‘Tree of Life’ uprooted, briefly

Michael Corocoran, our crack reporter in Smithville, who calls with breathless reports about the latest Brangelina sightings and stuff like that, shoots us this latest bit from the set of Terrence Malick’s hush-hush “Tree of Life”:

“Tree of Life” has left Smithville for a week to film in the Texas Gulf Coast town of Matagorda.”

Beach shots. Fishing. Rocks. Sand. … What is Mysterious Maestro Malick up to?

Read one comment from a person who was an extra who said that the movie is about a really strict father with 3 sons. There are several students in Matagorda who were used as extras. One site had a pic of a little girl who was chosen as an extra. Filming was wrapped on the 26th. They are back in the Austin area. The small town of Matagorda was very happy to have the excitement for a while and the boost to the economy (lol).

Stars shine on beach in Matagorda

Some of the brightest stars of modern-day Hollywood are shining in Matagorda County, and have been since filming of the major motion picture, “Tree of Life,” began on Monday, March 24.

Those looking for a star-sighting, however, are not welcome and will be blocked from gaining access to the film set.

Though closed to the general public, Matagorda County Judge Nate McDonald visited the set of the movie on Matagorda beach Monday during filming.

“They put us in a staging area about 100 feet from where the extras were receiving directions from the director,” said McDonald.

According to McDonald, at least 100 extras — many of them Matagorda County citizens — appeared in scenes shot on Monday.

A 93-year-old Palacios woman was among the ones McDonald visited.

While McDonald and other local officials are not at liberty to disclose who the main actors are in “Tree of Life,” many Web sites — including Wikipedia — report that Brad Pitt and Sean Penn are the two main stars of the movie.

McDonald said that the local extras acted in the same scenes with the two celebrities.

“The movie stars were actually right in among our people,” McDonald said.

“There was certainly some chit chat going on between our guys and the actors.”

When the actors arrived on set and began to do scenes, McDonald said he was able to move within 25 feet of the filming and watched the performances for about three hours.

According to McDonald, the portion of the movie being filmed in Matagorda will be seen at the end of the movie in a dream sequence.

The scenes cover a timeline that dates back as far as King Lear and even features a local man playing that part.

McDonald said that the extras were dressed in period clothing that appeared to be from the 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s.

When the movie is released for audiences, Matagorda County will definitely see some familiar sights, said McDonald.

“We’ll see our beach and we’ll see some local faces that we recognize,” McDonald said.

“I’m told some of the extras have speaking parts.”

McDonald also said that Tree of Life includes a few different Academy award nominated contributors including the director, cinematographer and costume designer.

McDonald said that he was able to visit with one of the actors over dinner at an area restaurant and was even glad to offer a little Texas hospitality by providing directions and leading one of them to their temporary residence.

Filming is expected to last through Wednesday, March 26.

Movie in Matagorda

“They are shooting a movie in Matagorda on the beach for the next three days. The beach is closed. A friend called me last night because his daughter had been called to be an extra and he couldn’t believe they were shooting a movie in Matagorda. His daughter told him that Brad Pitt is there. I went down there yesterday but the police have the whole area sealed off. Gosh I hope I get to see Angelena.

I live in Matagorda county in Tx. and Brad in filming a movie here on the beach. Many of my children’s classmates have been called in to be extras in this movie. One of their classmates is said to be playing the part of his son. My daughter went to the beach this weekend and said her and her friends got turned away by security about 3 miles down the beach. also said to be in this movie is Sean Penn. A. Jolie and kids are said to be filming a movie in Bastrop County also not far from here. People have spotted them around but i have yet to see pics.

My last post - I do not live in Matagorda but the post I copied lived there - got it from a site call “Purse Forum”
