Angelina Jolie: We Have a Moral Obligation to Help Iraqi Refugees
We have finally reached a point where humanitarian assistance, from us and others, can have an impact.
UNHCR goodwill ambassador Angelina Jolie visited Iraq earlier this month and penned her experience for The Washington Post.
Here are some excerpts from Angie’s excellent opinion piece: “During my trip I also met with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, who has announced the creation of a new committee to oversee issues related to internally displaced people, and a pledge of $40 million to support the effort.
“My visit left me even more deeply convinced that we not only have a moral obligation to help displaced Iraqi families, but also a serious, long-term, national security interest in ending this crisis.
“Today’s humanitarian crisis in Iraq — and the potential consequences for our national security — are great. Can the United States afford to gamble that 4 million or more poor and displaced people, in the heart of Middle East, won’t explode in violent desperation, sending the whole region into further disorder?”

TOO bad the UNHCR has to rely on CELEBRITY IDIOTS to promote their own causes. I guess the public can’t take an INTELLECTUAL or actual AID WORKER speaking out. TOO BORING eh?
Thank You Jared!!!!
Wonderful Thread about a Truly Wonderful and inspiring Woman..
Great Job Angie!!!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Angie is an ambassador not a UNHCR administrator. I am sure the US government and the UN would talk about the details which may not yet be ready for public consumption.
Thank you so much JJ for the new thread. It’s a great article from my favorite celeb. Very informative. Way to go Angelina Jolie! You are an inspiration to all women. Good Luck and God Bless you and Brad on the new addition to your family.
“…And when I asked the troops if they wanted to go home as soon as possible, they said that they miss home but feel invested in Iraq. They have lost many friends and want to be a part of the humanitarian progress they now feel is possible.”
For all those who have families in Iraq, for those who have lost a family member, we cannot imagine what you are going through, but don’t please don’t hate on Angelina for what she received as answers from the troops themselves
…and for those who want the $million to go to U.S., clearly there is no comparison to what the poorest in the U.S. is experiencing as opposed to Iraq and other refugees around the world.
SEE NO BORDERS PEOPLE. This is our world. We are all citizens of this world we live in. Let’s look at the much bigger picture!
WAY TO GO ANGIE!!! YOU MAKE US SO PROUD TO BE YOUR FANS!
She brings awareness. And as a fan, that’s what I want her to do. She is not a politician, and she reminds us that she is not a politician. She brings awareness. When there is awareness, there is discussion. When there is discussion, there is ideas. Then those ideas turn into action on individual level. And the individuals who elect the government officials in democratic countries like ours, speak their mind by voting a certain way and electing like minded officials who can help make the changes we want.

GREAT POST!!
Angelina for PRESIDENT!!!!!!
My problem is that she tries to overstep her role. Ok her role is to bring awareness and not to set foreign policy or be a diplomat..she is a pr person for the UN. Why is she such a controllign btch?
sHE IS THE BEST
SIMPLY an amazing human being…NOTHING or NO ONE compares to her beautiful and caring soul.
Good day everyone!
eat steak, how did you get controlling ***** out of the article? If it was a man doing all she does would you say the same thing? stfu already!
Wow, this thread brought out a lot of heated discussion.
It will be another thread with 1000 posts before we know it!
It is so funny that all these naysayers have all these opinions and comments about Angelina, expecting her to provide solutions, yet they do not demand the same from the president and the other politicians who got us into the mess that is Iraq in the first place.
…”It seems to me that now is the moment to address the humanitarian side of this situation. Without the right support, we could miss an opportunity to do some of the good we always stated we intended to do”
is RIDICULOUS.
the U.S. never invaded, nor does it currently occupy, Iraq because of any intention to do “good” (OR rid Iraq of nuclear weapons, OR rid Iraq of Hussein, OR promote democracy in Iraq). The U.S. did it for greed (oil) and power (to control the oil and hence, have some control over the Middle East). No one cares–not the U.S. OR the current Iraqi goverment–about displaced Iraqi’s. This has been an issue for several years and she’s just now jumping on the bandwagon.
THANK YOU ANGELINA JOLIE!!!!!!!!!!!!….Angie did her job well, now even the trolls know about refugees and issues related to internally displaced people…tsik..tsk tsk…
Look Angie doesn’t need to find solution for anything, her job is to presents the problems and may be help put a little pressure to those in powers ( politicians, presidents, prime minister..etc..) to do something about it.
BIG thanks to JJ for new thread!
ARGGGHHHHH——————-a bit much I know.
But this is really getting on my nerves. It´s a good thing she does.(of course)
But please, for the love of god, just pick one profession- actress or ambassador.
It just gets on my nerves when “actors” want to tell other peole what to do- considering the fact that they HAVE the money to be generous.

Damned America has started this war!
Oooh another thread. This is cool. Angelina is just keeping it moving. She’s doing what she always has been doing. Good article.
US Military personnel have ‘DAY JOBS and SPECIALTIES’ when they aren’t at war…They are engineers, electricians, communication and cable installers, building contructors, and thousands of skills etc., apt and competent to put back and enhance what’s been destroyed…Some of the money being used currently for the war can be reallocated for the reconstruction and direct aid (food, medical, clothing, travel) to the displaced…It can be done.
I don’t think that she is overstepping her role.
How is she overstepping her role?
She is bringing AWARENESS.

YVONNE, YOU are Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo STUPID and an idiot !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My problem is that she tries to overstep her role. Ok her role is to bring awareness and not to set foreign policy or be a diplomat..she is a pr person for the UN. Why is she such a controllign btch?
I COMPLETELY AGREE.
As far as sticking her nose into other business. She IS doing her job. She is a Goodwill Ambassador, she is doing her job just like others - men, women (yep and even some of them pregnant) do everyday. I respect that
As far as how she protects her fetus. Lets care for all fetuses. I am sure there are many pregnant women over there now in the conditions the way they are. Do something to help them. Otherwise why “pretend” to care about Angelina’s fetus
Oh and the missing sentence above is “It´s good that she wants to help people.—–
I read your posts, you’re beeing RATIONAL, thing that most of the people here can be.
AGREE 100%
I completely agree with her view. You can’t just givce speaches about helping the ‘opressed’ people and making them free while all you do is destroy them. back up you words with action. Jolie rocks

Angelina Jolie has penned an op-ed article urging the United States to help Iraqi refugees who have been displaced by the war. In The Washington Post piece titled, “Staying to Help in Iraq,” the actress and goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees says American money and troops are key to addressing the humanitarian crisis. Jolie, 32, who recently visited the war-torn country, writes, “What we cannot afford, in my view, is to squander the progress that has been made. In fact, we should step up our financial and material assistance.”
