Angelina Jolie: We Have a Moral Obligation to Help Iraqi Refugees
We have finally reached a point where humanitarian assistance, from us and others, can have an impact.
UNHCR goodwill ambassador Angelina Jolie visited Iraq earlier this month and penned her experience for The Washington Post.
Here are some excerpts from Angie’s excellent opinion piece: “During my trip I also met with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, who has announced the creation of a new committee to oversee issues related to internally displaced people, and a pledge of $40 million to support the effort.
“My visit left me even more deeply convinced that we not only have a moral obligation to help displaced Iraqi families, but also a serious, long-term, national security interest in ending this crisis.
“Today’s humanitarian crisis in Iraq — and the potential consequences for our national security — are great. Can the United States afford to gamble that 4 million or more poor and displaced people, in the heart of Middle East, won’t explode in violent desperation, sending the whole region into further disorder?”

i think she’s amazing and i love her and her family. i think we have a moral obligation to help the children of the united states first. schools are closing or over populated because of lack of money. we can educate our children first so that we can protect this country. i believe in helping the less fortunate but i just recently took a job at a high school and i think our youth are the ones that are not fortunate. we need more black educaters and counselors to help our black children and this is not just for the black children…this is for all children.
It is not hard to fly first class to a foreign country, meet with important people, and then write a paper on it,(anyone who has graduated from high school or college has had to do the same type of writing).
What is hard is effecting real change-this is the task that miss angelina is just not up for or even interested in. Her primary efforts focus on establishing relationships with an international contact base consisting primarily of important officials, (this ultimately increases her own power base. It does far less in helping refugees, but what am I saying? They are just “details”).
The phillipino refugees who called on her for support were not important enough to visit. But Iraqi refugees - now that’s HOT! The U.N did not even sanction, need, or was aware of her “cowboy” solo save the Iraqi refugees mission she undertook.
Please make no mistake, miss Angelina is a little too transparent in marketing her own self important persona, (especially now around Oscar time since she knew the press would not be covering an award for her this year.)
I do not think angelina is in any position to dictate if my son should stay in Iraq to support her cause. How nice it must be not to have to deal with all these “details”.
I agree, all the hollywood icons that have made millions of dollars for ‘acting’ do have an obligation to help others, let THEM help them.
That ’s the problem of socially conscious celebrities doing good things. there will always those jealous, nasty, negative voices coming from the pathetic haters questioning their motives.
These haters prefer celebrities who actually earn their millions from us audience and masses not giving back but using in tanning, spa, salon, shopping spree, alcohol , drugs, pampering themselves or doing nothing acting dumb . that’s the image of celebrities they love.
I ‘ll always admire Angie , Brad, GC,Leo, even Madonna and other’s actors trying to bring awareness to topics we people of the world have overlook. Thank you Angie at al.

If we didn’t go into the war in “Eyerack” to begin with, we could have used the billions we used there for killing to invest in the American education at home. We are still spending billions of dollars every month over there, to make more enemies, instead of friends. Shouldn’t you be concerned? And don’t try to play the race card. Somehow I think you are not black, and you don’t give a damn about black children.
Hi Everyone (Fans), I really enjoyed reading your intelligent and witty posts on this amazing topic our Angie got rolling in the Washington Post..

pinkrose, I didn’t ruin my post. That was some hater who tried to write her/he upthread and messed it up so she wrote them again on another copy. I hope that is what you were referring to. Peace.
#91 “shut up” Take a look at Angie’s fact sheet before you keep shooting your lamebrain mouth off about Angie not being qualified to give her opinions after her visit to Iraq.

Interesting and if you look further you will see the page on why the UNCHR chose the 7 or 8 celebs or singers to be a voicee for them in all different areas.
KUDOS ANGIE!

Look I’m not a fan of Jennifer Aniston,…but to say she was only ever considered A-List because of Brad is ridiculous. She was the star of one of the most famous shows in history.
I think if it wasn’t for BP, x would be just like the two other female Friends. Not much talked about.
She was huge before Brad. What about the ‘Rachel’ haircut.
Was she? Never noticed. What about the haircut? Please, are people that shallow?
Angelina has a life outside Hollywood, a life which, in my opinion, is more interesting, although I must admit her movies are entertaining.

This is the ridiculous and incorrect propaganda line being pushed by FF and MediaLiar. Where do they get this inane notion from. Riiiiight. Jolie just went on her own and convinced the US State Department and the US Army to allow her to take a little vacation in Baghdad - and escorted by her very own US State Department official no less. Do these people know how stupid they sound? The State Department and the military doesn’t have time for that. And they would never do that. These pathetic women are simply clueless.
They also think that Jolie brought her own photogs with her - not even realizing that the military has its own photographers & film crews documenting every litle visit, every little event that goes on in Iraq.
As for this woman’s son - I assume he is an adult. I assume he will make his own decisions - no matter what his mommy thinks. I am amazed at these parents who think they should control the decisions of their grown sons and daughters. None of whom were drafted.
I applaud Jolie’s efforts. She is doing incredibly important and brave work. I happen to agree that we cannot just pull out militarily in an irresponsible way. As opposed to the Vietnam war as I was, I was appalled at the way we just cut and ran and left behind those who aided us and abandoned them to their perilous fates.
It amazes me that there is suuch a failure to grasp just how important it is to help Iraq stabilize its population with the safe return of citizens who want to help rebuild Iraq. People busy rebuilding their lives and businesses and schools are not interested in shielding and enabling terrorists in their midst. Our military withdrawal and Iraq stabilization has to go hand in hand.
She has certainly made great use of her time and her life these past 7 years. Her independence and her daring have given her the cojones necessary to do this job as well as she does. Bravo Jolie.

It just gets on my nerves when “actors” want to tell other peole what to do- considering the fact that they HAVE the money to be generous.
*************************************************************************
She’s not telling anybody what to do. She’s telling it as she saw it. You’re free to agree or disagree with what she says. But what she is doing is making people aware of an untenable situation. Without people like her, idiots like Francesca and Shut Up would know absolutely nothing about the situation of the Iraqi refugees and would care even less.
It’s easy to take potshots at Angelina but what are the naysayers doing? Zilch. Zip. Nada.
mmmjustsaayin @ 02/28/2008 at 4:04 pm
SHE STILL CHICKENED OUT OF MEETING X….bwahaha all show and NO GO!!!
***************************************************************
Hardly, honey. X wasn’t worth the effort. Do you honestly believe — after all this time — that Angelina gives a tin shít what X thinks? She’s got way more important things to think about. Like Brad, their children, and the one (or two) she’s carrying now. Suppose they had actually met up — what were you expecting? A big screaming hair-pulling smackdown? It would most likely have been the mother of all anti-climaxes: “Hi, how are you, fine, nice to see you, bye.”
I pity your lonely little life that is so empty you must have been salivating in anticipation of a big “confrontation” that wouldn’t have amounted to two lines worth of commentary in your favorite tabloid if it had taken place.
shut up @ 02/28/2008 at 4:50 pm
One question, honey — how many more times are you going to change your name here so you can keep on agreeing with yourself?
Sh*t gets old, yanno?
dakota jean @ 02/28/2008 at 6:02 pm
Angelina has a moral obligation to love her bio children as much as she loves and dotes on her adopted ones.
*******************************************************
And whoever said she doesn’t? Why would you want to display your stupidity by parroting some idiotic cover story in Life & Style? You really need to stop reading the tabs, honey; you’re only embarrassing yourself.
I read Angelina’s statement, and am i THE ONLY ONE who is not jumping to any serious conclusions here? All she said was that we have a “long-term, national security interest in ending this crisis.” Now, as someone who knows a bit about international politics, this DOESN’T automatically mean she is saying that the invasion and the war in Iraq must continue at the same level of soldiers being deployed or in the same context as now.
There are THOUSANDS OF U.S. SOLDIERS stationed in different parts of the world, including Europe and Asia. So MAYBE, and I don’t wanna put words in her mouth, she meant that the U.S. government should put in on their top agenda to monitor what goes on in Iraq, even at the very minimal level, which even Dems like Clinton & Obama support. This means vestigial troops, a handful, to protect diplomats who work in Iraq and such. And this is normal procedure.
Now, I dunno exactly what she means by her statement; all she said was that it’s in the U.S.’s interest that they quell the chaos (which the Bush admin. undoubtedly triggered, I think we can all agree on that), and this could mean militarily (which many of you are quick to jump on, and thereby judging Angelina right away), diplomatically, or in other ways.
SO some of the people in this post, PLEASE don’t judge her just by ASSUMING what she means. This is just cautionary.
AND ALSO, a handful of people in this post have negative things to say about people who practice the Muslim faith. All I gotta say to those people is to be more educated. What a handful of terrorists, of religious extremists, have done in the recent decades IS NOT a reflection of a centuries-old religion. Crazies are everywhere, in any religion. So keep the generalizing at bay. AND STOP THE HATING. The last thing our world needs is more people who hate.
Peace out. :-)

Oh, RIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT. Just like you spent six months in Africa learning about how the other half lives. Damn, I should have known.
Give it up, Shitzy. Every time you open your mouth, in goes your foot. Sooner or later you out yourself. You’re a fraud, honey, pure and simple. You haven’t been the middle east or anywhere else outside your trailer park.
laydidah @ 02/28/2008 at 10:17 pm

******************************************************
LOL! You just nailed it, honey. She’s going to go down in history for wearing one of the most emulated haircuts of the 20th century. What an accomplishment! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Thank you Angie for caring.
Thank-You! Angelina for always thinking of others before yourself,You are truly a beautiful soul.I can see why Brad fell so in love with you.Bless you and Brad and the children and the new life you are carrying…..May the Angels always keep you surrounded and keep you from harms way..Love the Jolie-Pitts…Peace be with you…
Thanks JJ;)

Oh my…………..some people here………..
Of course people post about things that get on their nerves as well as they post abou things they like.
I don´t see why I shouldn´t?
It´s not like I walk around thinking only about “Angelina Jolie”…….like some other (scary) people here…..
I come, post and leave.
The way it should be. And now before you ask why I post on so many Angie topics– well, they tend to be the only ones where peole respond.
So if there were more people at Johnny Depp or Madonna topics…
Oh and one last thing!
Alot of people here seem to be confused about the purpose of this site. It is not a——–LEAVE ONLY POSITIVE COMMENTS————–site. It´s there for everybody who has the ability to write, now be that stuff you agree with or not.
This is not an ANGELINA fan site—–like some peole here seem to think it is. So if you can only complain about the so called “haters” on a non-Angie site, why the hell are you even here?
Why waste your energy here ?
Just go log in, or form a “I love everything Angie does”site and be done with it.
