Watched Oprah….

I missed her interview with Daniel Day Lewis and Laura Linney, but caught the rest of the interview. Some observations…

Ruby Dee - Man, she looked so lovely. She’s in her 80s but it certainly was not the Gloria Stuart-Titanic looking 80s. Ruby was great. She talked about how the slap scene was a collaborative effort with Denzel and that she said, deep down, she was proud because she was able to ’spank Lucas’ because he deserved it. She talked about how she grew up in Harlem and watched good, honest men being denied opportunities to be businessmen because of racism, but it doesn’t serve as an excuse for people to turn to a life a crime. They talked about Ossie Davis and Oprah said that he engineered this from Heaven (gag). Ruby said that since his death, she has worked more than in previous periods in her life and she thought that Ossie was watching out for her. She also said that this nom is proof that living long enough can produce many surprises. Loved her.

Then, it was Casey’s turn. Casey was there, via satellite. Oprah congratulated him on the nod; he seemed sheepish and shy. Then Oprah asked him a pretty stupid question… ‘What was it like to work with Mr. Pitt?’ I guess she was trying to be cute or something Initially, Casey gave a sarcastic answer, like he didn’t know him or something, but then he reminded Oprah that he worked with Brad in the Oceans movie and described him as being a great guy. Casey was more descriptive, but honestly, I can’t remember more than that. Then Oprah spent the majority of the interview talking about Gone, Baby, Gone and Ben Affleck - asking about their working relationship and stuff. Eventually, she returned to the Oscar topic, asking him how he found out. He said that he knew that if he was nominated, his phone would start ringing at 5 in the morning; the phone rang, but he said he doesn’t get out of bed unless his kids are jumping on his head, or something like that. He said that while the nom was an honor, he was leery about the pomp that’s ahead of him, mainly because the red carpet is not his thing.

Amy Ryan - I was kinda surprised; she was really pretty. She looked pretty rough in Gone, Baby, Gone, but she came across as a doll during the interview. They talked about mastering the Boston accent and whether she has picked her gown yet.

Marion Cotillard - very pretty; the Roundtable didn’t do her justice. She was very gracious and appreciative of her nomination. She talked about how her Golden Globe was delivered to her by her hotel’s bellhop. Oprah asked if she was disappointed that she didn’t go to the GG; Marion said that with all of the great things that is happening, she doesn’t have time to feel disappointed; she added that she intends to enjoy every bit of this experience. Oprah said, like DDL, her performance was transformative.

I don’t know… Oprah seems to have a hard-on for Ben Affleck for some reason. When Ellen Page, Jennifer Garner, and Diablo Cody was on for Juno, Oprah spent more time than necessary asking Jennifer Garner about Ben. BTW, Jen Garner came across as a doll too. Anyway, IMO, Oprah wasted a golden opportunity by not delving deeper with Diablo; Juno may be a one-off, but then again, it may not be and Diablo’s presence was pretty unique and refreshing.

I also watched the Oprah Oscar special..Imagine how awkward it would have been if Jolie was nominated and Oprah aka X’s friend, is inteviewing her post-Jolie-Pitt.

But the news didn’t stop there - X17Online.com took the story a step further, claiming the actress is carrying twins.
When contacted by Access Hollywood, a rep for Angelina refused to comment on the rumor.
“I am not commenting on an unsubstantiated rumor from a tabloid photo agency,” the rep said.
Brad and Angelina have four children - Maddox, 6, Pax, 4, Zahara, 3, and Shiloh, 1.

Reporting on the Dead

Since we learned of actor Heath Ledger’s untimely death on Tuesday afternoon, the basic fact is that until additional tests have been conducted, the autopsy is incomplete and inconclusive as to why this 28-year-old man died. That’s what we know.

Let’s get to what we don’t know: his death was a tragic accident, or something to the contrary. Until we know for sure, I think the media should just shut their mouths and stop all the speculation that’s been running rampant.

This man has a two-year-old daughter. His family is going through the worst time in their lives. Their hearts are broken, they’re numb, they can’t understand what’s going on right now. Michelle Williams is trying to figure out how to explain to their little girl that she will never see her daddy again. It’s heartbreaking, tragic, and it’s being used to fuel our never ceasing desire to eavesdrop on the lives of others.

Please let them grieve in privacy and dignity for a few days at least for goodness sake. As far as I’m aware, Heath Ledger never did anything but conduct himself in the most respectful and charismatic way. He gave us exactly what we asked of him — good entertainment and our $12 worth when we sat our butts in the seats of a movie theater. He made his living in the entertainment business, but he purposely chose not to make his life that way. He was by all accounts a normal guy in every way, a regular dad who was often photographed walking down the streets of Manhattan or Brooklyn with his daugther, Matilda.

The scene outside his apartment on the night Ledger died made me sick to my stomach. People gawking and waiting around for a body bag to be removed. I have been at similar scenes in my work as an assistant district attorney. And let me tell you, if you don’t have to be there, you wouldn’t want to be. It’s morbid. Someone who was loved is in that bag… and trust me it takes more than a minute to get used to that.

And when actress Michelle Williams and her daughter arrived home in Brooklyn, the scene was just as bad. Instead of being allowed to enter her home in privacy, she had to endure the flashbulbs of the paparazzi waiting to snap the money shot. How she explained that to her child through her grief is something I hope never to experience.

Might I suggest that we in the media, instead of reporting on the dead based on gossip, rumor, innuendo and anonymous sources, choose to honor this man’s memory based on his talent and the good taste we all should be exercising. My heart goes out to the family of Heath Ledger.
