first.

well said!!!!!

nobody pay attention at this girl in Japan.

Alan Holland @ 12/09/2007 at 3:09 pm

Does it matter who wrote the letter. The fact of the matter is that Japan is in violation of many treaties about whaling. Perhaps we need a new slogan.
“Save a whale, Shoot a Japanese Whaler”

The other thing is that the nips don’t give a damn about other nations economies and well being as long as none oppose the land of thr Bloody Sun.

What is needed is to bankrupt a Japanese corporation. Sony seem to be prime targets, so let’s set up a boycott world wide of this companies goods.

hayden is the best! she is so nice and I luv what she is doing, she is so dedicated and passionate…
i love her!
SUPPORT HAYDEN!

Does she realize how ignorant Americans look to the rest of the world?

BOTTOM LINE- HAYDEN IS A CELEBRITY NOT A MARINE BIOLOGIST OR A POLICYMAKER! TO OFFEND A WHOLE COUNTRY REPEATEDLY IN HER LETTER IS NOT ONLY HYPOCRITICAL BUT IGNORANT HERSELF. HOW DOES SHE COME UP WITH THE STATISTICS OR FINDINGS IN HER STATEMENT? RATHER THAN PULL A PUBLICITY STUNT, EDUCATE YOURSELF FIRST AND LET THE REAL LEADERS TAKE CARE OF IT.

“Hey, if you want to believe Hayden wrote that letter, go for it. I would say the majority of people here realize she didn’t though”

i beat she has no idea what a marine mammal is ^^

First of all, what is being done to these animals is ******* horrible. It was agreed on that nobody would hunt them (signed too), but many people still are, not just Japan. Try to look through the eyes of the dolphins here, they are herded into shallow waters by noises that put them in shock and fear, then their throats are slit and they bleed to death for about 6 minutes. Sound like a fun way to leave the world?

What is done to them shows no respect to the wonderful life these animals have. Don’t think that because they are “animals” they don’t feel things, humans aren’t the only forms of life, and are definetly not much better. You just go along with the philosophy that humans are better than anything else because we can change the world. Humans are animals, just look at what we do and tell me otherwise. The things humans do would cause any form of God or diety to be disgusted.

And to the “Americans are arrogant/ignorant” comments, please go to hell. Not all AMERICANS are the same, not all PEOPLE are the same. America has a lot of ******* problems, we know, its called government. But to just put all Americans into a group is so ignorant itself. Just a sweeping generalization of the few Americans you know. Which more than likely are the sad ass politicians that, by some ******* disastor, run this place. This country sucks, this world sucks. Everyone go die. :)

#34 “Stop this arrogance, Hayden. Start with protesting against the killing of cows and chickens in the U.S. before you go overseas to preach about not killing cute looking animals.” Exactly!
She saved dolphins but is promoting a leather bag?????? So it’s ok to kill a cow for meat and skin, but not ok to kill dolphins for their meat and their skin? Maybe HP stands for HYPOCRITE PANETTIERE!!!I love these animal rights activists nowadays!
