Oprah Gets Her Own TV Network
The world’s richest woman in entertainment is about to get a whole lot richer–Oprah Winfrey is getting her own TV network!
Oprah is combining forces with Discovery Communications in a deal that would dissolve the Discovery Health network to create OWN — the Oprah Winfrey Network.
“The focus of the channel will be the focus of Oprah’s brand, which is to educate and inspire people to live the best life they can,” said David Zaslav, Discovery Communications chief.

Milli - Frankly, it didnot seem like she was enjoying the idea of someone talking on her talk show who was not her. Or she doesnot notice such obvious things.
I am all for power to women, financial success for women etc. Well , I am not buing Oprah’s saint persona. She is a business person, a good person, but not definitely saintly.
I would not go aroung sleeping on thousands of dollars worth sheets, sending a private jet to pick up my cupcakes etc if I truly want to serve the poor and unfortunate. Its not just the way of a selfless person.
And I don’t buy what she preaches either. Goodlife? What goodlife? All I see is a hugely successful business woman who binges on food , gains 50 pounds, goes on unhealthy diets and then hires some fitness guru to lose it and its big news, the fitness guru is the new IT trainer etc.
Note to Oprah, just follow a normal balanced diet and move your butt you will be ok.
She is overrated,no doubt.

A lot of people I know don’t like her for that reason - she’s a complete contradiction to what she preaches. And everything she does seems to be for a self-serving purpose. But hey, if that gets her paid in the end (and it does), so be it! That’s the beauty of living in a capitalist society.

You need to be an independent thinker and stand for something that is more linked to humanity and open-mindedness that your crap comment that you do not know ONE person who is Black who likes Oprah. Your gross generalization leads me to believe you are lying. I am sorry. You know not ONE Black person who likes her? How many Black people do you? And if you are Black, yes, how many of the Black people you know admitted this? AN dif so, do you not h=find it probeblmatic that not ONE of your Black peers/friends etc happens to like the most successful Black woman in America ever? Obviously you know nothing about Oprah because she caters to white people. I only know 1 black person who likes her and watches her show (and I’m black).
What does catering to White people mean? She kisses their ass? She has them on their show? What what what??? And you say such a blatant accusoatory statemnent is now one that is race filled. If Oprah caters to White people when she has fns of all colors, this would be highly problematic and would go against anything her Network stands for so for you to make that charge - honey, it is a very serious charge. Give examples to how she caters to White people? Why cause she has White fans? Cuase she is nice to them when they are on her show? Does a Black singer cater to Whtie fans when their audience members are White? Does a politician cater to White voters when they get White votes? What does “cater to White people” mean?

And yoou go for the cheap shot and attack Oprah on her weight. Good job. I thought only sexist pigs did that. Yeah, yeah, ,yeah Oprah did and Oprah that. Sh eis self involved and it is about her and blah blah blah. Bottom line: you are on a blog figuring out where your next rent check is coming from and she has become the most successful Black woman in America ever! This comes 50 years after she said she remembers watching TV and realizing that Blacks could perform on TV but would not be interviewd. THat blacks were not allowed to touch hands with a Whtie person. That the only person of color she ever saw on TV were Sidney Poitier and Diana Ross. A poor girl from the South who has no indoor plumbing goes from rape victim, teen mother, to the richest Black woman in the world and all you can do is focus on how self involved she is. Classic. Truly classic.

No I did not take a poll, but the bottom line is that Oprah is not well liked by SOME black people as others would like to think. Take a look at her show, her audience is mostly white….That’s a fact. So I was agreeing with Amber commenting on Shiela’s statement. Whether you want to see it or simply be in denial, she has lost alot of her black audience. Again I give props to her for doing her thing.

Amber: here is why your argument and such like it are problematic. There is this inherent sense that a Black person has to constantly prove the autehnticity of their Blackness. If they have too much support from the White community then their Blackness is questioned. Oprah has a lot of White guests and provides shows that BOTH Black and Whites can connect to? Isn’t that ultimately the American dream? Why does that take away from her? You argument is problematic because it has even found its way in politics where some Black leaders are questioning Barack Obama’s “blackness (never mind he is married to a Black woman and has two Black kids). I think this is a sad burden to put on successful Black people. Relaity check: you cannot become the richest and most powerful Black woman in the world by not having a HUGE level of White support. ANd to Oprah’s credit, she has managed to allow all kinds of people to embrace her. This talent is beyond race. My brother’s wife went through the same thing recently when got her PhD and taught in an Ivy League school. Sh egot a lot of flack for that. Is it not her right to go to a predominantly White school and teach? What “black” law says you can’t do that. Stop putting limitations on what a black woman like Oprah can and cannot do. At teh end of the day, she is Black and her experiences are embedded on being Black adn being told, as she said, that she was too dark or too ethnic looking to get on broadcast TV. At the time, the Black womn on TV were lighter and more supposedly acceptable to Whtie people and thinner of course. Oprah changed the image of what a woman broadcaster could look like for many women not just Black women. The odds were against her and she beat them. And again, that a little Black girl anywhere can say in 20 years I want to make a Billion dollars or own my own network has everything to do with Oprah’s success. Your Black agenda is divisive. Many successful Black people like Oprah will tell you their number one agenda was to be the best, not to meet expectations of a race of people for you will never ever be able to do that. Even Susan Taylor, teh Editor of Essence knows she could not survive without “white” sponsors. Is that catering to Whtie people? If so, every Black person should dismiss the White sponsors that support their cause and strictly go after Black money then. Is that what you plan to do with your magazine? Think about it.

There you go again reading into something that wasn’t in my post. I told you to read her magazine and watch her show, period. Yes, she embraces all people - that’s wonderful. Unless you didn’t just get off the boat from Africa, NO black person in this country is 100% African. Hell, even some Africans aren’t even 100% black! I have no problem with her taking money from white people - hey, I will. But her magazine and her show very rarely has anything to do with the average African American experience in this country. Upper class blacks? Maybe, but that’s about it.

Amber, I actually worked on a TV project Oprah was involved with and one of my best friends worked on a Harpo production and had nothing but nice things to say about her. Certainly, one of the things you learn working and living in Los Angeles is to be nice to everyone and be respectful and she certainly was that. That said, you are contradiction yourself. Now, you claim she caters only to Upper Class black people. Geez sake! So if she only catrered to Crackheads you would be ok with that? What is authentic enough and what is not? You’re full of it.
You answered my question, with your own magazine, you would take money from White people but somehow that is , to you, not the same as catering to White people. Well, if you don;t want to cater to that community then don’t take money form the community. Period. Make a decision. But you can’t cause you’re full of it. It is people like you who would in a heartbeat sell tehir newborn to collect the big fat check from a White company yet pretend you are authentic cause all your subject matter has to do with “black issues”> This hypocrisy is astounding. I think what Amber is saying is Oprah made her money from being a smart business woman and catering to those who has the money which in this country is whites, and if that’s what it takes to make it the why not use the opportunity. Count me in as a colored woman who can’t stand Oprah and her gang of experts. I’m getting pretty sick of seeing her heavily made-up picture on her magazine and every where, night or day. Obviously she is too full of herself or else she would have put a model on its cover.
