Angelina Jolie: We Have a Moral Obligation to Help Iraqi Refugees

We have finally reached a point where humanitarian assistance, from us and others, can have an impact.

UNHCR goodwill ambassador Angelina Jolie visited Iraq earlier this month and penned her experience for The Washington Post.

Here are some excerpts from Angie’s excellent opinion piece: “During my trip I also met with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, who has announced the creation of a new committee to oversee issues related to internally displaced people, and a pledge of $40 million to support the effort.

“My visit left me even more deeply convinced that we not only have a moral obligation to help displaced Iraqi families, but also a serious, long-term, national security interest in ending this crisis.

“Today’s humanitarian crisis in Iraq — and the potential consequences for our national security — are great. Can the United States afford to gamble that 4 million or more poor and displaced people, in the heart of Middle East, won’t explode in violent desperation, sending the whole region into further disorder?”

3rd OT, GC goes to Darfur twice attempts to hold a press confrence to inform UN delegates about the war. Leaves with egg on his face. No one suggested that he shouldn’t have gone, didn’t know enough to start telling people what should be done, or called names. He is still considered the Last Great Movie Star. Peace

What happened to George while he was holding the press conference that he ended up looking bad? I know everyone was talking about it, but I completely missed it. What did he do?

#48: Even if it was Trevor’s words as you say, it is Angie’s visit that made it authentic and true. It is her experience and nothing you can say will change that.

Even presidents don’t write their own speech no matter how articulate. But I digress, Angelina has given you something of an awwie again that’s why we love her so. LOL.

1) Some of you are really embarrasing– you cannot be critical without resorting to insults. You can agree or disagree with Ms. Jolie’s opinion, but you must learn to control your emotions.

2) Some of you need to understand that Angelina Jolie don’t need anyone telling her what they can or cannot be, or do, or think about, or dream of doing. It is not for you to judge or say “she should do this, or she should not do that.”

3) Be logical. Be fair. Check your Assumptions. Think through the implications. : BE A CRITICAL THINKER. SHOW SOME INTEGRITY.

Ms. Jolie’s observations and efforts are remarkable. I only have the highest respect for her and everyone involved in making changes

Oh Hi TITA…bbl ..

shut up @ 02/28/2008 at 5:14 pm

and you’re complaining?
she was caring about children, the most beautiful thing you can do ….she was also visiting refugees of other wars…what have you done?

coalharbourqt @ 02/28/2008 at 5:20 pm

It is in the US best interests to help rebuild Iraq. Part of the rebuilding process is providing SCHOOLS for the children, so that they can become literate and better understand their own country and the world around them.

It is common knowledge that refugee CHILDREN specifically are prime targets for terrorist organizations. The terrorist organizations will offer the children an EDUCATION (biased, but an education) as well as shelter and food, and then groom them to become terrorists. So if you want to stop the cycle of terrorism, you have to step up and offer them a decent life and education so that they will learn the difference between living a good and decent life or becoming a terrorist.

The worst thing that the US could do right now is abandon the Iraqi people. $177 million a day to run a war that has destroyed a country is a tragedy - $177 million a day to rebuild a country into a better and stronger foothold in the Middle East is an INVESTMENT in the people of Iraq and in a more stable Middle East.

Please tell me that even those who don’t like Angelina Jolie can understand THIS. As they say, don’t shoot the messenger!!

Love you sweet Angelina.

Justsaying
This is not the appropriate time or place for this but here goes— If what has been reported about the nonparty is true then;
Jen should have known better than to go to that party, we are talking about the first meeting between the two women. The woman Jen is convinced “stole her husband” Yet she was prepared to have that meeting in front of the world, why? Would you? I would’nt I would want privacy to speak my mind freely, not act all nice and civilized in front of the world, remember these are women who have images to maintain.
Knowing what you know about angelina, did you truly believe she would particpate in that? this is the woman who cut off all contact with her father because he does not respect her privacy, amoung other things. So you laugh at angie, the rest of the world is laughing at jen.

hottest couple ever @ 02/28/2008 at 5:23 pm

She is a remarkable young woman.

the real tita @ 02/28/2008 at 5:23 pm

#53 You want her to outline every step just like a general would. Then you guys will be complaining how impossible every bullet point is and that it can’t be done…why is she doing the planning, etc. etc.

She can’t win with you guys so why do you even bother?

Angelina Jolie: Seriously Beautiful

By Amy Argetsinger and Roxanne Roberts
The Washington Post
Thursday, September 29, 2005; Page C03

Jolie, the “U.N. goodwill ambassador,” wears a dark suit and a single strand of pearls. Her hair is expensively streaked. Her eyelashes are impossibly long.

Finally she speaks, declaring that the AIDS fight “needs to be all-inclusive,” tackling hunger and poverty as well. If the war in Iraq costs $5 billion a month, she complains, “three months of the war is all we’re spending on AIDS.”

Biden utters an impressed “Wow.”

“I don’t understand that,” she concludes. “I’m confused about the priorities.”

HAHAHAHA.

She’s confused and I’m confused too.

Thats what Angie was doing that nigth when silly ex was expecting her to come in the nigth before the oscars. ex should do the same. expend some of the millions she got from Brad and make something usefull fro her boring silly life

Francesca @ 02/28/2008 at 4:25 pm Indie,
I did read her article and I think she is correct in saying we shouldn’t discount the possible anger and what it could potentially generate.

I’m just not impressed with a column that exists solely to generate attention and not action. Think what you want about my opinions and what you think I should go do with them. They are mine and yours are yours. The end.
**********************************************************

Poor you, franny. Why must you torture yourself like this?

Anyhoo, here’s a little clue for you, which i hope will help you pull yourself out of your misery and ignorance:

E V E R Y T I M E, that Angelina Jolie makes representation on behalf of the UNHCR (whether through her articles which follow her visit to a humanitarian crisis area of the world (like the topic under discussion on this thread); or through her well publicised visits with refugees in their makeshift shelters, so that those of us who function solely at the level of concrete operations (like you, for example) can SEE the human suffering about which she speaks, the coffers of the UN EXPAND, as in GROW, as in: donations from ALL OVER THE WORLD flood the UN.

Are you getting it yet?

So your patently FALSE statement that : “a column that exists solely to generate attention and not action” only exposes you for the know-nothing empty barrel that you are, yes?

You should get down on your knees and give thanks for the anonymity of the internet whch prevents us from seeing what your particular brand of stupidity looks like.

yeah-yeah @ 02/28/2008 at 5:26 pm

SO we have a “moral obligation to help displaced Iraqi families”
TRANSLATION = “I want to buy me an Iraqi baby” - “I dont have an Iraqi baby!!!! Bring on the photographers and watch me buy an Iraqi baby!!!

Wow 260 post alreday you see Angie you are the it girl

the real tita @ 02/28/2008 at 5:28 pm

#65: If you hadn’t wanted her mentioned, you should just have ignored and moved on yourself. You want her mentioned that’s why you’re repeating the post.

See? no name repeated. You move on. You are not the blog police and you are not the boss here. Such arrogance!

I have read this article probably 5 times since it was posted at jjb. I am so proud of Angie, it is a very well written, to the point and non-political.
See if it were me, I’d start with ….why the heck did we start this war that made us lose over 4000 wonderful, brave sons and daughters and killed over 200,000 innocent civilians in Iraq etc..! That’s why no one listens to me :-)

But, thats now what Angie wants to point out. She is not going in the reasons why this war started…. What’s done is done! This is the situation NOW and we have a moral obligation as humanitarians to these innocent refugees, most of whom are kids..Also we need to ensure stability and peace so that it won’t become a national/mideast/world security issue in the long run….
BRAVO Angie!

Ladies and gents of BAMPZSville—many thanks for such wonderful, intelligent comments…

CMAR, Indie–it is great to see you two posting, we sure missed you :-)

cook—I loved your post re our military serves many, many functions not just combat…Thanks for pointing that out.

coalharbourqt @ 02/28/2008 at 5:31 pm

Hey ’shut up’ - are you going to add ANYTHING intelligent to the discussion here, or are you just going to keep giving JJ hits and bankroll a website that supports the Jolie-Pitts and their fans? Just asking…

You know maybe a bit of time should be spent in your own backyard, looking at all the homeless and displaced people in our own country.

How about the fact that we are fighting someone else’s war with OUR meaning mine and your money? Lets concentrate on bringing our own people back, then we can worry about what the Iraqis will do to get there own back home, as we are fighting for their freedom and rights.

the real tita @ 02/28/2008 at 5:36 pm

#67: She is stating her opinion. No need to bite her head off. Listen to the radio and watch news channels. People there are opining all the time. How come she gets your sole attention?

Did she say she had a plan that the government must follow? Is it her job to crunch out numbers for you to show she’s legit? It is an OP-ED! Do you go after everyone who does one? I’m sure you do since you’re so proud of your superior intellect. Your IQ is higher than hers, right? So why can’t you take her opinion as what it is, an opinion!

Francesca @ 02/28/2008 at 5:36 pm

She can’t even improve the climate in the relationship with her own father….why should we listen to her on the larger issues?

Malick officially shooting in Smithville
By Chris Garcia | Tuesday, February 12, 2008, 02:07 PM

The Statesman’s Michael Corcoran — sort of a blend of Bob Woodward and Kelso — shoots us this crackling dispatch straight from the perilous terrain of Smithville:

It’s official. After weeks of rumors and speculation, the location manager of “Tree of Life,” the Terrence Malick project starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn, addressed the Smithville City Council on Monday night to talk about filming there, which will begin at the end of March.

The shoot will last approximately three months, location manager John Patterson said.

“Security is going to be a big issue with( the film company),” says Smithville city manager Tex Middlebrook, who laughed and said he’d met notoriously private director Malick a few times without knowing who he was until recently.

Middlebrook says he helped the crew find and move a 60,000 pound live oak — the title tree — to a back yard in Smithville last week. Many of the cast and crew on the film, a 1950s period piece, have rented houses in Smithville, a town of 4,000 located 45 miles east of Austin.

Although Pitt has not been officially confirmed, he recently told Charlie Rose in an interview that his next project would be “Tree of Life.” It’s not known if Angelina Jolie and the kids will accompany Pitt to the town that might as well be called “Pittville” for the next four months.
