St. John gets back on fashion’s classic track

Marie Gray, co-founder of St. John, was in Seattle Wednesday.
Over the past three years, any mention of luxury brand St. John usually invoked some sort of discussion about celebrity spokeswoman Angelina Jolie.

When we had the opportunity to sit down with St. John co-founder Marie Gray on Wednesday, we had no intention of being the exception.

Gray was in Seattle for the annual Nordstrom and Seattle Repertory Organization Fashion Ovation, which took place Wednesday at The Paramount Theatre and included a fashion show featuring St. John’s spring collection, a mix of classic knit suits, bright colors and flirty cocktail dresses.

Gray graciously fielded our questions, as did St. John CEO Glenn McMahon.

Q: Actress Angelina Jolie has a particular fashion appeal. Do you feel your core customer responded to her ad campaign?

Glenn McMahon: In the beginning, they thought it was a little disingenuous, to be honest. But I think Angelina grew a lot during the three years we worked with her, so people began to see the association made more sense.

This spring was the last season. We’ll return to using models. We really want to invest in building the brand and not pushing the celebrity.

Q: St. John always has been known for classic knitwear, suits that fit well and travel well. Then you brought in this younger perspective with the Angelina Jolie campaign. Where do you see your customer now?

Marie Gray: It’s interesting you say Angelina. I had a young point of view pushing me from a long time ago, and that was (daughter) Kelly. She was, of course, of a different generation. We always had that youthful element, but perhaps didn’t get a lot of credit for it.

Q: People seemed to think the collection changed the past few years, moving away from classic pieces to edgier design. What’s your perspective?

MG: Perhaps it had lost its way for a couple of seasons. I believe that today it’s very much on track.

Q: What happened with the line?

GM: We listened to the market, and people said: “You have to be younger, you have to be more modern.” Instead of listening to our customer, we listened to some of the retailers. The big miss was really in the fit. In 2006, we made the armholes higher, and they were smaller. The customer put on the jacket, and she didn’t have the flexibility or mobility. We heard from the customer loud and clear that she wanted ease and comfort.

MG: We toyed with the fit; the colors got a little muddy. I’m particularly fond of clear colors that really help the skin tones.

Q: But has the St. John customer changed and started to skew a little younger?

GM: For us, it doesn’t really matter how old the customer is, if she’s 30 or she’s 60. It’s just the need to address her lifestyle from the boardroom to the White House to the soccer field. We often get pigeonholed for doing just a great knit suit too, but the collection is really much broader than that.

Q: Women in politics are pretty fond of St. John. What do you think of Sen. Hillary Clinton’s campaign style so far?

MG: She has a great style that’s good for her. On the campaign trail, it’s a very difficult thing to stay fresh and fashionable. I think she pulls it off very well.

GM: But we’re fortunate, we don’t take sides. Cindy McCain (wife of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain) is a big fan. I don’t know if Michelle Obama has worn anything.
