Angelina Jolie is a Celebrity Do-Gooder

Angelina Jolie recently topped Reuters’ celebrity do-gooder poll for both her work as a U.N. goodwill ambassador and raising awareness of suffering in Africa.

On the bottom of the list? Fellow adoptive mother Madonna! The Queen of Pop was voted the least respected celebrity altruist of 2007 because of claims she used her fame and wealth to circumvent Malawian adoption rules.

“People aren’t stupid,” said Peter Walker, director of the Feinstein International Famine Center at Tufts University. “They can really sense when it’s just an endorsement and when somebody really means it. Someone like Angelina Jolie comes across as having more integrity than some celebrities and a greater sense that she doesn’t just do this for the publicity.”

One voter in the poll hurled quite the insult: “Madonna seems to do philanthropy the way she’s done Indian culture, sex and just about everything — like a disposable fad.”

Ouch!

Brad Pitt, Mia Farrow and Don Cheadle also won praise for their advocacy on behalf of Sudan’s war-torn Darfur region.

Angie’s my girl @ 12/28/2007 at 9:00 pm Angelina is a compassionate person without a cause… her charity begins with her heart…
Ditto on the voter who wrote such a lucid statement re: Madonna… FAKE, FAKE, FAKE… there’s not much substance behind all the well engineered facades…
**********************
Exactly, Everything Madonna does is for attention/publicity. She had no rights to circumvent the adoption laws of Malawi, but money can corrupt government officials.

Oh yes madonna is only the most succesfull female singer of all time, her last tour was the most succesfull by a female singer, next march she’ll be introducted in the R&R Hall of Fame….. yes you’re right Madonna need attention a publicity.
Instead Angelina and Brad: A Mighty Heart FLOP, the Assasination of JJ FLOP; beowulf FLOP, oh they don’t need publicity and attention at all they are so succesfull!!!!! In fact Madonna doesn’t give any interview because she doesn’t need, Brad and Angelinave give 10 interviews per week! AJ fans are the most hateful people in the world

you are only a poor ignorant! madonna went 3 times in malawi, the first time nobody knew she went, the second time she went for almost 2 weeks and she took David and last april she went back with Lourdes and David and she didn’t spend her time dancing and smiling but she visited all her projects: a millenium village, a children care centre, clinics, nursery and many many more. But I say again time will say the truth

——

The only ignorant is you !

For your unforlation I am portguese angolan dutch and congolese by background. I know in my flesh, family how it works down there.

I used to work with the medecins sans frontières (doctors without borders) with rape and HIV victims and the killings at noights by rebels on those refugee camps and knows folks on my own family striken woth malaria and deasaese.

Madonna did her project like a rich woman, not in the mud, not even out of pure compassion. she used the so called good punctual actions as a bribe tool…she did it because she needed to promote her image to secure the adoption of her son…hence she only went and speak for projects in THAT country alone ! You don’t see her goes elesewhere in the poorest countries or in the southern part of Africa where refugees full of haids orphans are there and you have to witness day after day the daying of little ones while staying strong.

———————————————————————————————-

Madonna goES only in Malawi because she really wants to help this poor country, she’s not a UN Ambassador so I don’t understand why she has to go in all the poor countries. madonna went in Malawi with her own projects and she fund Raisingmalawi in 2005 and she adopted David in october 2006 YOU’RE THE IGNORANT ABOUT MADONNA.
Plus Madonna doesn’t help only Malawi she gave milions of dollars for AIDS, Cancer to the AmFar , to the UNICEF etc etc

IGNORANT

Electra, honey, relax a little, so much excitement musn’t be good for your health

awww look at the poster Electra lose it’s mind. Let it go troll nothing you post here will change any of our minds nor the people that response to the poll.

Madonna has been supporting and donating to charities WAY BEFORE it was “fashionable” to do so. In the beginning, part of Angie’s agenda with her “doing-good” was to erase the public’s memories of her being aslut, a cutter, a man-stealer, a drug-abuser, a vampire, and general all-around nutcase. Now, she’s into it and that’s great however, whether you are doing good OR bad, when you do it and say it in front of the camera, it becomes part of what defines you in the public’s eye. The public perception of this woman is key since it is the PUBLIC who determine the degree of success of her films. Madonna had many friends in the 80’s who died of AIDS and she was one of the first celebrities of her stature to quietly and diligently support the cause. I think ANY POLL that would put Madonna’s long-standing contributions to several charities at the bottom of a list, is inherently FLAWED.

You Go Angelina, You are truly the real deal, Your fans already knew it. Keep on doing all the good that you are doing.. We love ya

Castles Made Of Sand @ 12/29/2007 at 12:18 pm

Get real, honey. Angelina doesn’t give a damn what anybody thinks about her, including you. If her humanitarian activities were a fad, she would have given them up a long time ago for something that is less stressful and more comfortable. And what have you done lately besides piss and moan on this thread?

Ahhhh Jill, your ignorance knows no bounds.

“The public perception of this woman is key since it is the PUBLIC who determine the degree of success of her films.”

This fight over who is more humanitarian and who’s not is starting to be quite a NONSENSE. Instead of wasting time arguing, we should follow the example of Angelina, Madonna… etc, and do something for others. For me, Angelina is a good example, I don’t are about what some are saying about her, and whoever one’s do-gooder favourite celebrity is we should take example, and not fight over it. So, happy holidays, peace, and sorry for me english

Castles Made Of Sand @ 12/29/2007 at 12:18 pm

Castles, I don’t remember Angelina ever saying she got into humanitarian work to improve her image, even “in the beginning.” Please don’t write that as if it’s a fact. It promotes misunderstanding, just as you wouldn’t want others to think Madonna does charity for Malawi to improve her image there.

And agree with Sandra, humanitarianism is NOT a competition. All these lists are stupid!

I agree w/ skl: these lists are STUPID. Why must everything be a competition? And if it is going to be turned into a competition the least they could do is get facts straight. As Castle mentioned, Madonna has donated millions upon millions (especially for AIDS) without seeking publicity for it and she did starting in the late 80s before it became “cool” or “popular.”

Nice, affirming even, that an well-respected news organization like Reuters recognizes and honors the altruism of Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt and others. But, it served no purpose whatsoever for their spokesperson to diss Madonna. Why the invidious comparisons? All who give should be honored .

The world is in a terrible turmoil - war, starvation, disease, drought, flooding, fire. . . . To make a difference, we’re all going to have to pitch in. The world is going to hell, and there isn’t much time. Instead of speculating about folks’ motivations for giving, give something yourself. Leave what’s in peoples’ hearts to God. Believe me, just as God knows Angie, Madonna, Oprah, and Jennifer intimately, she knows the evil lurking in the hateful hearts of all you childish, ignorant posters who’re driven mad by their acts of compassion and generosity.

Thank you, Jared, for keeping it real. Blessings on you and all the Jolie-Pitt fans I meet here.

May we all resolve to commit more acts of kindness during 2008.

I like these two fine, but I am HORRIFIED that she beat out Archbishop Desmond Tutu for humanitarian of the year! The man won a Nobel Peace Prize at the height of the apartheid struggle! Americans are ridiculous (and yes, I’m one too, and part and party to the ridiculousness).

GOD ALWAYS BLESS ANGELINA JOLIE AND HER JOLIE-PITT FAMILY.

Very well deserve! Just saw “A Mighty Heart!” An outstanding performance by Angie. I hope she takes home the Gold.

I’m so proud of her - this is a very deserving honor. I feel like Madonna gets a bad rap, though. She loves her precious son and is providing him with a very amazing life. She deserves respect, in my book.

I don’t understand “least respected” altruist. As long as someone takes the time to do something, they should be praised, not criticized. It seems like ranking and scoffing at people who try and help defeats the whole purpose of good will. Whoever made this list is arguably worse than someone who does charity work to “improve their image” (which is silly accusation, because at this point, what does Madonna or Oprah even care what we think of them).

I thought I was on first page but somehow my initial post got lost, so I’m posting again.
I think Brad and Angie gave more than the amount mentioned.
They do not only support by giving their time but they also share their income to a lot of charities.
The trolls and haters claim that they just do it for publicity. Well, the paps are the ones chasing them for their own material gain. The tabloids write ridiculous articles about them. They even pester them and the kids. They don’t need publicity anymore because they are the most sought after family on this planet. We even wished they should be given more privacy. I will always love and admire them for their unselfish attitude to people in need especially the children. More power BAMPZS!

There is nothing Fake about Angelina, this woman is the real deal, even if she wears extensions for roles or highligts her hair, she is totally authentic, she walks to her own drummer that is for sure. She is real. I think Madonna was real at one time, but then she seemed to end up doing things just too shock and it lost her some authenticity. Go Angie.

Good job Angie, keep to do best thing for humanitarianism
i’m always BAMPZS fans forever

Hey i glaub des is des erste deutsche Kommentar auf der Seite

Mia Farrow and Madonna are sincere and valuable. They are the true winners! They deserve all prizes. BUT: who said it’s a competition?!? If you do something straight from your heart you do not think of being photographed and compared to someone, right?! AJ is NOT a gooddoer, but a POSER, a photography and fame lover!
