Oprah Gets Her Own TV Network
The world’s richest woman in entertainment is about to get a whole lot richer–Oprah Winfrey is getting her own TV network!
Oprah is combining forces with Discovery Communications in a deal that would dissolve the Discovery Health network to create OWN — the Oprah Winfrey Network.
“The focus of the channel will be the focus of Oprah’s brand, which is to educate and inspire people to live the best life they can,” said David Zaslav, Discovery Communications chief.

You can’t be a woman. Otherwise why such hatred toward another? Funny, Oprah has been criticized for hugging too many white people, giving breaks to Whites like Dr. Phil and Rachel Ray yet on the other hand, othe rpeople claim she is too Black. Get over yourselves.
WHy don’;t you do what she did? Sh egot off her ass after sexual abuse, teenage pregnancy to make something of herself. She is a Black woman from the South who pulled herself up to come from nothing to become a woman who is a trailblazer. You can bet your bottom dollar, a young Oprah was not sitting at home hating on other women. Instead, she focused on making herself a success. That, my friends, sets the little girls apart from the real women.
Whatever you think, Ms. O is at home couting her billions while you are on a blog hating on her. I don’t think she, her Montecito mansion, her private jets, her huge influence on Americans at large, her sheer mind boggling intelligence and wit could give a rat’s ass what you think of her. THAT is why she is a success. Learn from it.

Wow, you are the voice of Black America, huh? Whether or not Black people accept Oprah (which they do in large numbers from what numbers tell us) she has changed the face of Black women in America forever. NO Black women can walk up to a newsroom and be told she can’t. No little black girl can ever dream of becoming a billionaire and be told it is impossible. No little black girl can dremam of her own network when just 40 years ago, you could not show a Black person on TV, and be told she can’t. Oprah proves Black women can. If Black people don’t accept her (as you falsely claim) so what? A successful Black person should not set out to get the approval of anyone, White or Black, instad you do what you believe despite! I love Oprah. I met her in September @ her show and she was very funny and nice to everyone. So I dont care what the haters say. She is using her fame to do something good in the world or at least she is trying to. Shes worked her ass off to get where she is today.

You need to reread your Buddy’s post again and see the point she was making. Why even bring up the issue that nto all Black people accept Oprah? Why? When this is a blog about oPRAH GETTING HER OWN NETWORK. Bringing up race is a sure way to try to start something and that is what you and your buddy did. What does this have to do with race. And who deternines the number of Black people who support Oprah? Did your Buddy take a poll? This so reminds me of the time when I was a substitute Teacher (volunteer) in a predominntly African-American community and so many kids complained that when they went home to do their homework, listened to a certain kind of music or spoke a certain way, some of their peers said they were “acting white”. This idea that a Balck person’s success removes them from their community is bogus and inherently offensive. Oprah does not have to represent anybody but her own convictions. And many many many Black people like Oprah. You adn your buddy are clearly bitter as you have not figured out how to do what Oprah has done which is not focusing on any communitiy’s expectation or acceptance of you but rather what you want to achieve in your own lives. Neither one of us brought up race, the poster I replied to ignorantly stated that Oprah’s just going to cater to blacks like she always does or some stupid stuff like that. I rarely watch Oprah, I don’t need my information thorugh her or any talk show host. I believe I have a sound mind to do good judgement for myself. However I watched it a fewtimes out of boredom and I must say I was not impressed at all. She had a doctor on her show to talk about ‘******’ and related issues. i couldnot understant why she continuously kept saying ‘Vajayjay’ instead of ******? I mean is it a dirty word to her? if so why do an episode on it? or was she trying to be cute? A 2 year old mumbling so would be cute, not a 50 something mature woman. Another thing I noticed about her was that she was very dominating. Even though the doctor was the guest speaker, she barely allowd him to speak. Everytime he opened his mouth, after just a few seconds Oprah would take over and start voicing her own opinion and the poor doctor had to nod along and then it would be time for commercial break and back to Oprah again.
Frankly, it didnot seem like she was enjoying the idea of someone talking on her talk show who was not her. Or she doesnot notice such obvious things.

A lot of people I know don’t like her for that reason - she’s a complete contradiction to what she preaches. And everything she does seems to be for a self-serving purpose. But hey, if that gets her paid in the end (and it does), so be it! That’s the beauty of living in a capitalist society.

Amber: here is why your argument and such like it are problematic. There is this inherent sense that a Black person has to constantly prove the autehnticity of their Blackness. If they have too much support from the White community then their Blackness is questioned. Oprah has a lot of White guests and provides shows that BOTH Black and Whites can connect to? Isn’t that ultimately the American dream? Why does that take away from her? You argument is problematic because it has even found its way in politics where some Black leaders are questioning Barack Obama’s “blackness (never mind he is married to a Black woman and has two Black kids). I think this is a sad burden to put on successful Black people. Relaity check: you cannot become the richest and most powerful Black woman in the world by not having a HUGE level of White support. ANd to Oprah’s credit, she has managed to allow all kinds of people to embrace her. This talent is beyond race. My brother’s wife went through the same thing recently when got her PhD and taught in an Ivy League school. Sh egot a lot of flack for that. Is it not her right to go to a predominantly White school and teach? What “black” law says you can’t do that. Stop putting limitations on what a black woman like Oprah can and cannot do. At teh end of the day, she is Black and her experiences are embedded on being Black adn being told, as she said, that she was too dark or too ethnic looking to get on broadcast TV. At the time, the Black womn on TV were lighter and more supposedly acceptable to Whtie people and thinner of course. Oprah changed the image of what a woman broadcaster could look like for many women not just Black women. The odds were against her and she beat them. And again, that a little Black girl anywhere can say in 20 years I want to make a Billion dollars or own my own network has everything to do with Oprah’s success. Your Black agenda is divisive. Many successful Black people like Oprah will tell you their number one agenda was to be the best, not to meet expectations of a race of people for you will never ever be able to do that. Even Susan Taylor, teh Editor of Essence knows she could not survive without “white” sponsors. Is that catering to Whtie people? If so, every Black person should dismiss the White sponsors that support their cause and strictly go after Black money then. Is that what you plan to do with your magazine? Think about it.

Amber, I actually worked on a TV project Oprah was involved with and one of my best friends worked on a Harpo production and had nothing but nice things to say about her. Certainly, one of the things you learn working and living in Los Angeles is to be nice to everyone and be respectful and she certainly was that. That said, you are contradiction yourself. Now, you claim she caters only to Upper Class black people. Geez sake! So if she only catrered to Crackheads you would be ok with that? What is authentic enough and what is not? You’re full of it.
You answered my question, with your own magazine, you would take money from White people but somehow that is , to you, not the same as catering to White people. Well, if you don;t want to cater to that community then don’t take money form the community. Period. Make a decision. But you can’t cause you’re full of it. Black women have the right to do and associate with whom they please. That is what they worked hard for in this country. Get off this blog with your pea brain mentality and get re-educated. I have never been to JC. Went straight from a top NY private high school to one of the best colleges in the country. Sorry to disappoint you.

Not so much a thing about whether or not Oprah is all pro black. Who cares about that? It should never be a race thing. I do however have a problem with how she sends most of her “help” money to the other countries such as Africa ect and you never ever see how shes been helping homeless, needy, starving children, girls, women or anyone in her own home U.S.A. When she starts doing that I will then feel better about her. *Remember to feed your own hungry children before you feed your neighbors children and God knows we have plenty of hungry children in America.

Good maybe we will see more black women on television
Maybe more shows with black men with black women will air.
Maybe more positive and interesting black women living their life.( I think all black women are interesting, poor, uneducated as well as rich and educated we all have a story to tell, and it’s time we told it.
