korton to join Clinton Global Initiative meeting in New Orleans, focused on addressing world problems
By Daniel Aloi

Cornell President David Skorton will take part in the inaugural meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U), hosted by former U.S. President Bill Clinton, March 14-16 at Tulane University in New Orleans, where college students, fellow university officials and global leaders will address how to change the world.

Clinton founded CGI in 2005 to turn ideas into action by bringing attention to the world’s most pressing issues and fostering a shared responsibility to address them.

“CGI does not give grants; it matches people with ideas and those who have the means to see them through,” Clinton has said. “Today’s generation of young people holds more power than any generation before them to make a positive impact on the world.”

CGI U is a project to tackle global problems with innovative solutions. The CGI U meeting requires commitments from all participants to provide real action with results.

Skorton will take part in the opening March 15 plenary session, “Working Together: Students and Universities Take the Lead on Global Challenges” — a forward-looking discussion on how students, graduates and educational institutions can together transform global challenges into opportunities to create jobs, save lives and create a world of shared benefits, according to the CGI U program.

Working sessions will follow on CGI U’s four main focus areas — energy and climate change, global health, human rights and peace, and alleviation of poverty.

Also scheduled are a special session on “Rebuilding a Sustainable New Orleans,” a closing plenary with remarks by Clinton, and a “Giving Back to New Orleans” service project on March 16.

Other participants in the weekend meeting will include actor Brad Pitt, writer Dave Eggers, political strategist James Carville and fashion model (and presidential niece) Lauren Bush.

CGI is a nonpartisan initiative of the William J. Clinton Foundation. For more information, visit http://www.clintonglobalinitiative.org.

On March 19, Skorton will take part in a media roundtable at the Penn Club of New York, where he and several other university presidents will discuss science, research and higher education.

Just A Minute With: “Idol” judge Randy Jackson

Q: Idol Gives Back II is slated for April with a star-studded guest list. Is this going to become an annual event?

A: “I think we should make it annual. It was always our intention as a show to do something to help people, and on an ongoing basis, not just as a response to a disaster or catastrophe. People are always in need of help.”

Q: Was it hard to get the big names to join?

A: “No. I saw Brad Pitt in New Orleans and he was keen. I think all of us as celebrities have a duty to do this, to use the platform we have to help others.”

damn! i missed cook and felinelilly’s sexcapades!

(Early Review of Kung Fu Panda from ShoWest)
Black’s Kung Fu Fighting With `Panda’
By DAVID GERMAIN 03.12.08, 6:08 PM ET

LAS VEGAS - The last thing the martial-arts fans behind “Kung Fu Panda” wanted to do was make fun of the genre they were re-imagining for the animated world.

So while their leading guy is a tubby, klutzy panda with Jack Black’s voice, the filmmakers have delivered a real kung fu movie in the guise of a cartoon comedy.

Directors Mark Osborne and John Stevenson said they intended their panda hero and his comrades - including a tiger (Angelina Jolie), a viper (Lucy Liu) and a monkey (Jackie Chan) - to be the animal-world equivalent of the Asian action warriors they admire.

“With the title, it would be easy to expect maybe a parody of kung fu films,” Stevenson said after a screening of “Kung Fu Panda” Tuesday night at ShoWest, an annual convention of theater owners.

“Everybody on the crew was a big martial-arts movie fan,” Stevenson said. “That was one of the reasons we didn’t want to do a parody, because we actually love those movies. They’re great movies. They’re sort of like Westerns, these great archetypal tales of good and evil and great emotion and heroism. So we wanted to honor that, not spoof it.”

Due in theaters June 6, “Kung Fu Panda” is the latest computer-generated production from DreamWorks Animation (nyse: DWA - news - people ), whose films include the “Shrek” flicks, “Madagascar” and “Over the Hedge.”

Black provides the voice of Po, a panda in ancient China who idolizes the land’s kung fu heroes but is stuck toiling in his family’s noodle shop.

Fate lands the roly-poly panda an unexpected gig: He is declared the Dragon Warrior, destined to battle the evil snow leopard Tai Lung (Ian McShane), who has escaped from a prison fortress seeking vengeance against his former martial-arts master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman).

Placed under the tutelage of the dubious Shifu, Po trains alongside five true kung fu masters: Jolie’s Tigress, Chan’s Monkey, Liu’s Viper, Seth Rogen’s Mantis and David Cross’ Crane.

While the movie is loaded with slapstick and wisecracks, the spirit is true to martial-arts epics that inspired the filmmakers, among them “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” “Hero” and “House of Flying Daggers.”

The fight scenes are exaggerated for the animated world, but they are real action sequences, intense and often fierce. Even voice star Chan, one of Hollywood’s top martial-arts figures, was impressed.

“We thought early on about asking him to help consult and help us with our action, but he really deals with the physical world. He deals with bodies and props, so the virtual world was really foreign to him,” Osborne said.

“We kind of showed him some of our action when we recorded him, and he was really stunned by it. He was like, `Wow, this is cool. You’re doing stuff that we can’t ever do.’ I think it was really fun for him to see something that was so different but really a tribute at the same time to real kung fu. … He may have been saying that for our benefit, but he was very, very kind.”

Variety

The future is 3D, declared DreamWorks animation czar Jeffrey Katzenberg on Tuesday before showing the first piece of 3D footage created by DreamWorks–a redo of an entire scene from the upcoming 2D movie Kung Fu Panda in RealD. (Everyone seems to like these cool RealD glasses better than the clunkier Dolby ones.)

Later in the day, Katzenberg showed Kung Fu Panda in all its CG 2D glory. The crowd ate it up. Katzenberg has this family formula down–it’ll play for kids, young males, families, the works.

Andrómeda @ 03/13/2008 at 8:33 am

hi anoble!!, how are you?, hope you have a wonderful day!!

Sooo funny to read your comments! I agree with some completely and others…. Well, I don’t know whether to laugh or cry, really.

The minute Angie’s out with only one or two of the kids, people for some reason think it means she doesn’t love the others. I don’t get it. Why does it mean that?
Usually it’s Shiloh, although the reason to why Shiloh’s not coming along all the time is because she’s so young. She’s not even two years old!
This time it’s Pax as well. Just because he wasn’t playing with Mad and Zee on a scooter that day, it doesn’t (REALLY DOESN’T) mean Angie doesn’t love him! That’s ridiculous! Maybe he didn’t WANT to play with scooters that day. Or maybe Angie decided to spend some quality time with two of them at a time that day. It’s wonderful to do things as a family, but sometimes children want to spend some alone time with their mum or dad, so maybe that’s why Angie’s only out with two of them.

It does NOT mean she loves any of the kids more or less than any of the others. It just shows what a wonderful mother she is, making sure they all get equally much love and attention. I think it’s great that both she and Brad spend some alone time with only one or two of the kids every now and then.

Last, but not least: Thanks Jared! I always love reading about the Joli-Pitts and seeing pics of them, at least when the pics are like this and it doesn’t seem like the family was disturbed by the paps!

Why the need to copy and repost the garbage?

Why? always mad or z or both. Where are pax and Shi?

I haven’t seen her with pax one and one and with Shi just once.
But mad (especially mad) and Z always with her.
I think they are her favorites.

Maybe Shiloh is youngest one but pax? He is four.
He can go to everywhere where mad can go.
