This is not something new; it has been the standard practice for most news outlets for many years - the BBC, CNN, US national networks, Associated Press, etc. (The entertainment shows as well.) They keep an up-to-date ‘inventory’ of obituaries of the top, say, 100 most newsworthy people. Actors/newsmakers who are elderly, those who are chronically ill, every major foreigh leader - even anyone in the entertainment business with a known drug or alcohol problem. And so on. They do it because as soon as the news comes down that someone has passed, there’s no research involved and the obit can be disseminated immediately. It’s also someone’s job to keep them up to date.

It may seem to many to be morbid or uncalled for, but it’s a fact of life in the news business. I’m not surprised Britney would be on anyone’s ‘list’.

I think what they’re saying is they need her dead whether it’s suicide all the press murders her. They need to be right. Too many people of power look like complete fools.

To be fair, most, if not all, newspapers begin compiling info for obitiuaries early—that’s why when a celebrity dies, their obituary is printed so soon.

These people are vultures waiting to make money off this poor girl’s misfortune. People may not like what she is doing and even blame her for the publicity but Britney is obviously sick and needs help to get out of the grave she’s digging for herself by not doing so rather than being helped into the grave by those in need of the biggest story of the decade.

How awful can you be to a person? She is going through such a tough time and I personally think she is trying. I mean it’s hard enough to have a personal, emotional breakdown make international headlines every week and having paparazzi around when your children are taken away from you. But, to have an obituary written about you on top of all of this WHILE you are alive, is just wrong.

As long as they don’t release it by mistake it’s pretty standard practice. She is at risk. The BBC had the Queen Mum’s obituary ready for ages, and even aired it by mistake a year before she was dead… Now hat is bad.

Alright Amber, I guess the only thing we can agree on was it has been presented in a tacky manner. I’m currently taking Journalism myself in college, but I’m not that fat into it yet. I’d like to be a respectable reporter and writer.

It’s called a graveyard file and every news outlet has one for every celebrity and public figure. If someone dies at 7 p.m., you have to have something ready to go to press that night so it makes the morning news. You just write the lead saying how the person died and off it goes to press. This is not news that the AP has this. I’m sure it has a graveyard file on Cameron Diaz, President Bush, Oprah Winfrey and Britney. Let’s just pray the AP doesn’t have to use the one on Britney for a while.

Almost all obits are written in advance, particularly for people of note deemed at risk of death (old, self-destructive, etc). It may seem morbid, but it’s true.

Large newspapers do write up obits for prominent people and celebrities in advance .

No, theres nothing wrong with them writing it. They are in the celebrity news business after all. And as sad as it is, a celebrities death is news. They’re not saying it is going to happen, or they wish it would happen or they’re going to hire a hitman to take her out so they can print it. They’re just writing it to be prepared.

Lets face it people, Britney isn’t well and honestly if she keeps going the way shes going, something will happen to her whether its overdose or suicide or something. NOT saying its goign to happen because she can still definitely turn her life around if she decides to or if shes forced into rehab or a hospital or something. But honestly, the way shes going its not looking good.

Something with Brit HAS to change, or she will die at which point the Associated Press will be prepared for the biggest story to hit their industry. Its just business people, as sad as it sounds.

I dont understand why her family is not being more aggressive and trying to help her. If this were my child I would be in front of a judge trying to get her commited. Desperate times call for desperate measures and her parents should be willing to do anything. She does not seem to be equipped to make decisions in her best interest. As others have pointed out, it’s standard practice to have obituaries written for those in the public eye well in advance of their actual deaths. They’ll usually leave space for the where/when/how, but they’ll have the main details of the life already to go. I work for a newspaper, and we have obituaries ready to go for our governor, mayor and various other political figures, as well as major local figures. Considering her recent pattern of erratic behavior, the AP is just doing its job in preparing for the worst-case scenario.

As others have mentioned before this is not something that they’re only doing for Britney. The AP along with many other major newspapers already have obituaries written about all major celebrities (including politicians, actors, athletes, etc) written that haven’t died yet. An obituary is essentially a biography of the person in question. Major newspapers will have these in their database and will include all major information on this person’s life minus the date and the way in which they died so when that person does pass away they have it ready to publish. I only know this because I’ve taken journalism classes and I even had to write a “pre-death” obituary for Steven Spielberg.
