Stars dig in to help victims of Hurricane Katrina

NEW ORLEANS Former President Bill Clinton and Brad Pitt grabbed a rake each to start ground-clearing work on a project to build affordable homes for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Mr Clinton and the 44-year-old actor met hundreds of volunteers in New Orleans’ devastated Lower 9th Ward where the Make It Right Foundation, which Pitt heads, intends to build the homes. “We hope to see a huge change here in the next six months,” Pitt said. The volunteers are helping to clear grass and weeds that have grown over drains and pavements after the city was hit by floods when its levee system failed during the hurricane in August 2005. (AP)

Energizer to donate $100,000 on The Ellen Degeneres Show

Energizer Holdings Inc. will present talk show host Ellen Degeneres with a $100,000 check that will be donated to Brad Pitt’s Make it Right program, which is helping rebuild areas of New Orleans affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Miles Faust, general manager, Global Lighting SBU, and Craig Meyer, Director of New Business Development and Global Lights Marketing, will present Degeneres with the check during her talk show on Thursday.

The donation is on behalf of Energizer’s latest product line, Light on Demand, which features everyday, energy-efficient home lighting products that can stay on when the power goes out. Energizer is also giving away Light on Demand desk lamps to the entire audience.

The Ellen Degeneres Show airs at 1 p.m. weekdays on KSDK Channel 5.

St. Louis-based Energizer Holdings Inc. (NYSE: ENR) manufactures batteries, flashlights and shaving products. Energizer acquired Playtex Products Inc., whose brands include Banana Boat, Hawaiian Tropic and Wet Ones, in a $1.9 billion deal that closed on Oct. 1.

It seemed like a simple transaction when Tamara Lackey brought her adopted son from Ethiopia to Chapel Hill four years ago: The child had been living in a spartan orphanage, and Lackey was willing to provide a loving home. She filled out paperwork, and five months later her bright-eyed, smiling baby was home.

Hundreds of other families in North Carolina and around the country are discovering that it’s no longer so easy to take in the world’s neediest children.

Just as international adoption has become a mainstream way to build a family — helped by celebrity adoptions such as those of Angelina Jolie, who has children from Cambodia and Ethiopia — the practice is in crisis.

Good Morning all. Thanks for all the lovely pictures of the children. I guess my cuteness overload will not be going away soon. Zahara expressions are priceless and she makes me smile whenever I see pictures of her. She is very protective of her family. Shiloh is a cutie also and pictures of her has brought out the ugly, jealous and nasty side of a few hen(s) or one lone pathetic hen changing names as fast as she can type.

What can you do with some folks? They are destined to rant and rave over matters and people that do not concern them for eternity. Who knew a Hollywood divorce could cause such angst in a few.? It is as if this is all they have going on in life, defending the “whiny one”. Have a great day and make it a MIR day. Peace to all.
