Nikki Blonsky’s Star Keeps on Rising
Hairspray star Nikki Blonsky is nearly speechless as she accepts the Rising Star Award at the 2008 Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala at the Palm Springs Convention Center on Saturday in Palm Springs, Calif.
She was hoping and preparing for a last-minute resolution that would permit actors to attend the Golden Globes.
“A girl’s gotta cover her back and have a dress, just in case,” she said.
The 19-year-old actress along with the rest of the Hairspray cast picked up the festival’s Ensemble Performance Award. Congrats to everyone!
Into the Wild actor Emile Hirsch also picked up the other Rising Star Award.

Haha, so it’s totally fine to judge people who are thin and may even have a medical problem such as anorexia - but it’s not ok to comment on someone being unhealthily overweight?
I think Nikki is a lovely girl, but her fans who defend her weight by insulting thin celebrities is just hypocritical and laughable.

Everyone needs to see Hairspray and learn that a person’s worth is based on who they are on the inside. AND that being different can be beautiful and attractive physically.

Nikki is awesome at what she does, it doesn’t matter what she weighs! But if you ask me, she looks no way unhealthy…and if she’s happy with how she looks then thats all that matters!

Nikki has so many wonderful talents and she is so gracious that I truly believe she will have along stay in hollywood.
Nikki looks so healthy and vibrant! & we know she’s the active type because she loves to dance, act, and preform. Even if she was unhealthy, we’re still allowed to love her!!!!

Unfortunately, you missed my point, which was that it is stupid to judge a person by their size AT ALL, and that such judgments can lead to problems like anorexia. Hollywood perpetuates a stereotype that is unobtainable by the majority of the population by natural means. People come in all shapes and sizes, and we all need to get over making a big issue out of physical appearance. Jeez.
The reason fans of Nikki feel the need to defend her is because of the number of people who feel the need to insult her. It’s kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy.
I know she is talented and frankly far prettier than most young Hollywood. Still I wonder what her blood pressure is, I wonder what her blood sugar level is, I wonder is she starting to suffer from osteoathritis due to the stress the extra weight puts on her joints. I wonder if she knows how much harder her cardiovascular system has to work to pump blood through out her body. I wonder if she is fully aware of the risks of being obese.

Um, no. “So talented” because she has completed two feature films, a TV movie, done a concert, and is working on an album. Hardly a minuscule career even at this point.
If she does decide to lose weight, good for her. If she doesn’t also goo for her. There are plenty of fine actors in Hollywood who make a successful living playing characters that are not ‘perfect.’ That doesn’t make them less talented.

And no, I don’t hate her (how could I? I don’t even know her personally or anything) - but it’s sad to see someone so young taking so little care of her body. Sure, she’s doing fine now, but she’s just 19 … the health problems will come if she doesn’t reduce her weight.

It’s nice to see Hollywood recognizing real talent. It’s sad to see true actresses like this become overshadowed by ‘celebrities’ Nikki is amazing and she truly is a Rising Star, and ‘the one to watch’
