Each year for six years Beliefnet editors have asked themselves whether the nominees for Most Inspiring Person can get any more exceptional. And in the seventh year of the feature, we’re amazed to find out that, yes, they can. The heroic actions of our nominees range from putting their lives on the line to protect others to selflessly dedicating themselves to helping those in need, to serving as a role model for youth.

This year our list included two coaches: Tony Dungy, coach of the Super Bowl-wining Indianapolis Colts and a prominent Christian, who encourages faith and family ahead of winning; and Luma Mufleh, founder of the soccer team the Fugees, comprised of refugee kids from war-torn countries.

The most high-profile nominees on this year’s list, actors Don Cheadle and Angelina Jolie, both work to aid the world’s poor by giving them a public voice. Cheadle puts his focus on aiding the people of Darfur, while Jolie works on a variety of humanitarian—including Darfur, Doctor’s Without Borders, and the Daniel Pearl Foundation.

Jolie also has the distinction of being the most controversial nominee this year, with many Beliefnet readers writing in to express their disappointment with her nomination. Many noted that Jolie was “living in sin” with boyfriend Brad Pitt. But others pointed out the fact that she currently gives one-third of her earnings to charity. For someone who usually commands upwards of $15-20 million per film, that adds up to a lot. For this and other reasons, Jolie placed second among the top three finalists.

Thanks for bringing this over Raye. Angelina was a deserving candidate, but I didn’t vote for her. I voted for the Liviu Librescu, the Virginia Tech professor and I’m glad that he took the top spot.

What I find really funny is that the haters got their asses handed to them by the editors at beliefnet. They wrote in to express their dissatisfaction with Angelina being a nominee and the editors ignored their complaints and still kept Angelina in the running and furthermore she came in second place. LOL. Talk about embarrassing.

I have friends from Canada, who are based in Fort
Lauderdale, and had Kelly Ripa and her family on a yacht for a vacation two-three years ago.
She didn’t talk about her job but mentioned ANgie once, as a VERY beautiful person.

If you read comments following the video, you’ll see
that not a single one of almost 50 of them is negative about Angie.
Pitt has only brought hatred of the “certain” tabloid gullible morons to her life…instead to his.
Fortunately, she has been winning lots of worlwide respect and love for who she TRULY IS. No one can take that away!

I think Angelina will have more natural children. It’s a natural having Brad as your partner. They both influence each other in positive ways.

PETA THORNYCROFT: Oh I did, I had dinner with Angelina Jolie and we shared jokes and she’s terribly intelligent and my god she was well briefed on Zimbabwe. She really had done her homework before I met her and she had done her homework on me which is all a bit embarrassing. I thought it was a bit overblown and basically I’ve never been a journalist who kind of goes for the limelight or you know in that celebrity sphere that is very American and very different from the upbringing I’ve had in journalism.
Nevertheless, nevertheless it was good to meet her, she’s just done this extraordinary film about Daniel Pearl the Wall Street journalist who was killed in Pakistan. She plays Daniel Pearl’s wife. Her husband Brad Pitt, the night she came to give me my award, was babysitting the kids. He was one of the producers of that film. So a) she had become interested in journalism, b) she has a particular interest in Africa as she has two children with strong African connections.
Hers and Brad’s baby was born in Namibia and they’ve adopted an Ethiopian Child. So they are very, very interested in Africa and she’s terribly nice. I mean she’s just so ordinary. But my god you see the Hollywood press flashing away with their flashes and it’s a totally different world!
