OlderHayden Panettiere to Lead Whale Rally
Hayden Panettiere will lead a rally against a resumption of commercial whaling at 1 p.m. this Sunday, January 27, in Washington, D.C.’s Dupont Circle. The event kicks off a whirlwind trip to the Nation’s Capital for Hayden, who will later speak with policymakers and students to encourage increased whale protection.
The 18-year-old Heroes star is a spokesperson for the Save the Whales Again! campaign, which is calling on the United States to stand up for whales at the International Whaling Commission and take diplomatic and economic action against whaling countries. After the rally, she will speak at Georgetown University. On Monday, she will meet with representatives from the embassies of Japan, Norway and Iceland to question their outdated whaling practices.
“Whales face increasing threats from climate change, ship strikes, entanglement in nets, and chemical and noise pollution, yet Japan, Norway and Iceland continue to kill them in increasing numbers,” Hayden said. “I am looking forward to talking with officials who actually make and carry out our policies, as well as fellow young people who will be voting in the upcoming election—I want our voice to be heard.”
On Tuesday, Hayden will speak at a 1 p.m. press conference hosted by House of Representatives Natural Resources Committee Chair Nick Rahall (D-WV). She will be joined by Rahall and Senator John Kerry (D-MA) in urging the US Government to reinstate its former leadership role protecting whales from commercial slaughter. An evening reception with Members of Congress and their staff is the final stop on her trip.

She’s an inspiration. She’s inspired me to at least do something for other people thats important. This matter is important, no matter what people say. Whales are a big part of our lives and atmosphere. She’s doing something good for the world and she’s amazing for that.

I’m all for protecting the whales and I admire Hayden’s passion for and committment to the cause. I would happily protest with her and sign a petition if asked me to. One thing I would not do is sit and be lectured to by an 18-year-old.

I must agree with Helena and Mark. Whaling is indeed a cruel and truly outdatet practice, but i don’t think it will help the cause if a barely outgrown girl speaks to the ambassadors. I mean for christ sake, I don’t think Norway cares what USA have to say (one of the richest and liberal countries in the world, they have never liked America), and Iceland that make their living of whaling..

Is is bull**** from A to Z. First of the whales are not an endangered species. Last year Norway killed about 1000 of the type of whale they’re allowed to kill. And there’s between 150 and 200.000 in the Atlantic. A tip of advice ms. Panettiere. Reed report from the scientist working on the subject and get involved with something worthwhile like HIV vaccination for African children, world hunger etc. You’re only making a fool of yourself and any enlightened person who has looked into the whole whaling case and read a report or two will agree. Better luck next time.

saving the whales IS worthwhile. I think YOU need to do your research into the current scarcity of the whales. They are an endangered species and even if they aren’t they sure are majestic and intelligent creatures and helping them isn’t any less important than helping people.

Those of you with Hayden, what she is doin is a good thing yes, but instead of fighting on the web go out and help her, Help with anything you can weather its whaling, war, starvation, animal rights just do it! Those of you agianst her, You need a lesson in sympathy! The whales feel pain just as much as you do! Any animal feels pain just as much as you do! Whaling is bad…that is it! There are other sources of food that dont hurt the environment at all! And the people talking about what she wears, there is such a thing as FAKE LEATHER and NON-ANIMAL TESTED MAKE-UP. Perhaps her car is a hybrid , who knows. Stop looking at the flaws and start looking at what matters.
