Beyonce is Etta James — FIRST LOOK
Beyonce and Adrien Brody are first seen on the set of Cadillac Records in New Jersey on Monday.
Beyonce stars as legendary Blue singer Etta James and Adrien plays legendary record produce Len Chess. Mos Def, Jeffrey Wright, Emmanuelle Chriqui and Cedric The Entertainer co-star in the movie.
The film which chronicles the rise and fall of influential R&B record label Chess Records will also shoot in Mississippi later in the month.
Etta James spoke to PageSix about Beyonce playing her, “Etta James ain’t been no angel!” she said at the time. “I don’t think she looks like me, but that’s all right. They can fix that up.” Let’s hope they can fix Beyonce up!

I love Beyonce, but Etta James is the real thing. Beyonce isn’t thick enough or cute enough to play Etta!
I’m sorry but when the one she is impersanting say not only does she not look like me but i hope they can fix her up.Thats a real statement I understand they wanto make money but at what cost…Just like Jean-Clude Van Dan playing Guile teah his body fit but he didn’t.
Yes Beyonce has a nice voice, but she can’t act. It’s painful to watch her act. Next it will be Solange doing Ella Fitzgerald, or Lena Horne for that matter. When will the madness end??
I can’t wait to see the film. Beyonce’s not exactly the Etta James type but maybe she can do the part justice. Etta was a tough cookie in her day. She was a swearing, partyin’, rockin’, hard lovin’ woman - all the things Miss Knowles seems to not be.
Someone asked about Jennifer Hudson - I don’t think she could have pulled the illusion of Etta James off as well due to the fact that Etta was half white, she was very light skinned and Miss Hudson is dark skinned yet just as wonderful and lovely. I’m a white woman by the way ;) Can’t wait to see the film!!!! I love Etta James. She inspired Janice Joplin’s style but I like Etta much better. Peace.
WOW! I agree with #95!!! Queen Latifah would have been an excellent choice!!! they could have lightened her skin with makeup very nicely. I wonder if they even approached her? They should have.
I LIKE BEYONCE. I ALSO LIKE ETTA, SHE HAS A RAW BUT HONEST CLOMPLEX. EVEN THO B CAN TAKE ON ANYTHING AND GIVE IT HER BEST WHICH USUALLY TURNS OUT GREAT, I THINK THEY COULD HAVE GOTTEN SOMEONE A BIT MORE LIKE ETTA. I just don’t see Beyonce as Etta James, this is nothing against B she’s great but Etta James she ain’t. I think that much better choices of singer/actresses would have been Jill Scott, Queen Latifah or even Monica. I think they would have been able to pull off the gritty soulful essence of EJ than Beyonce. Just my opinion.
Beyonce cant act, and she sounds like an uneducated boy when she talks. I wish she would stick to what she does best making catch forgettable music and gold digging to secure her financial future. Thanks for putting a ring on it JayZ know could you please put some clothes on it.

I like some of Beyonce’s music, and admire her as an entertainer, but I think Jill Scott would have been better suited for the role of Etta James. Jill has the look as well as voice. Beyonce’s voice is too high to sound like Etta’s.
Beyonce is not an actress, she’s a mediocre singer who tries desperately to act in movies and never pulls it off.
Her so-called beauty is false. She’s had a nose job and lip job. She’s no black beauty. I loathe black women who dilute their blackness to sell. She constantly wears wigs, God forbid she should show her coarse roots.
She sounds ghetto when she sings, she oversings, she gyrates on stage for money. She might make a decent stripper but she’s not a good singer and definitely not a good actress.

It makes me laugh when people say Beyonce’ cant act, whether you like it or not she is still being cast in box office hits and whether you like it or not she will still be up for prestigious nominations.
What i cant understand is that if you thought Beyonce’ couldnt act in one movie- why waste your time watching the ones that followed just to come to the same conclusion.
It’s like the peole on youtube who watch her interviews and then say “that sucked, she’s boring”- oh really? Did you think a live band of drag queens would jump down from the ceiling within the last two seconds?
In my opinion, Beyonce’ can act, regardless of whether she sings in all her movies or not, when Will Smith always plays Superheroes i dont hear anybody complaining.
here’s how i feel.
For you to see a Beyonce’ movie you would have to do either one of the following:
1. Go out and pay tickets to watch the movie, which means you’re contempt for Beyonce’ is actually an obession with Beyonce’ as if you thought she couldn’t act- why would you pay to see her do it?
2. Download a Beyonce’ movie, yes it’s free, but that would mean you would have to spend your time searching for the movie and then waiting a couple hours for it to download- once again if you didn’t think she could act why would you spend your time watching her to do so?
3. Buy a DVD of a Beyonce’ movie- which means you went out to a store and bought the dvd (even though you already think she can’t act) watched it and then came on this site to say she couldn’t act.
So you see, if you don’t think Beyonce’ can act- why watch her films, and if you haven’t watched her films- how can you say she can’t act. Unless you are proffesional and paid critic you have no excuse for continuosly watching her movies just to criticise them.
She’ll keep getting cast because she can act. If you don’t like it- dont watch them, dont buy them, press the X button on the top of this screen and pay attention to “insert name of your favourite artist whose album, single and line of synthetic weaves flopped worldwide”.
KEY ADVICE:
IF YOU DONT LIKE BEYONCE- JUST DONT TYPE HER NAME INTO GOOGLE OR BETTER STILL JUST DONT WATCH HER MOVIES IF YOU THINK SHE CANT ACT.

Ok…I am a big Beyonce fan…OF HER MUSIC!!! I have all the Destiny’s Child CD’s (including the Christmas, the Remix, and the BEst of) and all of Beyonce’s as well. She is a great entertainer. However, her acting is not good. She has gotten better (the person who said she did great in Carmen should shoot themselves). Dreamgirls was her best yet and she still did not wow me. I just heard her version of “At Last” and all I can say is they should nave picked Halle Berry and did Etta voice overs on her songs cause Bey did not do it any justice. I am looking forward to I am Sasha Fierce cause I know this will top both Dangerously in Love and B’Day, but her acting is still suspect. Probably with a few more years of coaching she will be good, but right now….NO!!!

I have not seen the movie, but I believe that Ms Knowles was chosen because her skin colour was similiar to that of Ms James, altough Ms. James is very light skinned, in addition, I do not think anyone else can jowl or do some of the complicated vocals that Ms James does so Ms Knowles was the most appropriate choice. I believe that Ms Knowles can pull of Ms James former habits as she is a versatile actress
Beyonce is amazing. Her voice in this film is terrific. I thought she did good in Dreamgirls, she going to do a great job in this film. Its like you can feel the need for her addiction. The movie does’nt come out until Dec. 5. but I cant wait. She managed her role mentally, physically, and emotionally. AND SHE LOOKS BEAUTIFUL IN BLONDE HAIR. For all the people who think she cant succeed in this role, go watch youtube and see her. SHE’S WONDERFUL. BELIEVE ME!
You people got it twisted, just because she can perform does not make her a great singer. She is a great performer, she can put on a good show and that’s what get’s her over …….. SHE CAN NOT SING.
Her acting is worse than her singing, just because she did a couple of movies does’nt make her an actress. She still got a long way to go.
As far as playing Etta James, SHE CAN’T TOUCH HER, I HATE THE WAY SHE BUTCHERED THAT SONG.

Beyonce as Etta james….LOL!! Beyonce is not a talanted actress and she is an ok performer. I remember the jealousy she displayed towards Jennnifer Hudson for being the “star” of Dreamgirls and winning the Oscar. Beyonce is ghettofab!
