What is ‘rooten’? LOL. Rotten maybe? How do you mess up your own moniker?
CANNES, France (CNN) — One of the films showing at Cannes this year is Michael Winterbottom’s “A Mighty Heart.” It follows the story of murdered journalist, Daniel Pearl, who was beheaded by Pakistani militants in 2002. Based on the book by his widow, writer Mariane Pearl, it stars Dan Futterman and Angelina Jolie.
The Screening Room talked to Angelina Jolie about truth, brutality and her relationship with Mariane Pearl.
CNN: This film sticks to the truth like glue. What was that like for you as an actress?
Angelina Jolie: It was an amazing experience for me, technically, as an actress to work with a director like Michael Winterbottom, who is so set on honesty and honest moments. He dedicates himself; he was obsessive about understanding and meeting with every single person and learning about the facts, learning about the history. He impressed all of them with his knowledge and he gave us a great education. He’s the only person that I believe could have made this film and we all felt we were in his capable hands.
CNN: Tell us about your relationship with Mariane Pearl.
Jolie: We first got in contact about four years ago to have a play date because our children are very close in age and we were both single moms at the time. Since then, we slowly got to know each other and during this process [of making "A Mighty Heart"] had a chance to really get to know each other.
She is a remarkable woman, a great friend and a wonderful mom, and she’s taught me a lot. We’ve joked because it’s the first time I’ve had a really great relationship with a journalist, but she’s a really great woman and she’s so supportive of other women and other journalists. She’s a really open, compassionate, interesting person — I set out to do a film and I ended up making a great lifelong friend who’s taught me so much.
CNN: Michael Winterbottom doesn’t direct his actors as such, and he was telling us about the scene when you emitted that horrible scream. As an actress did what you delivered surprise you?
Jolie: Yes, it did, actually. We had no plan ’cause I don’t think you can ever plan those things really. I had no idea exactly how she reacted — I couldn’t ask her, so I never did.
On that night we all thought about Danny, we thought about Mariane, we thought about what that news would be like and we thought about that little boy. I guess something overwhelmed everybody that night because everybody was emotional. Maybe it was just the brutality and the horrors of what people are capable of in this world and what happens to families.
CNN: And when you actually came to filming, what happened?
Jolie: Michael said to me, if you’re comfortable, leave the door open and if you’re not, slam the door and I’ll know not to come in. That was our only signal; that was his only direction. So I left the door open.
CNN: This film sticks to the truth, it’s restrained and it lets the story speak for itself. Do you think cinema can play a role in being truthful, not just telling stories?
Jolie: Absolutely, and again, I don’t think anybody does it better than Michael. It’s the kind of film I like to see. If somebody’s presenting a story that they say is truthful, then I want to learn, I want to know what really happened. I don’t want somebody else’s idea of what’s a more exciting truth. I’m not going to the movie to be entertained, I’m going to that movie to be educated: hopefully we did try to do that.

But you guys keep acting like Angelins hasn’t had surgery and she has. She’s gorgeous, she’s stunning, she is a beauty yes, but hey she’s had a touch her and there, to go global. She is beautiful though that can’t be denied, anyone can see why Brad fell so hard, she is like the character in Beowulf, absolutley stunning. He must be happy everytime he looks at her. JennAnss was nothing but hype, hype, hype, plain hype, he even fell for her hype for awhile, but she’s no match for Angelina in the beauty stakes.
Angie will be done today with Changeling. Credit to Roo from JJB!

INTERVIEW-Jolie kids keep her grounded, help with tough role

By Mike Collett-White
CANNES, France, May 23 (Reuters) - It is children that keep Angelina Jolie’s feet firmly on the ground while the paparazzi chase her every move, and motherhood helped the star prepare for her role as the pregnant wife of slain reporter Daniel Pearl.
The 31-year-old, who with her partner Brad Pitt is known in Hollywood as super-couple “Brangelina”, plays Mariane Pearl, wife of the Wall Street Journal journalist who was kidnapped and beheaded by Islamic militants in Pakistan in 2002.
Mariane, who wrote a book about her experiences, was around six months pregnant at the time, and Jolie filmed “A Mighty Heart” not long after she gave birth to daughter Shiloh.
Jolie and Pitt, 43, also have three adopted children, from Cambodia, Ethiopia and Vietnam.
“My children help me keep perspective,” Jolie told Reuters in an interview on Wednesday just outside Cannes, where the movie had its world premiere.
“The world forms opinions and has a view and does tabloid things and fortunately NONE of that is inside my home,” she said at the exclusive Du Cap hotel. “I (am) focused on getting the kids to school, I’m focused on the balance of all the children.”
Critics have praised Jolie for her portrayal of a woman who desperately seeks her husband through phone and e-mail trails and in the teeming city of Karachi, a hotbed of militancy just after the 9/11 attacks.
MEMORIES OF NAMIBIA
Jolie was in Namibia when discussing the script with Mariane and British director Michael Winterbottom as she prepared to give birth to Shiloh.
“We were all in Namibia and I was six months pregnant, and I remember seeing Mariane and talking to her about being pregnant.
“At the same time I would go home, sit and lay next to Brad, and he would put his hand on my stomach and we would talk about the hospital and the baby and were so excited together.
“To know that’s what they took away from her at that time infuriated me, it made me so, so upset.”
She added that Mariane had no time for letting her “emotions run wild”, but added: “But thank God she was pregnant, because she has Danny in (their son) Adam … he is Adam.”
Jolie said “A Mighty Heart”, which Pitt co-produced, did NOT signal a shift away from comic or action roles for which she is best known, even though she won an Oscar for “Girl, Interrupted” set in a mental institution.
“I think people think that now I’m just trying to be serious and do very serious films.
“But the reality is I’m playing an assassin now in a movie and my little boys think it’s really cool and I’m going to do a cartoon next where I’m a tiger and … that’s why I get kudos in my house.”
The star of box office hits like “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”, in which she played alongside Pitt, Jolie said she had been gripped by Mariane’s tragedy when it played out before the media.
The film still had relevance today, however, by preaching a message of tolerance.
“This woman, who has the greatest reason to be just blinded by hate, is speaking up very strongly and saying we have got to have a dialogue, we have got to continue to find ways to relate to each other and not just focus on differences.”
Jolie said she would continue to take time off in between filming to be with her family, and that she and Pitt took turns to act in movies. (Please visit our Cannes site, including a link to our blogs, on )
Beautiful:

“To know that’s what they took away from her at that time infuriated me, it made me so, so upset.”
Nahhh Brad won’t leave, he’s pretty much p-whipped. Probably best *** he’s ever had and will ever have. That Angelina knows what goes where and Brad digs it, totally. He’s whhhhupppppped!
