Beyonce is Etta James — FIRST LOOK
Beyonce and Adrien Brody are first seen on the set of Cadillac Records in New Jersey on Monday.
Beyonce stars as legendary Blue singer Etta James and Adrien plays legendary record produce Len Chess. Mos Def, Jeffrey Wright, Emmanuelle Chriqui and Cedric The Entertainer co-star in the movie.
The film which chronicles the rise and fall of influential R&B record label Chess Records will also shoot in Mississippi later in the month.
Etta James spoke to PageSix about Beyonce playing her, “Etta James ain’t been no angel!” she said at the time. “I don’t think she looks like me, but that’s all right. They can fix that up.” Let’s hope they can fix Beyonce up!

In Carmen - SHE DID EXCELLENT - jump started her acting career; Austin Powers - SHE DID GREAT - it was action and she held her own; Pink Panther - SHE DID HER JOB - she herself turned down the sequel because it was NO ACTING INVOLVED; Dreamgirls - SHE DID GOOD - J.Hud won the Oscar, but Beyonce’s the one people are still talking about, not to mention they use her silhoutte to promote the movie and she produced the soundtrack. Man, Beyonce’s no angel either. All I have ever heard about her is that she is an insane, obsessive, rageful prima donna.
She can’t act people - stop drinking the koolaid. Carmen - she was singing so that doesn’t count. Anytime she had to stand there and actually emote, she was painful. Austin Powers - she wasn’t funny and she had the same monotone voice throughout. Dreamgirls - again, she was NOT the star of that show, I don’t care how many nominations her daddy paid for. J Hud was the star and she shut this chick down. I haven’t even bothered to see the rest of her films….she’s just so awkward on camera that it’s cloying. Beyonce doesn’t even remotely sound anything like Etta so I hope they don’t let her sing.

Why is it that whenever someone doesn’t like Beyonce, they’re labeled a “hater”? Some people need to pry their lips off her ass long enough to realize that not everything she does is good.

First rule of thumb when you’re a singer trying to become an actor: Do not take a role that requires you to sing, if that film is a biopic. (If it’s a musical, well obviously…)
The point of acting is to transform yourself into someone you’re not. This won’t be Angela Bassett playing Tina Turner. This will be Mandy Moore in…most of her films.
If I felt that Beyonce had any respect for acting, or had any intention of *being* an actress, I could get behind this. But it seems to me she’s just doing this to win an Oscar; you have to admit, this is Oscar bait. So was Dreamgirls.
Her most successful attempt to date was Dreamgirls. There are three major papers considered the best in the biz: The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, New York Times.
“Meanwhile, Knowles shows more flair than her character is supposed to have.” That’s all THR had to say about her role in Dreamgirls. The rest of the review was basically about Hudson.
NYT: “Ms. Knowles’s performance has been static and detached. In her limited work in movies she has never seemed comfortable with acting, shying away from any emotional display that might compromise her steely, hieratic dignity.”
Variety: “As befits a character described at one point as “a product,” Deena is more manipulated than self-driven, but Knowles is poised, quietly determined and beautiful beyond belief, blossoming from innocent teenager to self-possessed star.”
That Variety review? Is the most positive of the bunch. Which is kind of sad. I agree with the NYT review, that she refuses anything that compromises the image she’s built for herself. Beyonce is too safe, generic, and untalented to be an actress. She ought to stick to singing. The rest is just ego.
I love her singing and dancing but she cannot act! I hate to eveb hear her speak in an interview-she sounds so stupid and uneducated!

Love Beyonce but after Dreamgirls, I can’t imagine her playing Etta and doign it with depth. IEtta’s life was awful - drugs, welfare, booze - I don;t see Beyonce playing this with any depth. I think they should have cast an unknown or Thandie Newton, Halle Berry - someone with more acting talent. My 2 cents.

Etta James was a chubby young woman, so when I think of putting someone in a role as her I automatically think Beyonce. No one in Hollywood can play chubby girls better than slender ones. And so what if she can’t sing like Etta either, most people who like Beyonce don’t know who Etta is anyway. Unless they’ve been to a wedding recently they probably never heard an Etta James song either. Actually they could have Jamie Foxx play Chuck Berry and 50 Cent can be Muddy Waters too, talk about awesome!
Beyonce conquers with a vengence anything she’s working on because she wants it to be perfect. That’s what real talented people do - they’re already good, but it has to the best. Beyonce as Etta will be the best!

I thought the exact same thing he did when I first heard she was doing this: “this girl is desperate to get an Oscar and will do anything to get it.” I don’t care how much training she gets and even if she gets it from Etta herself, the girl is STILL not an actress. She never does anything that requires her to show any depth and is completely wooden onscreen. A complete travesty this will be.

I am a skeptic, but I wanted to comment on those questiong Beyonce’s ability to play this role. Someone above me posted saying that Etta James is a legend and how Beyonce is a “dissapointment.” I’m sorry, but Beyonce is a legend. She is the defining woman of this era. There was a Whitney Houston, there was a Mariah Carey, there is a Beyonce. I love all three of those girls, but Beyonce is the one in the forefront today.
Sorry she is pretty but can’t act and her singing is not to hot either. Anytime you see someone who has to take off her clothes to sing and do provocative dances, hint, she is trying to cover something. It’s funny because I hear men say how attractive she is but, you rarely her them comment on her acting or singing. Any by the way she is being type casted in most of her roles like Carmen, Austin Powers, Pink Panther, and Dreamgirls she is always the “sex symbol”, nice to look at but that is about it. I have to give it to her though, she is a great performer on stage.
Beyonce isn’t exactly a legend–she’s a pop star. Let’s see what time holds for her and then we can decide if her fame lasts.
She’s a talented woman, no doubt, and luscious to look at, but really, she is just miscast in this role. I agree, Queen Latifa has the right look for the role, and has a closer vibe to Etta’s. Etta was a BAWDY, big-mouthed, tough woman at a time when it was not commonplace for a woman, much less a black woman, to be that way. Latifa broke into the male-dominated rap scene and succeeded. Of course, she’s moved beyond that now.
Neither woman is a trained actress and it shows when they appear on film. But Latifah’s big personality is more interesting than Beyonce’s and would translate on the screen better as Etta. Too bad it didn’t go in her favor.
I am Beyonce’s biggest fan, but it irks me that this part was not given to an unknown. Beyonce is already a star by every definition. You want to know why there are only two black starlets who really gets mainstream press in Hollywood, its because the same black stars are being cast for roles. Give this role to a starving black actress who can do it justice would have been the ideal road. Look at Nikki Blanki (spelling of the last name, sorry), she was an unknown when she took that Hairspray role, and now she has a career. Its okay to love Beyonce, but this was an error. I’m sorry, her acting skills were horrible with the exception of Dream Girls.

Well, it’s not any worse than them casting Diana Ross as Billie Holiday in “Lady Sings the Blues”. At least B is closer in size to Etta. It would be nice if she showed some real dedication and put on a few extra pounds to show that she’s serious about this role. Watched Fashion rocks last night and was completely confused with the blonde short hair Beyonce was rocking. Then realized she’s playing Etta.
I like Beyonce but i don’t think her acting is very good. the only reason why she got this role is because of her success as a singer - not an actress. she can hold strong notes (when she feels like it) and thats about it.
I think Christina Milian would’ve made a better choice when it comes to looks but she would have to come out of her teen-bop roles and really evolve to play the drug addict scenes.

And in case you missed it she sang like a BIRD on Fashion Rocks when she sang Etta James’ song, belting out notes like she was Etta James and her demeanor and characterization was on point. She is the GOLDEN GIRL, a triple threat, sanger-actress and dancer. Like J-Z said in his rap “he rockin the hottest chic on the scene” and she is. Jessica Simpson couldn’t touch her with a ten foot pole.

I remember hearing the same thing when Diana Ross was cast as Billie Holliday and felt the same until I saw the movie. One of the best performances and movie soundtracks ever scored and of course Ms. Ross is still famous after over 40 years in the business. Give Beyonce a chance. She may not fit your taste but she has plenty of others that admire her. As for Etta, she is one of a kind, and although no one can fill her shoes at least she is being remembered and thought of. I for one am happy that a woman of color is being bankrolled to star in a movie when we all know a few shorts years ago that was impossible.
Actually, I believe post # 12 hit it right on. I like Amy Winehouse’s voice and think she sounds amazingly like Etta James, same feel, ya know? Sober Amy up and put her in a blonde wig and let ‘er rip (can Amy act???)!!! I just hope the movie does Etta justice, no matter her lifestyle, what a voice she has. I hope they really showcase her amazing career and style. Wow.

Someone asked about Jennifer Hudson - I don’t think she could have pulled the illusion of Etta James off as well due to the fact that Etta was half white, she was very light skinned and Miss Hudson is dark skinned yet just as wonderful and lovely. I like some of Beyonce’s music, and admire her as an entertainer, but I think Jill Scott would have been better suited for the role of Etta James. Jill has the look as well as voice. Beyonce’s voice is too high to sound like Etta’s.

here’s how i feel.
For you to see a Beyonce’ movie you would have to do either one of the following:
1. Go out and pay tickets to watch the movie, which means you’re contempt for Beyonce’ is actually an obession with Beyonce’ as if you thought she couldn’t act- why would you pay to see her do it?
2. Download a Beyonce’ movie, yes it’s free, but that would mean you would have to spend your time searching for the movie and then waiting a couple hours for it to download- once again if you didn’t think she could act why would you spend your time watching her to do so?
3. Buy a DVD of a Beyonce’ movie- which means you went out to a store and bought the dvd (even though you already think she can’t act) watched it and then came on this site to say she couldn’t act.
So you see, if you don’t think Beyonce’ can act- why watch her films, and if you haven’t watched her films- how can you say she can’t act. Unless you are proffesional and paid critic you have no excuse for continuosly watching her movies just to criticise them.
She’ll keep getting cast because she can act. If you don’t like it- dont watch them, dont buy them, press the X button on the top of this screen and pay attention to “insert name of your favourite artist whose album, single and line of synthetic weaves flopped worldwide”.

Ok…I am a big Beyonce fan…OF HER MUSIC!!! I have all the Destiny’s Child CD’s (including the Christmas, the Remix, and the BEst of) and all of Beyonce’s as well. She is a great entertainer. However, her acting is not good. She has gotten better (the person who said she did great in Carmen should shoot themselves). Dreamgirls was her best yet and she still did not wow me. I just heard her version of “At Last” and all I can say is they should nave picked Halle Berry and did Etta voice overs on her songs cause Bey did not do it any justice. I am looking forward to I am Sasha Fierce cause I know this will top both Dangerously in Love and B’Day, but her acting is still suspect. Probably with a few more years of coaching she will be good, but right now….NO!!!

I have not seen the movie, but I believe that Ms Knowles was chosen because her skin colour was similiar to that of Ms James, altough Ms. James is very light skinned, in addition, I do not think anyone else can jowl or do some of the complicated vocals that Ms James does so Ms Knowles was the most appropriate choice. Yes, Beyonce is a talented, but “Go Beyonce,” her profile was used for Dreamgirls because SHE WAS ONE OF THE PRODUCERS of the movie and soundtrack — HELLO!!! People may still be talking about her in Dreamgirls, but probably in comparison to Jennifer Hudson’s truly amazing performance. Yes, she got 2 GG nominations, NOMINATIONS (no win), but Jennifer Hudson took the OSCAR. As to her playing, and I do mean PLAYING at being Ms. Etta, but did no one in casting think of JILL SCOTT for this role. Now SHE would have been fantastic!

Beyonce is an entertainer and performance artist with a farily decent voice. This is not a criticism but rather a description of her actual show business niche. Others of this ilk who’ve had long and distingquished careers are Liza Minelli and Bette Midler. They all sing and dance but they are not “singers” per se. Gladys Knight, Chaka Khan and Etta James are singers, the former group put on what are essential variety acts, song and dance shows, while the latter group stands and delivers songs, they’re “singers.” Get the difference?
As a performance artist it’s a natural progression for Beyonce to stretch into acting, like both Minelli and Midler did, quite successfully I might add. Sometimes singers do this too, like Barbara Streisand.
If Beyonce is faithful to study the craft she will become a better and better actress. There’s no reason to think she will not persist and succeed. In this latest film she does a very credible job. You forget that it’s Beyonce up there, unless you’re just hell bent and being her critic, and that’s all you can ask from a basic acting job. Does she bring anything special to the role? Yeah, I think so. Etta was a teenager out there in the business all by herself and even at a young age she was a tough broad. Beyonce pulled this off in the earlier studio scenes, bringing some big time attitude. I also think she did well in the restaurant scene with Brody and the near O.D. scene at the house,
also with Brody. This last scene, with a lot of nose to nose close ups, required the projection of some muted but powerful emtional power. She played well against Brody, who is most certainly a good actor.
I grew up in the black theater (my Mom was an actress) and in Beyonce Knowles I see a fine young actress developing. Beyonce was a suitable choice of type, given the importance of Etta being half white, and like Beyonce herself, Etta was prettier than most in her trade. Beyonce’s no classic beauty but she’s packaged very well and has pulled off the sex bomb act with commercial success. You can’t argue with results in the marketplace. I think the many critics of Beyonce’s acting will be pleasantly surprised by her lates effort. It’s an excellent film, in my opinion.
Hat’s off to Mos Def, who once again delivers a stellar acting job. Mos Def is a multi threat talent: Rapper, Singer, Rock guitarist/singer, Actor and Dancer. Also check out Jeffery Wright, a star who people are starting to recognize, saying “hey, wasn’t he the guy in…?” Yes, he was the guy in George Cluny’s weird spy flick, he was the guy in Lackawanna Blues and so on. Wright, in my opinion, is one of our better legitimate dramatic actors.
I’m anxious to read the comments of some of the folk here who were so critical of Beyonce after they’ve seen Cadillac Records. I think they’ll have to admit that she did at least a credible job in the role. I think it was a major step in her growth as an actress.

Little Walter, Muddy Waters, Chess, and Wolfe’ and the actress that played Muddy Waters wife (she can act). Everyone has a talent, Beyonce is a great performer and dancer she would do well in Vegas…I did not say singer or actress, I repeat a great performer and dancer….But guess what our opinions do not matter…..Beyonce is still going to the bank…
I have read all the comment and the reality is Beyonce Knowles is a great intertainer. In my opinion, its not about hating or being jealous. The fact is this, Beyonce cannot sing or act…She has not paid her dues as an actress first of all. Beyonce made it because she has two great managers (her parents). Beyonce has always been the center attention, even when she was with the group. She was always pushed to the fore front but she was not the talented one in the group. Beyonce sells her sexuality, I give it to her. She has done an excellent job. Beyonce is smart, she married a mega star…Beyonce has to pay her dues, like most talented people. It took years for several talented artists and actors/actresses to get recognized. The music Beyonce sings fits her talent. What ever Beyonce has it is working for her and she is making mega dollars…Mature people are not haters, we all have a right to our opinion whether you agree with it or not. I have a right to express my opinion. In the movie Beyonce’s performance like in all her movies are not impressive. She is not an actress , she is not for the big screen. What is all the color issues..who cares if someone is bi-racial. The bottom line if you have a drop of black blood, people will consider you black unless you can pass for white. Not all bi-racial people are light skin….The reason Beyonce got the part was probably because she is the hottest performer out there now. Etta James paid her dues, Natalie Cole Richard, Aretha Franklin, the list goes on and on. During the 40’s-70’s you technology is not what it is today. I must admit I really am not a fan of Beyonce as an actress. She dis a DAMN good job playing this roll I have to g ive her props I didn’t think she could pull it off. YOU GO GIRL!!!
Not trying to sound tacky, however Beyonce’ should stick with making wonderful music; everyone that can sing can not act and Beyonce’ past screen performances proves my point.
I am furious and sickened that anyone but Etta James would be performing “AT LAST” at the Obama Inaugural. A movie is one thing but I just can’t believe that this can happen. I thought Beyonce had more class. Surely something will be done to rectify this wrong!
Most of you are right. She can sing and dance her ass off but she can’t act to save her life. Her acting looks fake and staged. I can’t take it seriously. She looked goofy in dreamgirls when she tried to be serious.
The only reason they casted her to play Etta James is cause she is a big name, and they know that her fans will support it. That in turn will make them a lot of money. I’m not a hater I think she can sing but we all know hollywood did it for the money not cause she can act. Thats the only reason they cast singers and rappers in movies. Some can really act but some well need to stick to the music.

well, today i just saw the movie, i loved it, and she was great, i love her.
B. may not look like Etta but she played her great and killed her songs… All of u guys are haters…. …Only very noticable difference is B is clearly a soprano and Etta is Alto!!
So many hate her because she’s beautiful and talented. Etta should be grateful to be mentioned in the same vain as her, yet alone to be played by her.
No offense, but it galls me that most of you made these comments before the movie even came out. And as for Beyonce’s acting abilities, most of you probably confuse her southern texas accent with not “delivering the lines the way that you would expect a great actress to do” after years of training in acting classes and such. As for paying her dues, lest you forget the heart-wrenching tryouts in her youth where they lost and dedicated their lives to honing their talents with hard work and perserverance that got her where she is today. And last but not least, I loved past tense Etta James songs and I just looked at her bio and she had had a great life. But unfotunately we all get older and our society does everything to get rid of us save the Eskimo tradition where “Old people also, when they became too feeble to contribute to the family, were left out in the snow to die.” I myself would love to go to an Etta James Concert. Face it when we get older our talents are not marketed as they were when we were younger. However, if someone had thought of it Etta James could have song “At Last” maybe as a duet with Beyonce that would have been great publicity for the movie. Of course now people will be running to see the movie so that they can weigh in on whether or not Beyonce can indeed act. And another thing, maybe your gauge of good acting and my gauge of good acting are two differnt things. And oh yeah Heather Headley (whoever she is) looks and sounds more like Etta James?. But the point that the movie shows to me the struggle Etta James had to go through in order for Beyonce to be able to do what she does. Think about that for a minute. Don’t kill the messenger without first receiving the message. Did you even know what Etta James had to go through to even be Etta James. wow! I for one would rather see Beyonce experience the struggle through “acting” in the “movie” instead of real life. This is actually a compliment for award winning Etta James “IMITATION IS STILL THE GREATEST FORM OF FLATTERY” and I can imagine that when Beyonce was growing up she listened to Etta James. I am just glad that Etta James is able to still show case her own talent today even though I understand how she feels that in her lifetime she COULD HAVE performed for the President of the United States, but this is not Beyonce’s fault.
I saw the movie. Beyounce was great. her singing was the best to dated. I wish her nothing but the best in her movie career. Beyounce enactment of Etta James, showed the better side of Etta James. thank you Beyounce keep up the good works.

I watched the movie for the first time last night, and have to say it was actually a good movie, with the exception of Beyonce’s portrayal of Etta James. I really like Beyonce, but she is not a convincing actress. Her performance seemed so forced, she is so hesitant to show real raw emotion. Honestly, I can’t even put my disappointment in words. Don’t even get me started on her rendition of Etta James’ songs. Why did she feel the need to sing Etta in the form of Beyonce? It was not Beyonce trying to sing Etta’s songs as Etta, it was Beyonce covering Etta’s songs in the same fashion that she sings her own, OVER THE TOP.
I’m thinkin’ Etta’s Music is best left to Etta. Beyonce wouldn’t know the Blues if they bit her in her big ass!! Beyonce is good for T & A though.
