When Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in 2005, devastating the region and displacing many of it inhabitants, UTC responded with outstanding generosity.
Student organizations, including the UTC chapter of the Roosevelt Institution, SGA, NAACP, University Honors, the Presbyterian House, the National Pan-Hellenic Council, the Interfraternity Conference, the Baptist Collegiate Ministry, UTC student athletes and many others worked to raise money or volunteered to help those impacted by Hurricane Katrina.
And yet, here we are, 29 months later, and many residents of the Gulf Coast region are still attempting to rebuild their lives and their hometowns.
While they are rebuilding, the world spins on, and the short attention span of the American media has all but forgotten this region.
But one mega-celebrity, Brad Pitt, is working to turn the media’s attention back to the Gulf Coast, and New Orleans specifically, with the formation of his new charitable organization, Make It Right. and the UTC community has an opportunity once again to demonstrate its outstanding generosity.
According to a press release from the organization, Make It Right was born after Pitt saw the devastation from Hurricane Katrina first hand and met with the hardest-hit residents.
Pitt began the Make It Right project to catalyze the rebuilding of the Lower 9th Ward.
For the first effort of the project, Pitt is partnering with Steve Bing, an American real estate developer, film producer, and philanthropist, in creating 150 affordable and sustainable homes in the Lower 9th Ward.
The organization receives donations through its Web site, makeitrightnola.org, where donors can chose exactly where they would like their donation to be spent.
For example, a donor can choose to give a compact fluorescent light bulb for $5, a can of low volatile organic compound paint for $25 or even sponsor the turn-key construction of one Make It Right house with environmentally intelligent systems and materials for $150,000.
Granted, most members of the UTC community can’t afford to donate $150,000, but most of us can afford to donate $5. Five dollars is less than the average lunch in the UC. It is less than a six-pack of most beers. And it can help rebuild a city.
With all the celebrities out there wasting their fame to promote colas and clothing designers, let’s get behind one who has consistently used his fame to promote a more human-friendly agenda.
We challenge the UTC community to visit makeitrightnola.org today and give as much as you can.Think about how you would feel if our campus, our homes, our entire community was destroyed. And then think about how you would feel if years later, very little had changed.
