Hayden Panettiere: Japan is a Joke!
SAVE THE CHEERLEADER WHALES, SAVE THE WORLD!
Actress and environmentalist Hayden Panettiere recently received a letter from the Japanese Government Fisheries Agency. Below is their letter and Hayden’s response is below that:
————————
While respecting Ms. Panettierre’s personal feelings towards dolphins and her commitment to travel to Taiji to make her protest, I hope that your viewers will be reassured by the fact that Japan is carefully managing marine living resources for the future. The government’s fisheries policies are based on scientific information and take into account the opinions of the public.
Sincerely,
Takumi Fukuda
Fisheries Attache, Embassy of Japan
Washington, DC
————————
Dear Mr. Fukuda,
Rest assured our viewers and the public at large is appalled by Japanese whaling and fisheries practices. Even within your own country, recent polls show that over 77% of the Japanese public is against whaling while only 11% support it.
To say that Japan is carefully managing marine living resources for the future is a joke. Recent scientific studies have shown that over 90% of the world’s large fish have been depleted by over-fishing and Japan’s own factory-fishing fleets are largely responsible for this, decimating one species after another. Just recently, Japan was found to be in violation of its quota on endangered blue fin tuna. I cannot find one example where Japan has carefully managed any marine species.
In regards to dolphins and whales, Japan’s blatant disregard for these species is unfathomable. Japan is cruelly and needlessly butchering over 20,000 dolphins and other small cetaceans every year. There is no humane way to kill a dolphin or whale and scientific research shows that dolphin and whale meat is unhealthy for human consumption. Your own Government studies show dolphin and whale meat can contain up to 10-16 times the healthful level of mercury and that elevated levels of mercury have been proven to cause birth defects, neural damage, and death. As a result, several Japanese supermarket chains have pulled dolphin and whale meat from their shelves due to the health risks. Despite this however, your fisheries agency continues to advocate for the needless killing of dolphins and whales.
In addition, your whaling fleet is now planning to kill over 1,000 whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary including endangered fin and humpback whales. There is nothing scientific about this slaughter. All the data being collected can be and is being collected through non-lethal means by bona-fide scientists, not bogus scientists like yours.
Recently, a representative for Japan’s fisheries agency said:
“Whales are just as important, and no more special, than any other fish,” says Japan Fisheries Agency spokesperson Hideki Moronuki, maintaining Japan’s long-held position that marine mammals should get no special treatment for being warm-blooded.
Your scientists can’t even tell the difference between a marine mammal and a fish. Do you realize how ignorant Japan looks to the rest of the world? Please be advised that we are telling all consumers to not purchase any Japanese made products until Japan stops killing dolphins and whales and we will be vigilant in this regard. We are determined to end Japan’s brutally cruel and needless slaughter of dolphins and whales and I will do everything within my power to ensure this.
Sincerely,
Hayden Panettiere
Spokesperson
Save the Whales Again! Campaign

please krufth, explain why factory farming is ok, and killing dolphins and whales aren’t.
aren’t they both being done for the same reason?
Save the Tasmanians, you redneck Aussie full of hypocrisy. Just needs attention.
LMFAO at the people who believe she wrote that.
Doesn’t American have any more grown up and more articulate diplomats? Do they have to use an immature, silly little girl? I admire activism but I abhor arrogance borne out of immaturity.
My who cares?
I don´t see anybody trying to free cows, now do I?
Why is that Hayden?
Are they not poor animals as well?
But hey I like them just fine—–on my burger.
That is so true. I thought she was just another Hollywood starlet, but this is a decent, intelligent girl.
Well done Hayden, I might even watch your show now!
That letter was brilliant. Go Hayden!
her love for dolphins is really a joke haha
you can ***** and moan about her all you want but the fact is she’s got balls, she’s making a stand for something. In a world where Lindsay,Britney and Paris ect..are spending their time in rehab, jail or a gutter somewhere, she’s backed up her words and gone to japan and actually put her self in front of these boats. The video is out there to prove it. a lot of the people who spend their free time taking cheap shots at her could just learn something from her..
I dont care if she did write that herself or not… but I’d have to say SHE ROCKS ! I mean, good for her… and I totally admire what she’s doing. And please DONT BASH her she’s trying her best, so please just keep it to youself. And BTW she doesnt have to be a vegetarian to do that. I’m not, but in this case (killing animals for NO good reason) I’m so on her side.
Keep it up, Hayden =D
The animal protection is good.
but, she is ignorant.
The problem of the warrant for arrest is a lie, and she is a stupid woman…
She deceives us.
This woman does not boycott a Japanese product
By the way, I TOTALLY agree with David10006 !
Heroes has become a great sucess around the whole world, and in mine point of wiew, it’s good for human kind that our Hollywood hottie fought about the preservation of the whales and dolphins, and with her fame she will go far with this project, good luck for he.
I’m out.
Good for her. I really do respect her.
closed- minded girl , she shouldn’t include the whole japan products and blah blah as if she had the power to stop people purchasing Japanese products . It ’s a joke . Her solution seems to make Japanese , even who disprove the killing of whales angry . Fortunately , she is no one.
Compared to the letter of Embassy of Japan , this 18-year-old girl is too rude , if she really writes it .
Dudes with y’all don’t wanna preservate the world for ur kids i don’t give a ****, but slaughtering whales and dolphins, its above the limit, i suggest who thinks the U.S kill chickens to move out to Japan, will be very better to ya, our only major problem is with CO², the rest its “almost cool”, and who was the dumb **** who called her fat hottie, damn man u must be a undercovered *****, or u are jealous about her.
GROW UP.

GROW UP.
Awwe.
I wish children were as cute as dolphins and whales. Maybe more celebs would try to influence the world to care about people more than puppies, dolphins, baby seals, and pandas.
I bet you ten bucks she didnt pen that letter, she couldnt possibly be that coherent. But I am on her side as far as the dolphins are concerned.
This minnie little fame hoe should STFU. She’s only interested in publicity I so agree. Hayden F^ck off and leave the dolphins alone. BTW ,I like Japan, and other countries, don’t group all Japanese people 2gether, geez you poser- just fre.ak off. Btw, I’m American and proud.
she annoys the hell out of me.
like she would even know the word “unfathomable”.
i go to a private school in london and hardly anyone knows that word. i doubt she even wrote the letter.
hmmm.. her response or shall I say her people’s response was the ignorant one… she makes America look ignorant. She’s just attacking Japan very unprofessionally. i give her props for raising awareness, but her style of attacking is uncalled for. At least use from scientific means.
haha ok so it’s good that she’s ready to fight for what she belives in but isn’t this just kinda stupid? It’s not like she’s gonna accomplish anything by doing it this way. If you are against it then send a letter to the president of japan, become a spokesperson for greenpeace or something…use your celebrity to create better awareness for the issue…don’t go to a foreign country and insult their traditions and stand in the way of the fishermen who are just doing their job. Immature.
Umm, I dunno whats up with you people but SO WHAT if she DIDNT write that letter herself. Is that all you care about ? If she’s the one who wrote it or not… ? And why are those people talking about cows and chickens in America. Didnt you read what was written in that letter ?! It said that dolphins/ whales are UNheathly ! But are chickens and cows too ? I DONT THINK SO. So I guess that makes ‘em OK to eat (I’m not a vegetarian so…) but killing and slaughtering all these dolphins for no good reason isnt. Please dont BASH her… she’s trying her best. Oh and to all these people who are saying ”DOESNT AMERICA HAVE ANY MATURE PEOPLE TO DEAL WITH THE PROBLEM ?” well now do you see any f**king mature adult that cares about this? Did anyone before Hayden step up and talked about this situation.
So please think again before you say anything. I feel sorry for the dolphins and I do think that what Hayden is trying to do is really good thing. Sorry but this is my opionion. If you got a problem just take it somewhere else cause this is not the place for it.
First of all, none of the people posting here myself included know Hayden Panettiere personally and therefore none of us know how articulate she actually is. The simple fact that a person is a celebrity doesn’t automatically indicate that they are void of intelligence. I’m not saying that she did write the letter but it isn’t out of the realm of possibility that she is capable of having done so. That said I felt that this letter was well written, with the exception of calling all of Japan ignorant; that may have been a bit harsh. However as for the tone of the letter, when something in the world is happening that you don’t agree with there is nothing wrong with taking a stance and getting mad. It doesn’t necessarily mean you will achieve anything in doing so but the world would be a pretty sad place if everyone became complacent never stood up for anything.
Secondly, the comparison of cows and chickens to whales and dolphins is like comparing apples and oranges. Whales and dolphins are in danger of becoming extinct, while as stated previously in this forum cows and chickens are farmed for the purpose of human consumption and thus will never go extinct. If whales and dolphins were to become extinct it would have a significant effect on the environment. For example any natural predators of a whales or dolphins would now have reduced food supply, and conversely any prey of whales (the top predator in the ocean) or dolphins will now see a population boost. These facts may not seem significant however they would cause a chain reaction of unbalance through the entire oceanic ecosystem and potentially cause other species to become extinct as well.
Thirdly, I am not a vegetarian nor am I a humanitarian. I believe that the killing of animals for their meat is necessary for many reasons, such as maintaining population balances as well as for the protein and other nutrients they provide. However I am against the needless killing of animals, if the consumption of whales and dolphins pose health risks then why are people still eating them. I am not trying to step on any Japanese toes here I know that they have been eating these animals for many years and it is part of their culture, but common sense has to step in at some point and say “maybe I shouldn’t eat this if it will make me sick or possibly kill me”. If a new study came out tomorrow stating that eating chicken can over time can cause serious health problems I am going to stop eating chicken regardless of my country’s tradition or culture. Therefore the continued killing of whales and dolphins shouldn’t need to be stopped by celebrities or activist organizations, but by the people who are eating them realizing what they are doing to themselves and cutting them out of their diet. In any industry if there is no demand there is no product supplied.
I do apologize for the length of this post but I felt that there was something had to be said in response to all of this unfair Hayden bashing. She is an extremely beautiful girl who has influential power because or her status in society and I would rather see her using that power for something good as opposed to doing promotion for rehab centers.
In conclusion I would just like to say that Hayden has already accomplished something in her efforts. She has created awareness for a problem that needs to be addressed and that’s a pretty big thing.
Oh and by the way I’m a 22 year old Canadian hockey player, most people probably wouldn’t think that I could write intelligently either.
