Angelina Jolie: We Have a Moral Obligation to Help Iraqi Refugees
We have finally reached a point where humanitarian assistance, from us and others, can have an impact.
UNHCR goodwill ambassador Angelina Jolie visited Iraq earlier this month and penned her experience for The Washington Post.
Here are some excerpts from Angie’s excellent opinion piece: “During my trip I also met with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, who has announced the creation of a new committee to oversee issues related to internally displaced people, and a pledge of $40 million to support the effort.
“My visit left me even more deeply convinced that we not only have a moral obligation to help displaced Iraqi families, but also a serious, long-term, national security interest in ending this crisis.
“Today’s humanitarian crisis in Iraq — and the potential consequences for our national security — are great. Can the United States afford to gamble that 4 million or more poor and displaced people, in the heart of Middle East, won’t explode in violent desperation, sending the whole region into further disorder?”

Sorry, i meant filipino
No, Rachesun, I think it’s the issue how America got into this war, because it’s doing it over and over again. This is probably the most importatnt issue. This is not the game for the victims, but for those people who’re doing this - like your president - it’s just the manipulative game.

The humanitarian crisis of the Refugee situation in Iraq, lost of civilians, women and children and military lives should be stressed above anything. Whether people are for or against the war, it has taken it’s toll in lives. I see that more “mainstream” news outlets are picking up the Washington Post article and writing about it. AJ has gotten positive response from her mission to Iraq and her Washington Post Article. She is an effective UN Ambassador. She has been doing her UN duties since 2001 and has been in the field more than most political leaders. She backs her words with action. She has my respect. Peace to all.
angelena should stay in a kikchen an cook and be aboout having babbies an takin care of har other youngins. look womenly an shut up an stay out of mens beznezz..poltics is four mens an election woman.
What does Janice know and all of these people who say **** about Jolie and Brad…..Nothing..
They all complain and they do nothing to help others!
All they do is sit on there asses and complain about Angie without having any valid reason too….Angie is helping the poor around the world..and giving an enormous amt of cash to help people in crisis…Janice has probably been to her grocery store and back to her house or Apt…that’s it..Talk about losers…
Jolie ..All i want to say is keep stepping..hold that head high and keep doing your own thing…And have all the babies you want…Girl…GO for 13….I’m with you all the way..Your not asking those morons to help raise your kids…I say…You and Brad should have all the babies you want…let let all those trolls go f..k themselves..

You are sad.
AJ doesn’t cook. Why the hell sould she. She is an extreamly talented woman who’s better off doing amazing life changing things for others.
Let me know if you figure out how to make a difference from your kitchen.
Helen ..OMg…you are one of those people i just mentioned…Oh lord..Why do we have so many *******…Helen…do me a favor…drink some sleeping pills and go over to the other side..
It is wonderful to have an informed and intelligent discussion on the diverse differences of politics vs humanitarian causes.
helen you r smarte women dant listen. angelena is dum as doornails, she be losing har mens if she dant shut up an be a reel women. stay awye frome politic. har problems helen, 1 she dant cook, she half many. post moore helan.
Go to hell : at least she is doing something, it’s not like everybody at HW or around the world cares much, look even at the news, there is more and more time trassmiting news about britney or Paris. If what it is needed are celebrities talking about good causes to make them known, they shoulde be welcomed.
Audery Hepburn went to Ethiopia and other countries when there were huge hunger crisis, she tried to help. And she was “just an actress”. I remember that I was young then (didn’t watched much news), but it impresed me, the news about her, teh pictures about those (hambrunas) crisis were on different types of magazines, not just the news, and we went to buy stuff from Unicef (agendas, and cups) because we tried to help (family and friends), and it was because we heard about it.
At least is more than just writing a check.

I am less likely to be impressed by people who just “say” without the “do”. Like I said, kudos to Angelina but she accepted an important job.
Angelina had a wild past, turned herself around and is now doing good things, aside from making movies. That IS impressive! She not only “says,” she also “does!” As OReilly said, Angelina talks the talk and walks the walk!
She wants to be considered credible and so she should come up with real solutions instead of just happy endings.
Have you even read her article? I mean really read it? Her job, her business, is refugees.
She HAS come up with a solution. She is suggesting that the troops stay to assist the Iraqi government and the UNHCR, in helping the refugees return to their homes and build a new life. Apparently the troops themselves want to be part of the humanitarian effort.
Angelina’s suggestion is reasonable and fair to the people of Iraq, because the US invasion caused them to lose, in many cases, everything!
I’m puzzled by the people who attack Angelina and ridicule everything she does.
I read that “Many attacks…are motivated by envy, which is so much more corrosive than jealousy.
Jealousy wants to possess what another has; envy aims to obliterate utterly, even if in the process the attack brings down the attacker as well.” This is especially for those posters from FF, who really want to bring her down.
OMG, did JustJared just out Nicole Richee love her? Her name is now appearing in post #544, but according to Jess0 #546, #544 was originally Helen! And she has has posted Angelina bashing posts.
The Politico) Angelina Jolie!!!! The Most Famous Potentially Pregnant Woman in the World has been invited to Capitol Hill. Somebody, please tell Drudge.

lylian: No one is trying to discredit your mum’s achievements. Kudos to her for trying, for putting up the good fight to become the woman she became. However I don’t think from your own report that she did it on her own.
You said: my mother did come to this country with only about three dollars to her name. …. she went to new york
Lylian: She went to new york. I’m assuming your mother landed in Cuba like many did, so how did she get to NY on 3 dollars? Did she hitch hike, did she walk?? If she landed anywhere else other than NY with nothing other than 3$ in the lining of her coat, she presumably got there through the kindness of others.
You said: and swept streets and stayed at a shelter
lylian: She stayed in a shelter. Even if she had paid a small sum for the shelter, the shelter was most likely subsidised. Some one set up the shelter for people like your mum to stay and find her feet.
You said: until she had money saved to stay at a YMCA.
lylian: The YMCA itself was originally set up by christians to provide cheap accommodation to those like your mum.
You said: she NEVER took a hand out, she NEVER accepted charity.
lylian: From what you yourself have said, along the way, she did take charity, she did get a hand out, and by the way, THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH ACCEPTING HELP AND CHARITY IN YOUR TIME OF NEED.
lylian: The important thing to me is if and when you accept charity or a hand out in your time of need you should remember:
(a) to be GRATEFUL for those who have done something to help you and
(b) to PAY IT FORWARD when you can give.
Because it is a blessing to be able to give and it is a blessing to receive.
You said: don’t you DARE question anything about my mother. you aren’t fit to shine her shoes.
Lylian: So, I don’t for one minute question your mother’s courage and strength of purpose or anything like that. What I question is the lessons you seem to have derived from her experience - which as someone said, you lack some humility and generosity of spirit and I’m sure that wasn’t because your mother didn’t teach you.
And before you say, what would I know, old timers here know that my family were very poor, growing up in South East Asia. So I do know a thing or two about a father who had to pull themselves up with by his own bootstraps during and after World War II when the Japanese invaded our area and people were being killed. He too slogged like a dog to support his family during the war. But my father taught me to be humble and to appreciate the help people offered along his way to success - be it a kind word of encouragement or a regular invitation to a meal at home by a kindly teacher. And he taught me the privilege of paying it forward. Because, frankly, but for the grace of God, there goes I.
Hi guys that was me -Helen/a and I were having a spat on another site/ thread about NR and Angelina/Brad and I busted her. So I told her I would I would post the stuff she has been posting, on TMZ and Perez, (I think she is the one who has been posting as guli,FL and AG on Perez) on the NR site you are unable to copy it. She posted what I just wrote on a anti-Angelina site, and then answered herself with agreement. So I posted what she wrote and told her I would , and I used her name Helen/a, so you could see what a hater she was, I was hoping she would follow me with a fake name so I could bust her on JJ’s. I should have just posted my- name- then said it was- Helens -comments, especially with all the name stealing, changing trolls on here. I am so sorry, I scre.wed up. I forgot about JJ changing names to original names, I forgot because I was honestly not trying to be dishonest, just got caught up in the heat of the battle with that witch Helena. Sorry guys I’m going to bed, that’s the truth of it.
I’m assuming your mother landed in Cuba like many did,
Oops, I mean to say “your mother landed in Florida, like many did”
If Angelina cared about the Iraqi refugees she would publically say
END THE WAR.
BUT SHE’S a TOOL AND HYPROCRIT and knows that if she spoke out against the war then NO MORE MEETINGS WITH TOP BUSH OFFICIALS TO STROKE HER HUNGRY EGO.
IF SHE”S SAID END THE WAR IN SUDAN WHY CAN”T SHE SAY END THE WAR IN IRAQ?????????
It is not hard to fly first class to a foreign country, meet with important people, and then write a paper on it,(anyone who has graduated from high school or college has had to do the same type of writing).
What is hard is effecting real change-this is the task that miss angelina is just not up for or even interested in. Her primary efforts focus on establishing relationships with an international contact base consisting primarily of important officials, (this ultimately increases her own power base. It does far less in helping refugees, but what am I saying? They are just “details”).
The phillipino refugees who called on her for support were not important enough to visit. But Iraqi refugees - now that’s HOT! The U.N did not even sanction, need, or was aware of her “cowboy” solo save the Iraqi refugees mission she undertook.
Please make no mistake, miss Angelina is a little too transparent in marketing her own self important persona, (especially now around Oscar time since she knew the press would not be covering an award for her this year.)
I do not think angelina is in any position to dictate if my son should stay in Iraq to support her cause. How nice it must be not to have to deal with all these “details”.
angelina succks @ 02/29/2008 at 8:59 pm
I thank you for your son’s service to this country, however, it seems you have personal issues, and it shows.
Orchid @ 02/29/2008 at 7:30 pm
Thanks for your response. It’s obvious some people have hidden agendas. Reading this thread shows how divided we all are, eventhough we read the same report, we interpret those facts completely differently. I can just imagine that the UN and other organizations have the same difficulties. It’s hard to have an open mind in an open society, and that’s the irony of all this.
Peace

Whether you like it or not THERE ARE VICTIMS of IRAQ war including 4 million refugees. So, what are you going to do with them? ABANDON them?
angelina succks @ 02/29/2008 at

There are no phillipino refugees.
To YUCK @ 02/29/2008 at 8:51 pm
Have you really read her article? Where does she say to go on fighting? Her business is refugees. She concentrates on refugees.
The only times she referred to the war in general is when she wrote,
“What we cannot afford, in my view, is to squander the progress that has been made.” But then she returns to her business again, the refugees, in the next sentence, “In fact, we should step up our financial and material assistance….
Sudan was not invaded by the US, but the US is totally responsible for the invasion of, and subsequent fighting in and destruction of Iraq, so the US is totally responsible to solve the Iraq crisis, including the plight of the refugees.
ritzy is completely stuck today ?
She has been so jealous over Angie.
Brad, Beauty, Intelligence ………..
What else left for her to console her defeated soul ?
Did I say being known for a haircut was a big achievement. No. I was just trying to point out that she was very famous before Brad. Being on one of the biggest TV shows ever is an achievment though. In the 90’s she was probably the most talked about actress around, like Angelina is now.
Is Aniston working with TRUE A-Listers? Actors and directors? No.
———————————————————————————————–
Angelina has made her share of crappy films. Aniston has made a few good films since Friends and gotten a fair bit of critical acclaim (The Good Girl, Friends With Money). She’s also made some utter crap and like Angelina a few years ago, she’s paying the price for some bad decisions. It might be a good idea for some of you to remember that between Tomb Raider & Mr & Mrs Smith Angelina was in a huge slump professionally. During that time she was mostly famous for topping most beautiful/sexiest lists and doing weird **** with Billy Bob.
Would Angelina be as famous without Brad. No. While I was impressed with her work in A Mighty Heart, it’s not her work that’s making her famous at the moment. It’s her private life, above anything else she’s doing. So before you slight Jennifer for only being famous for being Brads ex, think about whether Angelina would really be so big without him. Just a few years ago she was being linked to every guy around, the tabloids were sticking her with the desperate for a man tag and the work was drying up. Much like Jennifer today. My point is if you want to bash Jennifer for something, make sure the woman you all admire hasn’t been in the same position. It makes your argument weak.
Orchid @ 02/29/2008 at 9:38 pm

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I totally agree. And the US should SOLELY be financially responsible to reconstruct IRAQ and help the refugees. The US did not hesitate to pour trillions of dollars to bombed IRAQ resulting in deaths, destruction and a humanitarian crisis. I would call it cowardice if the US shirks from the responsibility of righting the wrongs it has done through an unjustified war.
The US painstakingly rebuilt Japan and Germany, which were considered the war aggressors. It will surely baffle the mind, if the US chooses to abandon a country which was unjustifiably maimed and brutalized.

It is not hard to fly first class to a foreign country, meet with important people, and then write a paper on it,(anyone who has graduated from high school or college has had to do the same type of writing).
Angelina could fly to Paris, attend the haute couture shows and pose in gorgeous gowns from the various haute couture houses, but she doesn’t do that. She has made the refugees her business outside Hollywood.
This paragraph tells me that you don’t think before you speak!
W, the most powerful person in the world, can’t change things. There is still no Palestinian state!!! He would love that before he leaves office. It takes teamwork, the effort of a great many people and many countries.
Same with refugees. Angelina can’t change things by herself. Antonio Guterres, the head of the UNHCR can change things by himself. It takes a whole lot of work by a lot of people from many countries to help feed, house and resettle the refugees in other countries or help them return to their own country.
The phillipino refugees who called on her for support were not important enough to visit. But Iraqi refugees - now that’s HOT!
I understand the Burmese refugees also would appreciate a visit, but she can’t go everywhere. There are 6 or 7 other UNHCR goodwill ambassadors. AJ has visited Iraq already. It’s only natural that she stays/goes on with Iraq.
The U.N did not even sanction, need, or was aware of her “cowboy” solo save the Iraqi refugees mission she undertook.
I bet the UNHCR is very happy to have her work for them. She has initiative. If she also gets in the news because of her work for them, so what? She is famous already.
Please make no mistake, miss Angelina is a little too transparent in marketing her own self important persona, (especially now around Oscar time since she knew the press would not be covering an award for her this year.)
She really doesn’t need more exposure. It just comes with the territory. She is committed to her work for the UNHCR.
I do not think angelina is in any position to dictate if my son should stay in Iraq to support her cause. How nice it must be not to have to deal with all these “details”.
You haven’t really read her article, have you! Nowhere in this article does she dictate anyone to stay in Iraq to support her cause.
Print the article (only 2 pages) and read it carefully before you speak, and don’t put words in her mouth!
Edit:
Antonio Guterres, the head of UNHCR, can’t change things by himself.

BWAHAAHAH Angelina was a FAMOUS humanitarian/academy award winning actress long before Brad came into her life. Brad has had plenty of bombs his damn self… he admitted to being depressed because of the ****** films. Pfft
