Angelina Jolie: We Have a Moral Obligation to Help Iraqi Refugees

We have finally reached a point where humanitarian assistance, from us and others, can have an impact.

UNHCR goodwill ambassador Angelina Jolie visited Iraq earlier this month and penned her experience for The Washington Post.

Here are some excerpts from Angie’s excellent opinion piece: “During my trip I also met with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, who has announced the creation of a new committee to oversee issues related to internally displaced people, and a pledge of $40 million to support the effort.

“My visit left me even more deeply convinced that we not only have a moral obligation to help displaced Iraqi families, but also a serious, long-term, national security interest in ending this crisis.

“Today’s humanitarian crisis in Iraq — and the potential consequences for our national security — are great. Can the United States afford to gamble that 4 million or more poor and displaced people, in the heart of Middle East, won’t explode in violent desperation, sending the whole region into further disorder?”

Hey alia. :D
Thanks for the pictures.

MADDOX ALREADY HAS THE CAMO OUTFIT.

dumb people don’t know the difference between politics and humanitarianism.

HAILEY 167 She is a freak! Seriously, she’s already acknowledging the fact that she doesn’t get into politics because she doesn’t know enough about them to comment.

She needs to keep to adopting all of the other nation’s orphans, while the US’s children remain orphans !

I think that if she knew what it would mean to stay in Iraq (177 Million dollars a day) she would shut here pie hole. We can still contribute the efforts of restoring life and structure as we did after WW II in other countries but it is not our job to continue to have the men and women in our country dying for a lost cause. Iraq needs to step it up because we are leaving next year! OBAMA 08

Don’t fret…NO ONE with any real say will take this woman seriously. Someone is humoring her and letting her jabber but believe me, the ones with the REAL power have already poo pooed everything she’ s said. I mean do you really think anyone in authority would do what this celebrity say…puh-LEASE she can’t even take care of 4 children without 17 nannies….John Stewart said so.

finally. oh sorry you’re not an billionaire actress with a martyr god complex. but good point.

=======================

To me, these are the most important part of her article. It is in the US’ own interest to settle the refugee problem in Iraq. We are doing it for ourselves, and not for the Iraqis when we take care of the problem.

why would she if she’s ?

besides, her children are under the age of 6. what a dumb question you asked. If you are anti-war you are pro humanity. But your question leaves a lot to be desired.

I truely believe she was pregnant when these pictures were taken. I made the comment that she looked tired. And was immediately jumped on.

Those questioning what Angie is saying about staying in Iraq should question John Mccane saying we might have to stay for 100 years. Peace

I worry that this lady, by wanting to help, might end up causing a hell
of a mess!

You sound like you have a degree from trailer park university

The UN did not say the US alone should give the $261M. It was a general appeal… Re; Money Allocation

UNHCR this year has appealed for US$261 million for programmes to support the most vulnerable of the uprooted inside and outside Iraq. A total of US$40 million will be for Iraqis displaced inside the country and will also be part of the Consolidated Appeal (CAP) which was launched Tuesday in Baghdad by the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq.

The Iraq CAP of US$265 million aims to meet the immediate needs of the most vulnerable Iraqis who have been displaced inside Iraq.

UNHCR has been assisting internally displaced Iraqis, but getting help to many of them is extremely difficult because of insecurity in much of the country. In 2008, the refugee agency is focusing on getting assistance to 400,000 of the most vulnerable of the displaced people in Iraq.

Last year, UNHCR registered more than 250,000 Iraqis in neighbouring states; gave health assistance to some 210,000 cases and provided educational support in Syria, Jordan and other countries that enabled tens of thousands of refugee children to attend school. Under the 2008 appeal, UNHCR has set a target of bringing the total to 200,000 children in school by the end of this year.

UNHCR is also providing direct assistance to vulnerable families, including a project that provides cash cards for limited monthly withdrawals. Together with the World Food Programme, UNHCR will provide food for up to 360,000 Iraqi refugees in Syria this year. In both Syria and Jordan UNHCR is distributing items such as blankets, heaters, mattresses and other support items.

I love her social commentary.

Way to go Angie… I love that this is great convo for fans…this is so light years away from all the other nonsense Americans are into.

If jolie is anti war why does Maddox own toy guns and military outfit?
Is he ready to sign up with military and go fight?

We’ve got a thread here with a great article written by Angie. Who CARES what is going on in that non-entities life!? It is just so minor when compared to what Angie has going on in hers that it doesn’t even warrant recognition on this thread. Personally, I’d like to hear more of your thoughts on the article at hand.

BUT SHE STILL CHICKENED OUT OF MEETING X….bwahaha all show and NO GO!!!

————————————————-
Hey stupid, Angie did not go because she knows that if she tries to talk to X about Humanitarian work and about Iraq situation your idol will be stunned and turn white because she does not know anything.ha ha ha ha.

Jolie needs to worry about her own sons and future Iraqs, not encouraging soldiers in Iraq to give up their lives for a “humanitarian mission”/SENSELESS WAR.

shut up @ 02/28/2008 at 4:47 pm

Maybe he is…..they are not the same people as Angelina is not the same as her right wing dad. he used to be a anti-war hippie and activist back in the day but the Actor was elected President, came to the White house and changed some people’s thinking.

hailey @ 02/28/2008 at 4:30 pm

Copy-pasted the same rant from Perez, did you. So lazy LOL

Seriously, if you want to let the 4 millions angry, poor, desperate people hanging around in 8 hrs flight time away from the US, by all means be my guest. You seemed to have forgotten what happened on 9/11. We will be breeding and encouraging evil fundamentalists who will take advantage of them and use against us. The poor in the US has been neglected by the rich in this country. Iraqis don’t even have rich to neglect them. Wake up, no matter how jealous you are of Angelina, this has nothing to do with your hatred against her. It’s about your backyard.

this one isn’t Iraq, it is Pakistan; but it is a gorgeous pic of Angie:
