Jay-Z Leaving Def Jam

Rapper/entrepreneur Jay-Z is stepping down as president/CEO of Def Jam Records after three years with the label.

Says Jay-Z, “It’s really about trying to invest in the future, trying to invest in maybe coming up with a new model. Because going in hard making records with artists and throwing those records into a system that’s flawed is not exciting for me. It’s not the music; people ingest music the same way. It’s just that the model of selling CDs has changed. So doing things the typical way is not in the best interests of anyone and not exciting for me. My whole thing is, how do we invest in the future? If everyone is committed to doing that, then I’m sure there’s a deal to be made.”

Jay-Z will continue to release his own music through his label Roc-a-Fella, which is under the Def Jam umbrella. Ella ella ella ey ey ey!

Jay Z in my opinion is a really wise business man.. that´s why he has all those millions because he knows how to invest.. and he´s right in trying something new because everyone is downloading music on the internet not buying records..

thank god. i’m glad he ‘left’, now he can move on to bigger and much better things. this man has so many business ventures going on he doesn’t have time to run a record label, one in a poor selling market. he gave them… three years of free publicity, rihanna, ne-yo and numerous other artist and got nothing in return, but a headache.

shawn carter has bought a property in NYC at 510 West 22nd St. for his first hotel of many to be called J Hotels.

Currently the site is occupied by a five-story, 88,000-square foot warehouse and parking facility net leased to Time Warner Cable, Inc., which will vacate the premises.

The deal totaled about $66 million (including air rights) who needs def jam. lol

Whatever. All this shiz and he still hasn’t married Beyonce. She is just wasting her time.

I think he’s a great businessman too. I’m not sure what Jay-Z has in store for his next venture, but I think he’s done more than enough to do as he pleases, take risks, and make his mark as he sees fit. Go, J!

Jay Z got dropped. He wanted too much money. No huge loss. He doesn’t have any talent.

nas said it right in “Ether”

REAL STORY HERE.

December 25, 2007. Two weeks ago ***** **** ***>*** told you that Def Jam would not be extending Jay Z’s contract and yesterday the platinum selling rapper made it official. We also told you that Columbia/Sony would not be offering him a job at their label. In a statement released by his publicist, Jay Z officially confirmed all of our reporting. Here’s how the Associated Press is reporting it:

Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter said Monday that he will leave his post as president of Universal Music Group’s Def Jam Records label after his contract expires this year.

The rapper said in a statement that he’ll keep churning out music for his record label, Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam.

Carter, who was named president of Def Jam three years ago, said it was time for him to “take on new challenges.”
.

I think he’s a great businessman too. I’m not sure what Jay-Z has in store for his next venture, but I think he’s done more than enough to do as he pleases, take risks, and make his mark as he sees fit. Go, J!

I second this.

Can’t say I’m surprised at this.

Wowza!

Thanks for the report!

LOL @ the Umbrella ref. Good one Jared, now it’s stuck in my head…. again!

lily, but what if Beyonce doesn’t want marriage right now then the relationship could be what they both want and it wouldn’t be considered a waste of time

jay-z wasn’t exactly dropped. he definitely didn’t want to stay unless the contract was too tempting to pass up-he was asing for the sky basically. Since they could n’t give him that, he’s moving on. He’ll be fine of course-he’s got a bunch of stuff on his hands. I have a feeling he’ll be better than jermaine dupri.

[~Famous~] @ 12/26/2007 at 1:25 pm

22 - he’s been “better” (richer / more successful) than ‘jermaine dupri’ for the past 10 years.

play catch-up.
