Specialty film fails at box office despite Brad
By PAMELA MCCLINTOCK”The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” signals a trend that leaves Hollywood worried as 2007 rings out: A number of pics touting the biggest stars couldn’t find their groove.
Specialty films like “Jesse James,” featuring Brad Pitt and directed by New Zealander Andrew Dominik, joined others starring Tom Cruise, Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep in getting lost at the box office this fall.

“Jesse James” has grossed just $3.8 million domestically and another $7.5 million overseas. It’s still playing in 30 or so theaters in the U.S., with Warners hoping for a bump from its awards runs. But with such low box office, the film is in a precarious position.

All the publicity is putting a lot of pressure on Mike Nichols’ Tom Hanks-Julia Roberts starrer “Charlie Wilson’s War,” which unspooled Dec. 21.

The idea that the biggest stars aren’t bulletproof is nothing new; it’s just never happened to this extent in one year.

And, in the case of “Jesse James,” it once again raises the age-old question — at what point does a studio take back power from the filmmaker?

Making “James” was a long and arduous process. There was a well-publicized tug-of-war between director Andrew Dominik, who caught Hollywood’s attention with indie title “Chopper,” and Warners over the editing of the film.

Warners’ wasn’t entirely in sync with the pacing of the movie, or the length (one cut ran more than three hours). Dominik was thinking more like Terence Malick in examining the relationship between the famous outlaw and his eventual assassin, Robert Ford, played by Casey Affleck. Warners was in favor of having at least a bit more action.

Dominik based his script on the book by Ron Hansen.

Ultimately, Warners went with Dominik’s version, even though Dominik didn’t have final cut as part of his contract. Part of the reason was that Pitt, who produced the movie through his Plan B shingle, backed Dominik. At one point along the way, Pitt and exec producer Ridley Scott had put together their own cut. When it tested to only so-so results, they went back to Dominik’s.

Another chief reason is that Warners considers itself to be a filmmaker-friendly studio. That has been one of the hallmarks of Jeff Robinov’s tenure as prexy of production, and he soon will be transitioning to a larger role at the studio.

“We’re not a place that says, ‘It’s my way or the highway,’ ” one Warners executive says.

The studio says “Jesse James” cost $30 million to produce. Shooting was actually completed in the latter part of 2005; the release was delayed by more than a year until September 2007 due to editing.

By the time “Jesse James” opened in five locations Sept. 21, Warners had tempered its expectations; usually, when a film underperforms at the box office, there’s all sorts of hand-wringing back on the studio lot.

Warners is surprised, though, that Pitt isn’t getting more awards attention in the U.S. after winning best actor for the pic at the Venice Film Fest.

So far, it’s Affleck who is feeling most of the awards heat. Affleck nabbed a Golden Globe supporting actor nom, and won the supporting actor nod from the National Board of Review.

One studio exec says people are in the mood to be entertained — regardless of the name on the marquee, at least to some extent.

“I think it’s the movie, not the movie star,” one studio exec says. “Movies like ‘Juno’ have the accumulation of great contemporary resonance, and you have a dazzling breakthrough performance in Ellen Page.”

The star that turned out to be the legend of the 2007 box office? Will Smith, whose “I Am Legend” debuted at $76.5 million, the highest opening ever for a December pic.

Angelina Jolie’s giving Christmas

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt will spend Christmas helping others.

The couple are planning on teaching their children - adopted Maddox, six, Pax, four, Zahara, two, and their biological daughter, 18-month-old Shiloh - the real message of the festive season by helping people in New Orleans who were affected by last year’s Hurricane Katrina.

Angelina said: “We’re talking about spending the holidays in New Orleans. We’ll spend the morning with our children, make it special for them and then we’re going to spend the day helping others in need.

“It’s important to teach our children that it’s not about what they’re going to get, but it’s about who they’re going to think of.”

Angelina also confessed seeing others who are less fortunate than herself make her realise how lucky she is.

She added: “I’m very fortunate in my life. I love my kids and Brad is an amazing man and a wonderful partner - we’ve found a great balance together.”

He looks as if he’s more concerned with how others percieve him(insecure people are occupied with this) than with what he’s saying. At this age he should have a better command of the language and how to present himself. He comes across as an idiot, just spewing out someone else’s thoughts. This is not a movie. He should be better prepared.

I am in no way negating the good that he is doing, but, he could present it a little better. Maybe more that 12,000 people would have signed up by now; in a nation of over 300 million.

Don’t worry. TAOJJ is considered a painting on film, it’s a masterpiece. Like most of Brad’s films it’s not unitil a few years after that most people appreciate it. He congratulated Casey Affleck on Larry King Live last night and Larry congratulated him and Angelina on A Mighty Heart too. I agree with most that Warner Bros. could have had a better marketing plan for the film. They let the fear of the lenght of the film get to them. In their minds, they were thinking about how to market a almost 3 hour film instead of marketing the subject matter. They could have targeted the midwest and west for this film since it’s part of the heritage of those areas but it hardly even opened in that part of the country. Which doesn’t make sense. Anyway this film was made a loooong time ago and Babel which was made after TAOJJ and came out before it was a critical success for Brad.

When critics started to complain that they weren’t given adequate time to preview the movie WB came up with some B/S explanation saying it was a lie and they were gonna release the movie wide… The movie never made it to more 301 theaters, the movie didn’t even open up to more than 2 theaters in JJ’s home state… Some one mentioned that it only opened in 10 theaters in the UK, so how much money was this movie supposed to make. It wasn’t given a chance….

Actors aren’t paying flacks behind the scenes at Variety or in other publications to LEAN on the heavyweight stars and try to convince them not to ask for to much up front and on the back end. Studios are greedy. In the wake of Will Smith’s film — which actually makes them real nervous as it puts more $$ into hands of the superstars on the back and front end - they want to get the message out - if you’re making these kinds of films, we want the other kind of crap that the sheeple will bring their neighborhoods too…Brad Pitt in Transformers 11, or Ocean’s 27.

While Brad certainly doesn’t have much experience giving this type of interview, I think he has done a fantastic job of it.
It’s not easy speaking publicly, especially when it’s for something as important and close to the heart as MIR. Promoting movies is one thing, encouraging America to donate homes to people that some feel either shouldn’t be rebuilt or not for “those” people (as evidenced by at least one idiot here) is an entirely different matter. Any misstep and it could all go wrong. That’s immense pressure.
But it’s also exciting. And Brad’s excitement and passion is so very evident in each of his interviews. And that’s part of what sell this campaign. He may not be the most articulate, or have the most extensive vocabulary but in all honesty, I’m not sure that’s a true assessment because he also seems nervous/excited. Unlike a film, these interviews are unscripted for the most part. This is unchartered territory for him. That happens to me when I go on job interviews and make speeches - I get nervous, start speaking way too fast and don’t enunciate properly. I am only able to deal with it because I practice and got some experience. Also, I’ve been teaching for a while so now I am used to speaking in front of a tough crowd but trust me there are days when words get flubbed, sentences get completely twisted and you say “ok, let’s start that again.”.

Anyway, I’m glad for Brad’s work and how he’s showing his other interests.

Jolie: I discovered a man who’s extremely thoughtful, intelligent and invested in many issues. He’s just more quiet in his way. I think that’s the reason I love him. If I’m curious about something, I put my boots on and I’ll go tomorrow. I’ve been too outspoken. He’s the person who methodically figures out what he believes in and how he’s going to handle something, then does it seamlessly.

Warners did not promote the movie from the start. So most of their comments are bs. However I do agree with the quote above. People these days don’t want to think too much. Look at the top hits. No real thinking is required. Seen the story before. Understand how it will end. Even American Gangster did not need any thought. Seen one seen them all.

This is why I thought it was strange that Tom Cruise was doing a Nazi movie right after this last movie. He along with Brad did to do an action movie. As I think Brad needs to do soon. Maybe he will think about doing a remake of Bullit. Actually Angelina has done quite a good mix recently. AMH (serious) Beowulf, Wanted, (Fun) and then The Changling (serious)

I actually like when people speak from the heart. That is my main problem in listening to politicians they often come off as too polished and smarmy I don’t really sense sincerity.

So give me the words from the heart or from a place of passion anyday unless it is suppose to be a prepared speech. I don’t care who you are just speak from a place of passion.

Guess that is why most salesmen don’t get my dollar either. They usually speak from a script and you don’t get a feeling they believe in what they are selling.

Bottom line in the interviews I have seen from Brad about this project I believe he believes in what he is doing and that makes a difference

Gee, I love Warners’ revisionist history on what went wrong with AOJJ at the box office. At the height of distribution the movie played in only 304 theaters - and this included multiple theaters in big cities. Sh#tty marketing was the death of this movie, not Brad’s lack of box office appeal. Had Warners made the effort to market this film better and put it in more theaters I think they’d have been pleasantly surpised to see the movie hit at least the $15MIL mark. It’s already made $7.5MIL in abroad and still has half a dozen or so markets to open in. The theatrical BO could have reached it’s $30MIL production cost if Warners hadn’t botched the distribution AND their backing of the film. They were p#ssed that they didn’t get their way - and now they’re doing the same thing to Brad that Universal pulled with SOP. And people wonder why he only wants to act a few more years? And you know if they’re doing this stuff to Brad, they’re doing it to other A-listers, too.

WB is full of sh*t; they never put any effort into marketing AOJJ.. When critics started to complain that they weren’t given adequate time to preview the movie WB came up with some B/S explanation saying it was a lie and they were gonna release the movie wide… The movie never made it to more 301 theaters, the movie didn’t even open up to more than 2 theaters in JJ’s home state… Some one mentioned that it only opened in 10 theaters in the UK, so how much money was this movie supposed to make. It wasn’t given a chance….

AOJJ DID finally make to more theaters in MO. Initially it opened in 2 theaters - 1 in KC, 1 in StL. After the first 2 weeks they FINALLY put it in a theater in St. Joseph, which was where JJ spent the bulk of his life. Then a week later it opened here in Columbia, but not until after I had called the theater and asked the manager what the hold up was! LOL. It played here for a good month. It also opened in 1 theater in Brad’s hometown of Springfield. BUT…that was it. IT ONLY PLAYED IN 5 CITIES IN ALL OF MISSOURI. Now, really, JJ was a national figure, but a local legend. What kind of sense does it make to only show the movie in 5 theaters in Missouri?

You’d think that if nothing else Warner’s would have heavily marketed this movie in MO, KS, NE, IA, MN & IL. That’s the area that most of Jesse’s crimes took place and where his legend is still kept alive. I don’t think the movie played in more than 25 theaters between those 5 states. Also, JJ had relatives in and ties to TN & KY, yet I don’t think the movie opened in more than 1 or 2 theaters in the 2 states combined. Pretty damned pathetic marketing if you ask me.

What seems like a no brainer to me obviously wasn’t considered such a great idea by Warners themselves. The problem is - they think an “art house” movie is only going to draw the well-to-do. But there are tons of Civil War freaks all around the country, particularly the South, who would have seen the movie just because of JJ’s history of supporting the south. They pitched this move as “intellectual” with a bias of WHO they considered intelligent enough to like the movie. And that’s a damned shame.

It’s the “double standards” (and media hype) that drive create this maddness! Other high profile couples have done far worse … case in point.

I happen to think Brad is doing a fine job considering that 4 short years ago the idea of being so vocal about something like this was a foreign concept for him. And despite being in the public eye for the last 16 years - the guy IS still pretty shy and private. I’m sure a number of people who thought they knew him well are sitting back and saying, “Well, I’ll be damned…”

Exactly, I live in a major city, DC metro area, and I swear, I never saw one commercial advertising that movie, marketing for the movie was horrible. The movie was a visual masterpiece, and Brad was excellent in it.

The fact that he doesn’t talk like a professional speaker caused them to really want to listen to what he said, it touched them on a deeply personal and human level. His sincerity and enthusiasm, as well as his high expectations and hopes for the project, caused them to contribute to this project.

NPR has a spot about older people in Boston choosing between heating their homes and buying medicine needed for them to live. It was sad as one woman worried about either dying from the cold or dying from a heart attack. If these “designer” homes work and Brad can show that real people can live in a home that has low energy cost maybe NPR won’t have to do this same spot years from now.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt used their star power Saturday to help The Children’s Health Fund focus attention on the more than 46,000 children still displaced 2 1/2 years after hurricanes Katrina and Rita destroyed their homes.

“This is the largest displacement of children in my own country so I want to learn as much as possible,” she said at a news conference.

A report issued earlier this month by the CHF found that 46,000 to 64,000 children affected by the hurricanes were still at risk for a host of medical, mental health and educational problems complicated by a lack of support services.

“Many families are distressed about how long and difficult the recovery has been,” said Dr. Irwin Redlener, president of the CHF and director of the National Center for Disaster Preparedness at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, which conducted the study.

“We’re concerned that this issue has fallen off the radar screen and that, nationally, people are losing interest, saying this is a ‘local’ issue. We dispute that. This is a national problem and one that requires an intense and focused effort to fix,” Redlener said.

Redlener said it was “unacceptable” that more than two years families were still living in federally issued travel trailers or other temporary locations. “This is an American challenge that should have been met a long time ago but hasn’t.”

Jolie said that in her travels she has seen many children who feel defeated.

The difference here, she said, is that children “are feisty, fun and full of pride. They know where they’re going and what they’re going to do. It’s that kind of spirit that will help everyone get through this.”

Pitt and Jolie have made New Orleans their home since the hurricanes and have been working to help the area recover.

“We’re focused on community building,” Pitt said. “It’s not just about homes. It’s not just about building. It’s about the lack of focus on education and health care too.”

Love him, he is so like my husband (yes, bragging) and so what if he gets nervous when speaking, who wouldn’t?! With practice we all get better at stuff and public speaking is hard, he is naturally shy I think. Anybody who has acted knows it’s easier to get lost in a role than to be yourself. NEW ORLEANS: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt used their star power Saturday to help The Children’s Health Fund focus attention on the more than 46,000 children still displaced 2 1/2 years after hurricanes Katrina and Rita destroyed their homes.

It’s been going on ever since they started rebuilding in New Orleans. They are building co-ops and condos for middle income and upper income people and kicking the poor to the curb. They don’t want them in New Orleans any more and they have made that painfully clear. The New York Times reported a couple of days ago that most of the displaced people in the Lower Ninth aren’t even trying to come back. They’ve realized they aren’t wanted and there is nothing there for them to come back to. Without them, New Orleans is going to lose much of its soul and much of what made the city vibrant and interesting. It’s just going to be another blah upper-middle-income tract.

Isn’t it amazing how short-sighted these people in government are being? To rebuild for upper income and middle class…but it’s the SERVICE INDUSTRY which keeps a city and the world running. And exactly who are the people in the service industry? Lower income, ie, the poor. Are these rich people going to clean their own homes and office buildings? Are they going to serve themselves in restaurants? Are they going to service their own automobiles, ie, change their own oil and rotate the tires? The list goes on and on. What do YOU people ACTUALLY know about what’s going on in NOLA…NOTHING. You read from this newspaper or hear something from this tv outlet…paste it all together and come up with something YOU call an answer.

The project they plan to demolish…that situation is more complex than the media presents it. The buildings they plan to build…the situation is more complex than you think as well.

Thanks JJ for the new thread. BA helping out or getting involved with the children here is great…they truly need the help with understanding everything that has taken place these last two years. Some kids can’t function in school b/c of the conditions they live in. And it’s a shame the grown azz teachers can’t understand that children go through things just like adults…they may show it in different way.

I guess they will be spending their time with the underprivileged in NOLA instead of another devastated country or a country in need as done in previous years…that’s great they are taking the time to find out about kids in the USA. just great.

For about 20 minutes Saturday morning, all eyes were on a pair of buses idling outside a school in the on-the-mend Lower 9th Ward in New Orleans.

A bank of TV cameras, giddy children and anxious adults — everybody wanted a peek at the Hollywood heavyweights here to publicize health care problems facing area schoolchildren.

Even a man in a tattered derby hat, working underneath a nearby pickup truck’s hood, poked his head out to check on the commotion.

Eventually, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt stepped out from mobile medical units, took seats and scribbled notes as health care professionals and advocates spoke out on what they called a health and educational crisis.

Though the mood was light among many of the attendees, the tone of the topic at hand was dire and distressing. Having used their star power to draw the excited crowd and media attention, Jolie and Pitt remained mum and let the experts do the talking.

“We are seeing an exacerbation of problems,” said Mississippi pediatrician Persharon Dixon, who ticked off a list of ailments that she said are afflicting children at an alarming rate in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, including stress, hypertension, diabetes and depression.

The news conference at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Charter School follows closely the release of a study that found that more than 46,000 children along the Gulf Coast are still struggling with mental health problems and other serious aftereffects of the 2005 hurricanes.

The study — completed by the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University and the Children’s Health Fund — estimated that more than half of the still-displaced children in Louisiana exhibit one of three “risk factors” that can have a permanent impact in their lives. The factors are a drop in academic achievement, limited access to health care and clinically diagnosed depression or behavior disorders.

Dr. Irwin Redlener, president of the New York City-based Children’s Health Fund, said the government “by and large failed to do what needed to be done.”

“We continue to be very distressed by how long and difficult the recovery is,” he added. Redlener and other advocates unveiled at the conference three demands, or so-called “prescriptions,” for ensuring the medical and emotional needs of area children.

First, the advocates want FEMA and the federal housing agency to set up a case management system that would ensure every relocated family is put into adequate housing — with access to schools, medical facilities and community-based social services.

The second fix deals with expanding relocation options. The group wants politicians to initiate a streamlined process that would put families in temporary housing into well-established communities across Louisiana and Mississippi.

The last demand is for local officials and not-for-profit groups to provide more on-site health care and mental health services for children, as well as mentoring and special education programs.

Throughout the news conference, Jolie jotted notes on a tablet pad and Pitt listened attentively.

Word of the their appearance apparently spread quickly in the neighborhood. Several mothers, trailed by their children, walked to the school and stood on the sidelines as Redlener credited Jolie and Pitt with making an impact. The neighborhood residents stood quietly, sometimes pointing at the celebrities. A couple of giddy children snacked on Cheetos and smiled.

Meanwhile, Redlener called Jolie’s worldwide humanitarian efforts “unparalleled” by any celebrity. He named Jolie and Pitt the “humanitarian power couple.”

Blocks away, giant pink blocks dot the ravaged streets — a symbol of the houses pledged to be rebuilt as part of Pitt’s Make It Right campaign.

When Redlener asked Jolie to share a few words, she demurred, but eventually stepped to the podium. She talked briefly of seeing strife throughout the world, including in New Orleans, and how education is the key to healing.

Jolie highlighted a recent visit to city schools in which children exalted in the opportunity to learn and do homework.

“The children here are feisty and fun and full of pride,” she said. “That is the spirit that is going to pull everybody through.”

With that, the news conference ended and the circus began. Children rushed towards the magazine staples, surrounding them and posing for pictures. The couple obliged; shaking hands with parents and bending low to talk with pint-sized pupils.

“These kids need help and this is a step in the right direction,” said Lakethia Stewart, a mother of four and a Lower 9th Ward resident.

Her daughter, Jasoniqua, grinned after procuring a snapshot with Jolie and Pitt.

“I just said ‘hi’ to them,” she said pointing to the couple. “They said ‘hi’ back. Now I’m going to put this picture on the wall in my room.”

I am American and I can’t refute the concern of some posters from different countries. It is evident that there is a widening gap between the rich and the poor and the dwindling clout of the middle class. The emergency response to affluent cities is different especially if there is a threat to big business compare to struggling neighborhoods. The neverending dire repercussions of the Iraq war is an open wound to most of us Americans. Still , despite all these, the American spirit of hope still emanates in so many people I know. I for one is optimistic and hopeful for the future.
