Angelina Jolie: We Have a Moral Obligation to Help Iraqi Refugees

We have finally reached a point where humanitarian assistance, from us and others, can have an impact.

UNHCR goodwill ambassador Angelina Jolie visited Iraq earlier this month and penned her experience for The Washington Post.

Here are some excerpts from Angie’s excellent opinion piece: “During my trip I also met with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, who has announced the creation of a new committee to oversee issues related to internally displaced people, and a pledge of $40 million to support the effort.

“My visit left me even more deeply convinced that we not only have a moral obligation to help displaced Iraqi families, but also a serious, long-term, national security interest in ending this crisis.

“Today’s humanitarian crisis in Iraq — and the potential consequences for our national security — are great. Can the United States afford to gamble that 4 million or more poor and displaced people, in the heart of Middle East, won’t explode in violent desperation, sending the whole region into further disorder?”

pinkrose, I didn’t ruin my post. That was some hater who tried to write her/he upthread and messed it up so she wrote them again on another copy. I hope that is what you were referring to. Peace.

#91 “shut up” Take a look at Angie’s fact sheet before you keep shooting your lamebrain mouth off about Angie not being qualified to give her opinions after her visit to Iraq.

Thanks JJ for the post. Angie is really a smart woman. Great article.

Interesting and if you look further you will see the page on why the UNCHR chose the 7 or 8 celebs or singers to be a voicee for them in all different areas.

KUDOS ANGIE!

Look I’m not a fan of Jennifer Aniston,…but to say she was only ever considered A-List because of Brad is ridiculous. She was the star of one of the most famous shows in history.
I think if it wasn’t for BP, x would be just like the two other female Friends. Not much talked about.

She was huge before Brad. What about the ‘Rachel’ haircut.
Was she? Never noticed. What about the haircut? Please, are people that shallow?
Angelina has a life outside Hollywood, a life which, in my opinion, is more interesting, although I must admit her movies are entertaining.

……. The U.N did not even sanction, need, or was aware of her “cowboy” solo save the Iraqi refugees mission she undertook. …..

I do not think angelina is in any position to dictate if my son should stay in Iraq to support her cause.

=====================

This is the ridiculous and incorrect propaganda line being pushed by FF and MediaLiar. Where do they get this inane notion from. Riiiiight. Jolie just went on her own and convinced the US State Department and the US Army to allow her to take a little vacation in Baghdad - and escorted by her very own US State Department official no less. Do these people know how stupid they sound? The State Department and the military doesn’t have time for that. And they would never do that. These pathetic women are simply clueless.

They also think that Jolie brought her own photogs with her - not even realizing that the military has its own photographers & film crews documenting every litle visit, every little event that goes on in Iraq.

As for this woman’s son - I assume he is an adult. I assume he will make his own decisions - no matter what his mommy thinks. I am amazed at these parents who think they should control the decisions of their grown sons and daughters. None of whom were drafted.

I applaud Jolie’s efforts. She is doing incredibly important and brave work. I happen to agree that we cannot just pull out militarily in an irresponsible way. As opposed to the Vietnam war as I was, I was appalled at the way we just cut and ran and left behind those who aided us and abandoned them to their perilous fates.

It amazes me that there is suuch a failure to grasp just how important it is to help Iraq stabilize its population with the safe return of citizens who want to help rebuild Iraq. People busy rebuilding their lives and businesses and schools are not interested in shielding and enabling terrorists in their midst. Our military withdrawal and Iraq stabilization has to go hand in hand.

She has certainly made great use of her time and her life these past 7 years. Her independence and her daring have given her the cojones necessary to do this job as well as she does. Bravo Jolie.

It just gets on my nerves when “actors” want to tell other peole what to do- considering the fact that they HAVE the money to be generous.
*************************************************************************

She’s not telling anybody what to do. She’s telling it as she saw it. You’re free to agree or disagree with what she says. But what she is doing is making people aware of an untenable situation. Without people like her, idiots like Francesca and Shut Up would know absolutely nothing about the situation of the Iraqi refugees and would care even less.

It’s easy to take potshots at Angelina but what are the naysayers doing? Zilch. Zip. Nada.

mmmjustsaayin @ 02/28/2008 at 4:04 pm
SHE STILL CHICKENED OUT OF MEETING X….bwahaha all show and NO GO!!!
***************************************************************

Hardly, honey. X wasn’t worth the effort. Do you honestly believe — after all this time — that Angelina gives a tin shít what X thinks? She’s got way more important things to think about. Like Brad, their children, and the one (or two) she’s carrying now. Suppose they had actually met up — what were you expecting? A big screaming hair-pulling smackdown? It would most likely have been the mother of all anti-climaxes: “Hi, how are you, fine, nice to see you, bye.”

I pity your lonely little life that is so empty you must have been salivating in anticipation of a big “confrontation” that wouldn’t have amounted to two lines worth of commentary in your favorite tabloid if it had taken place.

shut up @ 02/28/2008 at 4:50 pm

One question, honey — how many more times are you going to change your name here so you can keep on agreeing with yourself?

Sh*t gets old, yanno?

dakota jean @ 02/28/2008 at 6:02 pm
Angelina has a moral obligation to love her bio children as much as she loves and dotes on her adopted ones.
*******************************************************

And whoever said she doesn’t? Why would you want to display your stupidity by parroting some idiotic cover story in Life & Style? You really need to stop reading the tabs, honey; you’re only embarrassing yourself.

uh, HELLO ANYONE? @ 02/29/2008 at 2:43 am

I read Angelina’s statement, and am i THE ONLY ONE who is not jumping to any serious conclusions here? All she said was that we have a “long-term, national security interest in ending this crisis.” Now, as someone who knows a bit about international politics, this DOESN’T automatically mean she is saying that the invasion and the war in Iraq must continue at the same level of soldiers being deployed or in the same context as now.

There are THOUSANDS OF U.S. SOLDIERS stationed in different parts of the world, including Europe and Asia. So MAYBE, and I don’t wanna put words in her mouth, she meant that the U.S. government should put in on their top agenda to monitor what goes on in Iraq, even at the very minimal level, which even Dems like Clinton & Obama support. This means vestigial troops, a handful, to protect diplomats who work in Iraq and such. And this is normal procedure.

Now, I dunno exactly what she means by her statement; all she said was that it’s in the U.S.’s interest that they quell the chaos (which the Bush admin. undoubtedly triggered, I think we can all agree on that), and this could mean militarily (which many of you are quick to jump on, and thereby judging Angelina right away), diplomatically, or in other ways.

SO some of the people in this post, PLEASE don’t judge her just by ASSUMING what she means. This is just cautionary.

AND ALSO, a handful of people in this post have negative things to say about people who practice the Muslim faith. All I gotta say to those people is to be more educated. What a handful of terrorists, of religious extremists, have done in the recent decades IS NOT a reflection of a centuries-old religion. Crazies are everywhere, in any religion. So keep the generalizing at bay. AND STOP THE HATING. The last thing our world needs is more people who hate.

Peace out. :-)

Oh, RIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT. Just like you spent six months in Africa learning about how the other half lives. Damn, I should have known.

Give it up, Shitzy. Every time you open your mouth, in goes your foot. Sooner or later you out yourself. You’re a fraud, honey, pure and simple. You haven’t been the middle east or anywhere else outside your trailer park.

ITA.

Oh my…………..some people here………..

Of course people post about things that get on their nerves as well as they post abou things they like.
I don´t see why I shouldn´t?

It´s not like I walk around thinking only about “Angelina Jolie”…….like some other (scary) people here…..

I come, post and leave.
The way it should be. And now before you ask why I post on so many Angie topics– well, they tend to be the only ones where peole respond.
So if there were more people at Johnny Depp or Madonna topics…

Oh and one last thing!

Alot of people here seem to be confused about the purpose of this site. It is not a——–LEAVE ONLY POSITIVE COMMENTS————–site. It´s there for everybody who has the ability to write, now be that stuff you agree with or not.

This is not an ANGELINA fan site—–like some peole here seem to think it is. So if you can only complain about the so called “haters” on a non-Angie site, why the hell are you even here?
Why waste your energy here ?

Just go log in, or form a “I love everything Angie does”site and be done with it.

oscar s eas son @ 02/29/2008 at 12:32 am

The phillipino refugees who called on her for support were not important enough to visit.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I hope the filipino fans won’t mind if I respond to this.

(1) The philippines has really bad government. The administration is very corrupt.

(2) the top 10 families in the philippines control more than 50% of the nations wealth. A study in 1999, showed that one family controlled more than 17% of the nations wealth and I doubt that has changed. Can you imagine this??if you’ve never heard of the gokongwei’s, the aquinos, the ayalas, you might want to try googling them. Many of these families have entrenched political positions as well. Well, it stands to reason, vote buying, vote rigging, etc require money. And if you own 17% of a nations wealth, you are a little king/queen yourself.

(3) what the filipino farmers are doing is calling for greater equality in the distribution of land and wealth. There are landless peasants in the Philippines, as they are in Mexico and South America. I think its a system the spanish left behind (and I’m not being sarcastic here).

(4) Essentially then, what the filipino farmers are seeking is greater justice, a redistribution of wealth. But it is hardly civil war. And it is hardly caused by an external oppressor on the rights of another people and another culture. What they are doing is very very important but they are not refugees of a civil war or of oppression.

(5) UNHCR is not involved in the Philippines fight for justice and neither should Angelina as a representative of UNHCR. If UNHCR becomes involved and requests Angelina’s presence, I have no doubt she will make an effort to go. Alternatively, when the US State Department makes a special request for Angelina to visit these poor peasants, Angelina will most likely make an effort to go. From her past behaviour, that’s what she has done when she wants to visit a trouble spot.

(6) I seriously doubt the filipino farmers thought angelina would visit them. But, hey, they used her name and got the attention they wanted.

(7) And if you are really serious about wanting to protect these poor farmer’s rights and advance their causes (rather than take a cheap shot at Angelina), I’m sure you can visit their website, make a donation. You can also start to put pressure on your congressman or senator to do something about the poor farmers in the philippines whom the UNHCR and the US State department amongst others, have ignored.

Additionally, if you are sincere about helping the filipino farmers, then to sound like a credible advocate, you must consider all the issues before shooting your mouth off. It’s very important you don’t let your hate and prejudices blind you so that you end up sounding like a bitter vindictive fool.

Blessings to Jolie-Pitt Family….

Hello to all the fans and special kaway to all my kababayan……

Thank you Angie for speaking your mind and relating your experience and observations. You are a role model worth emulating for….With people from both sides of the political spectrum opining about what you wrote, discussing issues such as related to Iraq, oil crisis, refugees, and other related issues, IMO that’s a guage that you were effective in spreading awareness and social consciousness.

As has been said by many posters upthread, having military personnel help or work with humanitarian or rebuilding efforts, paints a different picture, than seeing them carrying guns. With a shovel or laying bricks and building schools and hospitals, being involved in medical missions depicts a positive perception that the US or the coalition forces are there to help them create and sustain peace and order. In a stable political environment and governed by leader with political will, can only increase the chance of paving the way for social and economic infrastructure for recovery and sustainable development.

If by being criticized and every word dissected and studied under the microscope of public opinion, jolts people from their stupor, then I hope, Angie you’re as strong as I perceived you to be because you will likely have to be subjected to this kind of scrutiny over and over again if you keep on doing your job and your mission.

In a fast changing world, the world is getting smaller. Situations in far flung places in 3rd world and war torn countries affects those that lives in fragile “safe environments” of the 1st world and highly industrialized countries. With our dependence to petroleum based products and as global citizens, we can’t afford to have an insular mindset. Unless, more countries adapt what Brazil has done.

In business/global trade, relationships among countries and businesses, people are much closer, and interlinked with mass production, assembly lines and OEMs for example. If for ex. there’s a strike in one of the factories in China that makes special ICs for a consumer product, then those assembly lines in a factory somewhere in the Philippines for example cannot complete a consumer electronic product marketed as a Japanese brand. In the Philippines for example where there are designated economic zones (foreign investors, setting up factories that generates jobs for the community and neighboring areas) highly depends on electric power or petroleum based products to run their machines. If oil becomes scarce with chaos in oil producing countries, then factories will close because they can no longer sustain the skyrocketing overhead costs and price surges of raw materials. Hence, many will loose jobs, which in turn have a multiplier effect.

So everyone has a stake in this global village that we live in. We should be aware of what’s going on around our own community and our global village. Think global and act local.

Thank you JJ for this thread up.

lylian @ 02/29/2008 at 5:22 am #501

Hi lylian, I’m a Filipino and I agree with you. Corruption in our country is pervasive from the highest office down to the lowest government unit which is the barangay.

The issue with the peasants is a complex matter. IMO, its more about agrarian reform although it does not discount the displacement issue.

uh, HELLO ANYONE? @ 02/29/2008 at 2:43 am #493

Great post.

You know what the old folks say, its much harder to wake people who are just pretending to be asleep than those who are truly sleeping.

I grow up with friends who are Moslems, I have relatives who are Moslems are married to Moslems, I have an uncle who converted to Islam, went to school with some Moslems, who are as peace loving and family oriented people as anyone who are practicing other religions…..those that are ready to point their accusing finger and play the blame game, are most often than not are those that has no solutions to offer but practice the art of negative thinking as opposed to rational thinking. There’s nothing wrong with being skeptical and probing but being actively critical all the time is another matter.

you’re so down to earth person. I can’t say anything else but a big WOW!

Admire you Angelina & more power to you. Bless you & your family.

an oldie @ 02/28/2008 at 9:38 pm # 399 Passing Through @ 02/28/2008 at 9:08 pm
=====================

I love your post in response to Francesca. I doubt though that her mom came to this country with just 3 dollars, and made it all the way thru med school without any monetary help from anybody whatsoever. I really want to know how she managed early on, after landing here. Where did she live, how did she pay the rent, how did she get a job right away without any money for transportation and speaking no English on top of that? I love success stories, but to make me believe she did it without any monetary help at first is a hard thing to do.

———-
an oldie,
my mother did come to this country with only about three dollars to her name. she had to sew it into the lining of her skirt so that they wouldn’t take it from her. she went to new york and swept streets and stayed at a shelter until she had money saved to stay at a YMCA. while there, all she could afford to purchase for consumation EACH DAY was a glass of 5 cent milk with the cream left on top…..no food. she kept saving her money and trying to learn English. she was finally able to get a job filing at Blue Cross and Blue Shield. there, she had a supervisor who refused to promote her unless she started answering the phones. this of course was a good thig as it helped with her communication skills and the English language. she continued to save her money and went to Spain to attend medical school. when she returned to the states, she started working at BCBS again until she was able to get a job working in an actual hospital. by the way, she was also supporting her mother and cousin (a child at the time) who had followed her from Cuba. she NEVER took a hand out, she NEVER accepted charity. i was not comparing her to the Iraqi refugees.

when i raised her up as a topic it was to show her as being a person of action not just talk.

don’t you DARE question anything about my mother. you aren’t fit to shine her shoes.

I think If I were Angelina and my fans kept bringing my guy’s ex, I would not like those fans. Its old news and boring as hell. Do you really think it’s a benefit to Angie to have people yakking day and night about the previous lover. No it isnt. Also, Jen has moved on. What is this need to bash her? I dont think a great person like Angie would approve of that. She has a heart.

to Francesca @ 02/29/2008 at 10:29 am

Just want to know how to practice medicine in the US with foreign medical degree. I want to do that to as medical school here is too expensive and the admittance process is so tough. But I know refugees whose medical degrees are not from US have to take tests in the US still. And many of them, went about to other countries to study because of limited English like your mother, failed repeatedly and have to settle for working as nursing aids in the hospital. Did your mother have to take the tests before she could practice? Could you ask her? It would help lots of people to know ways to become doctors in US with limited English.

By the way, I know some refugees (escaping communist by boat) cut their thighs and hid diamonds and gold nuggets in there to avoid being robbed by pirates and coast guards after getting words from people who left prior that hiding them in clothes’ lining no longer work. They actually came to the US or other countries with lots of money. Some of them though like to tell stories of hardship and self made though. It made a more awe-inspiring life story and give loads of balm to pride, especially to Americans.
