OlderAngelina Jolie is a Celebrity Do-Gooder
Angelina Jolie recently topped Reuters’ celebrity do-gooder poll for both her work as a U.N. goodwill ambassador and raising awareness of suffering in Africa.
On the bottom of the list? Fellow adoptive mother Madonna! The Queen of Pop was voted the least respected celebrity altruist of 2007 because of claims she used her fame and wealth to circumvent Malawian adoption rules.
“People aren’t stupid,” said Peter Walker, director of the Feinstein International Famine Center at Tufts University. “They can really sense when it’s just an endorsement and when somebody really means it. Someone like Angelina Jolie comes across as having more integrity than some celebrities and a greater sense that she doesn’t just do this for the publicity.”
One voter in the poll hurled quite the insult: “Madonna seems to do philanthropy the way she’s done Indian culture, sex and just about everything — like a disposable fad.”
Ouch!
Brad Pitt, Mia Farrow and Don Cheadle also won praise for their advocacy on behalf of Sudan’s war-torn Darfur region.

Not much to brag about in this case. But in the spirit of giving, I guess every little bit helps.
Lynn, just what does that have to do with ANGELINA JOLIE? Angelina is an A list humanitarian so who gives a poop about ONE of Brad’s exes.
It’s good to see that they recognize Angelina’s work and know when someone is faking it like Madge, Brad, and George. They should have to spend more than 1 year doing good deeds for others before they are on Angie’s level. OKAY? lets see if they stick with it first.

Also, you will see Angelina in the mud with refugees, eyes wide open, luminous with an healthy child or attentive to the suffering, the personal stories while Madonna and the likes who like to fake it will go in a nice village, doing ONLY some dancing for the show.
As a mixed race afropean with relatives still living in Africa, I find it pretty repulsive and petty from her part as well of a lack of real understanding about the real issues in Africa where 80 % of the dead are less than 18 years because of malaria, child deasease and lack of food.
Madonna like only to go there to keep on making the show as a promotion of her ‘entertainer’ omage, not as Madonna, the woman. She is just living with the very reductive image of the always dancing, naive and smiling African. You won’t see her taking a dirty near dying child in her arms or listenning to a woman suffering.
Another celebrity who is often forgotten is Jessica Lange. She went to Eastern Congo a few years ago and depicted with tears in her eyes the widespread rape on children and women…victims of 3 years old (the age of Zee) were among the most tragic victims with all their intern wounds. She said that she never could imagine what extrteme despicable means until she saw a wounded theee years old raped traumatized and wounded.

Here’s a little tale to ponder: Once upon a time, not too long ago, there was a phenomenon called The British Empire. The citizens of this worldwide Kingdom boasted that “the sun will never set on the British Empire.”
The British Empire existed fromn the middle of the 16th century all the way to the middle of the 1960s (albeit as a shadow of its former self by the 1940s). Today, that once-proud British Empire has been reduced to the pathetic size of its original little island-state, an almost forgotten relic of its former self.
And all the while that the BE was declining, America was rising. I believe America saw its peak during the 1990s.
But who among us today, with eyes to see and ears to hear, can deny that America’s rapid decline has begun in earnest, circa 9/11?
And the rapidity of its decline cannot be denied. So now, the only question is, how many of us will be around to see when this once great nation begins to crawl on its belly while the brown peoples of the world (who will be in charge, by then) laugh at the once great US of A?
Are the little teeny boppers, the obese, the undereducted masses and those busy getting their 15 minutes on the endless ‘reality’ tv shows paying attention?

Thanks for that information about Jessica Lange.
I’ve admired her as an actress, but now that you’ve mentioned what she has done for her cause, I have found a new found respect for her.
There are many more celebrities who do support their charities but I think Angelina is perceived by most as obviously sincere because she has earned, through time, hard work, open mind and a truly giving (well-intentioned) heart, the respect that most people have for her.
It’s also incredible that despite all that hype around them they are still able to put things in perspective.
That’s probably because of their kids.
There’s nothing more humbling that in the end of the day they see you as just you. Just imagine, for those kids, they’re nothing more than MOM and DAD. Love that about kids.

I like your way of thinking, and totally follow your train of thought. No doubt, GC will be tooting the Darfur horn come awards time. I understand why people beiieve that Madonna does things for publicity BUT let’s not forget that she has raised 2 kids with a lot of integrity and they seem to be well-raised, therefore one shouldn’t be quick to judge her as a “false philanthropist”, she’s improved the boys life and I’m sure she can raise him well too.
How is it the top thirty givers does not include Brad’s $5million to lauch Make It Right and Steven Bing, who also gave $5million to lauch the project?
