Heath Ledger’s father, Kim, just released a statement on behalf of the Ledger family in response to the Medical Examiner’s findings:
“We remain humble as parents and a family, among millions of people worldwide who may have suffered the tragic loss of a child. Few can understand the hollow, wrenching, and enduring agony parents silently suffer when a child predeceases them. Today’s results put an end to speculation, but our son’s beautiful spirit and enduring memory will forever remain in our hearts. While no medications were taken in excess, we learned today the combination of doctor-prescribed drugs proved lethal for our boy. Heath’s accidental death serves as a caution to the hidden dangers of combining prescription medication, even at low dosage.
“Our family enjoyed an extremely happy two week visit with Heath just prior to the New Year. Those recent precious days will stay with us forever. We as a family feel privileged to have some of his amazing magic moments captured in film. To most of the world Heath was an actor of immeasurable talent and promise. To those who knew him personally, Heath was a consummate artist whose passions also included photography, music, chess and directing. We knew Heath as a loving father, as our devoted son, and as a loyal and generous brother and friend.
“We treasure our beautiful granddaughter Matilda (to our dear Michelle) as well as an unbelievably wonderful network of close friends, forever, around the world. Families rarely experience the uplifting, warm and massive outpouring of grief and support as have we, from every corner of the planet. This has deeply and profoundly touched our hearts and lives. We are eternally grateful.
“At this moment we respectfully request the worldwide media allow us time to grieve privately, without the intrusions associated with press and photography.”

Not everyone’s a pharmacologist. We all don’t know if a two drugs together will act synergistically or have a lethal outcome.
His family is very eloquent, my heart goes out to them. I really hope people will give them the space and privacy they deserve.
When you mix medications it is usually an accident when death occurs. People who try to kill themselves will take large doses of drugs. none of the drugs in his sytem were enough to kill him. It was the combination that kill him which means accidental. Unless he was a pharmacist or chemist he would not be aware of it. How many people really read all the warning labels and truly understand them? Unless you are a medical professional few of us do.

an accident is something thats unintentional. so yes, you can ‘accidentally’ take a legal cocktail of drugs if you’re an idiot, like heath. he probably had to much cocaine in his system to know what he was doing. they’ll never admit that though cos its a classic hollywood whitewash. the medical examiner was probably heavily bribed.

What really irks me is wtf is wrong with celebs that they don’t understand the dangers of mixing prescription medication and overdosing. I mean, this is just common sense, no disrespect intended toward Heath, but seriously!!?? How many times now has this happened to HW stars and yet apparently nobody learns from it?!
I understand Heath’s father remarking on the “hidden dangers” of mixing prescribed medications but in all honesty I don’t think the dangers are hidden…..like I said, common sense. This was a careless death and should not have happened. I don’t think Heath did it on purpose but he could and should have been more careful. People need to pay attention…..especially HW so it seems.
In any case, Kim’s words are beautiful and the situation is tragic. I pray that his family is able to pull through this together and able to smile at his memories without tears of sorrow. Heath was a great one. :-(
medical labels are for the public and are easy to understand unless youre an idiot…like heath. thats why they tell you to read the instructions carefully (or s-l-o-w-l-y if you’re an eejit) and not to do a ‘tom cruise bartender’ job and starting mixing cocktails up.

You are right. But doctors ALWAYS ask if you are taking any other medication before prescribing something…..for a reason. If you lie you are scr*ewed, and if you don’t know that taking more than two different prescribed medications may pose a danger then you are careless and extremely uninformed. Which in Heath’s case proved fatal.
I don’t think he did it on purpose but he d*mn sure could have been more careful. You NEVER mix prescribed meds before asking a professional. H*ll, you aren’t even supposed to mix over the counter unless you ask a pro first!

The FDA is pulling all sorts of cough/cold medicine because of accidental overdose deaths of children.
Mixing medications is something a lot of people do with the assumption an over-the-counter medicine is benign (or it would be regulated).
Heath Ledger is hardly the first person to take an over-the-counter medication and not realize it could be dangerous when mixed with something else he was taking. And he isn’t the first person to die from it, either.
Calling him an idiot for it is cruel (and a sad attempt to outrage people, apparently for the thrill of upsetting others by being rude).
It’s sad all around.
I have a lot of respect for Heath, his family, and Michelle. They’ve kept it private.
The cause of death was “acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam and doxylamine,” spokeswoman Ellen Borakove said in a statement.
The drugs are the generic names for the painkiller OxyContin, the anti-anxiety drugs Valium and Xanax, and the sleep aids Restoril and Unisom. Hydrocodone is a prescription painkiller.
There you have it; a druggie, albeit a prescription one at the time. I imagine if there was another pam or lam or mine or done he would have taken it. I mean you’ve got to use everything at your disposal, right? No half measures. (I have to add that I suspect only habitual users of illegal drugs would be taking this many legal drugs at the same time; they get to the point in which taking drugs is their life).

I think this sums up everything. A tragic loss of a wonderful actor and loving father, Heath will be missed by many.

I feel quite bad for the whole celebrity lifestyle. I think sometimes the whole spotlight gets to some of them to the point where even if they do have kids, they still intentionally try to hurt themselves. Please note I’m not talking about Heath, just in general.

For all of you dumbasses who don’t know, drugs takes weeks to clear out of your system, just because they found those drugs in his system doesn’t mean he had recently taken them. It is called an accident, because there was not enough of one drug to kill him, but a mixture of all of them that had a lethal reaction.

I guess I am junkie according to you because I have four of those drugs you named in my medicine cabinet. I need the Valium for airplane flights , I actually held up a plane from taking off because I started to panic. Xanax for after I was robbed at gunpoint, I was little afraid to go out of my home for a while. And the sleep aids well to sleep, let me get myself into rehab. The funny thing is after taking the Xanax I couldn’t sleep, hence the need for the sleep aids. So I had some of thise drugs in my system at one time. And my physician and therapist were well aware that I had all of these drugs.
I don’t have oxycotin but I do have some Tylenol with codeine in my medicine cabinet. Shoot I need to get me a bunk right next to Amy Winehouse.
i noticed that some people are more invested in being right than accepting the facts presented to them. those that were so sure it was a suicide will continue saying that was the case. those that say he overdosed on illegal drugs will continue saying it’s an overdose. some people just want to be right and will always hate being proven wrong.

He hadn’t been able to sleep and was absolutely drained from working on the Dark Knight. The exhaustion can make a person desperate and extremely lacking in judgement as far as their welfare is concerned. They just want relief. The overload of symptoms and drugs to treat each one can make one temporarily very reckless, cognatively impaired, groggy and out-of-it. That’s why these accidents happen. And yes, famous rich people persuade doctors, usually more than one, to give them another pill for whatever.
Heath Ledger no doubt was guilty of having impaired judgement, being reckless and feeling desperate for relief. I’ve suffered from exhaustion and I know how debilitating mentally and physically it can be.
Heath was a fine actor and will blow us all away in the Dark Knight. He paid a very high price for his art…Death. Have some respect for the tragic end to a potentially great artist.

But most of the time you can simply detect by their appearances and behavior if they do drugs. I,for one observe their eyes. No doubt this is tragic for his family because its also guilt that they were not able to help him or witness the signs or figure out why he’s not sleeping or why their son is unhappy. Doctors, always ask you “are you taking any medications and what are they” before they prescribe you any medications. They do this for a reason, because mixing medications can be lethal.
Doctors make mistakes in prescribing medications all the time even when they know what you are taking. They just don’t bother to read the file…after all, time is money. It’s true. Doctors are only fallible human beings, not gods, computers or saints. Fortunately, not too many people die as a result. You can bet your life that all the doctors that have prescribed Heath’s meds in the last year, are scrambling to see what is in their records about his treatment, etc.
I got a word of advice to all who genuinely mourn Heath Ledger here…

Ever sine becoming a mum I have only one overriding ambition - that my 3 kids bury me. My heart oges out to them and to Matilda who will miss outon her obviously doting dad. So sad - such a waste of a great talent. i don’t drnk or take drugs but understand how this can happen without him being a druggie. I had my money on sleep apnea being involved but it is even more scary because it is actually easy to do easily if you are being tortured by insomnia. He was telling the world he couldn’t sleep. Read this article “Drugs that killed Heath Ledger Could be In Your Home” http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,328926,00.html So I went and had a look around my house. I have every one of them - the last one ‘doxylamine’ is in Mersyndol and Dozile - Some are prescription and some are not. They are speculating no one doctor would have prescribed them all but it happens over time. The opiates were contained in cough mixtures and pain killers. It is well documented he had the flu and he self medicated - something that is very easy to do without a drug problem. I am SOOOOOOO anti anti depressants - almost agree with the Scientologists on that - the human psyche is so strong and recovers but it doesn’t recover when it is masked by anti depressants. Perhaps short term after a big crisis ok but just to get the brain’s chemicals back into balance Also I know from experience a side effect of anti-depressants is sleep disturbance and I know the sleeping tablets don’t fix it. So say he’s on anti depressants - been on them for while. The sleep disturbance is really driving him crazy so he takes sleeping tablets (which I know doctors will prescribe whilst you are on anti deprressants). He has the flu so the cough mixture and has a migraine from the lack of sleep/flu stress of it all and voila a life snuffed out. You do it - you get to sleep and get over the headache but because it worked you do it again the next headache. You just want to sleep and get out of pain. The thing is that your body gets accustomed to the sleep inducing effects of these drugs so you take higher doses but even though they aren’t working as well they are still depressing the central nervous system and depress it enough and you are dead. Sure pills are the easy way but the doctors try to get you to take them. I know someone who went to a doctor for some advice on slowing down their drinking and the first thing he did was prescribe anti-depressants -the patient thought it was crazy and threw away the script but it is an all too easy roller coaster to get on. My dad went to the Chemist once to get a script filled and as she knew him she knew the BP tablets he was on and said “You can’t have these they are lethal with your BP tablets”. The doctor who prescribed them was very lucky the pharmacist had a brain. The saddest part is that if he had woken and realised he was in trouble or the masseuse had come an hour earlier he would be alive and well. So beware but also I have found the absolute cure all - no more headaches, no more insomnia and its drinking 2-3litres of water a day - dehydration causes heaps of problems.
