OlderPatrick Swayze Has Terminal Cancer
Patrick Swayze has terminal cancer and only has five weeks to live, reports The National Enquirer.
The 55-year-old Dirty Dancing actor was diagnosed in late January with pancreatic cancer that has spread to other organs. Swayze has been receiving treatment at Stanford University’s cancer center in Palo Alto for radical chemotherapy.
“He was told he could have two more treatments, but his cancer was not responding. In short - they held out little hope for a cure,” said an insider.
The NY Post has confirmed the news with his publicist, saying, “He’s suffering from pancreatic cancer, which could tragically bring down the curtain on his remarkably diverse career… The average life expectancy is six to nine months, with only 4 percent of patients living more than five years.”

UPDATE: Swayze’s doctor, Dr. Patrick George, tells People: “Patrick has a very limited amount of disease and he appears to be responding well to treatment thus far. All of the reports stating the time frame of his prognosis and his physical side effects are absolutely untrue. We are considerably more optimistic.”
Swayze’s rep adds: “Patrick is continuing his normal schedule during this time, which includes working on upcoming projects. The outpouring of support and concern he has already received from the public is deeply appreciated by Patrick and his family.”

This makes me really sad. My grandmother died a few years ago because of pancreatic cancer, and I know it is a very lethal cancer, probably the worst one. And I’ve enjoyed Patrick’s work so much, I cannot count how many times i’ve watched Ghost and how many times i’ve cried watching it.

Patrick Swayze and his wife, Lisa, are among the few really decent and respectable people in Hollywood. No one, except God, can understand why this happens to someone that is so young and so good. It just breaks my heart to read this about Patrick or anyone else.

While I’m incredibly sad for Swayze, I’m even more pi$$ed for him and his family. Clearly, someone at the hospital/treatment facility leaked this information, which is wrong and illegal.
Hospitals, especially CA and NY hospitals, need to screen their employees and put the smackdown so hard that these loose-lipped vermin cannot get up again!

Piper, I agree with you, but even a private room has visitors whose voices can be heard. I have a friend in hospital at the moment and there are signs in elevators saying to respect patients’ confidentiality in conversations. But still, you hear things in the hallway, and it might be someone other than the staff or his family that leaked it — someone visiting another patient and hearing something.
I am so sad. Rent North and South, or get it on Netflix. From the good old days of the mini-series, with high production value, it’s really something to watch. Very much a soap opera, done with quality, and at the end to watch the special features and listen to Patrick talk about it, is really cool.
He has always been a more talented actor than given credit for, and an honorable man. And I will never forget his dancing audition on SNL with Chris Farley, where he set Chris up for the laughs and played it just right for the maximum effect!
Swayze is one of a kind — a true gentleman onscreen and off, and I admire him and am praying for his family.

While it’s entirely possible that a staffer overheard a conversation about his condition, I seriously can picture some dip$hit pouring through his file without authorization. Someone leaking this information to the press is in NO WAY along the same lines as someone seeing a marriage certificate, visa application, etc. There is a little thing called HIPAA that prohibits hospital staff who are not caring for the patient from even seeing charts or knowing what diagnosis they have. There are very stiff penalties for those who violate these rules and I hope that whoever leaked this information to the slimy Enquirer gets found and is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Imagine being forced to reveal to the world your private battle with a potentially terminal disease because some lousy publication wanted to make a few bucks on a cover.

Errr… I’m well-aware of HIPAA. I worked at a hospital and lived through HIPAA h*ll in its infancy. To clarify, the tabloids like to put on airs that they know something when in fact they have little toadies pouring through documents which, quite frankly, isn’t any of their business.
Maybe the hospital has rules about confidentiality when it comes to employees fired due to violation of HIPAA, but these hospitals need to take a stronger stand in order to discourage this behavior. It didn’t help when that NY hospital didn’t correct Clooney when he said that staff looking at his records wasn’t that big of a deal. It was a big deal and everyone, including self-serving, ignorant celebrities, are entitled to absolute privacy when it comes to their medical records.

Patrick, You don’t know how much your movie ‘Ghost’ meant to me. I had just lost my husband/my soul mate and watching ‘Ghost’ is still with me today. And when I’m missing him, I put your movie in and curl up on the couch and imagine/believe. I wish to believe that he’s still with me, watching over me and our 3 kids, which were 10, 9 & 7 at the time. Today, they have kids of their own and I still tell my grandkids of their ‘papa’. This is the worst cancer there is. I have to know first hand about it , my two best friends have had it. One is the second longest pancreatic cancer , survior in the world, since 1998. My other is fighting it now, with some luck. Went to Cancer Center of America in Tulsa, OK.

I had testicular cancer and was given 6 months back in the 1980’s. I was 17 years old at the time. I was given traditional chemo and more importantly: experimental. I’m not what they call a fan of Patrick, only seen Dirty dancing and Ghost and Roadhouse, In the Netherlands Patrick is not really a celeb, although when Dancing queen, a show in holland, heard about his illness they tributed one of their shows completly to him.

You know in this day and age I just can’t believe we haven’t found a cure for this damn disease. I lost my mom a couple of years ago to cancer. I HATE CANCER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am praying for him, and yes this isn’t a reliable source. However, TMZ is.
My heart goes out to Patrick and his family. I have experienced Cancer in my family and twice myself. I know how it feels and I know how important Family and Friends are along with as many prayers they say in behalf of you, Patrick. I had Uterine cancer at the age of 23. Had a hysterectomy on my 24th birthday. Fortunately I had 2 beautiful children by then. Surgery was the answer to that problem. Then, in 2004 (at age 57) I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. After chemo therapy losing my hair and 7 weeks of radiation, I made a full recovery. I pray the same for you. Keep the faith and ALWAYS think positive; even when you’re not feeling positive. I will keep you in my prayers, Patrick, as my family and friends did. I truly believe you will be given the strength you need. Just have faith.

I was able to see Buddy “Patrick” when he was in high school. I would go to the Galleria and see him teach. He was such a good person. Even though we were not friends. We did share a lot of the same friends from Waltrip. I pray that he beats this. God Bless you Buddy.

Patrick - you continue to be positive. My mom was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer the same time, the same diagnosis, she died 5 weeks later. Now my sister has been diagnosed with it, the cancer hasn’t spread, she has a very good chance. She’s at UCLA right now taking care of it.

Antineoplaston therapy was discovered by Dr. Stanislaw R. Burzynski and is being used by him to treat cancer, HIV infection, and autoimmune diseases. For over 20 years, Dr. Burzynski has been attacking cancer in humans, in over 3,000 patients.
Antineoplaston therapy is unlike the chemotherapy agents currently in use that kill cancerous cells and healthy cells. Antineoplastons work on cancer cells to interrupt the activity of the ras oncogene, which causes cells to divide endlessly. At the same time, antineoplastons stimulate p53 tumor suppressor genes, which tell the cells to undergo programmed cell death. Healthy cells remain unaffected under these processes.
Dr. Burzynski first discovered and named antineoplastons in the late 1960s. These drugs are safe and nontoxic, unlike traditional chemotherapeutic agents. Antineoplastons are comprised of compounds that occur naturally in the human body: amino acid derivatives and peptides from proteins and essential amino acids present in the diet of all biologic organisms. Antineoplastons are found in the blood of healthy persons and not in that of patients with cancer. Dr. Burzynski currently is using antineoplastons to treat cancer, HIV infection, and autoimmune diseases in 74 Phase II clinical trials.
The chemotherapeutic agents in common use today cannot manage cancer for two reasons. First, they destroy healthy cells; therefore, these drugs cannot be taken over long periods of time, as can antineoplastons. Second, no one chemotherapeutic drug can kill all the cancer cells. Just as there are antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria, cancer cell types exist that are resistant to specific chemotherapeutic agents. When a chemotherapeutic agent leaves 10% of cancer cells remaining, there may be billions of cells that survive, say, 10 billion. A different chemotherapeutic agent may kill 90% of those cells, leaving behind one billion cells. Still another agent may destroy 90% of those cells, leaving 100 million cells. Of course, all the while, these cells are multiplying.
Because they reprogram cancer cells instead of killing them, antineoplastons do not stop working as do traditional chemotherapy agents. Therefore, antineoplastons are making cancer a manageable disease.

I knew Patsy and Patrick when my daughter took dance lessons from Patrick’s Mom, Patsey in Houston years ago. I’d watch him dance and leap thru the air like a beatuiful deer. I’ve followed hs career thru the years and hae watched Dirty Dancing, my favorite Patrick film at least 50 times, knowing nearly every line. OMG! I was just watching Dirty Dancing the other day and just found out about his cancer.
I had no idea, I dont pay much attention to these types of things b/c its their own personal business but this is awful.
