I had assumed this was a trip for UNHCR, but People quotes Trevor Neilson as saying it was on behalf of the State Department. Just reminds you how well respected Angie is amongst those who deal with foreign affairs.

Hollywood’s globe-trotting leading lady swooped into Baghdad on Thursday to highlight the plight of Iraqi refugees, gaining an audience with Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, the American Embassy said.

On her mission as a U.N. goodwill ambassador, Jolie also met with Iraqi migration officials to stress that there needs to be a coherent plan for the more than 2 million internally displaced Iraqis who are beginning to trickle back to their homes amid a recent lull in violence.
There’s lots of goodwill and lots of discussion, but there seems to be just a lot of talk at the moment,” Jolie said in excerpts of an interview aired on CNN.

Jolie mingled with American troops during lunch at a dining facility in the heavily guarded Green Zone, which houses the embassy and Iraqi government offices. She grabbed a red plastic tray at the mess hall, collected her lunch and sat at a long banquet table to eat her fork tines down, of course as flashbulbs from soldiers’ digital cameras lit up the wall behind her.

During the CNN interview, Jolie said the fate of Iraq will have an impact on the Middle East for years to come.

“And a big part of what it’s going to affect,” she said, “is how these people are returned and settled into their homes and their community and brought back together and whether they can live together and what their communities look like.”

I was thinking about the scum of paps following celebrities. I know there is a cry for new laws, why can’t we use the current laws to the fullest. There is a law about stalking celebs since the tv star of “mindy and mork was murdered by a stalker. Why can’t they use that law to stop the paps from stalking until another specific law can be enacted?

On the subject of using current laws to be used while specific laws are enacted, can’t the FBI investigate threats made to children such as in the baby of Charles Lindberg being kidnapped and killed be used to turn up the heat on all publications of any threat?

Angelina Jolie calls for aid to refugees on Iraq visit

BAGHDAD (AFP) — UN goodwill ambassador and Hollywood megastar Angelina Jolie visited Iraq on a humanitarian mission on Thursday and met top officials to demand help for people displaced by the war.

A scheduled press conference at the US embassy was cancelled, but the Oscar-winning actress gave an interview to CNN in which she said she wanted more to be done for Iraqi families driven from their homes.

“There are over two million displaced people and there never seems to be a real coherent plan to help them,” she said.

“There’s lots of goodwill and lots of discussion but there seems to be a lot of talk at the moment and a lot of pieces that need to be put together.”

The US embassy said Jolie travelled to Baghdad with Under Secretary of State for Global Affairs Paula Dobriansky “to discuss US humanitarian relief efforts for internally displaced persons and conflict victims.”

The trip, a statement said, is a follow-up to a visit by Jolie to the region six months ago and marks a “mission to support and implement joint solutions to assist Iraqi’s displaced population.”

The statement added that Jolie also met Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari and Immigration and Refugees Minister Abdel Samad Rahman Sultan.

She had lunch with American troops serving in Iraq after earlier meeting their top commander, General David Petraeus.

The actress also held talks in Baghdad’s fortified Green Zone with UN head of mission Staffan di Mistura and met a group of internally displaced people.

“Of the two million internally displaced, it’s estimated 58 percent are under 12 years old. It’s a very high number of people in a very, very vulnerable situation and a lot of young kids,” Jolie told CNN.

“So far, the different US officials I met with and different local people I’ve met with all have shared concerns, very, very strongly. They have spoken out about the humanitarian crisis, but there seems to be a block in.

“I don’t have the answers, but I know this is one thing that needs to be addressed and solved. (There needs) to be a real presence here to help count the people and register the people,” she added.

The actress, most famous for her roles in Hollywood hits “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” and “Mr and Mrs Smith,” said she would urge US and Iraqi officials to provide better security for UN refugee agency workers.

Currently the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has been unable to mount widespread aid operations within Iraq because of the daily violence that has wracked the country during its five-year-old war.

Jolie became a volunteer for the United Nations goodwill programme in 2001. She has campaigned on behalf of Iraqi refugees and has visited Iraq before.

In August 2007, she met some of the 1,200 Iraqis stranded on the border between Iraq and Syria and appealed for more international support for those affected by the conflict.

During that tour, Jolie left UNHCR officials to visit privately with US and other multinational forces based in the area.

The following month she launched a 150-million-dollar appeal by UNICEF, the UN’s fund for children, and the UNHCR to help educate one million children affected by the war.

Celebrities film, perform concerts, ect while pregnant. Nobody called Halle Berry or Jennifer a bad mother when they did publicity and toured while pregnant. Get a grip people. Hi Felinelilly!

This is a woman who obviously has great reserves of energy and stamina. She has to in order to work, take care of four young children, research and undertake U.N. missions. Many women like to sleep a lot during their first trimester and easily tire. Angelina just seems rejuvenated. No wonder Brad has his hands full trying to get her to slow down and just sit for a bit.

She’s breaking all the typical expectations and restrictions of “you shouldn’t do this” and “you can’t do that”. Clearly this is threatening to some who don’t like to see a woman unlimited by the self imposed restrictions. Maybe it makes them feel lazy or lesser beings.

I can freely admit that I don’t have her energy or fearlessness. But I rejoice in her spirit and accomplishments.She’s fierce!

All the protection in the world can’t prevent a suicide bomber from slipping through or a mortar attack. Workers who have been trusted for ages can all of a sudden reveal themselves to be terrorists. I’m not criticizing her for taking this risk because I think she is very brave and dedicated. Maybe I would have made the same decision to go but maybe not. That’s a very personal decision.

I wonder if that eavesdropping photographer in NOLA who thought he heard Burma actually heard Baghdad. He mentioned she was waiting for State Dept. clearance and I wondered why she would have needed that for Burma - I don’t think she would have. Of course, she needed clearance for a visit to Iraq especially since she went on a US escorted visit. So it seems this trip was being planned since before late December. If she is pregnant then the plans may have begun before she knew she was pregnant. If you’ll remember, her last Iraq in 2007 visit was six months in the planning.

It just makes me smile to read about her work. I hope she keeps inspiring others to live outside themselves.

This trip was probably planned months in advance so a little thing such as pregnancy wasn’t going to stop Angelina from going. She has to do what she must. Refugees aren’t gonna wait until she delivers her baby into the world. She had to strike while the iron was hot.

One can only guess how Brad must have been apprehensive in letting her go but kudos to him for not being a chauvinistic male to his beautiful and headstrong partner. They really are a true match for each other. They are so cool!

It is just fake concern for a possible pregnancy and you are right, there are military men there as well as Iraqi citizens who should be in our thoughts and prayers. The thing I like about AJ is she does not take sides in a political war but goes as a UN representative to talk about the plight of the refugees and the human cost of the war. Thanks for the post.

i do believe that the same people who are so concerned about a pregnant woman going to iraq are the same ones who say she isn’t pregnant. doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

This is what i love about Angelina. She create awareness in an unassuming way, simple and we get the message unlike some celebrity who spent million to raise a million. Those glitzy event and dress can cause permenant blindness to those who dont understand the real meaning of charity.

For those bashing Angie, I dare you. You go and see what is happening there. We sit in warm homes, with food, medical attention and don’t have the fears of being killed because of your “tribe” or religion. While Saddam was not in anyway a leader to be proud of, mass murder that he was, the one thing he did believe in was womens rights! Please do some research, see the rise in “honor” killings, the number of women that have lost property and businesses! It’s frightening. I know Angie is not there only to shine a light on womens issues, but she sure as heck can shine a BRIGHT light where most of the world see’s darkness because it doesn’t matter to them. We as women should applaud her going and bringing the media with her! Many of them would not cover the “human” story if not for her. Soldiers have come back and reported on the everyday persons suffering, we didn’t spend time writing discussing and being appalled! Angie’s visit will lend a human quality to what “the people” are going through. Hopefully it will make the world take notice and find some compassion in their hearts.

If she cares that little about an unborn child, maybe she should rethinkg having another. Very interesting article. Thanks for posting. Amanpour is someone that I admire also and follow her reports on CNN. There are many reporters, field workers and UN Relief works on the front lines making a difference and often not reported on. AJ is someone who has turned the spotlight away from herself onto causes and people that are often forgotten or overlooked in our tabloid society. She is a celebrity who is using her fame for good. It certainly draws people attention and get them talking about issues that they would otherwise ignore. Thanks again.

Thanks Maureen for posting this great article - I remember seeing an interview of Christiane Amanpour where she spoke about this time in her life and I was so impressed by her dedication and passion for both her family and her work. Men can father dozens of children but are never questioned about their choices in work or lifestyle (oh, unless they’re Brad Pitt of course!) I have certainly never criticized x for not having children. However, I most certainly have and will criticize her for LYING ABOUT WANTING CHILDREN WHEN SHE HAD NO INTENTION OF HAVING ANY UNTIL SHE WAS FINISHED WITH HER CAREER.

I actually believe Brad didn’t lie when he said that the lack of children wasn’t the reason for the divorce. I believe that it wasn’t that there was no children but that x LIED ABOUT WANTING CHILDREN with him, kept pushing out the time to try to have children, kep breaking her promises to start a family – which ended up with him being disillusioned and distrustful of x that was one of the true reasons for the divorce. When the trust and respect for your mate is gone, there is no meaningful marriage. Hence the divorce.

ITA with this nice post. AJ is a remarkable human being. She could’ve just write checks and attend glamorous fundraising and be done with it. But no, she goes to dangerous places because IMO she really wants to see the real condition of the refuges and asses it for herself. She is passionate about it and believed in the cause. I know whoever keeps posting this FAKE QUOTE from Brad is doing it because they think it’s funny to smack trolls in the face with it…BUT…the fact is. IT’S A FAKE. BRAD DID NOT SAY THIS and repeatedly posting it here makes US look like the pack of loons people accuse us of being. If Brad had really called a spade a spade and said his marriage a “farcical merger” the headlines would be about X’s nervous breakdown and not Brit’s!

The rest of the quotes in the post did come from legitimae interviews and including this passage totally negates what Brad has said about his past. He was much more subtle in his put-down of X and the nearly 7 years he wasted with her. I realize the trolls don’t understand subtlety…but come on…aren’t we better than they are? We don’t have to create fake quotes to make our point. The fact that Brad is where he is and living the life he is is all the rebuttal we need to make.
