Newsweek has put together its 2008 Oscar roundtable including Angelina Jolie, George Clooney, Daniel Day-Lewis, Ellen Page, Marion Cotillard and James McAvoy.
Angie on A Mighty Heart:
“I was comfortable when Mariane [Pearl] was comfortable. But I wasn’t so comfortable the first day of shooting, when I realized his style was so unbelievably raw. There is often no rehearsal, no one saying “cut.” For example, you have three different rooms, and we would go into one room and we’d be talking, say our five lines, and he’d film us. Then I’d go pee, and I’d come out, and the camera was still on. So I’d think, “OK …” Then I’d say my five lines again, and that would turn into 10 more minutes of talking, and then someone would go get something from the kitchen and I’d go to my bedroom, and he’d follow me and he just wouldn’t leave. It was really odd. But it became just the most perfect way to shoot that film. It was chaos in that moment. It was very intimate, and my big fear was that something horrible might happen and the camera would be like this. [She gestures as though there's a camera right in her face] But everybody was absolutely connected in every single moment. Even when we’d have lunch, we’d have it together at the table, or we’d all go for a walk together. We were just always present in the film. And so as an actor it brought me back to loving acting, and that was just great. But he does cross a line. One day one of the girls got sick and threw up, and he said, “Next time, tell us.” So he can be a little crazy. But I absolutely adore him.”

Angie is wonderful, although she is the biggest star among them, she doesnt like try hard and steal the spotlight from everyone.
Like when they talk about paparrazi, we all know she the most stalked person in the room and yet she just downplay it and did not talk about her experience.
Clooney and Mcavoy talk too much, but i suppose it was ok, since the moderators were not very good in making follow-ups.
It was an interesting roundtable. Mc Covay is a joker along with George. I noticed the Angelina played with her ring a lot. I wonder if that is something she does when she is nervous? Angelina certainly is a lot larger in the chest than Ellen Page and Marion Coutollaird. I felt for Coultallarird because she does not speak English easily . Daniel day Lewis is not a talker but when he talks he is interesting. Angelina speaks well.

I think Jolie and Christie are the only ones with a shot of actually being recognized by the Academy, but I think the other three women all give brilliant performances. If this were the actual nomination list, it might be the most beautiful class of Best Actress nominees in the history of the awards.
I want to single out Julie Delpy for not only giving a brilliant, nuanced and honest portrait in 2 Days in Paris, but also for writing it, directing it, editing it. To be able to give such a wonderful performance while also being able handle all of those technical duties is nothing short of amazing. The film is basically her own personal version of Annie Hall and she is most definitely Woody Allen, right down to the thick glasses she wears throughout the film. I first fell in love with Delpy in Before Sunrise when she was the young and hopeful Celine and here she plays the antithesis of that character, someone jaded and stuck in a relationship that she can’t quite figure out. The relationship works, but does it work well enough? The film is also hysterically funny and not just in the cliché Ugly American goes to Paris vein. I cannot wait to see what Delpy does next, either behind the camera or in front of it.
That being said, it is Angelina Jolie who gives the best performance in this category. I don’t really care about the politics behind it, nor do I care about what she does in her private life – okay, maybe I do, I’m human. But the most important thing is what goes on the screen and what Jolie does is pretty remarkable. Not only does she nail a difficult accent (a mixture of French and Cuban), but she remains so tightly wound throughout the entire picture that we just want her to scream and when she finally does, it is so heartbreaking and relieving at the same time; we lament the fact that she is upset, but we are so glad the misery of waiting is over. Jolie makes Marianne Pearl more than just the widow of Daniel Pearl; she makes her into a person we can all relate to, someone whose pain and anguish we never want to suffer through.
Julie Christie or Marion Cotillard might get the win, but I think Jolie’s performance will be the best remembered.

Angie is an artist, actor’s actor. Oscars and GG are almost like lottery, so just being nominated is already a win. Angie is already an Oscar winner when she was just in her 20s. She has a long, healthy, and prestigious career ahead. Now she is even stronger with her life partner at her side, and big, wonderful family who love and support her. Congrats Angie for your wonderful work and please do continue your art for us fans and your peers!

Here is a critic who really loved Angie’s portrayal of MP in AMH.
Critics and SAG members appreciated her performance though AMH was not much praised by people. May be US is in depressed period because of IraqWar and economic situation and losing global political power. Some people didn’t want to watch war-related AMH.

I’d rather Jolie win for Changeling. Marion’s role was iconic, and arguably the among the greatest in history. I have a feeling this is Marion’s only chance at Oscar, so she deserves all the attention this year for a phenomenal performance. Jolie’s locked nomination is enough recognition, to prove that she is still a respected actress. I’d rather Jolie win for Changeling because from what I’ve read its a GREAT film.

I think it is too early to comment on the Changeling. We have not even seen a trailer , yet. I think we should wait until the movie is out before making any sort of awards predictions. I feel the same way about Benjamon Button. I want to see the film first.

I get your point. It depends on how the Academy decides to vote. If they want to give Marion her one chance they may but then again the film was hardly seen and sh eis a fairly unknown so that can go against her.
Julie Christie is not enough of a screen icon to warrant getting an Oscar for a film no one saw. I mean she is important - Dr. Zhivago is one of my favorite films - but she is known for “Shampoo” and a few other things and so the Academy won’t feel as if they owe her an Oscar.
Angie is so relevant right now. She is a globalist who believes in peace and human rights. Danny Pearl’ story reminds us what we are fighting for post 911 so it might be a symbolic gesture to honor Angie’s performance given that the subject matter is so on the top of the list of things affecting our lives - terrorism.
And she is a a Hollywood golden child who has grown and is proof of a woman evolving in Hollywood.
I think given all this the Oscar is Angie’s this year.

George and James are so funny, they sure make the roundtable more lively. Angelina and George were the biggest star, but Angie was quite humble, down to earth and as usual very articualte and eloquent. Marion was so frenchy and pretty, too bad she can’t convey herself freely with English.
I think Julie Christie and Marion were the the two frontrunner in Oscar, with Julie got the better shot. but I’ll be very happy if Angie was nominated . a nomination was already an aknowledgement and will always be in Angie’s resume.

I too thought that Angelina seemed nervous, unusually so for her. She constantly twisted the large gold band on her right hand. Her clothes were loose on her, big full blouse and loose skirt, much larger breasts especially in comparison to the other two women on the stage with her. When introduced last she moved very quickly to her seat. Her face is definitely fuller.
Just some observations. I know nothing. But something is different.
US claims in the new issue that when asked if Angelina was expecting, “Pitt’s rep said no, not to the best of my knowledge” . Rather cryptic, much like the answer NicoleK’s rep gave 2 weeks before she admitted she was pregnant., “No she is not, if she was pregnant every time someone said she was she would have 30 children”.
I will be keeping an eye on Angelina’s dress choices in the next couple of weeks, SAG, SB, NAACP, Indie Spirit, and Oscars (or whatever happens with those).

I’m judging it based on precursors. Marion, Julie, and Ellen have all the critics awards/GGs/Satelites/CCAs..Marion is also everyone’s favourite performance to win.

Anyone who knows anything about acting and is not a hater and saw AMH knows Angie gave a performance more than worthy of an Oscar nomination. The woman’s face is plastered all over the tabloids yet she had you believe she was M. Pearl. It was a great performance.

I never heard that thing in Japan.
I’m not much sushi fan but I was eager to eat sushi everyday when i was between 2-3 months pegnant. Do you know sushi rice uses a lot of vinegar with sugar. I wanted acetic food at that time. Some pregnant woman takes lemon but in my case it was sushi.

Just finished watching the Roundtable video. Mygawd I have another reason to dislike GC. When the moderator asked Angie about bringing the press along when they visit disadvantaged countries. Ohmygawd she didn’t get a chance to answer because GC jumped in and answered the question. She made another attempt and he started talking again. It was as though he needed to answer for her. He was annoying as h*ll.

I totally agree with you. Lily Allen is her name. I am very surprised that Nicole Kidman admitted she was pregnant, she is not showing at all, and she has a history of pregnancy problems. It is safer to wait until one is in the 2nd trimester. HalleB and Cate Blancett did not admit anything until well into their 2nd trimester, they ignored those who asked until they were truly showing. It is so hard for those in the public eye to keep their private lives private. Angie has so many public events in the next 2 months, if she is pregnant I hope she can keep it private until she is in the 2nd trimester like she did with Shiloh.

…and excuse me, but WTF is she even GOING FOR?? …she has no movie, she has no upcoming movie, and she’s not nominated for a damn thing….
…then I remembered…that LIKE MOST OF STEPHEN HUVANE’S CLIENTS, they cannot get off the ‘Brangelina,’ COATTAIL to save their lives. It would have given Paltry a major boost and people would remember she was alive, if they could once more associate her with Brad Pitt (flashback to more than a decade ago). Huvane tried to do it when Brad & Angie were in Chicago by booking Paltry in the same hotel as them and by floating false stories (sound familiar?) about them doing a movie together.

He should have allowed her to answer, and then if he wanted to, he could have then elaborated on anything she may have omitted. I personally thought he was being a little rude there. Probably not intentionally, but out of order nonetheless.

She is merely a good actress, like many working their craft. And like some hits her share of home runs. Like the film or not, ‘A Mighty Heart’ is a home run. But puttng that aside, if she wins, great, if she doesn’t, no big deal. I don’t need Angie to be this ‘great actor’; I’m fine with her ’sum being greater than the parts’. Her greatest role is the one where she plays Angelina Jolie; a home run!

I have to object to the assertion that Marion Cotillard will not get another chance at an Oscar.
Rent A Good Year and see her in a light comedy/drama and note her presence on screen. She is like Juliette Binoche — a powerful actress who can do so much with her face, tell whole stories without a word, and have a face you do not tired of watching in closeup for an entire movie.
What she did in La Vie en Rose was a tour de force and if you see her in something else you have an even greater appreciation for the posture, the mannerisms, the different facial expressions that are not hers but the character’s. To be able to act as she has in La Vie en Rose is to be able to do anything. We have not seen the last of this extraordinary actress — thankfully!

Somehow, Angie and Brad’s popularity in Hollywood (sorry, Get Real, they are soooo well-liked, check out the Critic’s Choice Awards when everyone couldn’t keep away from saying hello at every commercial), talented, and have full, meaningful lives that are making changes for the better all over the world — all this sets some people’s personal self-esteem issues soooo on edge that there is clearly weirdness drawn out by them.
And then you have Cliniqua, and some other fans, who are just as loony and every post is filled with spite and anger and think everything is some sort of contest and attempt to smash other people. You have the fans who can’t ignore a troll to save their life, yet complain that trolls, who they are feeding and who are laughing at them for taking the bait EVERY TIME, are constantly present. Why wouldn’t they be, with such fools to play with?
And if anyone even hints at anything other than idolatrous praise, you have people here going nuts over it.
Sheesh. I love Angie and Brad and admire them both immensely, but this is why I’m in the email group instead. All the pictures, discussions, and fun without the idiocy. Have at it, folks.
Much to the chagrin of Jolie-Pitt haters, both Angie and Brad have a very healthy, long and powerful movie careers ahead of them. You just have to pray that their movies after movies aren’t good, that they won’t generate any Oscar buzz, and just close your eyes to their one and every spectacular red carpets looking gorgeous together. Their beautiful pictures together, and with the family will be staring at your face at every supermarket you go. It’s tough for you, I can imagine and PITY you all LOL
What is remarkable about Angelina’s performance in A Mighty Heart is that there were no rehearsals, no re-takes to get this or that part of the character or face or voice right. Winterbottom shot it like a documentary - and went with what was essentially the first take. All the actors have to be totally in character and focussed when the camera was on. I remember reading that the camera was on for long stretches of time.
Angelina describes some of what happened here:
Angelina, how did you get comfortable with Michael Winterbottom? I mean, the level of trust you must have had in your director to do a movie like “A Mighty Heart,” with so much emotion in it, must’ve been very high.
Jolie: I was comfortable when Mariane [Pearl] was comfortable. But I wasn’t so comfortable the first day of shooting, when I realized his style was so unbelievably raw. There is often no rehearsal, no one saying “cut.” For example, you have three different rooms, and we would go into one room and we’d be talking, say our five lines, and he’d film us. Then I’d go pee, and I’d come out, and the camera was still on. So I’d think, “OK …” Then I’d say my five lines again, and that would turn into 10 more minutes of talking, and then someone would go get something from the kitchen and I’d go to my bedroom, and he’d follow me and he just wouldn’t leave. It was really odd. But it became just the most perfect way to shoot that film. It was chaos in that moment. It was very intimate, and my big fear was that something horrible might happen and the camera would be like this. [She gestures as though there's a camera right in her face] But everybody was absolutely connected in every single moment. Even when we’d have lunch, we’d have it together at the table, or we’d all go for a walk together. We were just always present in the film. And so as an actor it brought me back to loving acting, and that was just great. But he does cross a line. One day one of the girls got sick and threw up, and he said, “Next time, tell us.” So he can be a little crazy. But I absolutely adore him.

Nominees will be announced Tuesday, but will they have a ceremony to attend if the writers strike persists?

The tentative settlement reached this week between the Directors Guild and producers bolstered hopes that talks would resume in the writers strike, but it wasn’t enough to relieve the queasy reality settling on Hollywood that the Academy Awards may go the way of the celebrity-free ratings downer that was Sunday’s Golden Globes.
However, Gilbert Cates, producer of the award telecast, remains adamant that on Feb. 24 there will be a red carpet outside the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood and an Oscar telecast on ABC despite the Writers Guild of America strike and the threat of a boycott by George Clooney, Angelina Jolie and the rest of the Screen Actors Guild. He hinted that he might not need actors onstage.

it was a great roundtable, just entertaining and insightful enough. like someone said before George and James talked more than their share but it was funny and probably needed, otherwise I get the feeling the rest would have been sitting there fidgeting in silence. Angie probably spoke the perfect amount, while Daniel could have afforded to speak more, considering his reputation. Also, Ellen and Marion were relatively reserved which is fine because they’re not such big names, however whenever the spoke it was genuinely interesting.
Also a curious point to be made is that most of the information revealed about Angie and her personal life came from George (talking about Brad and Pakistan) or the moderator (talking about Brad last time and how they use the spotlight for good). So its not as if people can claim that Angie is famewhoring.
p.s. kind of random but I like how a previous poster was making all of these objective evaluations about the roundtable, but then randomly mentions in the middle that Angie has the biggest chest of the three women present—cracked me up :D

FRIDAY NIGHT: Paramount’s 2008 is off to a spectacular start. The J.J. Abrams-produced Cloverfield has delivered a monster opening day of an estimated $18.25M, and it will easily coast to both the all-time January 3-Day record and the all-time 4-Day MLK weekend record. The Friday number is a tough call because there’s no clear answer about where Paramount will add Thursday post-midnight sneak preview business. That means that there’s a slightly larger margin of error in my Early Friday Estimate than usual.
The new company Overture has disappointed with its first release, Mad Money. With a cast that includes Oscar winner Diane Keaton, Oscar nominee Queen Latifah and the increasingly creepy Katie Holmes, the caper/heist comedy managed only $2.25M on Friday, and it’ll stumble to an estimated $8.2M 4-day, only no. 7 for the period.

As for ‘fans’ picking and choosing when Angelina should be nominated for an Oscar… gimme a break. Her performance as Marianne Pearl is strong enough for an Oscar nomination. How priggish of some of you to turn up your noses at the prospect that she may be recognized for her effort.
I think that Angelina deserves a nomination and even an Oscar for her role in AMH; however, if she’s in competition with Page, Cotillard, and Christie, and Blanchett, and somehow lose, it will be disappointing, but not devastating. All of these actresses portrayed the different facets of women beautifully. That should be among the criterion used to judge performances, not disappointing personal lives.
Anyone coasting on pity or being pathetic needs to hit up Jerry Springer or something.

Angie won 3 consecutive GGs, 2 SAGs, 1 Oscar, and other awards before the age of 25. I don’t think there is any other actor (male or female) who can claim that honor.
I think she is the female Marlon Brando or Jack Nicholson. She has always been in demand but has the luxury of choosing when and what she wanted to do. Not all actors can say that. Angie is an icon - Hollywood knows that and is proud to have her.
Angie’s talent always makes her bigger than mere tabloid headlines. There is substance behind her, not like Paris Hilton, Jessica Simpson, Britney Spears, etc. This is even more remarkable when you realize she is only 32 which is only a few years older than PH, JS, BS.

#330, no it’s more simple than that. Women carry the child and so they go and ask the woman. The woman will know her bodily changes before her husband and women don’t always jump to tell their partners until they are sure. Photographers go to try and watch for the wife’s baby bump, they don’t scout to find the next time they can catch the husband in an interview to ask him. They do that with the wife. She will know before the husband does, especially in the early stages, and plus it’s much easier for the husband to just say “I don’t know” and get away with it because it’s perfectly plausible–he might not know. He isn’t the one pregnant.
Plus, they’re both stars in their own right, so there’s no case of “asking the bigger name”. I could see why someone would ask Matt Damon if his wife is pregnant, rather than his wife, because she is not an actress, and only well known through him. I’m sure we care more about whatever the bigger name or more relevant star has to say, but that isn’t the case here.

We all have opinions (biased or otherwise) but the critics, nominations and accolades speak for themselves. And I’m speaking of TAOJJ and AMH. They are talented actors/producers.

I know some people here are not huge fans of Georgie and I respect that. But I like him and I like how he gets out there and wants to do decent things and isn’t afraid to speak up. While I have never thought he was some great actor he has a really good screen presence and pulls off his roles well enough. I haven’t seen Michel Clayton. And I HATED that hillbilly movie.
I guess our personal opinions of people really do color how we interpret things. I saw this excerpt above as George jumping in to protect Angie and veer the question away from the paps’ invasion of Angie’s personal life and refocusing the question specifically on Angie and Brad’s humanitarian work - Angie might have been more modest about bringing up her good works but George made that easier for her by first discussing that work with a specific example and relieving Angie of even having to discuss it if she didn’t want to. For all we know, George knew that Angie didn’t want to discuss personal matters like that or get into her celebrity during a discussion on acting. In the Newsweek article George is quoted backstage as saying to Angie, “Let’s don’t go out there.“ Angie jokingly points to two nonactors and replies, “Let’s send them out instead.“
All that just to say there are many ways to interpret behavior. Though I enjoy George I will admit that on paper it does seem like he talks a lot at the Roundtable and seems to take over. But I haven’t watched the video and I wasn’t there so I haven’t seen the dynamic among all the actors. George is a leader, personality wise. So, it seems, is McAvoy. I think it’s more about that than an ego thing. You have a number of people who seem a bit intimidated (Cotillard and Page) and Day Lewis who isn’t exactly Mr. Personality. So, in all fairness to George sometimes the joking lubricates the flow of conversation and puts people at ease. And there was an audience, I believe, so, hey, they’re entertainers. The defense rests. Ha Ha. (where are people getting those emoticons from?)
On a personal note, a relative of mine was the gf of the best friend of George’s cousin (Miguel Ferrar) - talk about third hand gossip - and she only had nice things to say about George and how he treated people. She also said he was always very funny. That was quite a while ago but take it for what it is or isn’t.
As people here probably already know, Daniel’s wife, Rebecca Miller (Arthur Miller’s daughter) wrote and is set to direct a Plan B movie soon. It will star Robin Wright soon-not-to-be Penn and is set to co-star Julianne Moore and Wynona Rider. So I imagine Daniel will get to know the JP’s more in the near future. So the idea of a movie for DDL and Jolie isn’t that far fetched.
Oscar Nomination is on Jan 22. I can’t wait. I am sure Angie will be nominated.

LOS ANGELES - Striking Hollywood writers could begin informal talks with studio chiefs as early as next week in an effort to end a two-month walkout that has hobbled the entertainment industry, according to a person familiar with the bargaining strategy of the writers union.

Word of the possible break in the stalemate came Friday, a day after the Directors Guild of America announced a tentative contract deal, and studio heads urged the Writers Guild of America to join in talks that could lead to the resumption of formal negotiations that broke off Dec. 7.
The Writers Guild is prepared to sit down with executives such as Robert Iger, CEO of The Walt Disney Co., who participated in similar informal talks with directors, said the person who was not authorized to publicly comment and asked for anonymity.
The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which represents studios, said it had no comment on the possible start of informal talks.
In its tentative deal with producers, the Directors Guild resolved new-media compensation issues that are also central to the Writers Guild dispute, including compensation for movie and TV projects delivered over the Internet.
In a joint statement Thursday, top executives from eight major companies, including Fox, Paramount Pictures, The Walt Disney Co., CBS Corp., Sony Pictures Entertainment, Warner Bros., MGM and NBC Universal called on the Writers Guild to join in the kind of informal talks that preceded the directors’ negotiations.
The executives said the deal with directors established a precedent for the industry’s creative talent to “participate financially in every emerging area of new media.”
Officials at the Writers Guild were waiting to receive a copy of the directors’ tentative pact and evaluate how it fits in with what writers are seeking.
The agreement gives the directors union jurisdiction over programs produced for distribution on the Internet. It also provides for residuals paid on a percentage of distributors’ gross — also a key Writers Guild proposal.
“I think the DGA deal is good. Very good. For writers, for directors, for the future,” writer-producer John Wells, whose credits include “ER” and “The West Wing,” said in a letter posted online.
Some out-of-work writers said they were heartened by the directors’ pact. But they tempered their optimism about a possible end to the walkout by writers, which has halted work on dozens of TV shows, has disrupted movie production, turned the usually star-studded Golden Globes show into a mundane news conference and has threatened the upcoming Academy Awards ceremony.
Screenwriter David Garrett said new-media elements of the directors’ deal appeared to reflect at least some of what the Writers Guild is seeking.
“I think it’s important the producers have acknowledged the unions need jurisdiction over the Internet,” Garrett said. “There can’t be any argument about that when they come back (to talks) with the Writers Guild. Then the amounts can be negotiated.”
The deal might jump-start formal negotiations, writer Steven L. Sears said.
“Everybody is hoping it’s a great deal and will help bring the producers back to the table,” he said as he walked a picket line with about 40 other people outside NBC studios in Burbank.
Still, he said the majority of Directors Guild members don’t face the same contract issues that are key for writers.
Negotiations broke down after the studio alliance demanded the Writers Guild take unionization of reality and animation shows and other issues off the table.
In Utah, Robert Redford told The Associated Press that an agreement between studios and writers could be imminent.
