Three months ago, my best friend went to a job interview and the interviewer asked her if she had a child since she was married…she replied that she could gave birth to her first child in a minute to the shocked man who couldn’t believe that she was heavily pregnant under her jacket ! She gave birth to my goddaughter three days later !
——————–
Cool! But BTW, that is an illegal question under the Equal Opportunity Employment act. I hope your friend got the job she wanted.

————-

In many european countries it is not illigal. And no she didn’ have the job at first but her cv was kept in the database and she was eventually called for an internship 6 months later.

I’ve been reviewing past threads. WOW! Their lives are amazing. Some of my favorite moments are when AJ spoke at the CGI, wrote in the Economist, Brad taking his family around his New Orleans project, date night in Prague, Toy shopping with the kids, NYC, Angies trips to Iraq and Afganistan and sooo many hot red carpets. Swoooon!
I’m so happy to be a fan.

$20 million gift planned for Gentilly
Foundation has purchased land for 20 new homes, to get started
Thursday, February 21, 2008
By Kate Moran

The founder of Barnes & Noble bookstores will spend $20 million from his private foundation to build and renovate homes in devastated Gentilly, an initiative that will match and possibly exceed the investment Brad Pitt’s charity has made in the Lower 9th Ward.

Leonard Riggio and his wife, Louise, plan to begin by building 20 new houses in the Filmore section of Gentilly that will be donated to displaced homeowners. In return, those owners will surrender their flooded property to the Riggio Foundation to be rebuilt or torn down for the benefit of another marooned Gentilly resident.

Project Home Again, as the effort will be called, should ultimately return about 100 households to the neighborhood, according to people familiar with the project. Gentilly had a high concentration of elderly residents before the storm, and neighborhood leaders said many did not have the wherewithal to repair flooded, slab-style houses.

The Riggio initiative is only the latest example of how private philanthropy has connected storm victims with resources when the public sector could not. It began when Wal-Mart trucked supplies to the Gulf Coast before the federal government did and continued with Pitt and a partner, Steve Bing, who have each offered a $5 million matching grant to rebuild homes in the 9th Ward.

“It’s a situation where the private sector, through its generosity, is stepping in to help people who were left behind by the Road Home and their insurance companies,” said Councilwoman Cynthia Hedge-Morrell, whose district includes Gentilly.

Riggio was traveling Wednesday and was not available for comment, said Mary Ellen Keating, a spokeswoman for Barnes & Noble. He will unveil details about the project at a news conference in Gentilly on Tuesday.

The new houses will be built on a vacant piece of land bounded by St. Bernard Avenue, Mandolin Street, Owens Boulevard and Wellington Avenue. City property records show the Riggio Foundation bought land in that area for $650,000 in the middle of last year.

Designers have drawn up three templates for the houses, which will be elevated eight feet above ground and include parking spaces underneath, according to people involved in the project. The architects will also incorporate various “green” design elements, including thermal wraps that will make the houses inexpensive to heat and cool.

Laurie Watt, communications director for the Gentilly Civic Improvement Association, said only a quarter of the residents in her neighborhood have managed to return home since Katrina. The area has a distinctly gap-toothed appearance.

She said the project has the potential to energize development in the area.

“New Orleanians have a strong sense of loyalty to home,” Watt said. “I think this is going to be just terrific for those who are left out there and don’t know what to do. The ripple effect could be tremendous.”

The Riggio Foundation has assets worth about $78 million, according to its most recently available tax return. The foundation appears to donate primarily to charities in New York, where it is based, including the Dia Art Foundation.

The 2005 tax return shows the foundation made several contributions of $1 million but none above that amount.

David Fincher Attached to Direct Black Hole

Black Hole Graphic Novel

After finishing up The Curious Case of Benjamin Button with Brad Pitt, Fight Club and Zodiac director David Fincher could be heading into Black Hole next. The film is an adaptation of a graphic novel by Charles Burns about mutant teenagers in the 1970s, but the best part about it is that a script for the project was originally written by Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary, the same pair that teamed up for Beowulf. Just listen to that line-up: Fincher directing a a graphic novel adaptation by Gaiman and Avary. This has instantly shot to the top of a long list of highly anticipated movies in development, but unfortunately it might mean that Fincher won’t be directing the sci-fi flick Rendezvous with Rama for quite some time.

The kinder side of celebrities
Philanthropy an important task in Hollywood

Although celebrities are mostly known for the glitz and glamour of red carpet events, movie premieres and awards shows, many of them have ventured outside this stereotype.

They use their money for more than just material possessions, contributing their money to charity and using their status and fame to support good causes.

Angelina Jolie is an example of a celebrity that has gone beyond the set of a movie, stretching her influence to several countries around the world.

Jolie has been the Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for refugees since 2001, and is currently on a U.S government mission with the state department to Iraq. Jolie is there to learn about the refugees and displaced people all around the country and help implement a plan to get these people settled and back into their homes.

According to the UN refugee agents’ Web site, Jolie has traveled to Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Balkans and the North Caucasus to raise awareness and support for refugees.

Jolie has visited more than 20 countries and regions, meeting with refugees and field workers.

The actress spoke with these refugees and listened to their stories, recording her experience in journals along the way that can be viewed on the UNHCR’s international Web site.

Jolie is an active participant during World Refugee Day on June 20 every year, hosting events and speaking to the media about her concern for refugees. On World Refugee Day in 2006, Jolie appeared on a 30-second public service announcement urging people not to forget about refugees. Her plea was aired all around the world.

IPS students earn credit; help Katrina victims
By FRANK KONKEL

IONIA - Students from Ionia High School teacher Angela Anagnost’s sophomore English class are doing a little extra to earn credit this trimester.

Instead of reading a sequence of novels or completing a plethora of book reports, Anagnost decided to combine those tried and true Language Arts activities with something a little different.

Anagnost’s class is undertaking a service learning project in conjunction with the Make-it-Right Foundation to raise money for Hurricane Katrina victims.

“I came up with the organization, but the students came up with the ways to donate and raise money for it,” said Anagnost, who conjured the idea after frequent snow days made traditional reading/writing assignments exceedingly difficult. “This is a big project, but the students are organizing it.”

Students have already raised $400 for the Make It Right Foundation, collecting donations from businesses, community members and distributing donation cans throughout the high school.

“These donations go directly to help Hurricane Katrina victims,” said student Travis Woodrow. “We’ve only been doing it since last week, and we’re doing good so far.”

Anagnost’s class expects to do even better. They’ve set a goal of collecting $2,000 by March 5 and have two events in the near future they hope will help equal or surpass that total.

On Thursday, Feb. 28 at 5:30 p.m., the high school will host a Gatorball tournament. It’ll be $3 to play or watch. Following that event on March 1, the high school will host a dance from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. The cost is $5 at the door. All proceeds from both events go directly toward the Make-It-Right Foundation.

The foundation was started by actor Brad Pitt in an effort to get people to donate money or volunteer their time towards reconstructing the lower Ninth Ward in New Orleans. That sector of New Orleans was nearly annihilated by Hurricane Katrina in August, 2005, and still hasn’t completely bounced back.

Teams sponsor homes - in this case, Anagnost’s class has a team name of The House that Teenagers Built - and those teams collect money to go toward those projects. People can log into the Make It Right Web site and donate directly if they wish by going to http://www.makeitrightnola.org and clicking Team Sponsored Home under the ‘Donations’ tab. From there, scroll down to the “House That Teenagers Built.”

Donations can also be dropped off at Ionia High School.

hello gorgeous people on board!

Good Morning to the fans and my fellow troll(s)
While you are anxiously waiting for “is she or isn’t” news, anticipating the match up of the year(Jen Jen versus Angie) at the pre-dawn Oscar shoot- out. Constantly reading tab articles about AJ putting her “unconfirmed” babie(s) at risk, don’t forget to make a donation to the MIR Project.

Now is the time to give and set an example for others. (sigh, sigh, YES troll(s) I have made my donations to this worthy cause.) This message is for the undecided voters out there. Have a great day and make it a MIR day. Thanks for all the updates Just Jared. You have a great web site but answer a girl’s email every now and then. Just kidding. peace to all.
